Financiamento das principais guerras do ocidente no século XX : uma análise exploratória

O século XX foi um século marcado fortemente pela guerra e destruição numa escala nunca anteriormente vista. Neste contexto é importante estudar não só as consequências óbvias como as perdas humanas e destruição material, mas também as consequências menos óbvias como as diversas formas como as guerras foram financiadas. Nesta análise, verifiquei de que forma Portugal, EUA, Reino Unido e Alemanha financiaram os seus esforços de guerra e quais as consequências que isso teve nas respectivas economias nos anos seguintes às guerras. O foco deste estudo centrou-se na 1ª e a 2ª Guerras Mundiais, estendendo-se às actividades comerciais de Portugal durante a 2ªGM e às intervenções dos EUA na Guerra da Coreia e na Guerra do Vietname. Conclui-se neste estudo que independentemente do tipo de financiamento escolhido, estas guerras causaram uma degradação severa das condições de vida dos habitantes países envolvidos, seja pelo aumento dos impostos ou pela inflação causada. O estudo sugere ainda que em tempo de guerra os governos optam preponderantemente pelo endividamento e inflação monetária em detrimento do aumento dos impostos.

The 20th century was strongly affected by war and destruction in a scale unknown until then. Therefore, it is important to study not only the obvious consequences like the human losses, but also the not so obvious consequences like the different ways the wars were financed. In this analysis, I studied in which way Portugal, USA, United Kingdom and Germany financed their war efforts and what were the economic consequences in the years after the wars ended. The focus of this study was centered in the 1st and 2nd World Wars and to the commercial activities of Portugal during the 2nd World War and to the USA's military interventions in the Korean and Vietnam wars. This study concludes that regardless of the type of war financing chosen, this wars caused a severe degradation of the conditions of the population in the belligerent countries, either by the raising of taxes or by inflation. The study suggests that in war times, governments primarily choose debt and monetary inflation instead of rises in taxes to finance the war efforts.
