Korean 'Chung-soh' and Australian contemporary dance

This project investigated a characteristic concept of Korean culture, "Chung-soh", to develop an understanding a 'Korean-ness' in dance and of how "Chung-soh" informs cross-cultural dance processes involving Korean and Australian artists. At the same time the author developed her artistic identity through investigating and understanding her dance practice. The DVDs contain 2 works choreographed by the author: Cross sections and Embryo.

English teachers' shaping of students' democratic attitudes in Taiwan

This study has several findings. English language teachers' multiple identities and 'guided democracy' educate students to be autonomous and tolerant of different cultures. A global curriculum enables students to negotiate 'Eastern' and 'Western' cultures. Communicative pedagogies have contributed to both solutions and problems. An integrated pedagogy is essential.

Narrative analysis of female student 'resistance' in a Japanese private university

The thesis points to the emergence of a series of distinctive tensions which were informed by the author's position as a Western male researcher living in Japan, and the changing perceptions of what occured as notions of 'empowerment' and 'voice' touched the 'grounded' data. It argues that the generative narrative(s) constitutes a form of ongoing 'conversation' which succeed in producing an unstructured reading or pedagogy. Although the research does not achieve tangible liberatory outcomes, the generative narrative(s) provides the lens through which to view the student 'resistance' and, as such, permits the examination of an instance of student 'resistance' in Japan.

Teaching Thai language and culture abroad

Drawing on some principles of action research a systematic curriculum was developed for the Buddhapadipa temple school in London. Data was collected using interview-conversations, reflective episodes, classroom observations. The research was supported by four smaller studies investigating specific aspects of curriculum, language, culture and national identity.

Investigation into the appropriacy of Western language teaching methods in Taiwan

The language learning preferences of EFL students are often assumed and not readily understood by foreign teachers. This study sought to determine the types of language learning classroom activities preferred by adult learners of English in Taiwan. Student responses were then compared with responses from native-speaking teachers of EFL.

Woman principal : what's being feminist got to do with it?

This investigation of the experience and standpoint of women principals of Catholic schools revealed that dominant masculinist views of educational administration are neither popular, nor go unchallenged. It revealed that the unique achievements of women educators are largely ignored in a culture that still dismisses women's values and commitments.

Professional development for school administrators : computer applications in data communication

This action research project set out to develop the competence of senior personnal from a private vocational college in Thailand in the use of administrative computer systems. The findings demonstrate the critical significance of progressive incremental learning that is tailored to the professional personal needs of learners. Learner competence was found to be dependent upon the creation of an environment promoting learner confidence.

Developing multimedia materials : a professional development initiative at Rangsit University

This study consisted of four professional development investigations and a dissertation on professional development for academic staff at Rangsit University in Thailand. The dissertation includes professional development activities on the design and production of a CDROM. The research utilised some of the principles of action research.

Learning to deal with change in the workplace

Examines how people in four separate workplace communities learnt to deal with change in the workplace. Explores the influences that affect how people learn to handle change and what can be done to improve the way workers learn to cope with change.

Doing things differently? : technological practice and change in higher education

Explores changes brought about by new technologies. "Technology" is seen to influence, reorder and restructure social and political relations and practices of staff. The study is intended to increase awareness of changing work practices and to encourage an informed and critical view of new technology adoption in education.

Subculture : reassessing the meanings of style ; a theoretical base for the study of subcultures in the 21st century

Re-examines the body of subcultural theory originally set in place by Birmingham University's Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies in the 1970s. This was achieved through extensive ethnographic interviewing, and through utilisation of postmodern theoretical perspectives including pastiche (a kind of eclecticism) and hyperreality. The thesis emphasises the importance of grounding theory in practice.

'no through road'? Disadvantage in rural education

Investigates educational disadvantage for students completing their secondary education in rural schools. For these students rural location has contributed reduced exposure to a broad range of literacy practices, and involvement in student cohorts with lower levels of socio-economic status, less extensive cultural knowledge and lower post-school aspirations.

Boom and bust in the Latrobe Valley

This thesis argues for the needs of the individual rather than a nationally imposed curriculum that does not take into account the needs of local communities suffering economic dislocation. Educational and socio-economic change are parallel narratives throughout the thesis.

Teaching educational administration in Thailand : a participatory approach

A participatory approach was used to teach educational administration topics relevant to the Thai reform agenda. Students were also required to carry out a workplace project based on their studies. Data indicated that the content and pedagogy of the university course were an effective form of professional development for school administrators.
