Practical Proposals for Specifying k-Nearest Neighbours Weights Matrices

In this article we introduce and evaluate testing procedures for specifying the number k of nearest neighbours in the weights matrix of spatial econometric models. The spatial J-test is used for specification search. Two testing procedures are suggested: an increasing neighbours testing procedure and a decreasing neighbours testing procedure. Simulations show that the increasing neighbours testing procedures can be used in large samples to determine k. The decreasing neighbours testing procedure is found to have low power, and is not recommended for use in practice. An empirical example involving house price data is provided to show how to use the testing procedures with real data.

Mean square displacements of hydrogen interstitial and its neighbours in the intermetallic compound Fe0.5Ti0.5

A Green's function technique is used in the scattering matrix formalism to compute the mean square displacement of hydrogen and deuterium interstitials in the intermetallic compound Fe0.5Ti0.5 for low hydrogen/deuterium concentration. The mean square amplitudes of the metal atoms surrounding the interstitial are found to be smaller than those for the host crystal. This anomalous effect is due to the stiffening of the lattice by the dissolved hydrogen or deuterium at low concentration. This type of effect is experimentally observed in the case of NbHx at low hydrogen concentration.

Ihmisoikeusperusteista ulkopolitiikkaa : kansalaisjärjestöjen vaikutus Suomen suhtautumiseen Etelä-Afrikan järjestelmälliseen rotuerotteluun vuosina 1985-1987.

Apartheid eli rotuerottelupolitiikka sai virallisen statuksen Etelä-Afrikassa vuonna 1948. Merkittävimpänä Etelä-Afrikan sisäisenä apartheidpolitiikkaa vastustavana järjestönä profiloitui African National Congress. ANC:n ja kommunistien yhteydet pitivät johtavat länsivallat ja Etelä-Afrikan tärkeimmät kauppakumppanit Yhdysvallat ja Iso-Britannian puuttumatta maan sisäisiin asioihin. 1960-luvulla ANC:n toiminta meni maan alle ja kansainvälinen antiapartheidliikehdintä sai paljon nostetta.Suomessa Etelä-Afrikan apartheidpolitiikan vastustus tuli osaksi 60-luvun vasemmistopainotteisten opiskelijaliikkeiden retoriikkaa, mutta 1980-luvulle tultaessa antiapartheid-liikkeen suomalainen haara koostui sekä vasemmistolaisista että oikeistolaisista jäsenistä. Myös kirkon merkittävä rooli tässä ulkopoliittisessa kysymyksessä on merkittävä. Tutkin kansalaisjärjestöjen vaikutusmahdollisuuksia ulkopolitiikkaan ja yleensäkin Suomen ulkopolitiikassa tapahtunutta murrosta realismista ihmisoikeudelliseen lähestymistapaan. Olen tullut johtopäätökseen, että tarkastelemani ajanjakson maailmanpoliittinen tilanne ei vaikuttanut totutun lailla Suomen ulkopoliittiseen päätöksentekoon: käsitteenä suomettumattomuus kuvaa tilannetta hyvin. Apartheidkysymys ei ollut taloudellisesti merkittävä, sillä kauppa Suomen ja Etelä-Afrikan välillä oli todella pientä. Aikanaan sitä kuitenkin käytettiin perusteluna suhteiden jatkamiselle ja tutkijalle tulikin käsitys, että pelaajina tässä olivat lähinnä antiapartheid-liike, kirkko sekä ay-liike yhtenä rintamana elinkeinoelämää vastaan. Elinkeinoelämän edustajana tässä nähtiin reaalipolitiikkaan tukeutunut ulkoministeriö. Suomen ihmisoikeuspolitiikka oli näkymätöntä verrattuna muihin Pohjoismaihin ja se kulki lähes aina YK:n kautta universaalisuusperiaatteeseen ja puolueettomuuspolitiikkaan vedoten. Monenkeskisessä maailmassa poliittinen mahdollisuusrakenne muuttui ja kolmannen sektorin toimijat saivat ulkopoliittista painoarvoa. Suomi kielsi Etelä-Afrikan kaupan vuonna 1987 kansalaisyhteiskunnasta kaikuneiden vaatimusten takia. Suurimpina toimijoina olivat Auto- ja Kuljetusalan Työntekijäliitto AKT, Eristetään Etelä-Afrikka kampanja EELAK ja Suomen luterilainen kirkko. AKT:n tavarankuljetusboikotti 1985 oli merkittävin konkreettinen toimenpide, jolla hallitusta painostettiin lopettamaan Etelä-Afrikan kauppa. Kyseessä oli ensimmäinen kerta, kun kansalaisjärjestöillä oli merkittävää vaikutusta Suomen ulkopolitiikkaan ja ainoa kerta, kun Suomi on asettanut jonkun maan talousboikottiin ilman YK:n turvallisuusneuvoston yksimielistä päätöstä. Tutkimus koostuu kansalaisjärjestöaktiivien haastatteluista ja aikaisemman tutkimuskirjallisuuden sekä viranomaislähteiden analyysistä. Ihmisoikeuksien ja yleisen mielipiteen vaikutus ulkopolitiikan hoitoon kylmän sodan liennytysvaiheessa tulee ilmi myös kansainvälisten suhteiden turbulenssi-teoriaa soveltamalla. Suomalainen kehitys antiapartheidliikehdinnässä kulki Pohjoismaiden perässä.

Jouko Turkan Teatterikorkeakoulun kauden yhteiskunnallinen kontekstuaalisuus vuosina 1982 - 1985

The subject of my doctoral thesis is the social contextuality of Finnish theater director, Jouko Turkka's (b. 1942) educational tenure in the Theater Academy of Finland 1982 1985. Jouko Turkka announced in the opening speech of his rectorship in 1982 that Finnish society had undergone a social shift into a new cultural age, and that actors needed new facilities like capacity, flexibility, and ability for renewal in their work. My sociological research reveals that Turkka adapted cultural practices and norms of new capitalism and new liberalism, and built a performance environment for actors' educational work, a real life simulation of a new capitalist workplace. Actors educational praxis became a cultural performance, a media spectacle. Turkka's tenure became the most commented upon and discussed era in Finnish postwar theater history. The sociological method of my thesis is to compare information of sociological research literature about new capitalist work, and Turkka's educational theater work. In regard to the conceptions of legitimation, time, dynamics, knowledge, and social narrative consubstantial changes occurred simultaneously in both contexts of workplace. I adapt systems and chaos theory's concepts and modules when researching how a theatrical performance self-organizes in a complex social space and the space of Information. Ilya Prigogine's chaos theoretic concept, fluctuation, is the central social and aesthetic concept of my thesis. The chaos theoretic conception of the world was reflected in actors' pedagogy and organizational renewals: the state of far from equilibrium was the prerequisite of creativity and progress. I interpret the social and theater's aesthetical fluctuations as the cultural metaphor of new capitalism. I define the wide cultural feedback created by Turkka's tenure of educational praxis, and ideas adapted from the social context into theater education, as an autopoietic communicative process between theater education and society: as a black box, theater converted the virtual conception of the world into a concrete form of an actor's psychophysical praxis. Theater educational praxis performed socially contextual meanings referring to a subject's position in the social change of 1980s Finland. My other theoretic framework lies close to the American performance theory, with its close ties to the social sciences, and to the tradition of rhetoric and communication: theater's rhetorical utility materializes quotidian cultural practices in a theatrical performance, and helps the audience to research social situations and cultural praxis by mirroring them and creating an explanatory frame.
