Immigration is a prominent and contested global topic of contemporary politics. Several recent popular votes targeting migration such as the minaret initiative, the automatic deportation initiative, and most recently the vote on “mass immigration”, evoke however the impression that Switzerland sets particularly harsh standards in migration policy. Based on historical evidence on Swiss migration policy making and comparative analyses on current cantonal integration policy outputs, I argue that - while far from being a new phenomenon - immigrant scepticism has become a more relevant factor of Swiss migration policy making than ever. Yet, immigration and immigrant scepticism do not only challenge direct democratic Switzerland, but all destination countries of immigration.

The following paper considers Joseph Conrad’s standing vis-à-vis the Germans as well as the reception of his works in the German-speaking area. The analysis focuses on the German policies of publication and the nature of germanophone reviews, research interests, and translation practices – accounting for relevant socio- and cultural-historical contexts. The study attempts to demonstrate the exemplary quality featured by the German appropriation of Conrad’s canonical short novel Heart of Darkness.

PURPOSE To reliably determine the amplitude of the transmit radiofrequency ( B1+) field in moving organs like the liver and heart, where most current techniques are usually not feasible. METHODS B1+ field measurement based on the Bloch-Siegert shift induced by a pair of Fermi pulses in a double-triggered modified Point RESolved Spectroscopy (PRESS) sequence with motion-compensated crusher gradients has been developed. Performance of the sequence was tested in moving phantoms and in muscle, liver, and heart of six healthy volunteers each, using different arrangements of transmit/receive coils. RESULTS B1+ determination in a moving phantom was almost independent of type and amplitude of the motion and agreed well with theory. In vivo, repeated measurements led to very small coefficients of variance (CV) if the amplitude of the Fermi pulse was chosen above an appropriate level (CV in muscle 0.6%, liver 1.6%, heart 2.3% with moderate amplitude of the Fermi pulses and 1.2% with stronger Fermi pulses). CONCLUSION The proposed sequence shows a very robust determination of B1+ in a single voxel even under challenging conditions (transmission with a surface coil or measurements in the heart without breath-hold). We previously reported that excess of deoxycorticosterone-acetate (DOCA)/salt-induced cardiac hypertrophy in the absence of hypertension in one-renin gene mice. This model allows us to study molecular mechanisms of high-salt intake in the development of cardiovascular remodeling, independently of blood pressure in a high mineralocorticoid state. In this study, we compared the effect of 5-wk low- and high-salt intake on cardiovascular remodeling and cardiac differential gene expression in mice receiving the same amount of DOCA. Differential gene and protein expression was measured by high-density cDNA microarray assays, real-time PCR and Western blot analysis in DOCA-high salt (HS) vs. DOCA-low salt (LS) mice. DOCA-HS mice developed cardiac hypertrophy, coronary perivascular fibrosis, and left ventricular dysfunction. Differential gene and protein expression demonstrated that high-salt intake upregulated a subset of genes encoding for proteins involved in inflammation and extracellular matrix remodeling (e.g., Col3a1, Col1a2, Hmox1, and Lcn2). A major subset of downregulated genes encoded for transcription factors, including myeloid differentiation primary response (MyD) genes. Our data provide some evidence that vascular remodeling, fibrosis, and inflammation are important consequences of a high-salt intake in DOCA mice. Our study suggests that among the different pathogenic factors of cardiac and vascular remodeling, such as hypertension and mineralocorticoid excess and sodium intake, the latter is critical for the development of the profibrotic and proinflammatory phenotype observed in the heart of normotensive DOCA-treated mice.

In eukaryotes, small RNAs (sRNAs) have key roles in development, gene expression regulation, and genome integrity maintenance. In ciliates, such as Paramecium, sRNAs form the heart of an epigenetic system that has evolved from core eukaryotic gene silencing components to selectively target DNA for deletion. In Paramecium, somatic genome development from the germline genome accurately eliminates the bulk of typically gene-interrupting, noncoding DNA. We have discovered an sRNA class (internal eliminated sequence [IES] sRNAs [iesRNAs]), arising later during Paramecium development, which originates from and precisely delineates germline DNA (IESs) and complements the initial sRNAs ("scan" RNAs [scnRNAs]) in targeting DNA for elimination. We show that whole-genome duplications have facilitated successive differentiations of Paramecium Dicer-like proteins, leading to cooperation between Dcl2 and Dcl3 to produce scnRNAs and to the production of iesRNAs by Dcl5. These innovations highlight the ability of sRNA systems to acquire capabilities, including those in genome development and integrity.

