Fragmento e ruína: retratos modernos

A profunda crise identitária que caracterizou, negativamente, a modernidade literária e artística em finais do século XIX e inícios do último século, reflectiu-se numa certa “insolvência” representativa e auto-representativa produtora de imagens insistentes de fragmentação e de ‘simulacros ruinosos’ de identidade – reutilizando a formulação derrideana – em que o tópico do corpo desmantelado por um lado, e os motivos da máscara e do disfarce ou a figura do clown, por outro, adquirem particular ressonância estético-simbólica. É nosso propósito evocar, detendo-nos em especial no panorama artístico nacional na viragem de século, com ênfase para os auto-retratos de Aurélia de Souza, um novo paradigma de representação da imagem do homem particularmente eloquente na confecção geracional daquela que Eduardo Lourenço haveria de apelidar “suicidária modernidade”.

The deep identity crisis that characterized, negatively, literary and artistic modernity at the end of the 19th century and early 20th century was reflected in a certain representative and self-representative “insolvency”, producing repeated images of fragmentation and “ruinous simulacra” of identity – to apply the terms of Derrida – in which the topic of the dismembered body, on the one hand, and the motifs of the mask and of the disguise, or the character of the clown, on the other, acquire a particular aesthetic and symbolic resonance. We wish to evoke, paying special attention to the national artistic scenery at the turn of the century, with a particular emphasis on Aurélia de Souza’s self-portraits, a new paradigm of human representation which was especially eloquent in the making of a generation which Eduardo Lourenço would come to describe as “suicidal modernity”.
