Ripple-based controls can strongly reduce the required output capacitance in PowerSoC converter thanks to a very fast dynamic response. Unfortunately, these controls are prone to sub-harmonic oscillations and several parameters affect the stability of these systems. This paper derives and validates a simulation-based modeling and stability analysis of a closed-loop V 2Ic control applied to a 5 MHz Buck converter using discrete modeling and Floquet theory to predict stability. This allows the derivation of sensitivity analysis to design robust systems. The work is extended to different V 2 architectures using the same methodology.

Two design procedures for Radial Line Slot Antennas (RLSAs) with circular polarization and either maximum gain or an arbitrary shaped pattern are proposed. Firstly, a method to design a RLSA with any desired pattern is presented. It is based on an optimization algorithm and some measures to ensure its fast convergence and stability need to be taken. Secondly, a fast technique to calculate the length and the position of every slot in a high gain RLSA with uniform field distribution is described. Both procedures are vali dated with the design of three antennas with different characteristics.

The design of a Final Assembly Line (FAL) is carry out in the product industrialization activity. The phase dealing with the definition of conceptual solutions is characterized by depending heavily on the personnel experience and being time-consuming. To enhance such process, it is proposed a development of a knowledge based software application to assist designers in the definition of scenarios and to generate conceptual FAL alternatives. Both the scenario and the generated FAL solution are part of the industrialization digital mock-up (IDMU). A commercial software application used in the aircraft programmes and supporting the IDMU concepts of: Product, Process and Resource; was selected to implement a software prototype. This communication presents the adopted methodological approach and the architecture of the developed application.

The SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research) program is an ambitious re-search and development initiative to design the future European air traffic man-agement (ATM) system. The study of the behavior of ATM systems using agent-based modeling and simulation tools can help the development of new methods to improve their performance. This paper presents an overview of existing agent-based approaches in air transportation (paying special attention to the challenges that exist for the design of future ATM systems) and, subsequently, describes a new agent-based approach that we proposed in the CASSIOPEIA project, which was developed according to the goals of the SESAR program. In our approach, we use agent models for different ATM stakeholders, and, in contrast to previous work, our solution models new collaborative decision processes for flow traffic management, it uses an intermediate level of abstraction (useful for simulations at larger scales), and was designed to be a practical tool (open and reusable) for the development of different ATM studies. It was successfully applied in three stud-ies related to the design of future ATM systems in Europe.

