At the end of the 90’s a new research field emerged, the so-called Intelligent Virtual Environments for Training and/or Education (IVETs), which combines two areas of great complexity: Virtual Environments (VE) and Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS). In this way, the benefits of 3D environments (simulation of high risk or difficult-to-use environments, etc.) may be combined with those of an ITS (content and presentation customization, adaptation of the tutoring strategy to the student requirements, etc.) in order to provide added value educational/training solutions. The StudentModel, core of an ITS, represents the student’s knowledge and characteristics, and reflects the student’s reasoning process. Its complexity is even higher when the ITSs are applied on VEs because the new interaction possibilities offered by these environments must be considered as new key information pieces for student modelling, impacting all the educational process: the path followed by the student during their navigation through 3D scenarios; non-verbal behavior such as gaze direction; new types of hints or instructions that the tutoring module can provide to the student; new question types that the student can ask, etc. Thus, it is necessary for the ITS structure, which is embedded in the IVET, to be enriched by these aspects, while keeping a clear, structured and well defined architecture. Most approaches to SM on ITSs and IVETs don’t consider a complete enough taxonomy of possible knowledge about the student. In addition, most of them have validity only in certain domains or they are hard to be adapted for different ITSs. In order to overcome these limitations, we have proposed, in the framework of this doctoral research project, a newStudentModeling mechanism that is based onOntological Engineering and inspired on pedagogical principles, with a wide and flexible data model about the student that facilitates its adaptation and extension to different ITSs and learning applications, as well as a rich diagnosis method with non-monotonic reasoning capacities. The diagnosis method is able to infer the state of the learning objectives encompassed by the ITS and, fromit, the student’s knowledge state during the student’s process of learning. The proposed student modelling approach has been implemented and integrated in a software agent (the student modeling agent) within an existing software platform for the development of IVETs called MAEVIF. This platform was designed to be easily configurable for different learning applications. The proposed student modeling has been implemented and it has been instantiated for two types of learning environments: one for learning to use the graphical user interface of a software application and a Virtual Environment for procedural training. In addition, a methodology to guide on the application of this student modeling approach to each specific system has been developed.

ABSTRACT The concept of algorithm is one of the core subjects in computer science. It is extremely important, then, for students to get a good grasp of this concept from the very start of their training. In this respect, having a tool that helps and shepherds students through the process of learning this concept can make a huge difference to their instruction. Much has been written about how helpful algorithm visualization tools can be. Most authors agree that the most important part of the learning process is how students use the visualization tool. Learners who are actively involved in visualization consistently outperform other learners who view the algorithms passively. Therefore we think that one of the best exercises to learn an algorithm is for the user to simulate the algorithm execution while using a visualization tool, thus performing a visual algorithm simulation. The first part of this thesis presents the eMathTeacher set of requirements together with an eMathTeacher-compliant tool called GRAPHs. For some years, we have been developing a theory about what the key features of an effective e-learning system for teaching mathematical concepts and algorithms are. This led to the definition of eMathTeacher concept, which has materialized in the eMathTeacher set of requirements. An e-learning tool is eMathTeacher compliant if it works as a virtual math trainer. In other words, it has to be an on-line self-assessment tool that helps students to actively and autonomously learn math concepts or algorithms, correcting their mistakes and providing them with clues to find the right answer. In an eMathTeacher-compliant tool, algorithm simulation does not continue until the user enters the correct answer. GRAPHs is an extendible environment designed for active and independent visual simulation-based learning of graph algorithms, set up to integrate tools to help the user simulate the execution of different algorithms. Apart from the options of creating and editing the graph, and visualizing the changes made to the graph during simulation, the environment also includes step-by-step correction, algorithm pseudo-code animation, pop-up questions, data structure handling and XML-based interaction log creation features. On the other hand, assessment is a key part of any learning process. Through the use of e-learning environments huge amounts of data can be output about this process. Nevertheless, this information has to be interpreted and represented in a practical way to arrive at a sound assessment that is not confined to merely counting mistakes. This includes establishing relationships between the available data and also providing instructive linguistic descriptions about learning evolution. Additionally, formative assessment should specify the level of attainment of the learning goals defined by the instructor. Till now, only human experts were capable of making such assessments. While facing this problem, our goal has been to create a computational model that simulates the instructor’s reasoning and generates an enlightening learning evolution report in natural language. The second part of this thesis presents the granular linguistic model of learning assessment to model the assessment of the learning process and implement the automated generation of a formative assessment report. The model is a particularization of the granular linguistic model of a phenomenon (GLMP) paradigm, based on fuzzy logic and the computational theory of perceptions, to the assessment phenomenon. This technique, useful for implementing complex assessment criteria using inference systems based on linguistic rules, has been applied to two particular cases: the assessment of the interaction logs generated by GRAPHs and the criterion-based assessment of Moodle quizzes. As a consequence, several expert systems to assess different algorithm simulations and Moodle quizzes have been implemented, tested and used in the classroom. Apart from the grade, the designed expert systems also generate natural language progress reports on the achieved proficiency level, based exclusively on the objective data gathered from correct and incorrect responses. In addition, two applications, capable of being configured to implement the expert systems, have been developed. One is geared up to process the files output by GRAPHs and the other one is a Moodle plug-in set up to perform the assessment based on the quizzes results.

