Introducing cover crops (CC) interspersed with intensively fertilized crops in rotation has the potential to reduce nitrate leaching. This paper evaluates various strategies involving CC between maize and compares the economic and environmental results with respect to a typical maize?fallow rotation. The comparison is performed through stochastic (Monte-Carlo) simulation models of farms? profits using probability distribution functions (pdfs) of yield and N fertilizer saving fitted with data collected from various field trials and pdfs of crop prices and the cost of fertilizer fitted from statistical sources. Stochastic dominance relationships are obtained to rank the most profitable strategies from a farm financial perspective. A two-criterion comparison scheme is proposed to rank alternative strategies based on farm profit and nitrate leaching levels, taking the baseline scenario as the maize?fallow rotation. The results show that when CC biomass is sold as forage instead of keeping it in the soil, greater profit and less leaching of nitrates are achieved than in the baseline scenario. While the fertilizer saving will be lower if CC is sold than if it is kept in the soil, the revenue obtained from the sale of the CC compensates for the reduced fertilizer savings. The results show that CC would perhaps provide a double dividend of greater profit and reduced nitrate leaching in intensive irrigated cropping systems in Mediterranean regions.

A subset of durum wheat Spanish landraces, previously evaluated for yield at low and high nitrogen (N) levels, was analysed for quality, protein content (P) and sodium dodecyl sulphate sedimentation (SDSS) test. The evaluation was carried out at the two N rates and in two years. The influence of prolamin alleles at the Glu-1, Glu-3, Glu-B2 and Gli-1 loci on quality parameters was also studied. The non significant Variety-by-Year or Variety-by-N interactions suggested that year and N affected all the varieties in a similar manner. Year and N effects were larger than variety effect for P, which increased with N. In contrast, variety genotype exhibited a stronger influence on SDSS test, which was not affected by year and fertilizer. Variety effects on P did not reflect the variety differences for SDSS test. A high positive influence of some prolamin alleles on quality parameters was detected, mainly for SDSS values. No correlation between yield and P was detected in the landraces adapted to low N. Based on the results of yield and quality evaluations, four landraces with high yield and high gluten strength were pre-selected for low N production.

An experimental and numerical study of ballistic impacts on steel plates at various temperatures (700ºC, 400ºC and room temperature) has been carried out. The motivation for this work is the blade‐off event that may occur inside a jet engine turbine. However, as a first attempt to understand this complex loading process, a somewhat simpler approach is carried out in the present work. The material used in this study is the FV535 martensitic stainless steel, which is one of the most commonly used materials for turbine casings. Based on material test data, a Modified Johnson‐Cook (MJC) model was calibrated for numerical simulations using the LS‐DYNA explicit finite element code (see Figure 1). To check the mesh size sensitivity, 2D axisymmetric finite element models with three different mesh sizes and configurations were used for the various temperatures. Two fixed meshes with 64 and 128 elements over the 2mm thick plate and one mesh with 32 elements over the thickness with adaptive remeshing were used in the simulations. The formation of adiabatic shear bands in the perforation process has been found critical in order to achieve good results. Adiabatic shear bands are formed by the temperature rise due to the accumulation of plastic strain during impact (see Figure 2). The influence of the thermal softening in the plastic model has hence been analyzed for the room temperature impact tests, where the temperature gradient is highest

