ABSTRACT In Cuba, weeds affecting the sugarcane are one of the main causes of low agricultural yields, and their control constitutes some of the main items of expenditure. In general, herbicides are applied, as well as other control methods, without keeping in mind the soil type and the characteristics of these plants. Moreover, weed control research approaching aspects about energy efficiency of the crop production, and environmental damages are missing. Hence, the objective of this investigation was to evaluate diverse technologies of weed handling in sugarcane (Saccharum spp. hybrid), both in spring cane plant and ratoon, in three types of soils, with the purpose of obtaining sustainable productions. The study area was located in the fields of the Sugar Enterprise of the Municipality "Majibacoa”, Las Tunas province (east of Cuba) that possesses ecological conditions that are plentiful along the country. The three more representative types of soils are Fersialitic, Brown, and Vertisol. In this area 31 weeds species have been identified, 16 of the Class Liliopsida and 15 of the Magnoliopsida. In a first group of experiments, nine field rehearsals were developed to evaluate the effectiveness of herbicides and mixtures of these for weed handling in sugarcane, in spring cane plants as well as in ratoon, in the three types of soils. Plots of 80 m-2 were distributed at random blocks with four replications. The effectiveness was evaluated by means of the covering percentage by weeds and the provoked toxicity to the cane plants, keeping in mind the cost associated to each treatment. In preemergence applications in spring cane plant, the most efficient herbicide was the Isoxaflutole with dose of 0.15; 0.20 and 0.25 kg.ha-1 of commercial product (pc) in the soils Fersialítico, Brown and Vertisol respectively. In early postemergence applications the most efficient mixture was that of Isoxaflutole + Ametrina + 2,4-D with the doses of Isoxaflutole mentioned previously. In preemergence applications in ratoon, the most efficient herbicide was the Isoxaflutole at dose of 0.20 kg.ha-1 pc for the soil Fersialític and to 0.25 kg. ha-1 pc for the Brown soil and Vertisol. In a second group, six field rehearsals distributed in two phases were carried out. In the first phase, three experiments were developed, one for each soil type, to evaluate the efficiency of nine technologies of weed handling in spring cane plant. In the following phase, the three remaining rehearsals (one for each soil type) diverse technologies of weed handling were evaluated during two cycles of sugarcane production (spring stage and ratoon). In the spring stage the most efficient technology in the three previous experiments was applied and during ratoon stage other nine technologies were evaluated. In these experiments the different treatments were applied in fringes distributed at random with four replicas. In the evaluated technologies the herbicides and mixtures were used selecting those that were more efficient in the first group of experiments. In each case, the energy efficiency of the sugar production and other derivatives, the soil penetration resistance, the polluting load toward the atmosphere product of the combustion, and the benefits when applying the different technologies were all evaluated. In the first phase (spring cane plant), the technology with better result was the preemergence application of Isoxaflutole immediately after the plantation, followed by chemical eradication with Ammonia Glufosinate, hoeing work with multiple tier approximately to the 80 days of the plantation and pre-closing application with Ammonia Glufosinate. In the second phase (two cycles of the cultivation), the best result was obtained when a preemergence application of Isoxaflutole was carried out in sprout's stage, chemical eradication with Ammonia Glufosinate and pre-closing application with this same herbicide. In the three types of soils during the two cycles, the energy efficiency achieved values of 7.2 to 7.5, the resistance to the penetration 1.2 - 1.5 MPa, the polluting load toward the atmosphere was of 63.3 - 64.9 kg.t-1 of the harvested cane and the obtained benefits of 8,324 - 8,455 Cuban pesos per hectare. This study demonstrates that an efficient control of the weeds should necessarily keep in mind the soil type. This way, in the Vertisols, with more clay content, bigger dose of Isoxaflutole is required and the energy efficiency of the production is smaller. The persistence of certain weeds, especially of the class Liliopsida, requires of an integrated handling him to include different types of herbicides.

