Hydrocarbon spills on roads are a major safety concern for the driving public and can have severe cost impacts both on pavement maintenance and to the economy through disruption to services. The time taken to clean-up spills and re-open roads in a safe driving condition is an issue of increasing concern given traffic levels on major urban arterials. Thus, the primary aim of the research was to develop a sorbent material that facilitates rapid clean-up of road spills. The methodology involved extensive research into a range of materials (organic, inorganic and synthetic sorbents), comprehensive testing in the laboratory, scale-up and field, and product design (i.e. concept to prototype). The study also applied chemometrics to provide consistent, comparative methods of sorbent evaluation and performance. In addition, sorbent materials at every stage were compared against a commercial benchmark. For the first time, the impact of diesel on asphalt pavement has been quantified and assessed in a systematic way. Contrary to conventional thinking and anecdotal observations, the study determined that the action of diesel on asphalt was quite rapid (i.e. hours rather than weeks or months). This significant finding demonstrates the need to minimise the impact of hydrocarbon spills and the potential application of the sorbent option. To better understand the adsorption phenomenon, surface characterisation techniques were applied to selected sorbent materials (i.e. sand, organo-clay and cotton fibre). Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) and thermal analysis indicated that the main adsorption mechanism for the sorbents occurred on the external surface of the material in the diffusion region (sand and organo-clay) and/or capillaries (cotton fibre). Using environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), it was observed that adsorption by the interfibre capillaries contributed to the high uptake of hydrocarbons by the cotton fibre. Understanding the adsorption mechanism for these sorbents provided some guidance and scientific basis for the selection of materials. The study determined that non-woven cotton mats were ideal sorbent materials for clean-up of hydrocarbon spills. The prototype sorbent was found to perform significantly better than the commercial benchmark, displaying the following key properties: • superior hydrocarbon pick-up from the road pavement; • high hydrocarbon retention capacity under an applied load; • adequate field skid resistance post treatment; • functional and easy to use in the field (e.g. routine handling, transportation, application and recovery); • relatively inexpensive to produce due to the use of raw cotton fibre and simple production process; • environmentally friendly (e.g. renewable materials, non-toxic to environment and operators, and biodegradable); and • rapid response time (e.g. two minutes total clean-up time compared with thirty minutes for reference sorbents). The major outcomes of the research project include: a) development of a specifically designed sorbent material suitable for cleaning up hydrocarbon spills on roads; b) submission of patent application (serial number AU2005905850) for the prototype product; and c) preparation of Commercialisation Strategy to advance the sorbent product to the next phase (i.e. R&D to product commercialisation).

Microstructural (fabric, forces and composition) changes due to hydrocarbon contamination in a clay soil were studied using Scanning Electron Microscope (micro-fabric analysis), Atomic Force Microscope (forces measurement) and sedimentation bench test (particle size measurements). The non-polluted and polluted glacial till from north-eastern Poland (area of a fuel terminal) were used for the study. Electrostatic repelling forces for the polluted sample were much lower than for the non-polluted sample. In comparison to non-polluted sample, the polluted sample exhibited lower electric charge, attractive forces on approach and strong adhesion on retrieve. The results of the sedimentation tests indicate that clay particles form larger aggregates and settle out of the suspension rapidly in diesel oil. In non-polluted soil, the fabric is strongly aggregated – densely packed, dominate the face-to-face and edge-to-edge types of contacts, clay film tightly adheres to the surface of larger grains and interparticle pores are more common. In polluted soil, the clay matrix is less aggregated – loosely packed, dominate the edge-to-face types of contacts and inter-micro-aggregate pores are more frequent. Substantial differences were observed in the morphometric and geometrical parameters of pore space. The polluted soil micro-fabric proved to be more isotropic and less oriented than in non-polluted soil. The polluted soil, in which electrostatic forces were suppressed by hydrocarbon interaction, displays more open porosity and larger voids than non-polluted soil, which is characterized by occurrence of the strong electrostatic interaction between clay particles.

An Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope (ESEM) has been used to investigate the freshwater sensitivity of secondary corrensite (regularly interstratified chlorite/smectite) and chlorite-rich chlorite/smectite in order to determine whether hydrocarbon reservoirs hosting these clays should be regarded as freshwater sensitive. ESEM experiments involved an examination and close comparison of selected clay areas in three samples at high magnification before, during and after prolonged freshwater treatments. Corrensite and chlorine/smectite in the samples did not visibly swell when immersed in fresh water. After soaking in fresh water for up to three months, these clays retained their original morphology and associated porosity. Hence, the presence of corrensite or chlorite/smectite in a hydrocarbon reservoir need not indicate that the reservoir is freshwater sensitive. © 1994.

The environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) has been used to image liquid hydrocarbons in sandstones and oil shales. Additionally, the fluid sensitivity of selected clay minerals in hydrocarbon reservoirs was assessed via three case studies: HCl acid sensitivity of authigenic chlorite in sandstone reservoirs, freshwater sensitivity of authigenic illite/smectite in sandstone reservoirs, and bleach sensitivity of a volcanic reservoir containing abundant secondary chlorite/corrensite. The results showed the suitability of using ESEM for imaging liquid hydrocarbon films in hydrocarbon reservoirs and the importance of simulating in situ fluid-rock interactions for hydrocarbon production programmes. In each case, results of the ESEM studies greatly enhanced prediction of reservoir/borehole reactions and, in some cases, contradicted conventional wisdom regarding the outcome of potential engineering solutions. Pt/anodized TiO2/SiC based metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) devices were fabricated and characterized for their sensitivity towards propene (C3H6). Titanium (Ti) thin films were deposited onto the SiC substrates using a filtered cathodic vacuum arc (FCVA) method. Fluoride ions containing neutral electrolyte (0.5 wt% NH4F in ethylene glycol)were used to anodize the Ti films. The anodized films were subsequently annealed at 600 °C for 4 hrs in an oxygen rich environment to obtain TiO2. The current-voltage(I-V) characteristics of the Pt/TiO2/SiC devices were measured in different concentrations of propene. Exposure to the analyte gas caused a change in the Schottky barrier height and hence a lateral shift in the I-V characteristics. The effective change in the barrier height for 1% propene was calculated as 32.8 meV at 620°C. The dynamic response of the sensors was also investigated and a voltage shift of 157 mV was measured at 620°C during exposure to 1% propene.

The impact induced chemisorption of hydrocarbon molecules (CH3 and CH2) on H-terminated diamond (001)-(2x1) surface was investigated by molecular dynamics simulation using the many-body Brenner potential. The deposition dynamics of the CH3 radical at impact energies of 0.1-50 eV per molecule was studied and the energy threshold for chemisorption was calculated. The impact-induced decomposition of hydrogen atoms and the dimer opening mechanism on the surface was investigated. Furthermore, the probability for dimer opening event induced by chemisorption of CH, was simulated by randomly varying the impact position as well as the orientation of the molecule relative to the surface. Finally, the energetic hydrocarbons were modeled, slowing down one after the other to simulate the initial fabrication of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films. The structure characteristic in synthesized films with different hydrogen flux was studied. Our results indicate that CH3, CH2 and H are highly reactive and important species in diamond growth. Especially, the fraction of C-atoms in the film having sp(3) hybridization will be enhanced in the presence of H atoms, which is in good agreement with experimental observations. A newly developed middle-frequency (2 MHz) inductively coupled plasma (ICP) source with internal oscillating current is used to treat biodegradable food packaging surfaces. Initially hydrophilic packaging turns to hydrophobic after being processed by ICP plasma. The investigation of optical emission from hydrocarbon radicals in the Ar/ CH4 plasma helps us to understand the property of the hydrophobicity of the surfaces. © 2008 IEEE.

Different aspects of the plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of various carbon nanostructures in the ionized gas phase of high-density, low-temperature reactive plasmas of Ar+H2+CH4 gas mixtures are studied. The growth techniques, surface morphologies, densities and fluxes of major reactive species in the discharge, and effects of the transport of the plasma-grown nanoparticles through the near-substrate plasma sheath are examined. Possible growth precursors of the carbon nanostructures are also discussed. In particular, the experimental and numerical results indicate that it is likely that the aligned carbon nanotip structures are predominantly grown by the molecular and radical units, whereas the plasma-grown nanoparticles are crucial components of polymorphous carbon films.