ABSTRACT Recently, there has been a surge of interest in learning to code, focusing especially on career opportunities. It is easy to understand why: the number of jobs for programmers and computer scientists is growing rapidly. On the other hand, the psychologists think that computational thinking is a fundamental skill for everyone, not just for computer scientists. To reading, writing, and arithmetic, we should add computational thinking to every child’s analytical ability. It is necessary to change workforce requirements mean that new workers will need ever more sophisticated skills in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. Consequently, the contents about Information Technology as well as electronics, coding, robotics and control increase in Technology Education in High School . The development and utilization of the Virtual Laboratories of Control and Robotics help to achieve this goal. We focus on control and robotics because a control and robotics project includes other technologies contents like electronics, coding,... A web site with Virtual Laboratories of Control and Robotics was implemented. In this work, six groups of virtual laboratories for teaching control and robotics in preuniversity level are shown. These Virtual Laboratories were used for teaching students at high school. The statistics of teaching-learning process allow to check some issues of this work. The laboratories, the improvement of learning (concepts and procedures) and interactivity are described and are compared to similar applications. They share identical learning objectives but they lack the virtual laboratory aspect. Some experiences with students are explained too. The results suggest that within high school technology education, virtual laboratories can be exploited as effective and motivational learning environments.

ABSTRACT Social networks are as old as human relations, since cooperative work has always been indispensable in all processes of association, from those composed of simple cells to those formed by living beings. Society is shaped by a large amount of situations that stimulate this cooperation. Since the creation of the European Higher Education Area, the use of virtual learning environments that favor more transparent and objective evaluation has been promoted. On-line social networks are the digital interfaces most widely used by university students, which is the reason why many experts recommend an analysis of the educational utility of this type of applications. Following these recommendations, an on-line social network called Formatio was created, which was used in order to support the teaching and learning process in higher education. The general objective of this doctoral dissertation was to evaluate the level of acceptance of this virtual learning environment by the university students who participated in this study. In order to evaluate the use of the platform, the activity created by 172 students chosen at random was analyzed; they were registered in the course on Statistics and Information and Communication Technology of the degree program in Sciences of Physical Activity and Sport during the academic year 2010/2011. With the goal of appraising the educational utility of on-line social networks, a tool for Evaluation of On-line Educational Resources (EOER) was designed, validated, and applied to another random sample of 452 students from the same department during the academic year 2011/2012. The results confirm the success of this type of virtual spaces, thanks to the high frequency of use achieved and the good grades obtained by the students who had a favorable opinion of the advantages of using on-line social networks in higher education. Out of all the resources analyzed, the Formatio on-line social network was the option that received the best evaluation, followed by Moodle and Facebook, which were second and third, and Twitter and YouTube, in fourth and fifth place respectively. This study establishes a starting point for future research that aims to obtain certain qualitative and quantitative indicators that will make it easier to engage in a fairer evaluation of the parties involved in education systems, which will help open the doors of our society to responsibility, efficiency, transparency, and objectivity.

This paper presents a blended learning approach and a study evaluating instruction in a software engineering-related course unit as part of an undergraduate engineering degree program in computing. In the past, the course unit had a lecture-based format. In view of student underachievement and the high course unit dropout rate, a distance-learning system was deployed, where students were allowed to choose between a distance-learning approach driven by a moderate constructivist instructional model or a blended-learning approach. The results of this experience are presented, with the aim of showing the effectiveness of the teaching/learning system deployed compared to the lecture-based system previously in place. The grades earned by students under the new system, following the distance-learning and blended-learning courses, are compared statistically to the grades attained in earlier years in the traditional face-to-face classroom (lecture-based) learning.

The design of collective protections of construction works is a topic that is integrated within one of the MBTI subjects. This paper presents an experience for teaching the design of collective protection in building works. Teaching has been done in a bended way. This subject is taught as part of the content of a wider subject included in the Master "Building Technological Innovation" (MBTI) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM). This Master's degree is a postgraduate of research nature. Graduating in MBTI implies that students are in a position to begin their PhD thesis. At this stage, often students are not able to follow the rigour established by the schedule of classes. For this reason it is interesting that part of the teaching is developed in a non-classroom based way.