Diaporthe (syn. Phomopsis) species are well-known saprobes, endophytes or pathogens on a range of plants. Several species have wide host ranges and multiple species may sometimes colonise the same host species. This study describes eight novel Diaporthe species isolated from live and/or dead tissue from the broad acre crops lupin, maize, mungbean, soybean and sunflower, and associated weed species in Queensland and New South Wales, as well as the environmental weed bitou bush (Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. rotundata) in eastern Australia. The new taxa are differentiated on the basis of morphology and DNA sequence analyses based on the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region, and part of the translation elongation factor-1α and ß-tubulin genes. The possible agricultural significance of live weeds and crop residues ('green bridges') as well as dead weeds and crop residues ('brown bridges') in aiding survival of the newly described Diaporthe species is discussed.

The genus Cercospora contains numerous important plant pathogenic fungi from a diverse range of hosts. Most species of Cercospora are known only from their morphological characters in vivo. Although the genus contains more than 5 000 names, very few cultures and associated DNA sequence data are available. In this study, 360 Cercospora isolates, obtained from 161 host species, 49 host families and 39 countries, were used to compile a molecular phylogeny. Partial sequences were derived from the internal transcribed spacer regions and intervening 5.8S nrRNA, actin, calmodulin, histone H3 and translation elongation factor 1-alpha genes. The resulting phylogenetic clades were evaluated for application of existing species names and five novel species are introduced. Eleven species are epi-, lecto- or neotypified in this study. Although existing species names were available for several clades, it was not always possible to apply North American or European names to African or Asian strains and vice versa. Some species were found to be limited to a specific host genus, whereas others were isolated from a wide host range. No single locus was found to be the ideal DNA barcode gene for the genus, and species identification needs to be based on a combination of gene loci and morphological characters. Additional primers were developed to supplement those previously published for amplification of the loci used in this study. TAXONOMIC NOVELTIES: New species - Cercospora coniogrammes Crous & R.G. Shivas, Cercospora delaireae C. Nakash., Crous, U. Braun & H.D. Shin, Cercospora euphorbiae-sieboldianae C. Nakash., Crous, U. Braun & H.D. Shin, Cercospora pileicola C. Nakash., Crous, U. Braun & H.D. Shin, Cercospora vignigena C. Nakash., Crous, U. Braun & H.D. Shin. Typifications: epitypifications - Cercospora alchemillicola U. Braun & C.F. Hill, Cercospora althaeina Sacc., Cercospora armoraciae Sacc., Cercospora corchori Sawada, Cercospora mercurialis Pass., Cercospora olivascens Sacc., Cercospora violae Sacc.; neotypifications - Cercospora fagopyri N. Diachasmimorpha kraussii is an endoparasitoid of larval dacine fruit flies. To date the only host preference study done on D. kraussii has used fruit flies from outside its native range (Australia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands). In contrast, this paper investigates host preference for four fly species (Bactrocera cacuminata, B. cucumis, B. jarvisi and B. tryoni) which occur sympatrically with the wasp in the Australian component of the native range. Diachasmimorpha kraussii oviposition preference, host suitability (parasitism rate, number of progeny, sex ratio), and offspring performance measures (body length, hind tibial length, developmental time) were investigated with respect to the four fly species in the laboratory in both no-choice and choice situations. The parasitoid accepted all four fruit fly species for oviposition in both no-choice and choice tests; however, adult wasps only emerged from B. jarvisi and B. tryoni. Through dissection, it was demonstrated that parasitoid eggs were encapsulated in both B. cacuminata and B. cucumis. Between the two suitable hosts, measurements of oviposition preference, host suitability and offspring performance measurements either did not vary significantly, or varied in an inconsistent manner. Based on our results, and a related study by other authors, we conclude that D. krausii, at the point of oviposition, cannot discriminate between physiologically suitable and unsuitable hosts.