ABSTRACT The trend in the telecommunications sector during the last years follow a high increase in the transmission rate of voice, video and mainly in data. To achieve the required levels of data rates, the new modulation standards demand higher bandwidths and have a higher peak to average power ratio (PAPR). These specifications have a direct impact in the low efficiency of the RFPA. An additional factor for the low efficiency of the RFPA is in the power amplifier design. Traditionally, linear classes have been used for the implementation of the power amplifier as they comply with the technical requirements. However, they have a low efficiency, especially in the operating range of signals with a high PAPR. The low efficiency of the transmitter has additional disadvantages as an increase in the cost and size as the cooling system needs to be increased for a base station and a temperature increase and a lower use time for portable devices. Several solutions have been proposed in the state of the art to improve the efficiency of the transmitter as Outphasing, power combiners or Doherty technique. However, the highest potential of efficiency improvement can be obtained using a modulated power supply for the power amplifier, as in the Envelope Tracking and EER techniques. The Envelope Tracking technique is based on the modulation of the power supply of a linear power amplifier to improve the overall efficiency compared to a fixed voltage supply. In the implementation of this technique an additional stage is needed, the envelope amplifier, that will increase the complexity of the RFPA. However, the efficiency of the linear power amplifier will increase and, if designed properly, the RFPA efficiency will be improved. The advantages of this technique are that the envelope amplifier design does not require such a high bandwidth as the envelope signal and that in the integration process a perfect synchronization between envelope and phase is not required. The Envelope Elimination and Restoration (EER) technique, known also as Kahn’s technique, is based on the simultaneous modulation of envelope and phase using a high efficiency switched power amplifier. This solution has the highest potential in terms of the efficiency improvement but also has the most challenging specifications. This solution, proposed in 1952, has not been successfully implemented until the last two decades due to the high demanding requirements for each of the stages as well as for the highly demanding processing and computation capabilities needed. At the system level, a very precise synchronization is required between the envelope and phase paths to avoid a linearity decrease of the system. Several techniques are used to compensate the non-linear effects in amplitude and phase and to improve the rejection of the out of band noise as predistortion, feedback and feed-forward. In order to obtain a high bandwidth and efficient RFPA using either ET or EER, the envelope amplifier stage will have a critical importance. The requirements for this stage are very demanding in terms of bandwidth, linearity and quality of the transmitted signal. Additionally the efficiency should be as high as possible, as the envelope amplifier has a direct impact in the efficiency of the overall system. This thesis is focused on the envelope amplifier stage and the main objective will be the development of high efficiency envelope amplifier solutions that comply with the requirements of the RFPA application. The design and optimization of an envelope amplifier for a RFPA application is a highly referenced research topic, and many solutions that address the envelope amplifier and the RFPA design and optimization can be found in the state of the art. From a high level classification, multiple and single stage envelope amplifiers can be identified. Envelope amplifiers for EER based on multiple stage architecture combine a linear assisted stage and a switched-mode stage, either in a series or parallel configuration, to achieve a very high performance RFPA. However, the complexity of the system increases and the efficiency improvement is limited. A single-stage envelope amplifier has the advantage of a lower complexity but in order to achieve the required bandwidth the switching frequency has to be highly increased, and therefore the performance and the efficiency are degraded. Several techniques are used to overcome this limitation, as the design of integrated circuits that are capable of switching at very high rates or the use of topological solutions, high order filters or a combination of both to reduce the switching frequency requirements. In this thesis it is originally proposed the use of the ripple cancellation technique, applied to a synchronous buck converter, to reduce the switching frequency requirements compared to a conventional buck converter for an envelope amplifier application. Three original proposals for the envelope amplifier stage, based on the ripple cancellation technique, are presented and one of the solutions has been experimentally validated and integrated in the complete amplifier, showing a high total efficiency increase compared to other solutions of the state of the art. Additionally, the proposed envelope amplifier has been integrated in the complete RFPA achieving a high total efficiency. The design process optimization has also been analyzed in this thesis. Due to the different figures of merit between the envelope amplifier and the complete RFPA it is very difficult to obtain an optimized design for the envelope amplifier. To reduce the design uncertainties, a design tool has been developed to provide an estimation of the RFPA figures of merit based on the design of the envelope amplifier. The main contributions of this thesis are: The application of the ripple cancellation technique to a synchronous buck converter for an envelope amplifier application to achieve a high efficiency and high bandwidth EER RFPA. A 66% reduction of the switching frequency, validated experimentally, compared to the equivalent conventional buck converter. This reduction has been reflected in an improvement in the efficiency between 12.4% and 16%, validated for the specifications of this work. The synchronous buck converter with two cascaded ripple cancellation networks (RCNs) topology and design to improve the robustness and the performance of the envelope amplifier. The combination of a phase-shifted multi-phase buck converter with the ripple cancellation technique to improve the envelope amplifier switching frequency to signal bandwidth ratio. The optimization of the control loop of an envelope amplifier to improve the performance of the open loop design for the conventional and ripple cancellation buck converter. A simulation tool to optimize the envelope amplifier design process. Using the envelope amplifier design as the input data, the main figures of merit of the complete RFPA for an EER application are obtained for several digital modulations. The successful integration of the envelope amplifier based on a RCN buck converter in the complete RFPA obtaining a high efficiency integrated amplifier. The efficiency obtained is between 57% and 70.6% for an output power of 14.4W and 40.7W respectively. The main figures of merit for the different modulations have been characterized and analyzed. This thesis is organized in six chapters. In Chapter 1 is provided an introduction of the RFPA application, where the main problems, challenges and solutions are described. In Chapter 2 the technical background for radiofrequency power amplifiers (RF) is presented. The main techniques to implement an RFPA are described and analyzed. The state of the art techniques to improve performance of the RFPA are identified as well as the main sources of no-linearities for the RFPA. Chapter 3 is focused on the envelope amplifier stage. The three different solutions proposed originally in this thesis for the envelope amplifier are presented and analyzed. The control stage design is analyzed and an optimization is proposed both for the conventional and the RCN buck converter. Chapter 4 is focused in the design and optimization process of the envelope amplifier and a design tool to evaluate the envelope amplifier design impact in the RFPA is presented. Chapter 5 shows the integration process of the complete amplifier. Chapter 6 addresses the main conclusions of the thesis and the future work.

