3D models of long bones are being utilised for a number of fields including orthopaedic implant design. Accurate reconstruction of 3D models is of utmost importance to design accurate implants to allow achieving a good alignment between two bone fragments. Thus for this purpose, CT scanners are employed to acquire accurate bone data exposing an individual to a high amount of ionising radiation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be a potential alternative to computed tomography (CT) for scanning of volunteers for 3D reconstruction of long bones, essentially avoiding the high radiation dose from CT. In MRI imaging of long bones, the artefacts due to random movements of the skeletal system create challenges for researchers as they generate inaccuracies in the 3D models generated by using data sets containing such artefacts. One of the defects that have been observed during an initial study is the lateral shift artefact occurring in the reconstructed 3D models. This artefact is believed to result from volunteers moving the leg during two successive scanning stages (the lower limb has to be scanned in at least five stages due to the limited scanning length of the scanner). As this artefact creates inaccuracies in the implants designed using these models, it needs to be corrected before the application of 3D models to implant design. Therefore, this study aimed to correct the lateral shift artefact using 3D modelling techniques. The femora of five ovine hind limbs were scanned with a 3T MRI scanner using a 3D vibe based protocol. The scanning was conducted in two halves, while maintaining a good overlap between them. A lateral shift was generated by moving the limb several millimetres between two scanning stages. The 3D models were reconstructed using a multi threshold segmentation method. The correction of the artefact was achieved by aligning the two halves using the robust iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm, with the help of the overlapping region between the two. The models with the corrected artefact were compared with the reference model generated by CT scanning of the same sample. The results indicate that the correction of the artefact was achieved with an average deviation of 0.32 ± 0.02 mm between the corrected model and the reference model. In comparison, the model obtained from a single MRI scan generated an average error of 0.25 ± 0.02 mm when compared with the reference model. An average deviation of 0.34 ± 0.04 mm was seen when the models generated after the table was moved were compared to the reference models; thus, the movement of the table is also a contributing factor to the motion artefacts.

There’s nothing new about this recipe for success: toss in high-stress scenarios, flavour generously with competitive chefs, and garnish with a panel of celebrity judges. With all major broadcasters in the country now dishing up some form of reality cooking programme, Australians could be forgiven for having lost any expectation of original TV material. But that didn’t stop Channel Seven from taking Channel Nine to court last week, arguing its copyright in My Kitchen Rules had been infringed with Nine’s latest prime-time effort, The Hotplate. After the first few episodes went to air, Seven asked for an injunction to stop Nine from broadcasting any more episodes of the reality show. So let’s look at some common confusions about copyright law and how it relates to reality television. Because in this context, copyright infringement isn’t about shows sharing major similarities, or about protecting ideas, but rather the expression of these ideas in the final product. Still, stretching copyright law to protect the “vibe” of a work isn’t good for artists, TV producers or viewers: copyright was designed to nurture creativity, not stifle it.

YKL-40 regulates vascular endothelial growth factors and induces tumor proliferation. We investigated YKL-40 before and after treatment with vorinostat in 31 polycythemia vera (PV) and 16 essential thrombocythemia (ET) patients. Baseline PV patient levels were 2 times higher than in healthy controls (P < 0.0001) and 1.7 times higher than in ET (P = 0.02). A significant correlation between YKL-40 at baseline and neutrophils, CRP, LDH, JAK2V617F and platelets in PV patients was observed, as well as a significantly greater reduction of YKL-40 levels in PV patients responding to therapy. YKL-40 might be a novel marker of disease burden and progression in myeloproliferative neoplasms.

