An increasing importance is assigned to the estimation and verification of carbon stocks in forests. Forestry practice has several long-established and reliable methods for the assessment of aboveground biomass; however we still miss accurate predictors of belowground biomass. A major windthrow event exposing the coarse root systems of Norway spruce trees allowed us to assess the effects of contrasting soil stone and water content on belowground allocation. Increasing stone content decreases root/shoot ratio, while soil waterlogging leads to an increase in this ratio. We constructed allometric relationships for belowground biomass prediction and were able to show that only soil waterlogging significantly impacts model parameters. We showed that diameter at breast height is a reliable predictor of belowground biomass and, once site-specific parameters have been developed, it is possible to accurately estimate belowground biomass in Norway spruce.

Red (Trifolium pratense L., cv. “Start”) and white clover varieties (Trifolium repens L., cv. “Debut” and cv. “Haifa”) were waterlogged for 14 days and subsequently recovered for the period of 21 days. Physiological and biochemical responses of the clover varieties were distinctive, which suggested different sensitivity toward flooding. The comparative study of morphological and biochemical parameters such as stem length, leaflet area, dry weight, protein content, protein pattern and proteolytic degradation revealed prominent changes under waterlogging conditions. Protease activity in the stressed plants increased significantly, especially in red clover cv. “Start”, which exhibited eightfold higher azocaseinolytic activity compared to the control. Changes in the protein profiles were detected by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis. The specific response of some proteins (Rubisco, Rubisco-binding protein, Rubisco activase, ClpA and ClpP protease subunits) toward the applied stress was assessed by immunoblotting. The results characterized the red clover cultivar “Start” as the most sensitive toward waterlogging, expressing reduced levels of Rubisco large and small subunits, high content of ClpP protease subunits and increased activity of protease isoforms.

Two examples of GIS-based multiple-criteria evaluations of plantation forests are presented. These desktop assessments use available topographical, geological and pedological information to establish the risk of occurrence of certain environmentally detrimental processes. The first case study is concerned with the risk that chemical additives (i.e. simazine) applied within the forestry landscape may reach the drainage system. The second case study assesses the vulnerability of forested areas to landslides. The subject of the first multiple-criteria evaluation (MCE) was a 4 km2 logging area, which had been recently site-prepared for a Pinus plantation. The criteria considered relevant to the assessment were proximity to creeks, slope, soil depth to the restrictive layer (i.e. potential depth to a perched water table) and soil erodability (based on clay content). The output of the MCE was in accordance with field observations, showing that this approach has the potential to provide management support by highlighting areas vulnerable to waterlogging, which in turn can trigger overland flow and export of pollutants to the local stream network. The subject of the second evaluation was an Araucaria plantation which is prone to landslips during heavy rain. The parameters included in the assessment were drainage system, the slope of the terrain and geological features such as rocks and structures. A good correlation between the MCE results and field observations was found, suggesting that this GIS approach is useful for the assessment of natural hazards. Multiple-criteria evaluations are highly flexible as they can be designed in either vector or raster format, depending on the type of available data. Although tested on specific areas, the MCEs presented here can be easily used elsewhere and assist both management intervention and the protection of the adjacent environment by assessing the vulnerability of the forest landscape to either introduced chemicals or natural hazards.

Only three of the 11 species in the genus Zoysia Willd. have thus far contributed to commercially available turfgrass varieties. One of the neglected taxa is Z. macrantha Desv., an Australian native species further divided into two subspecies. The coarser Z. macrantha subsp. macrantha occurs on sand dunes, headlands and tidal areas along eastern and southeastern coasts from about 23 to 38°S latitude. The shorter, denser-growing Z. macrantha subsp. walshii M.E. Nightingale is found on the southern mainland (South Australia and Victoria from longitude 137° to 148°E and at latitudes higher than 36°S), adjacent offshore islands, and northern, eastern and central Tasmania to 43°S growing on the edges of coastal, sub-coastal and even inland salt lakes, in riverine environments, and from moist grassy depressions (both coastal and inland) to rocky headlands. The latter subspecies has the more discontinuous and specialised distribution, largely determined by the need for an appropriate level of peat, clay or silt in the soil to maintain adequate moisture during the dry summers in southern Australia while at the same time avoiding anything more than temporary waterlogging. It grows on low fertility soils ranging from strongly acid to neutral or mildly alkaline, and is often very closely grazed by marsupials. Both subspecies are salt and drought tolerant, but not notably shade tolerant. Their potential to add greater drought tolerance in particular to the Asian Zoysia material in current use through future breeding programs is discussed.

