Pregnancy toxemia is a multisystemic disease, which occurs mainly at the end of pregnancy, characterized by clinical manifestations such as hypertension, edema and proteinuria. It is the most commonly occurred medical complication in pregnancies and the main cause for perinatal and maternal morbimortalities. The purpose of this article is to review the main aspects concerning the use of antihypertensive agents during pregnancy and puerperium. The data has been collected from Pubmed and Bireme, from 2006 to 2010 using the words “anti-hipertensivo e gravidez” and “antihypertensive and pregnancy”. The knowledge regarding hypertension during pregnancy and its therapy is evolving; the search for medication that could protect the mother from acute dangers and to ensure a healthy newborn must be the focus. Evidence is still lacking regarding the best therapy, beginning period, duration and results. In spite of the pharmacological advances, there are still no drugs completely exempt of compromises to the mother and the conceptus.

Dicephalus dipus dibrachius twins are a rare form of conjoined twins. An autopsy of conjoined dicephalus twins is reported. The diagnosis was performed during the pregnancy and the family received a judicial authorization for termination of pregnancy. The preterm newborn progressed to cardiac arrest and died following a court order to terminate the pregnancy. The conceptus presented two arms, two legs, a trunk, two heads, and a single umbilical cord. The two spinal columns presented vertebral fusion in the sacral region. The heart exhibited complex malformations. The external genitalia were female; and cytogenetic analysis confirmed female sex (46, XX). This analysis also corroborated the etiopathogenic hypotheses described for this abnormality, which proposes failures in embryonic formation rather than specific chromosomal alterations. Current identification of cases by ultrasound permits medical management and multidisciplinary action with the family, enabling the legal termination of pregnancy.

Three newborn Mini-Horses and one Brazilian Pony horses were presented to the Veterinary Hospital with phenotypic appearance of dwarfism. They had relatively larger head conformation, occlusive dental defect and musculoskeletal changes such as abnormal short limbs and deformation on the third metatarsal bone. The radiographic examination showed abnormal growth plates on femoral condyle and proximal thirds metatarsal bones. Due to the high possibility of future complications and quality of life loss, the animals were euthanized. We emphasize the importance of recognition of phenotypic changes related to dwarfism in horses, enabling the phenotypic diagnosis can direct crossings for nontransmission of this abnormality as genetic inheritance.