The use of Project Based Learning has spread widely over the last decades, not only throughout countries but also among disciplines. One of the most significant characteristics of this methodology is the use of ill-structured problems as central activity during the course, which represents an important difficulty for both teachers and students. This work presents a model, supported by a tool, focused on helping teachers and students in Project Based Learning, overcoming these difficulties. Firstly, teachers are guided in designing the project following the main principles of this methodology. Once the project has been specified at the desired level of depth, the same tool helps students to finish the project specification and organize the implementation. Collaborative work among different users is allowed in both phases. This tool has been satisfactorily tested designing two real projects used in Computer Engineering and Software Engineering degrees.

The design of containment walls suffering seismic loads traditionally has been realized with methods based on pseudoanalitic procedures such as Mononobe-Okabe's method, which it has led in certain occasions to insecure designs, that they have produced the ruin of many containment walls suffering the action of an earthquake. The recommendations gathered in Mononobe-Okabe's theory have been included in numerous Codes of Seismic Design. It is clear that a revision of these recommendations must be done. At present there is taking place an important review of the design methods of anti-seismic structures such as containment walls placed in an area of numerous earthquakes, by means of the introduction at the beginning of the decade of 1990 the Displacement Response Spectrum (DRS) and the Capacity Demand Diagram (CDD) that suppose an important change in the way of presenting the Elastic Response Spectrum (ERS). On the other hand in case of action of an earthquake, the dynamic characteristics of a soil have been referred traditionally to the speed of the shear waves that can be generated in a site, together with the characteristics of plasticity and damping of the soil. The Principle of the energy conservation explains why a shear upward propagating seismic wave can be amplified when travelling from a medium with high shear wave velocity (rock) to other medium with lower velocity (soil deposit), as it happened in the earthquake of Mexico of 1985. This amplification is a function of the speed gradient or of the contrast of impedances in the border of both types of mediums. A method is proposed in this paper for the design of containment walls in different soils, suffering to the action of an earthquake, based on the Performance-Based Seismic Design.

After being designed, a product has to be manufactured, which means converting concepts and information into a real, physical object. This requires a big amount of resources and a careful planning. The product manufacturing must be designed too, and that is called Industrialization Design. An accepted methodology for this activity is starting defining simple structures and then progressively increasing the detail degree of the manufacturing solution. The impact of decisions taken at first stages of Industrialization Design is remarkable, and software tools to assist designers are required. In this paper a Knowledge Based Application prototype for the Industrialization Design is presented. The application is implemented within the environment CATIA V5/DELMIA. A case study with a simple Product from aerospace sector illustrates the prototype development.