This article theorises the territorial solidarity and fiscal federalism and compares Switzerland with the European Union. While inter-territorial solidarity is a prerequisite for legitimate fiscal equalisation, such equalisation in turn also contributes to the legitimacy of and solidarity within federal political systems. By cutting across territorial and ethno-national communities, fiscal transfers often contribute to both a “civic” sense of belonging and a “cosmopolitan” identity. After placing types and degrees of (inter-)territorial solidarity at the heart of our conceptual perspective, we discuss the effects of such solidarity through an analysis of two different forms of “federal” equalisation. Comparing the recently reformed Swiss fiscal equalisation system with the EU structural funds allows us to infer if, and how, the fiscal dimension of federalism matters for feelings of solidarity, reciprocity, unity and, ultimately, for the legitimacy of the very (nation-state or Union) structures that are to contribute to the ever-growing prosperity and happiness of their people(s). In Switzerland, a civic understanding of nationhood and cross-cutting cleavages were necessary conditions for extensive, effective and legitimate fiscal equalisation. We infer that, for the EU, this means that strengthening the equalisation component of the structural funds would contribute to an ever closer Union in a political sense: because fiscal equalisation and inter-territorial solidarity are interdependent, reinforcing the one also means cementing the other. Future studies of the EU and federal-type arrangements are advised to pay more explicit attention to the solidarity-element of territoriality – or the territoriality of (fiscal) solidarity.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary pacemakers (PMs) are powered by primary batteries with a limited energy-storing capacity. PM replacements because of battery depletion are common and unpleasant and bear the risk of complications. Batteryless PMs that harvest energy inside the body may overcome these limitations. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to develop a batteryless PM powered by a solar module that converts transcutaneous light into electrical energy. METHODS: Ex vivo measurements were performed with solar modules placed under pig skin flaps exposed to different irradiation scenarios (direct sunlight, shade outdoors, and indoors). Subsequently, 2 sunlight-powered PMs featuring a 4.6-cm2 solar module were implanted in vivo in a pig. One prototype, equipped with an energy buffer, was run in darkness for several weeks to simulate a worst-case scenario. RESULTS: Ex vivo, median output power of the solar module was 1963 μW/cm2 (interquartile range [IQR] 1940-2107 μW/cm2) under direct sunlight exposure outdoors, 206 μW/cm2 (IQR 194-233 μW/cm2) in shade outdoors, and 4 μW/cm2 (IQR 3.6-4.3 μW/cm2) indoors (current PMs use approximately 10-20 μW). Median skin flap thickness was 4.8 mm. In vivo, prolonged SOO pacing was performed even with short irradiation periods. Our PM was able to pace continuously at a rate of 125 bpm (3.7 V at 0.6 ms) for 1½ months in darkness. CONCLUSION: Tomorrow's PMs might be batteryless and powered by sunlight. Because of the good skin penetrance of infrared light, a significant amount of energy can be harvested by a subcutaneous solar module even indoors. The use of an energy buffer allows periods of darkness to be overcome.

Ancient lakes are often unusually species rich, mostly as a result of radiation and species-flock formation having taken place in only one or a few of many taxa present. Understanding why some taxa radiate and others do not is at the heart of understanding biodiversity. In this chapter I discuss possible explanations for disproportionally large species numbers in some cichlid fish lineages in East African Great Lakes: the halochromine cichlid fishes in Lakes Victoria and Malawi. I show that speciation rates in this group are higher than in any other lacustrine fish radiation. Against this background, I review hypotheses put forward to explain diversity in cichlid species flocks. The evolution of species diversity requires three processes: speciation, ecological radiation and anatomical diversification, and it is wrong to consider hypotheses that are relevant to different processes as alternatives to each other. The African cichlid species flocks show unusually high ecological species packing in several phylogenetic groups and unusually high speciation rates in haplochromines. Therefore, it maybe concluded that at least two evolutionary models are required to explain the difference between cichlid diversity and other fish diversity in East African Lakes: one for speciation in haplochromines and one for coexistence. Subsequently I review work on speciation in haplochromines, and in particular studies aimed at testing the hypothesis of speciation by sexual selection. Haplochromines have a polygynous mating system, conducive to sexual selection, but other polygynous cichlids are not particularly species rich. This suggests that more than just strong sexual selection is required to explain haplochromine species richness. Recent palaeoecological evidence undermines the previously popular hypotheses that explained the species richness of Lake Victoria in terms of speciation under varying natural or sexual selection regimes in satellite lakes or in isolated lake basins. I summarize experimental and comparative studies, which provide evidence for two mechanisms of sympatric speciation by disruptive sexual selection on polymorphic coloration. Such modes of speciation may explain (i) the high speciation rates in colour polymorphic lineages of haplochromine cichlids under conditions where colour variation is visible in clear water, and (ii) in combination with factors that affect population survival, the unusual species richness in haplochromine species flocks. I argue that sexual selection, if disruptive, can accelerate the pace of adaptive radiation because the resultant genetic population fragmentation allows a much increased rate of differential response to disruptive natural selection. Hence, the ecological pattern of diversity resembles that produced by disruptive natural selection, with the difference that disruptive sexual selection continues to cause (gross) speciation even after niche space is saturated. This may explain the unusually high numbers of very closely related and ecologically similar species in haplochromine species flocks. The role of disruptive sexual selection is twofold: it not only causes speciation, but also maintains reproductive isolation in sympatry between species that have evolved in sympatry or allopatry. Therefore, the maintenance of diversity in species flocks that originated through sexual selection depends on the persistence of the selection regime within the environmental signal space under which that diversity evolved.