Australian cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is predominantly grown on heavy clay soils (Vertosols). Cotton grown on Vertosols often experiences episodes of low oxygen concentration in the root-zone, particularly after irrigation events. In subsurface drip-irrigation (SDI), cotton receives frequent irrigation and sustained wetting fronts are developed in the rhizosphere. This can lead to poor soil diffusion of oxygen, causing temporal and spatial hypoxia. As cotton is sensitive to waterlogging, exposure to this condition can result in a significant yield penalty. Use of aerated water for drip irrigation (‘oxygation’) can ameliorate hypoxia in the wetting front and, therefore, overcome the negative effects of poor soil aeration. The efficacy of oxygation, delivered via SDI to broadacre cotton, was evaluated over seven seasons (2005–06 to 2012–13). Oxygation of irrigation water by Mazzei air-injector produced significantly (P < 0.001) higher yields (200.3 v. 182.7 g m–2) and water-use efficiencies. Averaged over seven years, the yield and gross production water-use index of oxygated cotton exceeded that of the control by 10% and 7%, respectively. The improvements in yields and water-use efficiency in response to oxygation could be ascribed to greater root development and increased light interception by the crop canopies, contributing to enhanced crop physiological performance by ameliorating exposure to hypoxia. Oxygation of SDI contributed to improvements in both yields and water-use efficiency, which may contribute to greater economic feasibility of SDI for broadacre cotton production in Vertosols.

Tiruvadi Sambasiva Venkatraman (TSV) was a plant breeder. In response to a call from Pundit Madan Mohan Malaviya, he made it his mission to develop high-yielding varieties of sugarcane for manufacturing sugar and making it available as a sweetening agent and an energy source for the malnourished children of India. Using Saccharum officinarum, then under cultivation in India, as the female parent, he artificially fertilized it with pollen from S. barberi, which grew wild in Coimbatore. After 4-5 recurrent backcrossings of S. officinarum Chi wild Sorghum spontaneum with S. officinarum as the female parent, TSV selected the `rare' interspecies hybrid cane varieties that resembled sugarcane and had approximately 2.5 cm thick juicy stems containing 16-18% sucrose - nearly 35 times more than what occurred in parent stocks. The hybrid canes matured quickly, were resistant to waterlogging, drought, and to the red-rot disease caused by Glomerella tucumanensis (Sordariomycetes: Glomerellaceae), and to the sereh-virus disease. Most importantly, they were amenable for propagation using stem cuttings. In recognition of the development of high-yielding sugarcane varieties, TSV was conferred the titles Rao Bahadur, Rao Sahib, and Sir by the British Government, and Padma Bhushan by the Republic of India. In the next few decades, consequent to TSV's work, India turned into the second largest sugar producer in the world, after Brazil. The hybrid sugarcane varieties developed are the foundational stocks for new sugarcane x bamboo hybrids, and for possible resistance to Puccinia megalocephala (Pucciniomycetes: Pucciniaceae) and Ustilago scitaminea (Ustilaginomycetes: Ustilaginaceae) using molecular techniques.

