A minicapillary viscometer utilizing <0.5 ml of sample at a volume fraction of <0.1% is described. The calculated a/b of DPPC/DPPG multilamellar liposome was 1.14 as prolate ellipsoids and a/b of dioleoylpropyltrimethyl ammonium methylsulfate-DNA complex at a charge ratio of 4: 1 (+/-) was 3.7 as prolate ellipsoids or 4.9 as oblate ellipsoids. The deviation of shape from perfect sphere is thus expressed quantitatively in more than two significant figures. In these measurement, the necessary amount of DNA is <0.5 mg.

The intrinsic viscosities of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(vinyl acetate) blends (PEO-PVA) have been measured in chloroform as a function of molecular weights of blend components and compositions. The interaction parameters Delta b obtained from the modified Krigbaum and Wall theory and the differences between the intrinsic viscosities of polymer mixtures and the weight-average intrinsic viscosities of the two blend components were both used to characterize the extent of miscibility of the blend mixtures. The criteria of polymer-polymer miscibility determined by viscometry are reviewed, and a new criterion is proposed based on the classical Huggins equation and the Huggins coefficient K(m) in the blends. It was found that, in a ternary (polymer-A)-(polymer-B)-solvent system, [GRAPHICS] In the absence of strong specific interaction forces between molecules that would encourage aggregation and at sufficiently low concentration, the above equation can be written thus: [GRAPHICS] This equation can be used to determine the miscibility of polymer blends, when: alpha greater-than-or-equal-to 0 miscible, alpha < 0 immiscible. It is found that the new criterion is reasonable and suitable to predict polymer-polymer miscibility by the viscometry method.

Ring-opening thermal polymerization of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (N3P3C&h)a s been investigated at 250 "C and at 1.333-Pa pressure using chlorocyclotriphosphazenes N3P3C15(N=PPh3) and N3P3Cl,.,(NMe2), (n = 2-4), salt hydrates, triphenylphosphine, and benzoic acid as initiators. The linear poly (dich1orophosphazene) products are phenoxylated, and the phenoxy polymers are characterized by gel permeation chromatography and dilute solution viscometry. Among the various initiators investigated, CaS04.2H20b rings about a high conversion (>60%) of N3P3C&to the linear [NPC12], polymer which possesses a high molecular weight (>5 X lo6). The rationale for the choice of the initiators and possible mechanism(s) of polymerization is discussed. Several mixed substituent polymers, [NP(OPh),(OC6H4Me-p)2,1, and [NP(OPh),(OCHzCF3)2,]nh, ave been prepared and their thermal properties evaluated.

The nature of interaction of palladium(II) with calf thymus DNA was studied using viscometry, ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectrophotometry and optical rotatory disperison and circular dichroism measurements. The results indicate that Pd(II) interacts with both the phosphate and bases of DNA. The ORD/CD data indicate that the binding of Pd(II) to DNA brings about considerable conformational changes in DNA.

The nature of interaction of Au(III) with nucleic acids was studied by using methods such as uv and ir spectrophotometry, viscometry, pH titrations, and melting-temperature measurements. Au(III) is found to interact slowly with nucleic acids over a period of several hours. The uv spectra of native calf-thymus DNA 9pH 5.6 acetate buffer containing (0.01M NaCIO4) showed a shift in λ max to high wavelengths and an increase in optical density at 260 nm. There was a fourfold decrease in viscosity (expressed as ηsp/c). The reaction was faster at pH 4.0 and also with denatured DNA (pH 5.6) and whole yeast RNA (pH 5.6). The order of preference of Au(III) (as deduced from the time of completion of reaction) for the nucleic acids in RNA > denatured DNA > DNA. The reaction was found to be completely reversible with respect KCN. Infrared spectra of DNA-Au(III) complexes showed binding to both the phosphate and bases of DNA. The same conclusions were also arrived at by melting-temperature studies of Au(III)-DNA system. pH titrations showed liberation of two hydroxylions at r = 0.12 [r = moles of HAuCl4 added per mole of DNA-(P)] and one hydrogen ion at r = 0.5. The probable binding sites could be N(1)/N(7) of adenine, N(7) and/or C(6)O of guanine, N(3) of cytosine and N(3) of thymine. DNAs differing in their (G = C)-contents [Clostridium perfingens DNA(G = C, 29%), salmon sperm DNA (G + C, 42%) and Micrococcus lysodeikticus DNA(G + C, 29%), salmon sperm DNA (G = C, 72%)] behaved differently toward Au(III). The hyperchromicity observed for DNAs differing in (G + C)-content and cyanide reversal titrations indicate selectivity toward ( A + T)-rich DNA at lw values of r. Chemical analysis and job's continuous variation studies indicated the existence of possible complexes above and below r = 1. The results indicate that Au(III) ions probably bind to hte phosphate group in the initial stages of the reaction, particularly at low values of r, and participation of the base interaction also increases. Cross-linking of the two strands by Au(III) may take place, but a complete collapse of the doulbe helix is not envisaged. It is probable that tilting of the bases or rotaiton of the bases around the glucosidic bond, resulting in a significant distrotion of the double helix, might take place due to binding of Au(III) to DNA.