Oribius species are small flightless weevils endemic to the island of New Guinea and far northern Cape York, Australia. The adults feed externally on leaves, developing fruit and green bark, but their impact as pests and general host use patterns are poorly known. Working in Eastern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea, we carried out structured host use surveys, farmer surveys, shade-house growth trials, and on-farm and on-station impact trials to: (i) estimate the host range of the local Oribius species; (ii) understand adult daily activity patterns; (iii) elucidate feeding habits of the soil dwelling larvae; and (iv) quantify the impacts of adult feeding damage. Oribius inimicus and O. destructor accounted for nearly all the Oribius species encountered locally: of these two O. inimicus was the most abundant. Weevils were collected from 31 of 33 plants surveyed in the Aiyura Valley and a combination of farmer interviews and literature records provided evidence for the beetles being pestiferous on 43 crops currently or previously grown in the Highlands. Adult weevils had a distinct diurnal pattern of being in the upper plant canopy early in the morning and, to a lesser extent, again late in the afternoon. For the remainder of the day beetles resided within the canopy, or possibly off the plant. Movement of adults between plants appeared frequent. Pot trials confirmed the larvae are root feeders. Quantified impact studies showed that the weevils are damaging to a range of vegetable and orchard crops (broccoli, capsicum, celery, French bean, Irish potato, lettuce, orange and strawberry), causing average yield losses of around 30-40%, but up to 100% on citrus. Oribius weevils pose a significant and apparently growing problem for Highland’s agriculture.

Exotic grasses have been introduced in countries worldwide for pasture improvement, soil stabilisation and ornamental purposes. Some of these introductions have proven successful, but many have not (Cook & Dias 2006). In Australia, the Commonwealth Plant Introduction Scheme was initiated in 1929, and over-time introduced more than 5000 species of grasses, legumes and other forage and browse plants (Cook & Dias 2006). Lonsdale (1994) suggested that, in tropical Australia, 13% of introductions have become a problem, with only 5% being considered useful for agriculture. Low (1997) suggested that 5 out of 18 of Australia's worst tropical environmental weeds were intentionally introduced as pasture grasses. The spread and dominance of invasive grass species that degrade the quality of pastures for production can impact significantly on the livelihoods of small proprietors. Although Livestock grazing contributes only a small percentage to the world's GDP (1.5%), maintaining the long-term stability of this industry is crucial because of the high social and environmental consequence of a collapse. One billion of the world's poor are dependent on livestock grazing for food and income with this industry occupying more than 25% of the world's land base (Steinfeld et al. 2006). The ling-term sustainability of livestock grazing is also crucial for the environment. A recent FAO report attributed livestock production as a major cause of five of the most serious environmental problems: global warming, land degredation, air and water pollution, and the loss of biodiversity (Steinfeld et al. 2006). For these reasons, finding more effective approaches that guide the sustainable management of pastures is urgently needed. In Australia more than 55% of land use is for livestock grazing by sheelp and/or cattle. This land use dominate in the semi-arid and arid regions where rainfall and soil conditions are marginal for production (Commonwealth of Australia 2004). Although the level of agriculture production by conglomerates is increasing, the majority of livestock grazing within Australia remains family owned and operated (Commonwealth of Australia 2004). The sustainability of production from a grazed pasture is dependent on its botanical composition (Kemp & Dowling 1991, Kemp et al. 1996). In a grazed pasture, the dominance of an invasive grass species can impact on the functional integrity of the ecosystem, including production and nutrient cycling; wwhich will in turn, affect the income of proprietors and the ability of the system to recover from disturbance and environmental change. In Australia, $0.3 billion is spent on weed control in livestock production, but despite this substantial investment $1.9 billion is still lost in yield as a result of weeds (Sinden et al. 2004). In this paper, we adaprt a framework proposed for the restoration of degraded rainforest communities (Lamb & Gilmour 2003, Lamb et al. 2005) to compare and contrast options for recovering function integrity (i.e. a diverse set of desirable plant species that maintain key ecological processes necessary for sustainable production and nutrient cycling) within pasture communities dominated by an invasive grass species. To do this, we uase a case-study of the invasion of Eragrostis curvula (Africal lovegrss; hereafter, Lovegrass), a serious concern in Australian agricultural communities (Parsons and Cuthbertson 1992). The spread and dominance of Lovegrass is a problem because its low palatability, low nutritional content and competitiveness affect the livelihood of graziers by reducing the diversity of other plant species. We conclude by suggesting modifications to this framework for pasture ecosystems to help increase the effiency of strategies to protect functional integrity and balance social/economic and biodiversity values.