Traffic is one of the prominent sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and road surfaces are the most critical platform for stormwater pollution. Build-up of pollutants on road surfaces was the focus of this research study. The study found that PAHs build-up on road surfaces primarily originate from traffic activities, specifically gasoline powered vehicles. Other sources such as diesel vehicles, industrial oil combustion and incineration were also found to contribute to the PAH build-up. Additionally, the study explored the linkages between concentrations of PAHs and traffic characteristics such as traffic volume, vehicle mix and traffic flow. While traffic congestion was found to be positively correlated with 6- ring and 5- ring PAHs in road build-up, it was negatively correlated with 3-ring and 4 ring PAHs. The absence of positive correlation between 3-ring and 4-ring PAHs and traffic parameters is attributed to the propensity of these relatively volatile PAHs to undergo re-suspension and evaporation. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute effective transport and land use planning for the prevention of PAH pollution in the urban environment.

Elucidating the nature of genetic variation underlying both sexually selected traits and the fitness components of sexual selection is essential to understanding the broader consequences of sexual selection as an evolutionary process. To date, there have been relatively few attempts to connect the genetic variance in sexually selected traits with segregating DNA sequence polymorphisms. We set out to address this in a well-characterized sexual selection system - the cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) of Drosophila serrata - using an indirect association study design that allowed simultaneous estimation of the genetic variance in CHCs, sexual fitness and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) effects in an outbred population. We cloned and sequenced an ortholog of the D. melanogaster desaturase 2 gene, previously shown to affect CHC biosynthesis in D. melanogaster, and associated 36 SNPs with minor allele frequencies > 0.02 with variance in CHCs and sexual fitness. Three SNPs had significant multivariate associations with CHC phenotype (q-value < 0.05). At these loci, minor alleles had multivariate effects on CHCs that were weakly associated with the multivariate direction of sexual selection operating on these traits. Two of these SNPs had pleiotropic associations with male mating success, suggesting these variants may underlie responses to sexual selection due to this locus. There were 15 significant male mating success associations (q-value < 0.1), and interestingly, we detected a nonrandom pattern in the relationship between allele frequency and direction of effect on male mating success. The minor-frequency allele usually reduced male mating success, suggesting a positive association between male mating success and total fitness at this locus.

Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and ultra-small angle neutron scattering (USANS) with contrast matching techniques (Melnichenko and others, 2012) were used to investigate size distribution and gas accessibility in pores in an approximately 10.6 cm long Mississippian Barnett Shale butt core from the Fort Worth Basin, Texas, USA. SANS and USANS measurements record scattering from all pores, both open and closed, in the size range 10nm - ~10 μ. The techniques can also be used to determine the material that contains pores and the number of pores as a function of size. By injecting deuterated methane gas (CD4) at contrast matching pressure it is possible to distinguish which pores are accessible, or open, to fluids and which ones are not.

Both short-range and long-range intermolecular interaction energies between two aromatic hydrocarbon molecules, both in their ground state, separated by a range of interplanar distances of 3 ∼ 4 Aring, are estimated using the standard perturbation theory. The results show that aromatic hydrocarbons can form weak sandwich dimers with larger separation between them than is normally believed in their excimers. The non-sandwich form of dimer in which the long in-plane axes of the monomers are parallel and their short in-plane axes inclined, represents an unstable orientation because this form can pass to the perfect sandwich form without an energy barrier.

Single pulse shock tube facility has been developed in the High Temperature Chemical Kinetics Lab, Aerospace Engineering Department, to carry out ignition delay studies and spectroscopic investigations of hydrocarbon fuels. Our main emphasis is on measuring ignition delay through pressure rise and by monitoring CH emission for various jet fuels and finding suitable additives for reducing the delay. Initially the shock tube was tested and calibrated by measuring the ignition delay of C2H6-O2 mixture. The results are in good agreement with earlier published works. Ignition times of exo-tetrahdyrodicyclopentadiene (C10H16), which is a leading candidate fuel for scramjet propulsion has been studied in the reflected shock region in the temperature range 1250 - 1750 K with and without adding Triethylamine (TEA). Addition of TEA results in substantial reduction of ignition delay of C10H16.
