Fifteen sediment samples were studied from five drill sites recovered by the Glomar Challenger on Legs I and IV in the Gulf of Mexico and western Atlantic. This study concentrated on compounds derived from biogenic precursors, namely: (1) hydrocarbons, (2) fatty acids, (3) pigments and (4) amino acids. Carbon isotope (dC13) data [values <(-26)?, relative to PDB], long-chain n-alkyl hydrocarbons (>>C27) with odd carbon numbered molecules dominating even carbon numbered species, and presence of perylene proved useful as possible indicators for terrigenous contributions to the organic matter in some samples. Apparently land-derived organic matter can be transported for distances over 1000 km into the ocean and their source still recognized. The study was primarily designed to investigate: (i) the sources of the organic matter present in the sediment, (ii) their stability with time of accumulation and (iii) the conditions necessary for in situ formation of new compounds.

The Turonian (93.5 to 89.3 million years ago) was one of the warmest periods of the Phanerozoic eon, with tropical sea surface temperatures over 35°C. High-amplitude sea-level changes and positive d18O excursions in marine limestones suggest that glaciation events may have punctuated this episode of extreme warmth. New d18O data from the tropical Atlantic show synchronous shifts ~91.2 million years ago for both the surface and deep ocean that are consistent with an approximately 200,000-year period of glaciation, with ice sheets of about half the size of the modern Antarctic ice cap. Even the prevailing supergreenhouse climate was not a barrier to the formation of large ice sheets, calling into question the common assumption that the poles were always ice-free during past periods of intense global warming.

The Eocene-Oligocene (E-O) boundary interval is considered to be one of the major transitions in Earth's climate, witnessing the first major expansion of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. However, the extent of the associated climatic cooling, especially for high northern latitude continental landmasses, is poorly constrained. In this study we reconstruct the first mean annual air temperature (MAAT) for the Greenland landmass during the late Eocene and early Oligocene by applying a new proxy based on the distribution of branched tetraether lipids derived from soil bacteria preserved in a marine sediment core from the Greenland Basin. The temperature estimates are compared with a composite continental temperature record based on bio-climatic analysis of pollen assemblages. Both proxies reveal comparable late Eocene MAATs of ~13-15 °C and a gradual long-term cooling of ~3-5 °C starting near the E-O boundary. These data are in agreement with other MAAT reconstructions from northern midlatitude continents and suggest a general cooling of the Northern Hemisphere during the E-O transition.

Sediments from Holes 994C, 995A, 997A, and 997B have been investigated for "combined" gases (adsorbed gas and that portion of free gas that has not escaped from the pore volume during core recovery and sample collection and storage), solvent-extractable organic compounds, and microscopically identifiable organic matter. The soluble materials mainly consist of polar compounds. The saturated hydrocarbons are dominated by n-alkanes with a pronounced odd-even predominance pattern that is derived from higher plant remains. Unsaturated triterpenoids and 17ß, 21ß-pentacyclic triterpenoids are characteristic for a low maturity stage of the organic matter. The low maturity is confirmed by vitrinite reflectance values of 0.3%. The proportion of terrestrial remains (vitrinite) increases with sub-bottom depth. Within the liptinite fraction, marine algae plays a major role in the sections below 180 mbsf, whereas above this depth sporinites and pollen from conifers are dominant. These facies changes are confirmed by the downhole variations of isoprenoid and triterpenoid ratios in the soluble organic matter. The combined gases contain methane, ethane, and propane, which is a mixture of microbial methane and thermal hydrocarbon gases. The variations in the gas ratios C1/(C2+C3) reflect the depth range of the hydrate stability zone. The carbon isotopic contents of ethane and propane indicate an origin from marine organic matter that is in the maturity stage of the oil window.

