There is evidence that the climate changes and that now, the change is influenced and accelerated by the CO2 augmentation in atmosphere due to combustion by humans. Such ?Climate change? is on the policy agenda at the global level, with the aim of understanding and reducing its causes and to mitigate its consequences. In most countries and international organisms UNO (e.g. Rio de Janeiro 1992), OECD, EC, etc . . . the efforts and debates have been directed to know the possible causes, to predict the future evolution of some variable conditioners, and trying to make studies to fight against the effects or to delay the negative evolution of such. The Protocol of Kyoto 1997 set international efforts about CO2 emissions, but it was partial and not followed e.g. by USA and China . . . , and in Durban 2011 the ineffectiveness of humanity on such global real challenges was set as evident. Among all that, the elaboration of a global model was not boarded that can help to choose the best alternative between the feasible ones, to elaborate the strategies and to evaluate the costs, and the authors propose to enter in that frame for study. As in all natural, technological and social changes, the best-prepared countries will have the best bear and the more rapid recover. In all the geographic areas the alternative will not be the same one, but the model must help us to make the appropriated decision. It is essential to know those areas that are more sensitive to the negative effects of climate change, the parameters to take into account for its evaluation, and comprehensive plans to deal with it. The objective of this paper is to elaborate a mathematical model support of decisions, which will allow to develop and to evaluate alternatives of adaptation to the climatic change of different communities in Europe and Latin-America, mainly in especially vulnerable areas to the climatic change, considering in them all the intervening factors. The models will consider criteria of physical type (meteorological, edaphic, water resources), of use of the ground (agriculturist, forest, mining, industrial, urban, tourist, cattle dealer), economic (income, costs, benefits, infrastructures), social (population), politician (implementation, legislation), educative (Educational programs, diffusion) and environmental, at the present moment and the future. The intention is to obtain tools for aiding to get a realistic position for these challenges, which are an important part of the future problems of humanity in next decades.

The study area is La Colacha sub-basins from Arroyos Menores basins, natural areas at West and South of Río Cuarto in Province of Córdoba of Argentina, fertile with loess soils and monsoon temperate climate, but with soil erosions including regressive gullies that degrade them progressively. Cultivated gently since some hundred sixty years, coordinated action planning became necessary to conserve lands while keeping good agro-production. The authors had improved data on soils and on hydrology for the study area, evaluated systems of soil uses and actions to be recommended and applied Decision Support Systems (DSS) tools for that, and were conducted to use discrete multi-criteria models (MCDM) for the more global views about soil conservation and hydraulic management actions and about main types of use of soils. For that they used weighted PROMETHEE, ELECTRE, and AHP methods with a system of criteria grouped as environmental, economic and social, and criteria from their data on effects of criteria. The alternatives resulting offer indication for planning depending somehow on sub basins and on selections of weights, but actions for conservation of soils and water management measures are recommended to conserve the basins conditions, actually sensibly degrading, mainly keeping actual uses of the lands.

ABSTRACT People with disabilities often encounter problems of access to Information and Communications Technology (ICT), due to design and developments that do not take into account their functional differences and therefore put them at risk of social exclusion. It is increasingly common to find assistive products that allow to use different technologies (computers, Internet, mobile devices), but many of them are not well integrated because they work essentially modifying the platform where they are installed, beeing the second-generation access solutions. Beyond the assistive product development, which has certainly evolved positively in recent years, it is notable that there is a lack of tools and holistic approach to help developers and designers make accessible ICT. This doctoral thesis aims to validate the hypothesis that a holistic approach to application development and assistive ICT products, called Open Accessibility Framework, facilitates the development and integration of native accessible applications and assistive products, regardless of the technology used, resulting in third-generation access solutions that improve the use of such applications by people with disabilities. This work was developed under the AEGIS project (open Accessibility Everywhere: Groundwork, Infrastructure, Standards), which was partially funded by the European Commission (EC) under the Seventh Framework Programme and lasted four years. The methodology for the design, development and validation followed in this thesis is an adaptation of two existing design methodologies (User Centered Design and Goal Oriented Design), the implementation of the Open Accessibility Framework and the usage of different validation techniques. A training methodological framework ha also been developed to minimize the effect of the learning curve when users first try the solutions developed. This thesis presents the Open Accessibility Framework applied to ICT in three areas in which this work is developed: computers, Internet and mobile devices, based on the needs and problems of the disabled users in the use of ICT. Different instantiations of the Open Accessibility Framework are defined in the three aforementioned ICT areas and various examples of its particular implementations are described. The results of the evaluations of the particular implementations which have been carried with end users and experts, once discussed and contrasted with the hypotheses, have been used to test the validity of the Open Accessibility Framework for the native integration of assistive products in Information and Communications Technology. Finally, the future research lines and future work in the area of ICT accessibility are presented.