Improved management of nitrogen (N) in agriculture is necessary to achieve a sustainable balance between the production of food and other biomass, and the unwanted effects of N on water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity deterioration and human health. To analyse farm N-losses and the complex interactions within farming systems, efficient methods for identifying emissions hotspots and evaluating mitigation measures are therefore needed. The present paper aims to fill this gap at the farm and landscape scales. Six agricultural landscapes in Poland (PL), the Netherlands (NL), France (FR), Italy (IT), Scotland (UK) and Denmark (DK) were studied, and a common method was developed for undertaking farm inventories and the derivation of farm N balances, N surpluses and for evaluating uncertainty for the 222 farms and 11 440 ha of farmland included in the study. In all landscapes, a large variation in the farm N surplus was found, and thereby a large potential for reductions. The highest average N surpluses were found in the most livestock-intensive landscapes of IT, FR, and NL; on average 202 ± 28, 179 ± 63 and 178 ± 20 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. All landscapes showed hotspots, especially from livestock farms, including a special UK case with large-scale landless poultry farming. Overall, the average N surplus from the land-based UK farms dominated by extensive sheep and cattle grazing was only 31 ± 10 kg N ha−1 yr−1, but was similar to the N surplus of PL and DK (122 ± 20 and 146 ± 55 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively) when landless poultry farming was included. We found farm N balances to be a useful indicator for N losses and the potential for improving N management. Significant correlations to N surplus were found, both with ammonia air concentrations and nitrate concentrations in soils and groundwater, measured during the period of N management data collection in the landscapes from 2007–2009. This indicates that farm N surpluses may be used as an independent dataset for validation of measured and modelled N emissions in agricultural landscapes. No significant correlation was found with N measured in surface waters, probably because of spatial and temporal variations in groundwater buffering and biogeochemical reactions affecting N flows from farm to surface waters. A case study of the development in N surplus from the landscape in DK from 1998–2008 showed a 22% reduction related to measures targeted at N emissions from livestock farms. Based on the large differences in N surplus between average N management farms and the most modern and N-efficient farms, it was concluded that additional N-surplus reductions of 25–50%, as compared to the present level, were realistic in all landscapes. The implemented N-surplus method was thus effective for comparing and synthesizing results on farm N emissions and the potentials of mitigation options. It is recommended for use in combination with other methods for the assessment of landscape N emissions and farm N efficiency, including more detailed N source and N sink hotspot mapping, measurements and modelling.

Due to a growing concern over global warming, the bituminous mixture industry is making a constant effort to diminish its emissions by reducing manufacturing and installation temperatures without compromising the mechanical properties of the bituminous mixtures. The use of mixtures with tyre rubber has demonstrated that these mixtures can be economical and ecological and that they improve the behaviour of the pavements. However, bituminous mixtures with a high rubber content present one major drawback: they require higher mixing and installation temperatures due to the elevated viscosity caused by the high rubber content and thus they produce larger amounts of greenhouse gas emissions than conventional bituminous mixtures. This article presents a study of the effect of four viscosity-reducing additives (Sasobit®, Asphaltan A®, Asphaltan B® and Licomont BS 100®) on a bitumen modified with 15% rubber. The results of this study indicate that these additives successfully reduce viscosity, increase the softening temperature and reduce penetration. However, they do not have a clear effect on the test for elastic recovery and ductility at 25 °C.

A new method is presented to generate reduced order models (ROMs) in Fluid Dynamics problems of industrial interest. The method is based on the expansion of the flow variables in a Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) basis, calculated from a limited number of snapshots, which are obtained via Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Then, the POD-mode amplitudes are calculated as minimizers of a properly defined overall residual of the equations and boundary conditions. The method includes various ingredients that are new in this field. The residual can be calculated using only a limited number of points in the flow field, which can be scattered either all over the whole computational domain or over a smaller projection window. The resulting ROM is both computationally efficient(reconstructed flow fields require, in cases that do not present shock waves, less than 1 % of the time needed to compute a full CFD solution) and flexible(the projection window can avoid regions of large localized CFD errors). Also, for problems related with aerodynamics, POD modes are obtained from a set of snapshots calculated by a CFD method based on the compressible Navier Stokes equations and a turbulence model (which further more includes some unphysical stabilizing terms that are included for purely numerical reasons), but projection onto the POD manifold is made using the inviscid Euler equations, which makes the method independent of the CFD scheme. In addition, shock waves are treated specifically in the POD description, to avoid the need of using a too large number of snapshots. Various definitions of the residual are also discussed, along with the number and distribution of snapshots, the number of retained modes, and the effect of CFD errors. The method is checked and discussed on several test problems that describe (i) heat transfer in the recirculation region downstream of a backwards facing step, (ii) the flow past a two-dimensional airfoil in both the subsonic and transonic regimes, and (iii) the flow past a three-dimensional horizontal tail plane. The method is both efficient and numerically robust in the sense that the computational effort is quite small compared to CFD and results are both reasonably accurate and largely insensitive to the definition of the residual, to CFD errors, and to the CFD method itself, which may contain artificial stabilizing terms. Thus, the method is amenable for practical engineering applications.

