There are good possibilities for expanding the consumer sector in both the traditional and nontraditional marine products. Frozen shrimp continues to be the item of highest demand in foreign markets. Individual quick frozen (IQF) prawns which are indeed value added products and have already penetrated international markets elicit export incentive from development agencies like the Marine Products Export Development Authority. With the projected potential of 1.8 lakh tonnes of cephalopods against the current yield of 13,000 tonnes, there are good prospects of increasing exports of frozen squid and cuttlefish. The technology of packing fish in retortable pouches as an alternative to canning has now been perfected. Salted fish mince has good market potential in India and abroad.

Oreochromis esculenta, the original "ngege" is virtually extinct in Lake Victoria, and is limited to satellite lakes and reservoirs in the greater Lake Victoria region. Oreochromis variabilis can still be found in Lake Victoria and some satellite lakes in the Kyoga System, but in small numbers and only at a few localities (WANDERA and KAUFMAN, unpub. data). Little is known about the influence that species translocations have had on the genetic structure of these crucial fishery species, and even the source of the parent stocks for the introductions remain obscure. Genetic variability was examined within and among allopatric populations of three species in the tilapiine genus Oreochromis: O. esculentus (endemic to Lakes Victoria and Kyoga), and two exotic species introduced to Lake Victoria in the late 1950's to supplement the failing fisheries for native tilapiines, O. niloticus and O. leucostictus.

Cubic boron nitride (c-BN) attracts widespread interest as a promising material for many potential applications because of its unique physical and chemical properties. Since the 1980's the research in c-BN thin films has been carried out, which reached its summit in the mid of 1990's, then turned into a downward period. In the past few years, however, important progress was achieved in synthesis and properties of cubic boron nitride films, such as obtaining > 1 mu m thick c-BN films, epitaxial growth of single crystalline c-BN films, and advances in mechanics properties and microstructures of the interlayer of c-BN films. The present article reviews the current status of the synthesis and properties of c-BN thin films.

A kind of simple atomic force microscopy (AFM) relocated technique, which takes advantage of homemade sample locator system, is used for investigating repeatedly imaging of some specific species on the whole substrate (over 1 x 1 cm(2)) with resolution about 400 nm. As applications of this sample locator system, single extended DNA molecules and plasmid DNA network are shown in different AFM operational modes: tapping mode and contact mode with different tips after the substrates have been moved.

Since the discovery of a series of Au-based catalysts by Haruta et al. considerable progress has been made in understanding the active role of Au in CO oxidation catalysis. This review provides a summary of recent theoretical work performed in this field; in particular it addresses DFT studies of CO oxidation catalysis over free and supported gold nanoparticles. Several properties of the Au particles have been found to contribute to their unique catalytic activity. Of these properties, the low-coordination state of the Au atoms is arguably the most pertinent, although other properties of the Au cluster atoms, such as electronic charge, cannot be ignored. The current consensuses regarding the mechanism for CO oxidation over Au-based catalysts is also discussed. Finally, water-enhanced catalysis of CO oxidation on Au clusters is summarized.