The aliphatic hydrocarbon distributions obtained from the natural bitumens of three Leg 75 sediments were compared using computerised gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (C-GC-MS). The kerogens isolated from these sediments were heated in sealed tubes at 330°C using the techniques of hydrous (i.e. heating kerogen in the presence of water) and anhydrous pyrolysis (i.e. heating dry kerogen alone). These experiments were then repeated at a lower temperature (280°C). At 330°C, under anhydrous conditions, considerable destruction of biomarkers in the ancient kerogens (i.e. pre-Tertiary) occurred, whereas with water present significant amounts of hopanes were obtained. However, with more recent kerogens (which contain larger amounts of chemically bound water), both anhydrous and hydrous pyrolysis gave a similar suite of biological markers, in which long chain acyclic isoprenoids (C40) are significant components. Lowering the temperature of pyrolysis to 280°C yielded biological markers under both hydrous and anhydrous conditions for all kerogens. n-Alkenes were not detected in any of the pyrolysates; however, a single unknown triterpene was discovered in several of the hydrous and anhydrous pyrolysates. The results tentatively indicate that the chief value to petroleum research of kerogen hydrous pyrolysis lies in its ability to increase the yield of pyrolysate. High temperature hydrous pyrolysis (280-330°C), under high pressure (2000 psi), does not appear to mimic natural conditions of oil generation. However, this study does not take into account whole rock pyrolysis.

Twenty-six core samples from Leg 64, Holes 474, 474A, 477, 478, 479, and 481A in the Gulf of California, were provided by the Joint Oceanographic Institutions for Deep Earth Sampling (JOIDES) Advisory Panel on Organic Geochemistry for analysis. The high heat flow characteristic of the basin provides an opportunity to study the effect of temperature on the diagenesis of organic matter. The contents and carbon isotope compositions of the organic matter and bitumen fractions of different polarity, isoprenoid and normal alkane distributions, and the nature of tetrapyrrole pigments were studied. Relative contents of hydrocarbons and bitumens depend on the thermal history of the deposits. Among other criteria, the nature and content of tetrapyrrole pigments appear to be most sensitive to thermal stress. Whereas only chlorins are present in the immature samples, porphyrins, including VO-porphyrins, appear in the thermally altered deposits, despite the shallow burial depth. Alkane distributions in thermally changed samples are characterized by low values of phytane to 2-C18 ratios and an odd/even carbon preference index close to unity. The thermally altered samples show unusual carbon isotope distributions of the bitumen fractions. The data also provide some evidence concerning the source of the organic matter and the degree of diagenesis.

Total organic carbon (TOC) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) concentrations were determined for 304 samples, and biomarkers were analyzed for 101 samples from Core 167-1016C-1H. TOC varies between 1% and 2%, and CaCO3 is typically 1%-4%, with peaks reaching 14%. Paleotemperature estimated from Uk'37 varies from 8.5° to 17.5°C. The Uk'37 variation implies that Core 167-1016C-1H covers oxygen isotope Stages 1-6. Peaks of diatom-derived C25:1 HBI alkene concentrations occur during warming intervals, suggesting intensified upwelling during deglaciation. The concentrations of haptophyte-derived alkenones and diatom-derived C25:1 HBI alkene vary out of phase, which presumably resulted from the changes in the mode of nutrient supply to surface mixed layer. Maximal CaCO3 contents (>10%) were observed in both warming and cooling intervals. The peak in cooling interval relates to an alkenone maximum, whereas the peaks in warming intervals do not. This implies that carbonate production is not the only factor controlling carbonate compensation depth at this site, and it suggests considering the changes in North Pacific deep-water chemistry. Petroleum-type compounds are present in Site 1016 sediments. Their concentrations are maximized in the warming intervals that correspond to the timing of destruction of a huge tar mound off Point Conception. The tarry material was presumably transported by the Arguello Fan system to Site 1016.

