Simple components of the center of FG/J(FG)

Let G be a finite group, F a field, FG the group ring of G over F, and J(FG) the Jacobson radical of FG. Using a result of Berman and Witt, we give a method to determine the structure of the center of FG/J(FG), provided that F satisfies a field theoretical condition.

Prevalence of hepatitis B and C serological markers among first-time blood donors in Brazil: A multi-center serosurvey

Little data are available on the seroprevalence of, and risk factors for hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV) infection in Latin American countries. A multi-center serosurvey was conducted among 3,598 first-time blood donors (65% men) from Sao Paulo, Salvador and Manaus in Brazil. The gender-specific seroprevalences of antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) and of the hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in anti-HBc-positive sera were measured, and risk factors analyzed by gender. The gender-specific seroprevalences of antibodies against HCV (anti-HCV) were measured, but risk factors for HCV were not determined. Anti-HBc and HBsAg seroprevalences were not significantly different in men [101/2,341 (4.31%) and 4/2,229 (0.18%), respectively] and women [65/1,237 (5.25%) and 8/ 1,169 (0.68%), respectively], whereas the seroprevalence of anti-HCV was higher in women (12/1,238 [0.97%] vs. 9/2,353 [0.38%]; odds ratio [OR] = 2.49; 95% confidence interval [Cl]: 1.0-6.0). No significant difference for HBV infection was found across the three study sites or by ethnic group. The seroprevalence of anti-HBc increased with age, but decreased with education level in both genders. Lifetime number of sexual partners was associated with anti-HBc prevalence among men (OR = 1.95; 95% Cl: 1.2-3.1), but not women. The seroprevalence of HBV and HCV was low among Brazilian blood donors, and exposure increased with age in both genders.

Evidence of a Ca(2+)-(center dot)NO-cGMP signaling pathway controlling zoospore biogenesis in the aquatic fungus Blastocladiella emersonii

The sporulation stage of the aquatic fungus Blastocladiella emersonii culminates with the formation and release to the medium of a number of zoospores, which are motile cells responsible for the dispersal of the fungus. The presence in the sporulation solution of 1H-[1,2,4]Oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one (ODQ), a potent and selective inhibitor of nitric oxide-sensitive guanylyl cyclases, completely prevented biogenesis of the zoospores. In addition, this compound was able to significantly reduce cGMP levels, which increase drastically during late sporulation, suggesting the existence of a nitric oxide-dependent mechanism for cGMP synthesis. Furthermore, increased levels of nitric oxide-derived products were detected during sporulation by fluorescence assays using DAF-2 DA, whose signal was drastically reduced in the presence of the nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N omega-Nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME). These results were confirmed by quantitative chemiluminescent determination of the intracellular levels of nitric oxide-derived products. A putative nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity was detected throughout sporulation, and this enzyme activity decreased significantly when L-NAME and 1-[2-(Trifluoromethyl)phenyl]imidazole (TRIM) were added to the assays. NOS assays carried out in the presence of EGTA showed decreased enzyme activity, suggesting the involvement of calcium ions in enzyme activation. Additionally, expressed sequence tags (ESTs) encoding putative guanylyl cyclases and a cGMP-phosphodiesterase were found in B. emersonii EST database (http://blasto.iq.usp.br), and the mRNA levels of the corresponding genes were observed to increase during sporulation. Altogether, data presented here revealed the presence and expression of guanylyl cyclase and cGMP phosphodiesterase genes in B. emersonii and provided evidence of a Ca(2+)-(center dot)NO-cGMP signaling pathway playing a role in zoospore biogenesis. The shoving model for the glass-former LiCl center dot 6H(2)O: A molecular dynamics simulation study