EWT back contact solar cells are manufactured from very thin silicon wafers. These wafers are drilled by means of a laser process creating a matrix of tiny holes with a density of approximately 125 holes per square centimeter. Their influence in the stiffness and mechanical strength has been studied. To this end, both wafers with and without holes have been tested with the ring on ring test. Numerical simulations of the tests have been carried out through the Finite Element Method taking into account the non-linearities present in the tests. It's shown that one may use coarse meshes without holes to simulate the test and after that sub models are used for the estimation of the stress concentration around the holes.

EWT solar cells start from drilled wafers with approximately 100 holes/cm2. These holes act as stress concentrators leading to a reduction in the mechanical strength of this type of wafers. The viability of cells with higher density of holes has been studied. To this end, sets of wafers with different density of holes have been characterized. The ring on ring test has been employed and FE models have been developed to simulate the test. The statistical evaluation permits to draw conclusions about the reduction of the strength depending on the density of holes. Moreover, the stress concentration around the holes has been studied by means of the FE method employing the sub-modeling technique. The maximum principal stress of EWT wafers with twice the density of holes of commercial ones is almost the same. However, the mutual interaction between the stress concentration effects around neighboring holes is only observed for wafers with a density of 200 holes/cm2

In this paper we present the MultiFarm dataset, which has been designed as a benchmark for multilingual ontology matching. The MultiFarm dataset is composed of a set of ontologies translated in different languages and the corresponding alignments between these ontologies. It is based on the OntoFarm dataset, which has been used successfully for several years in the Ontology Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI). By translating the ontologies of the OntoFarm dataset into eight different languages – Chinese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish – we created a comprehensive set of realistic test cases. Based on these test cases, it is possible to evaluate and compare the performance of matching approaches with a special focus on multilingualism.

