The ‘particle size effect’ and its manifestation in abrasion still attracts considerable debate as to its origins and the ranking of its likely causes. Experiments have been conducted to study the important contribution that the formation of wear debris can have on the progression of wear. The experiments consist of unlubricated (dry) pin-on-disk tests with silicon carbide coated paper of varying particle size, with different pin material, diameter and loads. It has been observed that the influence of debris formation on wear rate is more pronounced for fine abrasives and soft-wearing materials. Consequently, it is proposed that the particle size effect can be explained in terms of geometrical scaling and the evolution of third-body effects with diminishing particle diameter.

Marked ball grinding tests were carried out in the laboratory using high carbon low alloy steel (cast and forged) and high chrome cast iron balls. Relative ball wear as a function of grinding period and milling conditions was evaluated for the different type of ball materials in the grinding of lead-zinc sulphide and phosphate ores. Results indicated that ball wear increased with time and showed a sharp increase for wet grinding over dry grinding. Ball wear under wet grinding conditions was also influenced by the gaseous atmosphere in the mill. The influence of oxygen on the corrosive wear of grinding balls was increasingly felt in case of sulphide ore grinding. The dispersion of a softer phase in a metallic matrix reduces the coefficient of friction (COF), often at the expense of an increased wear rate at the tribological contact. To address this issue, unlubricated fretting wear tests were performed on spark plasma sintered Cu-Pb nanocomposites against bearing steel. The sintering temperature and the Pb content as well as the fretting parameters were judiciously selected and varied to investigate the role of microstructure (grain size, second-phase content) on the wear resistance properties of Cu-Pb nanocomposites. A combination of the lowest wear rate (similar to 1.5 x 10(-6) mm(3)/Nm) and a modest COF (similar to 0.4) was achieved for Cu-15 wt pct Pb nanocomposites. The lower wear rate of Cu-Pb nanocomposites with respect to unreinforced Cu is attributed to high hardness (similar to 2 to 3.5 GPa) of the matrix, Cu2O/Fe2O3-rich oxide layer formation at tribological interface, and exuding of softer Pb particles. The wear properties are discussed in reference to the characteristics of transfer layer on worn surface as well as subsurface damage probed using focused ion beam microscopy. Interestingly, the flash temperature has been found to have insignificant effect on the observed oxidative wear, and alternative mechanisms are proposed. Importantly, the wear resistance properties of the nanocomposites reveal a weak Hall-Petch-like relationship with grain size of nanocrystalline Cu. Three mechanisms operate during wear of materials. These mechanisms include the Strain Rate Response (SRR - effect of strain rate on plastic deformation), Tribo-Chemical Reactions (TCR) and formation of Mechanically Mixed Layers (MML). The present work investigates the effect of these three in context of the formation of MML. For this wear experiments are done on a pin-on-disc machine using Ti64 as the pin and SS316L as the disc. It is seen that apart from the speed and load, which control the SRR and TCR, the diameter of the pin controls the formation of MML, especially at higher speeds.

This paper covers wear and energy dissipation of solid epoxy induced by the alternative rubbing between two samples of identical thermosetting polymer. Varying normal load, sliding velocity and sliding distance, the authors were able to define and discuss wear and friction laws and associated energy dissipation. Moreover, traces of several wear mechanisms were distinguished on the worn surfaces and associated with applied conditions. Observed under higher velocity, polymer softening and local state transition were explained by surface temperature estimate and confirmed by infra-red spectroscopy measurements. To conclude this study, all observed phenomena are classified into two wear scenarios according to sliding velocity. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.

In this work, multi-component white cast iron was applied by HVOF thermal spray process as alternative to other manufacture processes. Effects of substrate type, substrate pre-heating and heat treatment of coating on mass loss have been determined by rubber wheel apparatus in accordance with ASTM G-65. Furthermore, influence of heat treatment of coating on wear mechanisms was also determined by scanning electron microscopy analysis. Heat-treated coatings presented mass loss three times lower than as-sprayed coatings. Furthermore, wear mechanisms of as-sprayed coating are micro-cutting associated with cracks close to unmelted particles and pores. In heat-treated coating, lesser mass loss is due to sintering. AISI H13 tool steel discs were pulsed plasma nitrided during different times at a constant temperature of 400 °C. Wear tests were performed in order to study the acting wear mechanisms. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and hardness measurements. The results showed that longer nitriding times reduce the wear volumes. The friction coefficient was 0.20 ± 0.05 for all tested conditions and depends strongly on the presence of debris. After wear tests, the wear tracks were characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy and the wear mechanisms were observed to change from low cycle fatigue or plastic shakedown to long cycle fatigue. These mechanisms were correlated to the microstructure and hardness of the nitrided layer.