Two series of flame retardant polymers, viz. polyarylazo phosphate and phosphoramide esters, were synthesized by solution polycondensation of 4,4′-dihydroxyazobenzene with various aryl phosphorodichlorides and aryl phosphoramidic dichlorides. They were characterized by i.r. 1H-, 13C- and 31P-NMR spectroscopy. The molar mass, thermal and flammability studies were carried out by viscometry, thermogravimetry and limiting oxygen index respectively to examine the influence of the phosphate and phosphoramide linkages. The polyphosphoramide esters possess better thermal and flammability characteristics than the polyphosphate esters.

The nature of interaction of Rh(III) with DNA was studied using viscometry and ultraviolet, visible and infrared spectroscopy. The rate of interaction was found to be very slow at room temperature taking several days for completion. The time needed to attain equilibrium is dependent on the concentrations of metal ion, higher the concentration shorter the period required for equilibration. Visible spectra of Rh(III) were found to alter considerably in the presence of DNA. An increase in absorbance and a red shift were observed in the ultraviolet spectra of DNA in the presence of Rh(III). The specific viscosity of DNA solution was found to decrease asymptotically with time and concentrations of metal ion. The melting temperature of DNA was found to increase at lower metal ion concentrations, whereas at higher values a decrease was obtained. At still higher metal ion concentrations (Image ) a ‘nonmeltable state’ of DNA was observed. These results seem to indicate that Rh(III) binds both with the phosphate and the bases of the DNA.

We obtained the single-chain polycarbonate sample, by a new fast evaporation method and found that the polycarbonate sample obtained by this method is completely amorphous, while the polycarbonate sample obtained by other methods all have a certain degree of crystallinity. The glass transition temperature (T-g) of the sample decreases with the decreasing of concentration when the concentration of the prepared solution is below the critical value. The critical concentration we obtained from the T-g dependence of concentration is 0.9% g/mL and is in accord with that obtained by viscometry and light scattering methods directly from the solution. The structural relaxation behavior is found also different from that of a normal bulk sample of polycarbonate. The enthalpic peak of the single-chain sample is lower: than that of the bulk one, which corresponds to the lower glass transition temperature. The peak of the single-chain sample is lower and broader, and the relaxed enthalpy is much lower compared with that of the bulk sample. These results have been explained in terms of the effect of entanglement on the mobility of the segments in polymer and the compact conformation in the single-chain sample.

New copolyether sulfones containing 2,6-bis(p-oxo-benzylidene)cyclohexanone and 2,6-bis(o,p-dioxo-benzylidene)cyclohexanone moieties were prepared in the conventional literature manner by condensing the dipotassium salts of 2,6-bis(p-hydroxybenzylidene)cyclohexanone (III), 2,6-bis(o,p-dihydroxybenzylidene)-cyclohexanone (V), and 2,2-bis(p-hydroxyphenyl)propane (Bisphenol A, VII) with 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone (VI), or by condensing the dipotassium salts of III and VII with a new benzylidene cyclohexanone sulfone macromer (X). Finally, the polycondensation reaction of sulfonyl bis(p-benzaldehydeoxo-p-phenylene) (IX) with cyclohexanone leads to an unsaturated copolymer (XVI). The resulting copolyether sulfones were confirmed by IR, H-1-NMR, viscometry, elemental analysis, thermooptical (TOA), x-ray, and thermogravimetric (TGA) measurements.