Abstract Concentrating solar power is the common name of a technology based on capturing the thermal power of solar radiation, in a suitable way to reach temperatures able to activate a conventional (or advanced) thermodynamic cycle to generate electricity; this quest mainly depends on our ability to concentrate solar radiation in a cheap and efficient way. The present thesis is focused to highlight and help solving some of the important issues related to this problem. The need of reducing costs in concentrating the direct solar radiation, but without jeopardizing the thermodynamic objective of heating a fluid up to the required temperature, is of prime importance. Linear Fresnel collectors have been identified in the scientific literature as a technology with high potential to reach this cost reduction. This technology has been selected because of a number of reasons, particularly the degrees of freedom of this type of concentrating configuration and its current immature state. In order to respond to this challenge, a very detailed exercise has been carried out on the optical properties of linear Fresnel collectors. This has been done combining analytic and numerical methods. First, the effect of the design variables on the ratio of energy impinging onto the reflecting surface has been studied using analytically developed equations, together with models that predict the location and direct normal irradiance of the sun at any moment. Similarly, errors due to off-axis aberration, to the aperture of the reflected energy beam and to shading and blocking effects have been obtained analytically. This has allowed the comparison of different shapes of mirrors –flat, cylindrical or parabolic–, as well as a preliminary optimization of the location and width of mirrors and receiver with no need of time-consuming numerical models. Second, in order to prove the validity of the analytic results, but also due to the fact that the study of the reflection process is not precise enough when using analytic equations, a Monte Carlo Ray Trace model has been developed. The developed code is designed specifically for linear Fresnel collectors, which has reduced the computing time by several orders of magnitude compared to a wider commercial software. This justifies the development of the new code. The model has been first used to compare radiation flux intensities and efficiencies of linear Fresnel collectors, both multitube receiver and secondary reflector receiver technologies, with parabolic trough collectors. Finally, the results obtained in the analytic study together with the numeric model have used in order to optimize the solar field for different orientations –North-South and East-West–, different locations –Almería and Aswan–, different tilts of the field towards the Tropic –from 0 deg to 32 deg– and different flux intensity minimum requirements –10 kW/m2 and 25 kW/m2. This thesis work has led to several important findings that should be considered in the design of Fresnel solar fields. First, flat mirrors should not be used in any case, as cylindrical and parabolic mirrors lead to higher flux intensities and efficiencies. Second, it has been concluded that, in locations relatively far from the Tropics such as Almería, East-West embodiments are more efficient, while in Aswan North- South orientation leads to a higher annual efficiency. It must be noted that East-West oriented solar fields require approximately half the number of mirrors than NS oriented fields, can be tilted towards the Equator in order to increase the efficiency and attain similar values of flux intensity at the receiver every day at midday. On the other hand, in NS embodiments the flux intensity is more even during each single day. Finally, it has been proved that the use of analytic designs with variable shift between mirrors and variable width of mirrors across the field can lead to improvements in the electricity generated per reflecting surface square meter up to 6%. The annual optical efficiency of parabolic troughs has been found to be 23% higher than the efficiency of Fresnel fields in Almería, but it is only around 9% higher in Aswan. This implies that, in order to attain the same levelized cost of electricity than parabolic troughs, the required reduction of installation costs per mirror square meter is in the range of 10-25%. Also, it is concluded that linear Fresnel collectors are more suitable for low latitude areas. As a consequence of the studies carried out in this thesis, an innovative storage system has been patented. This system takes into account the variation of the flux intensity along the day, especially for East-West oriented solar fields. As a result, the invention would allow to exploit the impinging radiation along longer time every day, increasing appreciably the optical and thermal efficiencies.

Modern design of civil constructions such as office blocks, airport terminal buildings, factories, etc. incorporates more and more environmental considerations that lead to, amongst other elements, the use of glazed façades with shading devices to optimize energy consumption. These shading devices, normally slats or louvers, are very flexible structures exposed to the action of wind, and therefore aeroelastic effects such as galloping must be taken into account in their design. A typical cross-section for such elements is a Z-shaped profile made out of a central web and two side wings. The results of a parametric analysis based on static wind tunnel tests and performed on different Z-shaped louvers to determine translational galloping instability regions are presented in this paper.

Nowadays increasing fuel prices and upcoming pollutant emission regulations are becoming a growing concern for the shipping industry worldwide. While fuel prices will keep rising in future years, the new International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) and Sulphur Emissions Control Areas (SECA) regulations will forbid ships to use heavy fuel oils at certain situations. To fulfil with these regulations, the next step in the marine shipping business will comprise the use of cleaner fuels on board as well as developing new propulsion concept. In this work a new conceptual marine propulsion system is developed, based on the integration of diesel generators with fuel cells in a 2850 metric tonne of deadweight platform supply vessel. The efficiency of the two 250 kW methanol-fed Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system installed on board combined with the hydro dynamically optimized design of the hull of the ship will allow the ship to successfully operate at certain modes of operation while notably reduce the pollutant emissions to the atmosphere. Besides the cogeneration heat obtained from the fuel cell system will be used to answer different heating needs on board the vessel