Dynamic optimization methods have become increasingly important over the last years in economics. Within the dynamic optimization techniques employed, optimal control has emerged as the most powerful tool for the theoretical economic analysis. However, there is the need to advance further and take account that many dynamic economic processes are, in addition, dependent on some other parameter different than time. One can think of relaxing the assumption of a representative (homogeneous) agent in macro- and micro-economic applications allowing for heterogeneity among the agents. For instance, the optimal adaptation and diffusion of a new technology over time, may depend on the age of the person that adopted the new technology. Therefore, the economic models must take account of heterogeneity conditions within the dynamic framework. This thesis intends to accomplish two goals. The first goal is to analyze and revise existing environmental policies that focus on defining the optimal management of natural resources over time, by taking account of the heterogeneity of environmental conditions. Thus, the thesis makes a policy orientated contribution in the field of environmental policy by defining the necessary changes to transform an environmental policy based on the assumption of homogeneity into an environmental policy which takes account of heterogeneity. As a result the newly defined environmental policy will be more efficient and likely also politically more acceptable since it is tailored more specifically to the heterogeneous environmental conditions. Additionally to its policy orientated contribution, this thesis aims making a methodological contribution by applying a new optimization technique for solving problems where the control variables depend on two or more arguments --- the so-called two-stage solution approach ---, and by applying a numerical method --- the Escalator Boxcar Train Method --- for solving distributed optimal control problems, i.e., problems where the state variables, in addition to the control variables, depend on two or more arguments. Chapter 2 presents a theoretical framework to determine optimal resource allocation over time for the production of a good by heterogeneous producers, who generate a stock externalit and derives government policies to modify the behavior of competitive producers in order to achieve optimality. Chapter 3 illustrates the method in a more specific context, and integrates the aspects of quality and time, presenting a theoretical model that allows to determine the socially optimal outcome over time and space for the problem of waterlogging in irrigated agricultural production. Chapter 4 of this thesis concentrates on forestry resources and analyses the optimal selective-logging regime of a size-distributed forest.

Mediterranean species are popular landscape plants in the UK and well suited to the predicted climate change scenarios of hotter, drier summers. What is less clear is how these species will respond to the more unpredictable rainfall patterns also anticipated, where soil water-logging may become more prevalent, especially in urban environments where soil sealing can restrict drainage. Pot experiments on flooding of four Mediterranean species (Cistus × hybridus, Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’, Salvia officinalis and Stachys byzantina) showed that the effects of waterlogging were only severe when the temperature was high and flooding prolonged. All plants survived the flooding in winter, but during the summer a 17-day flood resulted in the death of 30-40% of the Salvia officinalis and Cistus × hybridus. To examine the response of roots to oxygen deprivation over a range of conditions from total absence of oxygen (anoxia), low oxygen (hypoxia) and full aeration, rooted cuttings of Salvia officinalis were grown in a hydroponic-based system and mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen gases bubbled through the media. Anoxia was found to reduce root development dramatically. When the plants were subjected to a period of hypoxia they responded by increasing the production of lateral roots close to the surface thus enabling them to acclimate to subsequent anoxia. This greatly increased their chances of survival.

Within a changing climate, Mediterranean ‘Garrigue’ xerophytes are increasingly recommended as suitable urban landscape plants in north-west Europe, based on their capacity to tolerate high temperature and reduced water availability during summer. Such species, however, have a poor reputation for tolerating waterlogged soils; paradoxically a phenomenon that may also increase in north-west Europe due to predictions for both higher volumes of winter precipitation, and short, but intensive periods of summer rainfall. This study investigated flooding tolerance in four landscape ‘Garrigue’ species, Stachys byzantina, Cistus × hybridus, Lavandula angustifolia and Salvia officinalis. Despite evolving in a dry habitat, the four species tested proved remarkably resilient to flooding. All species survived 17 days flooding in winter, with Stachys and Lavandula also surviving equivalent flooding duration during summer. Photosynthesis and biomass production, however, were strongly inhibited by flooding although the most tolerant species, Stachys quickly restored its photosynthetic capacity on termination of flooding. Overall, survival rates were comparable to previous studies on other terrestrial (including wetland) species. Subsequent experiments using Salvia (a species we identified as ‘intermediate’ in tolerance) clearly demonstrated adaptations to waterlogging, e.g. acclimation against anoxia when pre-treated with hypoxia. Despite anecdotal information to the contrary, we found no evidence to suggest that these xerophytic species are particularly intolerant of waterlogging. Other climatic and biotic factors may restrict the viability and distribution of these species within the urban conurbations of north-west Europe, but we believe increased incidence of flooding per se should not preclude their consideration.
