Student placement outcomes were examined using archival data from a field education program on the gender of both students and supervisors to test the hypothesis that gender is a predictor of placement outcome. The results of these analyses suggest that whilst the supervisor gender is not critical, the student gender is a significant predictor of placement outcome. As male students are more likely to encounter placement difficulties than female students, inquiry into the student’s concept of masculinity is proposed as a way to assist male students in field education.

This paper presents an efficient technique to design dynamic feedback control scheme for single-link flexible manipulators.  A linear model can be derived for the robotic system using the assumed-mode method.  Conventional techniques such as pole-placement or LQR require physical measurements of all systme states,  posing a stringent requirement for its implementation.  To overcome this problem, a low-order state functional observer is proposed here for reconstruction of the state feedback control action.  The observer design involves solving an optimisation problem with the objective to generate a feedback gain that is as close as possible to that of the required feedback controller.  A condition for robust stability of the closed-loop system under the observer-based control scheme is given.  The attractive features of the propsed technique are the resulted functional state observer is of a very low order and it requires only sensor measurements of only the output- the tip position of the arm.

There has been considerable emphasis over the last decade on effective teaching and learning in the middle years of schooling, associated with the particular responses to schooling of adolescent students in a period of their lives when issues of identity, commitment, and independence are central to their experience and concern. Extensive research and development has generated considerable reform in Years 5 to 9. Improved understandings of students' different learning styles and needs has led to more diverse and strategic selection of teaching methods. However, there is still considerable scope for improving the quality of contemporary approaches to the education and development of adolescents. A number of major research projects have been conducted by the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DE&T) middle years strategy team since 1998, including the Middle Years Research and Development (MYRAD) project, the Middle Years Literacy, and Middle Years Numeracy Research projects. Currently, the focus has shifted to a more explicit framing of a Middle Years pedagogical framework. The Middle Years Pedagogy Research and Development (MYPRAD) project has developed an explicit pedagogical framework that is grounded in research findings from previous projects and from the literature more generally.

Both native ss-lactoglobulin and its modified derivatives (Figure 1) exhibited antioxidant activity when assessed by the FRAP assay (which measures total reducing power of the sample). A positive correlation was observed between antioxidant activity and protein concentration in all samples. Compared to the native protein, the concentration dependence of the antioxidant activity was significantly greater when ss-lactoglobulin was modified with the Maillard reaction (p=0.000) and Enzyme hydrolysis (p=0.022)....

The right to vote permits the voices of the electorate to be heard in democracies. However, voting is often insufficient for minorities to obtain representation by their preferred candidates. For traditional political ‘minorities’ including women, self-representation is essential to political equality and social equity. Despite holding roughly 50% of the electoral vote in Australia for 100 years, women comprise only 22% of the Commonwealth Members and 29% of Senators. This paper proposes a new vote counting system, STV with Borda elimination or STV-B. STV-B retains proportional representation but much greater voter control over selection of candidates. STV-B would provide women with a mechanism that yields proportional representation for women without undermining party representation.
