he solvation of (2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)zinc(II)[Zn(obtpp)], in twelve different solvents results in large red shifts of the B and Q bands of the porphyrin accompanied by enhanced absorbance ratios of the Q bands. These observations are ascribed to the destabilisation of the highest occupied molecular orbital a2u of the porphyrin arising from a flow of charge from the axial ligand to the porphyrin ring through the zinc(II) ion. The binding constants of adducts of [Zn(obtpp)] with neutral bases have been found to be an order of magnitude greater than those observed for the corresponding adducts of (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)-zinc and vary in the order piperidine > imidazole > pyridine > 3-methylpyridine > pyridine-3-carbaldehyde. The enhanced binding constants and large spectral shifts are interpreted in terms of the electrophilicity of [Zn(obtpp)] induced by the electron-withdrawing bromine substituents in the porphyrin core. The structure of [Zn(obtpp)(PrCN)2] has been determined; it reveals six-co-ordinated zinc(II) with two long Zn–N distance [2.51(4), 2.59(3)Å]. The porphyrin is non-planar and displays a saddle-shaped conformation.

Ellipsometric measurements in a wide spectral range (from 0.05 to 6.5 eV) have been carried out on the organic semiconducting polymer, poly2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] (MDMO-PPV), in both undoped and doped states. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function and the refractive index are determined accurately, provided that the layer thickness is measured independently. After doping, the optical properties show the presence of new peaks, which could be well-resolved by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Also for the doped material, the complex refractive index, with respect to the dielectric function, has been determined. The broadening of the optical transitions is due to the delocalization of polarons at higher doping level. The detailed information about the dielectric function as well as refractive index function obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry allows not only qualitative but also quantitative description of the optical properties of the undoped/doped polymer. For the direct characterization of the optical properties of MDMO-PPV, ellipsometry turns out to be advantageous compared to conventional reflection and transmission measurements.

Synthesis of 5, 5-dimethyl- 7-methoxy-4 -oxatricyclo[4,3,1,0(3,7)]- decan-2-one 3a, a novel heterocyclic ring system present in morellin 1, and its 3-substituted derivatives 3b-e, is described from the Diels-Alder adducts 7, available from 1-methoxycyclohexa-1,4-dienes 4. Two routes, which involved the halocyclisation and the oxidative addition, were investigated for the conversion of the adducts 7 into 3. While the halocyclisation method resulted in mixtures, excellent yields of the target molecule were obtained by the second method. Solvolysis of the bromoether 9 resulted in a mixture of rearranged products 10, 13, 15 and 16.

Pyrolysis of (eta(5)-C5Me5WH3)B4H8, 1, in the presence of excess BHCl2 center dot SMe2 in toluene at 100 degrees C led to the isolation of (eta(5)-C5Me5W)(2)B5H9, 2, and B-Cl inserted (eta(5)-C5Me5W)(2)B5H8Cl, 3, and (eta(5)-C5Me5W)(2)B5H7Cl2, (four isomers). All the Chlorinated tungstaboranes were isolated as red and air and moisture sensitive solids. These new compounds have been characterized in solution by H-1, B-11, C-13 NMR, and the structural types were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis of compounds 3, 4, and 7. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carded out on the model molecules of 3-7 to elucidate the actual electronic structures of these chlorinated species. On grounds of DFT calculations we demonstrated the role of transition metals, bridging hydrogens, and the effect of electrophilic substitution of hydrogens at B-H vertices of metallaborane structures.

Hydrogen storage capacity of Tin-1B (n = 3-7) clusters is studied and compared with that of the pristine Ti-n (n = 3-7), using density functional theory (DFT) based calculations. Among these clusters, Ti3B shows the most significant enhancement in the storage capacity by adsorbing 12 H-2, out of which three are dissociated and the other nine are stored as dihydrogen via Kubas-interaction. The best storage in Ti3B is owed to a large charge transfer from Ti to B along with the largest distance of Ti empty d-states above the Fermi level, which is a distinct feature of this particular cluster. Furthermore, the effect of substrates on the storage capacity of Ti3B was assessed by calculating the number of adsorbed H-2 on Ti-3 cluster anchored onto B atoms in the B-doped graphene, BC3, and BN substrates. Similar to free-standing Ti3B, Ti-3 anchored onto boron atom in BC3, stores nine di-hydrogen via Kubas interaction, at the same time eliminating the total number of non-useful dissociated hydrogen. Gibbs energy of adsorption as a function of H-2 partial pressure, indicated that at 250 K and 300 K the di-hydrogens on Ti-3@BC3 adsorb and desorb at ambient pressures. Importantly, Ti-3@BC3 avoids the clustering, hence meeting the criteria for efficient and reversible hydrogen storage media. Copyright (C) 2014, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Adult male bonnet monkeys exhibit nychthemeral rhythms in testosterone (T) secretion but the precise role of this heightened level of T secretion in regulating spermatogenesis is not known. Intranasal administration of microdoses (500 mu g or 250 mu g/day) of Norethisterone (IN-NET) to adult monkeys (n = 6) at 1600 h each day selectively and completely suppressed the nocturnal surge levels of serum T. Concomitant with this was a significant reduction (P<0.01) in serum LH but not FSH levels. DNA flow cytometric analysis of testicular biopsy tissue showed by week 10 of IN-NET treatment an arrest in meiotic transformation of primary spermatocytes (4C) to round/elongate (1C/HC) spermatids and by week 20 there was a complete absence of 4C, 1C and HC cells (with a relative accumulation in 2C cells). The accumulated meiotic (4C) cells at week 10 showed an increase (>80%, P<0.01) in coefficient of variation and a decrease in intensity of DNA-bound ethidium bromide fluorescence, parameters characteristic of degenerating 'apoptotic' subpopulation of germ cells. While two monkeys exhibited acute oligozoospermia 4 became azoospermic by 20 weeks of IN-NET treatment. A complete, qualitative reversal in the regressive changes in spermatogenesis and near-normal sperm output were apparent at the end of a 20-week recovery phase. These data demonstrate that prolonged, selective suppression of nocturnal surge levels of serum T secretion exerts a primary effect on meiosis in spermatogenesis leading to oligo/azoospermic status in adult bonnet monkeys.