This paper describes the effects of abrasive hardness and size on the 2-body abrasive wear mechanisms of a boronized low alloy steel. It is found that the wear resistance of the boronized steel is much greater against alumina abrasive than against silicon carbide. This difference in wear resistance is much enhanced when the particle size or the applied load is increased. Scanning electron microscopy of the worn specimens and of the used abrasive papers revealed that the enhanced difference in wear resistance between coarse alumina and silicon carbide papers is due to a change in the wear mechanism produced by silicon carbide papers with increasing abrasive particle size.

      This thesis examines the mechanism of wear occuring to the video head and their effect on signal reproduction. in particular it examines the wear occuring to manganese-zinc ferrite heads in sliding contact with iron oxide media.       A literature survey is presented, which covers magnetic recording technologies, focussing on video recording. Existing work on wear of magnetic heads is also examined, and gaps in the theoretical account of wear mechanisms presented in the literature are identified.       Pilot research was carrried out on the signal degradation and wear associated witha number of commercial video tapes, containing a range of head cleaning agents. From this research, the main body of the research was identified. A number of methods of wear measurement were examined for use in this project. Knoop diamond indentation was chosen because experimentation showed it to be capable of measuring wear occuring in situ. This technique was then used to examine the wear associated with different levels of A12O3 and Cr2O3 head cleaning agents.      The results of the research indicated that, whilst wear of the video head increases linearly with increasing HCA content, signal degradation does not vary significantly. The most significant differences in wear and signal reproduction were observed between the two HCAs. The signal degradation of heads worn with tape samples containing A12O3 HCA was found to be lower than heads worn with tapes containing Cr2O3 HCA.      The results also indicate that the wear to the head is an abrasive process characterised by ploughing of the ferrite surface and chipping of the edges of the head gap. Both phenomena appear to be caused by poor iron oxide and head cleaning particles, which create isolated asperities on the tape surface.

This project is targeted towards establishing the durability and mechanisms of wear involved in the use of 5.25 inch magnetic floppy diskettes with particular reference to the media manufactured by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, 3M Center, St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. In the present work most stress has been laid on the presentation of the conclusions drawn from the results obtained using samples produced specifically for this project. These samples were produced on the pilot plant at 3MTM, St. Paul, USA and are identified by the code 58759-4 with sample numbers SR1 to SR4 each with different lubrication conditions. All of the categories have been produced with four different surface roughnesses by varying the degree of burnishing. It has been found that the mechanisms of wear are related to a fatigue process. Some surprises have been noted in respect of the value of burnishing compared to the observations made elsewhere. Good reasons for these observed differences have been noted, however, and it will be shown that these are merely superficial and not concerned with wear of any real type. The present work reports the effects of the changes in the media's lubrication status and its surface topography as well as presenting evidence for the suggested wear mechanisms.

The extreme diversity of conditions acting on railways necessitates a variety of experimental approaches to study the critical wear mechanisms that present themselves at the contact interface. This work investigates the effects of contact pressure and geometry in rolling-contact wear tests by using discs with different radii of curvature to simulate the varying contact conditions that may be typically found in the field. It is commonly adapted to line contact interface as it has constant contact pressure. But practical scenario of the rail wheel interface, the contact area increase and contact pressure change as tracks worn off. The tests were conducted without any significant amount of traction, but micro slip was still observed due to contact deformation. Moreover, variation of contact pressure was observed due to contact patch elongation and diameter reduction. Rolling contact fatigue, adhesive and sliding wear were observed on the curved contact interface. The development of different wear regimes and material removal phenomena were analysed using microscopic images in order to broaden the understanding of the wear mechanisms occurring in the rail-wheel contact.