The goal of this paper is to show the results of an on-going experience on teaching project management to grade students by following a development scheme of management related competencies on an individual basis. In order to achieve that goal, the students are organized in teams that must solve a problem and manage the development of a feasible solution to satisfy the needs of a client. The innovative component advocated in this paper is the formal introduction of negotiating and virtual team management aspects, as different teams from different universities at different locations and comprising students with different backgrounds must collaborate and compete amongst them. The different learning aspects are identified and the improvement levels are reflected in a rubric that has been designed ad hoc for this experience. Finally, the effort frameworks for the student and instructor have been established according to the requirements of the Bologna paradigms. This experience is developed through a software-based support system allowing blended learning for the theoretical and individual?s work aspects, blogs, wikis, etc., as well as project management tools based on WWW that allow the monitoring of not only the expected deliverables and the achievement of the goals but also the progress made on learning as established in the defined rubric

The confluence of three-dimensional (3D) virtual worlds with social networks imposes on software agents, in addition to conversational functions, the same behaviours as those common to human-driven avatars. In this paper, we explore the possibilities of the use of metabots (metaverse robots) with motion capabilities in complex virtual 3D worlds and we put forward a learning model based on the techniques used in evolutionary computation for optimizing the fuzzy controllers which will subsequently be used by metabots for moving around a virtual environment.

Abstract In an increasingly competitive higher education market, collaboration between universities is an effective strategy for gaining access to the global market. The development of joint degrees is an important mechanism for strengthening academic research collaborations and diversifying knowledge. Joint degrees are becoming increasingly implemented in universities around the world. In Europe, the Bologna process and the Erasmus programme have encouraged both the global recognition of joint and double degrees and promoted close collaboration between academic institutions. In the unstoppable process of globalization and educational convergence, the use of e-learning systems for supporting both blended and online courses is becoming a growing trend. Since e-learning systems covers a wide range of courses, it becomes necessary to find a suitable solution that enables universities to support and manage joint degrees through their e-learning systems in accordance with the collaboration agreements established by the universities involved. This dissertation will address the following research questions: 1. What factors need to be considered in the implementation and management of joint degrees? 2. How can the current e-learning systems support the development of joint degrees? 3. What other services and systems need to be adapted by universities interested in participating in a joint degree through their e-learning systems? The implementation of joint degrees using e-learning systems is complex and involves technical, administrative, security, cultural, financial and legal challenges. This dissertation proposes a series of contributions to help solve some of the identified challenges. One of the cornerstones of this proposal is a conceptual model of all the relevant issues related to the support of joint degrees by means of e-learning systems. After defining the conceptual model, this dissertation proposes a policy-driven architecture for implementing inter-institutional degree collaborations through e-learning systems as stipulated by a collaboration agreement signed by two universities. The author has focused on the workflow management component of this architecture. Finally, the building blocks for achieving interoperability of learning object repositories have been identified and validated. The use of multimedia services in education is a growing trend, providing rich e-learning services that improve the communication and interaction between teachers and students. Within these e-learning services, we have focused on the use of videoconferencing and lecture recording as the best-suited services to support collaborative learning scenarios. The contributions have been validated within national and European research projects that the author has been involved in.

Services in smart environments pursue to increase the quality of people?s lives. The most important issues when developing this kind of environments is testing and validating such services. These tasks usually imply high costs and annoying or unfeasible real-world testing. In such cases, artificial societies may be used to simulate the smart environment (i.e. physical environment, equipment and humans). With this aim, the CHROMUBE methodology guides test engineers when modeling human beings. Such models reproduce behaviors which are highly similar to the real ones. Originally, these models are based on automata whose transitions are governed by random variables. Automaton?s structure and the probability distribution functions of each random variable are determined by a manual test and error process. In this paper, it is presented an alternative extension of this methodology which avoids the said manual process. It is based on learning human behavior patterns automatically from sensor data by using machine learning techniques. The presented approach has been tested on a real scenario, where this extension has given highly accurate human behavior models,

The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp hereby presents the results of two pilot distance learning training programmes, developed under the umbrella of the AFRICA BUILD project (FP7). The two courses focused on evidence-based medicine (EBM): with the aim of enhancing research and education, via novel approaches and to identify research needs emanating from the field. These pilot experiences, which were run both in English-speaking (Ghana), and French-speaking (Mali and Cameroon) partner institutions, produced targeted courses for the strengthening of research methodology and policy. The courses and related study materials are in the public domain and available through the AFRICA BUILD Portal (http://www.africabuild.eu/taxonomy/term/37); the training modules were delivered live via Dudal webcasts. This paper assesses the success and difficulties of transferring EBM skills with these two specific training programmes, offered through three different approaches: fully online facultative courses, fully online tutor supported courses or through a blended approach with both online and face-to-face sessions. Key factors affecting the selection of participants, the accessibility of the courses, how the learning resources are offered, and how interactive online communities are formed, are evaluated and discussed.