Ternary iron(III) complexes (FeL(B)] (1-3) of a trianionic tetradentate phenolate-based ligand (L) and henanthroline base (B), namely, 1,10-phenanthroline (phen, 1), dipyridoquinoxaline (dpq, 2), and dipyridophenazine (dppz, 3), have been prepared and structurally characterized and their DNA binding, cleavage, and photocytotoxic properties studied. The complexes with a FeN3O3 core show the Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox couple near -0.6 V in DMF, a magnetic moment value of similar to 5.9 mu(B), and a binding propensity to both calf thymus DNA and bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein. They exhibit red-light-induced DNA cleavage activity following a metal-assisted photoredox pathway forming HO center dot radicals but do not show any photocleavage of BSA in UV-A light. Complex 3 displays photocytotoxicity in the human cervical cancer cell line (HeLa) and human keratinocyte cell line (HaCaT) with respective IC50 values of 3.59 mu M and 6.07 mu M in visible light and 251 nM and 751 nM in UV-A light of 365 nm. No significant cytotoxicity is observed in the dark. The photoexposed HeLa cells, treated prior with complex 3, have shown marked changes in nuclear morphology as demonstrated by Hoechst 33258 nuclear stain. Generation of reactive oxygen species has been evidenced from the fluorescence enhancement of dichlorofluorescein upon treatment with 3 followed by photoexposure. Nuclear chromatin cleavage has been observed in acridine orange/ethidium bromide dual staining of treated HeLa cells and from alkaline single-cell gel electrophoresis. Caspase 3/7 activity in HeLa cells has been found to be upregulated by only 4 fold after photoirradiation, signifying the fact that cell death through a caspase 3/7 dependent pathway may not be solely operative.

Flower-like nickel nanocone structures are synthesized by a simple chemical reduction method using hydrazine hydrate as the reducing agent. The structure, morphology and magnetic properties of as synthesized products are studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometer. The morphology evolution is studied by varying the reaction temperature and concentration of nickel chloride keeping other conditions unchanged.

35Cl NQR has been investigated in two cyclotriphosphazene derivatives N3P3Cl4Ph2 and N3P3Cl4(NMe2)2. The observed frequencies are assigned to the various chlorines and the temperature variation of the NQR frequencies studied in the range from 77 K to 300 K. The results are analysed using the Bayer-Kushida-Brown approach. Torsional (librational) frequencies are found to fall in the range 10–25 cm−1 and are found to be only slightly temperature dependent.

Arginine decarboxylase (arginine carboxy-lyase EC 4.1.1.19) of Cucumis sativus cotyledons, has a pH optimum of 8.3 and a temperature optimum of 40°. Among the various plant hormones administered to excised cotyledons in culture, benzyladenine and its riboside were most effective in increasing the arginine decarboxylase activity and putrescine content. The enzyme activity and putrescine content were significantly increased on acid feeding of the cotyledons and decreased by KCl treatment. The KCl effect could be only partially reversed by benzyladenine. Abscisic acid inhibited cotyledon growth and also reduced arginine decarboxylase and putrescine levels. This effect was overcome by cytokinins. The half life of the enzyme using cycloheximide was 3.7 hr. Dibutyryl cyclic AMP and 5′-AMP also marginally stimulated the enzyme and putrescine levels. Mixing experiments indicate that there is neither a non-dialysable activator nor inhibitor of the enzyme.

A new analogue of graphene containing boron, carbon and nitrogen (BCN) has been obtained by the reaction of high-surface-area activated charcoal with a mixture of boric acid and urea at 900 degrees C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy reveal the composition to be close to BCN. The X-ray diffraction pattern, high-resolution electron microscopy images and Raman spectrum indicate the presence of graphite-type layers with low sheet-to-sheet registry. Atomic force microscopy reveals the sample to consist of two to three layers of BCN, as in a few-layer graphene. BCN exhibits more electrical resistivity than graphene, but weaker magnetic features. BCN exhibits a surface area of 2911 m(2)g(-1), which is the highest value known for a BxCyNz composition. It exhibits high propensity for adsorbing CO2 (approximate to 100 wt %) at 195 K and a hydrogen uptake of 2.6 wt % at 77 K. A first-principles pseudopotential-based DFT study shows the stable structure to consist of BN3 and NB3 motifs. The calculations also suggest the strongest CO2 adsorption to occur with a binding energy of 3.7 kJ mol(-1) compared with 2.0 kJ mol(-1) on graphene.

This brief introductory article summarizes key findings from experiments and from computer simulations concerning the dramatic changes that commonly occur adjacent to sliding interfaces. We conclude that a wide range of observed features depends on a few basic processes (plastic deformation, interactions with the environment (including the counterface) and mechanical mixing) and that sliding leads to flow patterns similar to those expected in fluid flow.
