A Technology Intelligence Process for a High Technology Company

Tämä diplomityö määrittelee teknologiaseurantaprosessin, jolla korkean teknologian yritys voi ohjata toimintaansa. Korkean teknologian yrityksille on olennaista seurata teknologian kehitystä. Tällaiset yritykset tarvitsevat hyvin määritellyn järjestelmän, jolla ne voivat seurata ja ennustaa teknologista kehitystä.Työssä esitetään, että teknologiaseuranta ja kilpailuseuranta (competitive intelligence) ovat business intelligencen osa-alueita, jotka täydentävät ja tukevat toisiaan. Tärkeä havainto on, että business intelligence -prosessi on ennen kaikkea organisaation oppimisprosessi. Tästä seuraa, että minkä tahansa BI-prosessin tulisi perustua niihin prosesseihin, joiden avulla organisaatiot oppivat. Työssä esitetään myös, miten business intelligence, tietojohtaminen (knowledge management) ja organisaatioiden oppiminen liittyvät toisiinsa.Teknologiaseuranta on elintärkeä toiminto korkean teknologian yritykselle; sitä tarvitaan monella strategisen johtamisen osa-alueella, ainakin teknologia-, markkinointi- ja henkilöstöjohtamisessa. Teknologiaseurannan havaitaan myös olevan korkean teknologian yritykselle erittäin tärkeä ydinosaamisalue, jota ei voi kokonaan ulkoistaa.Työssä esitellään teknologiaseurantaprosessi, joka perustuu yleiselle business intelligence -prosessille ja siitä johdetulle kilpailuseurantaprosessille. Työssä myös esitetään ehdotus siitä, kuinka teknologiaseuranta voitaisiin järjestää korkean teknologian yrityksessä. Esitetty ratkaisu perustuu Community of practice -käsitteeseen. Community of practice on vapaaehtoisuuteen perustuva tiimi, jonka jäseniä yhdistää kiinnostus johonkin asiaan ja oppimishalu. Esimerkkiyrityksessä on tunnistettu selkeä tarve yhtenäiseen ja koordinoituun teknologiaseurantaan. Työssä esitetään alustava teknologiaseurantaprosessi esimerkkiyritykselle ja tunnistetaan teknologiaseurantaprosessin asiakkaat ja tekijät.

This Master's Thesis defines a technology intelligence process for a company operating in high technology business. For high technology companies monitoring technological development is a crucial capability. They will need a well-defined system of monitoring and forecasting technological changes relevant to their existing and future business.In the thesis it is concluded that competitive intelligence and technology intelligence are subareas of business intelligence and that they overlap and support each other. It is claimed that a business intelligence process is essentially a process of organisational learning. An important conclusion following this finding is that any business intelligence process in a company should be based on the organisational knowledge creation process. The thesis also presents how organisational learning, knowledge management and business intelligence are linked to each other.Technology intelligence is a crucial capability for a high-technology company; it is needed in many areas of strategic management, foremost in technology management, marketing management, and human resources management. TI was also identified as a core competence that can not be totally outsourced.The thesis presents a technology intelligence process built on the generic business intelligence process and the competitive intelligence process based thereon. Additionally, the thesis presents a suggestion on how technology intelligence could be organised in a high technology company. The solution proposed is based on Communities of practice that are voluntary teams joined together by a mutual interest and passion for learning. For the case company, a clear need for coherent and co-ordinated technology intelligence was identified. The thesis also suggests a preliminary technology intelligence process for the case company and identifies customers of and contributors to the process within the company.