A series of 22 sediment samples of Cretaceous and Cenozoic age from DSDP Holes 603, 603B, and 603C at the continental rise off the northeastern American coast near Cape Hatteras was investigated by organic geochemical methods including organic carbon determination, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, gas chromatography and combined gas chromatography/mass spectrometry of extractable hydrocarbons, and kerogen microscopy. An abundance of terrigenous organic matter, including larger coal particles (almost exclusively consisting of huminite/vitrinite macerals), is the dominant characteristic of the organofacies types at Site 603. Marine organic matter, mostly structurally degraded and in the form of fecal pellets, was preserved in the Valanginian laminated marls and in Cenomanian black claystone turbidites. Long-chain nalkanes reflect the terrigenous imprint in the nonaromatic hydrocarbon fractions, whereas a second maximum at lower carbon numbers in most cases is caused by the presence of more mature recycled organic matter. Abundant isoprenoid and steroid hydrocarbons were found in sediments containing mainly marine organic matter, whereas hopanoids reflect the ubiquitous microbial activity. The organic matter in the Site 603 sediments, in so far as it is not recycled, is thermally immature.

Analysis of sediments deposited at different latitudes around the world during the Palaeocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 Ma) have revealed a globally profound warming phase, regionally varying from 5-8 °C. Such records from Europe have not yet been obtained. We studied the variations in sea surface and continental mean annual air temperatures (SST and MAT, respectively) and the distribution patterns and stable carbon isotopes of higher plant derived n-alkanes in two proximal PETM sections (Fur and Store Bælt, Denmark) from the epicontinental North Sea Basin. A negative carbon isotope excursion (CIE) of 4-7 per mil was recorded in land plant derived n-alkanes, similar to what has been observed for other PETM sections. However, differences observed between the two proximal sites suggest that local factors, such as regional vegetation and precipitation patterns, also influenced the CIE. The presence of S-bound isorenieratene derivatives at the onset of the PETM and increased organic carbon contents points to a rapid shift in depositional environment; from well oxygenated to anoxic and sulfidic. These euxinic conditions are comparable with those during the PETM in the Arctic Ocean. SSTs inferred from TEX86 show relatively low temperatures followed by an increase of ~7 °C across the PETM. At the Fur section, a remarkably similar temperature record was obtained for MAT using the MBT'/CBT proxy. However, the MAT record of the Store Bælt section did not reveal this warming.

Branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (brGDGTs) are membrane lipids produced by soil bacteria and occur in near coastal marine sediments as a result of soil organic matter input. Their abundance relative to marine-derived crenarchaeol, quantified in the BIT index, generally decreases offshore. However, in distal marine sediments, low relative amounts of brGDGTs can often still be observed. Sedimentary in situ production as well as dust input have been suggested as potential, though as yet not well constrained, sources. In this study brGDGT distributions in dust were examined and compared with those in distal marine sediments. Dust was sampled along the equatorial West African coast and brGDGTs were detected in most of the samples, albeit in low abundance. Their degree of methylation and cyclisation, expressed in the MBT' (methylation index of branched tetraethers) and DC (degree of cyclisation) indices, respectively, were comparable with those for African soils, their presumed source. Comparison of DC index values for brGDGTS in global soils, Congo deep-sea river fan sediments and dust with those of distal marine sediments clearly showed, however, that distal marine sediments had significantly higher values. This distinctive distribution is suggestive of sedimentary in situ production as a source of brGDGTs in marine sediments, rather than dust input. The presence of in situ produced brGDGTs in marine sediments means that caution should be exercised when applying the MBT'-CBT palaeothermometer to sediments with low BIT index values, i.e. < 0.1, based on our dataset.

Two types of intact branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) were detected in peat bog samples from Bullenmoor, Northern Germany. Glucuronosyl and glucosyl branched GDGTs comprise on average ca. 4% of the microbial intact polar lipids in the anoxic, acidic peat layer ca. 20 cm below the surface of the bog, suggesting an important ecological role for the source microorganisms. No corresponding phospholipids were detected. Notably, glycosidic branched GDGTs are 5-10 times less abundant than their intact isoprenoid counterparts derived from Archaea, while branched GDGT core lipids exceed their isoprenoid analogues by about an order of magnitude. These contrasting relationships may reflect lower standing stocks of the biomass of producers of branched GDGTs, combined with higher population growth rates relative to soil Archaea. Search strategies for the microbial producers of these conspicuous orphan lipids should benefit from the discovery of their intact polar precursors.