The structure and properties of presumed block copolymers of polypropylene (PP) with ethylene-propylene random copolymers (EPR), i.e., PP-EPR and PP-EPR-PP, have been investigated by viscometry, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, gel permeation chromatography, wide-angle x-ray diffraction, and other techniques testing various mechanical properties. PP-EPR and PP-EPR-PP were synthesized using delta-TiCl3-Et2AlCl as a catalyst system. The results indicate that the intrinsic viscosity of these polymers increases with each block-building step, whereas the intrinsic viscosity of those prepared by chain transfer reaction (strong chain-transfer reagent hydrogen was introduced between block-building steps during polymerization) hardly changes with the reaction time. Compared with PP / EPR blends, PP-EPR-PP block copolymers have lower PP and polyethylene crystallinity, and lower melting and crystallization temperatures of crystalline EPR. Two relaxation peaks of PP and EPR appear in the dynamic spectra of blends. They merge into a very broad relaxation peak with block sequence products of the same composition, indicating good compatibility between PP and EPR in the presence of block copolymers. Varying the PP and EPR content affects the crystallinity, density, and morphological structure of the products, which in turn affects the tensile strength and elongation at break. Because of their superior mechanical properties, sequential polymerization products containing PP-EPR and PP-EPR-PP block copolymers may have potential as compatibilizing agents for isotactic polypropylene and polyethylene blends or as potential heat-resistant thermoplastic elastomers.

Aqueous solutions of amphiphilic polymers usually comprise of inter- and intramolecular associations of hydrophobic groups often leading to a formation of a rheologically significant reversible network at low concentrations that can be identified using techniques such as static light scattering and rheometry. However, in most studies published till date comparing water soluble polymers with their respective amphiphilic derivatives, it has been very difficult to distinguish between the effects of molecular mass versus hydrophobic associations on hydrodynamic (intrinsic viscosity [g]) and thermodynamic parameters (second virial coefficient A2), owing to the differences between their degrees of polymerization. This study focuses on the dilute and semi-dilute solutions of hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and its amphiphilic derivatives (hmHEC) of the same molecular mass, along with other samples having a different molecular mass using capillary viscometry, rheometry and static light scattering. The weight average molecular masses (MW) and their distributions for the nonassociative HEC were determined using size exclusion chromatography. Various empirical approaches developed by past authors to determine [g] from dilute solution viscometry data have been discussed. hmHEC with a sufficiently high degree of hydrophobic modification was found to be forming a rheologically significant network in dilute solutions at very low concentrations as opposed to the hmHEC with a much lower degree of hydrophobic modification which also enveloped the hydrophobic groups inside the supramolecular cluster as shown by their [g] and A2. The ratio A2MW/[g], which takes into account hydrodynamic as well as thermodynamic parameters, was observed to be less for associative polymers compared to that of the non-associative polymers.

The anionic speciation of chlorostannate(II) ionic liquids, prepared by mixing 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and tin(II) chloride in various molar ratios, chi(SnCl2), was investigated in both solid and liquid states. The room temperature ionic liquids were investigated by Sn-119 NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and viscometry. Crystalline samples were studied using Raman spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and differential scanning calorimetry. Both liquid and solid systems (crystallized from the melt) contained [SnCl3](-) in equilibrium with Cl- when chi(SnCl2) < 0.50, [SnCl3](-) in equilibrium with [Sn2Cl5](-) when chi(SnCl2) > 0.50, and only [SnCl3](-) when chi(SnCl2) = 0.50. Tin(II) chloride was found to precipitate when chi(SnCl2) > 0.63. No evidence was detected for the existence of [SnCl4](-) across the entire range of chi(SnCl2) although such anions have been reported in the literature for chlorostannate(II) organic salts crystallized from organic solvents. Furthermore, the Lewis acidity of the chlorostannate(II)-based systems, expressed by their Gutmann acceptor number, has been determined as a function of the composition, chi(SnCl2), to reveal Lewis acidity for chi(SnCl2) > 0.50 samples comparable to the analogous systems based on zinc(II). A change of the Lewis basicity of the anion was estimated using H-1 NMR spectroscopy, by comparison of the measured chemical shifts of the C-2 hydrogen in the imidazolium ring. Finally, compositions containing free chloride anions (chi(SnCl2) < 0.50) were found to oxidize slowly in air to form a chlorostannate(IV) ionic liquid containing the [SnCl6](2-) anion.