There are two main objectives in this thesis: The first, to analyse the use of endosperm proteins and SSRs to rationalize the wheat collections, and the second, to study the influence on quality of endosperm proteins, year and nitrogen fertilization in a group of Spanish landraces. For the first objective, we studied the genetic diversity of the collection of Triticum monococcum L. (cultivated einkorn), and of a sample of the collection of Triticum turgidum L. (durum wheat) maintained at the CRF-INIA. Two and 6 gliadin loci, and 6 and 24 SSRs, were used for einkorn and durum wheat, respectively. Both collections possessed a high genetic diversity, being the differentiation large between varieties and small within them. Gliadin loci showed great variability, being the loci Gli-2 the most useful for distinguish among varieties. In einkorn, the gliadins showed higher discrimination power than SSRs; although SSRs identified more genotypes in durum wheat. Large number of alleles were found; 24 and 38 in gliadins, and 29 and 203 in SSRs, for einkorn and durum wheat, respectively. In durum wheat, 17 new alleles of gliadins were identified, which indicate that Spanish durum wheat germplasm is rather unique. Some associations between prolamin alleles and geographical and phylogenetic origin of varieties were found in both species. The value of endosperm proteins (6 gliadin loci, 2 glutenin loci and total protein) and SSRs (24 loci) for validation of duplicates, and monitoring the intra-accession variability, was studied in 23 potential duplicates of durum wheat. The results indicated that biotypes and duplicated accessions showed identical gliadin genotype, few or none differences in HMW glutenin subunits and total protein, and less than three different SSR loci. A similar result was obtained for biotypes of T. monococcum. However, the discrepancies in some cases support the convenience to use together both marker systems. A good concordance among endosperm proteins, agro-morphological traits and SSRs were also found, mainly when differences between genotypes were high. However, agro-morphological traits discriminated less between accessions than molecular markers. For the second objective of the thesis, we analysed the allelic variation at seven prolamin loci, involved in durum wheat quality: Glu-A1 and Glu-B1 of HMW glutenin, Glu-A3, Glu-B3 and Glu-B2 of B-LMW glutenin, and Gli-A1 and Gli-B1 of gliadin. The subsample analysed included landraces from all the Spanish provinces where the crop was traditionally cultivated. All the loci, except for Glu-B2, showed high genetic variability, being Glu-3 the most polymorphic. A total of 65 alleles were studied, 29 of them being new, which represent an important source of variability for quality improvement. Differences in prolamin composition were detected between convar. turgidum and the North zone, and the convar. durum and the South zone; the genotype Glu-B3new-1 - Gli-B1new-1 was very common in the convar. turgidum, while the Glu- B3a - Gli-B1c, associated with better quality, was more frequent in the convar. durum. Higher variability was detected in the convar. turgidum than in the convar. durum, mainly at the Glu-B1 and Glu-B3, showing that this convariety could be a valuable source of new glutenin alleles. The subsample was evaluated for quality (protein content, P, and sedimentation test, SDSS) with two doses of nitrogen fertiliser (N), and in two different years. No significant Variety x Year or Variety x Nitrogen interactions were detected. For P, environmental (year and N) effects were higher than variety effect, being P values , in general, larger with high dose of N. The variety exhibited a strong influence on SDSS test, which was not affected by year and N. Increasing values of P did not significantly influence on gluten strength, estimated with the SDSS. Respect to the prolamin effects on gluten strength, the superiority of Glu-B3a was confirmed; although a high positive effect of the new alleles Glu-A3new-1, and Glu-B3new-6 and new-9 was also detected. The no correlation between yield (evaluated in a previous research) and P, in the landraces adapted to low N, allowed to select four landraces with high yield and high gluten strength for low N production.

Abstract This paper describes a two-part methodology for managing the risk posed by water supply variability to irrigated agriculture. First, an econometric model is used to explain the variation in the production value of irrigated agriculture. The explanatory variables include an index of irrigation water availability (surface storage levels), a price index representative of the crops grown in each geographical unit, and a time variable. The model corrects for autocorrelation and it is applied to 16 representative Spanish provinces in terms of irrigated agriculture. In the second part, the fitted models are used for the economic evaluation of drought risk. In flow variability in the hydrological system servicing each province is used to perform ex-ante evaluations of economic output for the upcoming irrigation season. The model?s error and the probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the reservoirs? storage variations are used to generate Monte Carlo (Latin Hypercube) simulations of agricultural output 7 and 3 months prior to the irrigation season. The results of these simulations illustrate the different risk profiles of each management unit, which depend on farm productivity and on the probability distribution function of water in flow to reservoirs. The potential for ex-ante drought impact assessments is demonstrated. By complementing hydrological models, this method can assist water managers and decisionmakers in managing reservoirs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the sustainability of farm irrigation systems in the Cébalat district in northern Tunisia. It addressed the challenging topic of sustainable agriculture through a bio-economic approach linking a biophysical model to an economic optimisation model. A crop growth simulation model (CropSyst) was used to build a database to determine the relationships between agricultural practices, crop yields and environmental effects (salt accumulation in soil and leaching of nitrates) in a context of high climatic variability. The database was then fed into a recursive stochastic model set for a 10-year plan that allowed analysing the effects of cropping patterns on farm income, salt accumulation and nitrate leaching. We assumed that the long-term sustainability of soil productivity might be in conflict with farm profitability in the short-term. Assuming a discount rate of 10% (for the base scenario), the model closely reproduced the current system and allowed to predict the degradation of soil quality due to long-term salt accumulation. The results showed that there was more accumulation of salt in the soil for the base scenario than for the alternative scenario (discount rate of 0%). This result was induced by applying a higher quantity of water per hectare for the alternative as compared to a base scenario. The results also showed that nitrogen leaching is very low for the two discount rates and all climate scenarios. In conclusion, the results show that the difference in farm income between the alternative and base scenarios increases over time to attain 45% after 10 years.