Adenosine 5′-phosphosulphate reductase (APR) is considered to be a key enzyme of sulphate assimilation in higher plants. We analysed the diurnal fluctuations of total APR activity and protein accumulation together with the mRNA levels of three APR isoforms of Arabidopsis thaliana. The APR activity reached maximum values 4 h after light onset in both shoots and roots; the minimum activity was detected at the beginning of the night. During prolonged light, the activity remained stable and low in shoots, but followed the normal rhythm in roots. On the other hand, the activity decreased rapidly to undetectable levels within 24 h of prolonged darkness both in shoots and roots. Subsequent re-illumination restored the activity to 50% in shoots and to 20% in roots within 8 h. The mRNA levels of all three APR isoforms showed a diurnal rhythm, with a maximum at 2 h after light onset. The variation of APR2 mRNA was more prominent compared to APR1 and APR3. 35SO42– feeding experiments showed that the incorporation of 35S into reduced sulphur compounds in vivo was significantly higher in light than in the dark. A strong increase of mRNA and protein accumulation as well as enzyme activity during the last 4 h of the dark period was observed, implying that light was not the only factor involved in APR regulation. Indeed, addition of 0.5% sucrose to the nutrient solution after 38 h of darkness led to a sevenfold increase of root APR activity over 6 h. We therefore conclude that changes in sugar concentrations are also involved in APR regulation.

Cardiomyopathies are severe degenerative disorders of the myocardium that lead to heart failure. During the last three decades bovine dilated cardiomyopathy (BDCMP) was observed worldwide in cattle of Holstein-Friesian origin. In the Swiss cattle population BDCMP affects Fleckvieh and Red Holstein breeds. The heart of affected animals is enlarged due to dilation of both ventricles. Clinical signs are caused by systolic dysfunction and affected individuals die as a result of severe heart insufficiency. BDCMP follows an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance and the disease-causing locus was mapped to bovine chromosome 18 (BTA18). In the present study we describe the successful identification of the causative mutation in the OPA3 gene located on BTA18 that was previously reported to cause 3-methylglutaconic aciduria type III in Iraqi-Jewish patients. We demonstrated conclusive genetic and functional evidence that the nonsense mutation c.343C>T in the bovine OPA3 gene causes the late-onset dilated cardiomyopathy in Red Holstein cattle.

Kluwick breaks new ground in this book, moving away from Rushdie studies that focus on his status as postcolonial or postmodern, and instead considering the significance of magic realism in his fiction. Rushdie’s magic realism, in fact, lies at the heart of his engagement with the post/colonial. In a departure from conventional descriptions of magic realism—based primarily on the Latin-American tradition—Kluwick here proposes an alternative definition, allowing for a more accurate description of the form. She argues that it is disharmony, rather than harmony, that is decisive: that the incompatibility of the realist and the supernatural needs to be recognized as a driving force in Rushdie’s fiction. In its rigorous analysis of this Rushdian magic realism, this book considers the entire corpus—Midnight’s Children, Shame, The Satanic Verses, The Moor’s Last Sigh, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, Shalimar the Clown, and The Enchantress of Florence. This study is the first of its kind to do so.

This chapter examines how linguists have investigated the very obvious fact that different places house different dialects. We will not look at the results of such work nor how they have been used to answer linguistic and sociolinguistic questions (see Britain 2009, in press). Here we simply examine the steps dialectologists take and have taken to conduct multi-locality research on language variation. In order to do so, five studies from different time periods are presented and critiqued, examining a number of key methodological elements in each: 1. The aim of geographical dialectology is to examine variation across space, in different places. How do dialectologists then decide which places in that space to analyse? Why choose one village and not its neighbour? Why avoid that city? This question goes to the very heart of the geographical motivation of the research. 2. What sorts of speakers will be sampled from these locations? 3. What type of data is to be collected from these speakers? 4. In what circumstances is that data to be recorded? Who will collect it, in what setting and how will the voices of the speakers be captured for later analysis? As we will see, dialectological methodologies always involve compromises, no approach is ever flawless. Ultimately, a good number of difficult practical decisions have to be taken – how long can this research take, and what are the financial restrictions on the project? As we will see geographical dialectology is probably the most expensive and the most time consuming of all forms of language variation research.

Originally domesticated in Ethiopia, tef is a wholegrain cereal that has become a lifestyle food alternative in the West. Its appeal is due to its gluten free qualities and its light and soft texture which can easily be combined with other cuisines. Tef products including flour, bread, cookies and the flattened bread injera can be found in organic/health food stores in Europe and the USA or can be purchased online. It is estimated that there are more than 90 restaurants in Europe providing Ethiopian cuisine, at the heart of which is injera.