ABSTRACT: Nowadays, any telecommunications company that owns its own network must face the problem of maintaining it (service assurance). Provide a minimum quality of service to its customers must be one of its main objectives. This quality should be maintained although any incidents happen to occur in the network. This thesis aims to solve the problem of prioritizing the order in which the damaged cables, trails, path and circuits, within a backbone transport network, should be restored. This work begins with a detailed explanation about network maintenance issues and all the factors that influence decision-making problem. First of all, one solution based on Discrete Multicriteria methods is tried (ELECTRE I and AHP algorithms are used). Also, a solution based on neural networks (with two different approaches to the problem) is analyzed. Finally, this thesis proposes an algorithm based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), adapted to a problem of integers permutation, and a particular way of evaluating the best overall position of the swarm method. In addition, there is included an exhibition about telecommunications companies, its departments, internal processes, services offered to clients, physical networks, and key points to consider when implementing its integrated management systems.

Chestnut timber from Spain is not included as a structural timber in the European standard EN 1912 nor is it assigned to any strength class like other Spanish species. Therefore, a characterization of structural chestnut timber from Asturias was made according to the UNE EN 408:2004, and the characteristic values were calculated according to the UNE EN 384:2010. The values obtained allowed the assignment of a strength class according to UNE EN 338:2010. 260 samples of two sections (40x100 and 40x150 mm) were tested and a D24 strength class was assinged. Density and bending strength were the limiting parameters, and the value of modulus of elasticity was higher than the values asssigned to D24. The relationship between modulus of elasticity and the shear modulus obtained was approximately equal to 10, while this value in the UNE EN 384:2010 is set at 16. The characteristic of the wood which caused a higher percentage of failure was the presence of knots, resulting in significantly lower resistance values.

Introduction. Most studies have described how the weight loss is when different treatments are compared (1-3), while others have also compared the weight loss by sex (4), or have taken into account psychosocial (5) and lifestyle (6, 7) variables. However, no studies have examined the interaction of different variables and the importance of them in the weight loss. Objective. Create a model to discriminate the range of weight loss, determining the importance of each variable. Methods. 89 overweight people (BMI: 25-29.9 kg?m-2), aged from 18 to 50 years, participated in the study. Four types of treatments were randomly assigned: strength training (S), endurance training (E), strength and endurance training (SE), and control group (C). All participants followed a 25% calorie restriction diet. Two multivariate discriminant models including the variables age, sex, height, daily energy expenditure (EE), type of treatment (T), caloric restriction (CR), initial body weight (BW), initial fat mass (FM), initial muscle mass (MM) and initial bone mineral density (BMD) were performed having into account two groups: the first and fourth quartile of the % of weight loss in the first model; the groups above and below the mean of the % of weight loss in the second model. The discriminant models were built using the inclusion method in SPSS allowing us to find a function that could predict the body weight loss range that an overweight person could achieve in a 6 months weight loss intervention.Results. The first discriminant analysis predicted that a combination of the studied variables would discriminate between the two ranges of body weight loss with 81.4% of correct classification. The discriminant function obtained was (Wilks? Lambda=0.475, p=0.003): Discriminant score=-18.266-(0.060xage)- (1.282xsex[0=female;1=male])+(14.701xheight)+(0.002xEE)- (0.006xT[1=S;2=E;3=SE;4=C])-(0.047xCR)- (0.558xBW)+(0.475xFM)+(0.398xMM)+(3.499xBMD) The second discriminant model obtained would discriminate between the two groups of body weight loss with 74.4% of correct classification. The discriminant function obtained was (Wilks? Lambda=0.725, p=0.005): Discriminant score=-5.021-(0.052xage)- (0.543xsex[0=female;1=male])+(3.530xheight)+(0.001xEE)- (0.493xT[1=S;2=E;3=SE;4=C])+(0.003xCR)- (0.365xBW)+(0.368xFM)+(0.296xMM)+(4.034xBMD) Conclusion. The first developed model could predict the percentage of weight loss in the following way: if the discriminant score is close to 1.051, the range of weight loss will be from 7.44 to -4.64% and if it is close to - 1.003, the range will be from -11.03 to -25,00% of the initial body weight. With the second model if the discriminant score is close to 0.623 the body weight loss will be above -7.93% and if it is close to -0.595 will be below - 7.93% of the initial body weight. Abstract: In this paper we propose a generalization of the accepting splicingsystems introduced in Mitrana et al. (Theor Comput Sci 411:2414?2422,2010). More precisely, the input word is accepted as soon as a permittingword is obtained provided that no forbidding word has been obtained sofar, otherwise it is rejected. Note that in the new variant of acceptingsplicing system the input word is rejected if either no permitting word isever generated (like in Mitrana et al. in Theor Comput Sci 411:2414?2422,2010) or a forbidding word has been generated and no permitting wordhad been generated before. We investigate the computational power ofthe new variants of accepting splicing systems and the interrelationshipsamong them. We show that the new condition strictly increases thecomputational power of accepting splicing systems. Although there areregular languages that cannot be accepted by any of the splicing systemsconsidered here, the new variants can accept non-regular and even non-context-free languages, a situation that is not very common in the case of(extended) finite splicing systems without additional restrictions. We alsoshow that the smallest class of languages out of the four classes definedby accepting splicing systems is strictly included in the class of context-free languages. Solutions to a few decidability problems are immediatelyderived from the proof of this result.