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of LiCl center dot 6H(2)O Showed that the diffusion coefficient D, and also I lie structural relaxation time , follow a power law at high temperatures, D(-1) proportional to (T - T(0))(-mu), with the same experimental parameters for viscosity (T(0) = 207 K, mu = 2.08). Decoupling between D and occurs at T(x) similar to 1.1 T(0). High frequency acoustic excitations for the LiCl center dot 6H(2)O model were obtained by the calculation of time correlation functions of mass current fluctuations. The temperature dependence of the instantaneous shear modulus, G,(T), was considered in the shoving model for supercooled liquids [J.C. Dyre, T. Christensen, N.B. Olsen, J. Non-Cryst. NUCEL (Cell and Molecular Therapy Center): A multidisciplinary center for translational research in Brazil

Social and economical development is closely associated with technological innovation and a well-developed biotechnological industry. In the last few years, Brazil`s scientific production has been steadily increasing; however, the number of patents is lagging behind, with technological and translational research requiring governmental incentive and reinforcement. The Cell and Molecular Therapy Center (NUCEL) was created to develop activities in the translational research field, addressing concrete problems found in biomedical and veterinary areas and actively searching for solutions by employing a genetic engineering approach to generate cell lines over-expressing recombinant proteins to be transferred to local biotech companies, aiming at furthering the development of a national competence for local production of biopharmaceuticals of widespread use and of life-saving importance. To this end, mammalian cell engineering technologies were used to generate cell lines over-expressing several different recombinant proteins of biomedical and biotechnological interest, namely, recombinant human Amylin/IAPP for diabetes treatment, human FVIII and FIX clotting factors for hemophilia, human and bovine FSH for fertility and reproduction, and human bone repair proteins (BMPs). Expression of some of these proteins is also being sought with the baculovirus/insect cell system (BEVS) which, in many cases, is able to deliver high-yield production of recombinant proteins with biological activity comparable to that of mammalian systems, but in a much more cost-effective manner. Transfer of some of these recombinant products to local Biotech companies has been pursued by taking advantage of the Sao Paulo State Foundation (FAPESP) and Federal Government (FINEP, CNPq) incentives for joint Research Development and Innovation partnership projects.

Synthesis and characterization of mono and polymeric cyclopalladated compounds: Crystal and molecular structure of [{Pd(dmba)(ONO(2))}(2)(mu-pz)] center dot H(2)O (pz = pyrazine)

In the treatment of cyclometallated dimer [Pd(dmba)(mu-Cl)](2) (dmba = N,N-dimethylbenzylamine) with AgNO(3) and acetonitrile the result was the monomeric cationic precursor [Pd(dmba)(NCMe)(2)](NO(3)) (NCMe=acetonitrile) (1). Compound 1 reacted with m-nitroaniline (m-NAN) and pirazine (pz), originating [Pd(dmba)(ONO(2))(m-NAN)] (2) and [{Pd(dmba)(ONO(2))}(2)(mu-pz)] center dot H(2)O (3), respectively. These compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR and NMR spectroscopy. The IR spectra of (2-3) display typical bands of monodentade O-bonded nitrate groups, whereas the NMR data of 3 are consistent with the presence of bridging pyrazine ligands. The structure of compound 3 was determined by Xray diffraction analysis. This packing consists of a supramolecular chain formed by hydrogen bonding between the water molecule and nitrato ligands of two consecutive [Pd(2)(dmba)(2)(ONO(2))2(mu-pz)] units. Cationic and neutral phenylmercury(II) complexes with heterocyclic thione ligands. X-ray structures of [HgPh(dmpymtH)][BF(4)] center dot H(2)O and [{HgPh}(2)(mu-dtu)]

The neutral complex [HgPh(dmpymt)] 1 (dmpymtH = 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine-2(1H)-thione) reacts with HBF(4) to give the cationic complex [HgPh(dmpymtH)][BF(4)] 2. The X-ray molecular structure of the later revealed a [2+1] coordination sphere about the mercury(II) atom (C-Hg-S and Hg center dot center dot center dot N). In the dinuclear complex [(HgPh)(2)(mu-dtu)] 3 [dtuH(2) = 2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedithione or dithiouracil] the coordination spheres are also [2+1] although dissimilar regarding the Hg center dot center dot center dot N secondary bonds.