Background: There are 600,000 new malaria cases daily worldwide. The gold standard for estimating the parasite burden and the corresponding severity of the disease consists in manually counting the number of parasites in blood smears through a microscope, a process that can take more than 20 minutes of an expert microscopist’s time. Objective: This research tests the feasibility of a crowdsourced approach to malaria image analysis. In particular, we investigated whether anonymous volunteers with no prior experience would be able to count malaria parasites in digitized images of thick blood smears by playing a Web-based game. Methods: The experimental system consisted of a Web-based game where online volunteers were tasked with detecting parasites in digitized blood sample images coupled with a decision algorithm that combined the analyses from several players to produce an improved collective detection outcome. Data were collected through the MalariaSpot website. Random images of thick blood films containing Plasmodium falciparum at medium to low parasitemias, acquired by conventional optical microscopy, were presented to players. In the game, players had to find and tag as many parasites as possible in 1 minute. In the event that players found all the parasites present in the image, they were presented with a new image. In order to combine the choices of different players into a single crowd decision, we implemented an image processing pipeline and a quorum algorithm that judged a parasite tagged when a group of players agreed on its position. Results: Over 1 month, anonymous players from 95 countries played more than 12,000 games and generated a database of more than 270,000 clicks on the test images. Results revealed that combining 22 games from nonexpert players achieved a parasite counting accuracy higher than 99%. This performance could be obtained also by combining 13 games from players trained for 1 minute. Exhaustive computations measured the parasite counting accuracy for all players as a function of the number of games considered and the experience of the players. In addition, we propose a mathematical equation that accurately models the collective parasite counting performance. Conclusions: This research validates the online gaming approach for crowdsourced counting of malaria parasites in images of thick blood films. The findings support the conclusion that nonexperts are able to rapidly learn how to identify the typical features of malaria parasites in digitized thick blood samples and that combining the analyses of several users provides similar parasite counting accuracy rates as those of expert microscopists. This experiment illustrates the potential of the crowdsourced gaming approach for performing routine malaria parasite quantification, and more generally for solving biomedical image analysis problems, with future potential for telediagnosis related to global health challenges.

During the 1950s and 1960s the design of irrigation systems in Europe underwent change. Traditional surface irrigation was replaced by pressure irrigation, with the delivery method shifting from a scheduled type to an on-demand one. The advantages obtained with this new system led to a significant development of on-demand pressurised irrigation districts, especially in the Southern countries (France, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain). On-demand pressurised irrigation has since evolved in a continuous manner in which, with the purpose of gaining productivity, on-farm equipment and automation instruments have seen improvements. Such developments, along with market fluctuations, reductions in transport costs, globalisation and the influence of agricultural subsidies, have resulted in changes in the crop pattern. The farming of new crops may require more water and the consumption may become greater. In addition to this, other phenomena, such as the frequently-debated effects of climate change, reveal scenarios in which an increase in temperatures and the accompanying reductions in rainfall are expected. One consequence of this would be an increase in irrigation requirements and subsequent impact on irrigation networks. All such circumstances should be taken into account in both the design of new irrigation districts and the upgrading of the existing ones. Irrigation networks should be of a size that allows them to meet increases in consumption. The robustness of the network, defined as its capacity to absorb increments in water requirements, becomes a key point to be taken into account in the design phase. Given that there are several parameters that influence the calculus of design flows, such robustness may be obtained in different ways and at varying costs. In the context of this, the thesis reviews the state of the art, analyses the role and influence of each parameter, establishes a procedure for checking the design and robustness of on-demand irrigation networks, and sets design criteria for selecting the most effective range and combination of parameters that provide the network with such robustness.

For centuries, earth has been used as a construction material.