The arrangement of atoms at the surface of a solid accounts for many of its properties: Hardness, chemical activity, corrosion, etc. are dictated by the precise surface structure. Hence, finding it, has a broad range of technical and industrial applications. The ability to solve this problem opens the possibility of designing by computer materials with properties tailored to specific applications. Since the search space grows exponentially with the number of atoms, its solution cannot be achieved for arbitrarily large structures. Presently, a trial and error procedure is used: an expert proposes an structure as a candidate solution and tries a local optimization procedure on it. The solution relaxes to the local minimum in the attractor basin corresponding to the initial point, that might be the one corresponding to the global minimum or not. This procedure is very time consuming and, for reasonably sized surfaces, can take many iterations and much effort from the expert. Here we report on a visualization environment designed to steer this process in an attempt to solve bigger structures and reduce the time needed. The idea is to use an immersive environment to interact with the computation. It has immediate feedback to assess the quality of the proposed structure in order to let the expert explore the space of candidate solutions. The visualization environment is also able to communicate with the de facto local solver used for this problem. The user is then able to send trial structures to the local minimizer and track its progress as they approach the minimum. This allows for simultaneous testing of candidate structures. The system has also proved very useful as an educational tool for the field.

he simulation of complex LoC (Lab-on-a-Chip) devices is a process that requires solving computationally expensive partial differential equations. An interesting alternative uses artificial neural networks for creating computationally feasible models based on MOR techniques. This paper proposes an approach that uses artificial neural networks for designing LoC components considering the artificial neural network topology as an isomorphism of the LoC device topology. The parameters of the trained neural networks are based on equations for modeling microfluidic circuits, analogous to electronic circuits. The neural networks have been trained to behave like AND, OR, Inverter gates. The parameters of the trained neural networks represent the features of LoC devices that behave as the aforementioned gates. This would mean that LoC devices universally compute.

We consider here uniform distributed pushdown automata systems (UDPAS), namely distributed pushdown automata systems having all components identical pushdown automata. We consider here just a single protocol for activating/deactivating components, namely a component stays active as long as it can perform moves, as well as two ways of accepting the input word: by empty stacks (all components have empty stacks) or by final states (all components are in final states), when the input word is completely read. We mainly investigate the computational power of UDPAS accepting by empty stacks and a few decidability and closure properties of the families of languages they define. Some directions for further work and open problems are also discussed.