OBJECTIVES: To assess magnetic resonance (MR)-colonography (MRC) for detection of colorectal lesions using two different T1w three-dimensional (3D)-gradient-recalled echo (GRE)-sequences and integrated parallel data acquisition (iPAT) at a 3.0 Tesla MR-unit. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective study, 34 symptomatic patients underwent dark lumen MRC at a 3.0 Tesla unit before conventional colonoscopy (CC). After colon distension with tap water, 2 high-resolution T1w 3D-GRE [3-dimensional fast low angle shot (3D-FLASH), iPAT factor 2 and 3D-volumetric interpolated breathhold examination (VIBE), iPAT 3] sequences were acquired without and after bolus injection of gadolinium. Prospective evaluation of MRC was performed. Image quality of the different sequences was assessed qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings of the same day CC served as standard of reference. RESULTS: MRC identified all polyps >5 mm (16 of 16) in size and all carcinomas (4 of 4) correctly. Fifty percent of the small polyps VIBE. The 3D-FLASH sequence showed a 3-fold increase in signal-to-noise ratio (8 +/- 3.3 standard deviation (SD) in lesions without contrast enhancement (CE); 24.3 +/- 7.8 SD after CE). For the 3D-VIBE sequence, signal-to-noise ratio doubled in the detected lesions (147 +/- 54 SD without and 292 +/- 168 SD after CE). Although image quality was ranked lower in the VIBE, the image quality score of both sequences showed no statistical significant difference (chi > 0.6). CONCLUSIONS: MRC using 3D-GRE-sequences and iPAT is feasible at 3.0 T-systems. The high-resolution 3D-FLASH was slightly preferred over the 3D-VIBE because of better image quality, although both used sequences showed no statistical significant difference.

AIM: To determine the feasibility of evaluating surgically induced hepatocyte damage using gadoxetate disodium (Gd-EOB-DTPA) as a marker for viable hepatocytes at magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after liver resection. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen patients were prospectively enrolled in this institutional review board-approved study prior to elective liver resection after informed consent. Three Tesla MRI was performed 3-7 days after surgery. Three-dimensional (3D) T1-weighted (W) volumetric interpolated breath-hold gradient echo (VIBE) sequences covering the liver were acquired before and 20 min after Gd-EOB-DTPA administration. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was used to compare the uptake of Gd-EOB-DTPA in healthy liver tissue and in liver tissue adjacent to the resection border applying paired Student's t-test. Correlations with potential influencing factors (blood loss, duration of intervention, age, pre-existing liver diseases, postoperative change of resection surface) were calculated using Pearson's correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Before Gd-EOB-DTPA administration the SNR did not differ significantly (p = 0.052) between healthy liver tissue adjacent to untouched liver borders [59.55 ± 25.46 (SD)] and the liver tissue compartment close to the resection surface (63.31 ± 27.24). During the hepatocyte-specific phase, the surgical site showed a significantly (p = 0.04) lower SNR (69.44 ± 24.23) compared to the healthy site (78.45 ± 27.71). Dynamic analyses revealed a significantly lower increase (p = 0.008) in signal intensity in the healthy tissue compared to the resection border compartment. CONCLUSION: EOB-DTPA-enhanced MRI may have the potential to be an effective non-invasive tool for detecting hepatocyte damage after liver resection.

An improved light-dependent assay was used to characterize the NAD(P)H dehydrogenase (NDH) in thylakoids of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). The enzyme was sensitive to rotenone, confirming the involvement of a complex I-type enzyme. NADPH and NADH were equally good substrates for the dehydrogenase. Maximum rates of activity were 10 to 19 μmol electrons mg−1 chlorophyll h−1, corresponding to about 3% of linear electron-transport rates, or to about 40% of ferredoxin-dependent cyclic electron-transport rates. The NDH was activated by light treatment. After photoactivation, a subsequent light-independent period of about 1 h was required for maximum activation. The NDH could also be activated by incubation of the thylakoids in low-ionic-strength buffer. The kinetics, substrate specificity, and inhibitor profiles were essentially the same for both induction strategies. The possible involvement of ferredoxin:NADP+ oxidoreductase (FNR) in the NDH activity could be excluded based on the lack of preference for NADPH over NADH. Furthermore, thenoyltrifluoroacetone inhibited the diaphorase activity of FNR but not the NDH activity. These results also lead to the conclusion that direct reduction of plastoquinone by FNR is negligible.

Light-induced damage to photosystem I (PSI) was studied during low-light illumination of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) at chilling temperatures. A 4-h illumination period induced a significant inactivation of PSI electron transport activity. Flash-induced P700 absorption decay measurements revealed progressive damage to (a) the iron-sulfur clusters FA and FB, (b) the iron-sulfur clusters FA, FB, and FX, and (c) the phylloquinone A1 and the chlorophyll A0 or P700 of the PSI electron acceptor chain. Light-induced PSI damage was also evidenced by partial degradation of the PSI-A and PSI-B proteins and was correlated with the appearance of smaller proteins. Aggravated photodamage was observed upon illumination of barley leaves infiltrated with KCN, which inhibits Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase. This indicates that the photodamage of PSI in barley observed during low-light illumination at chilling temperatures arises because the defense against active oxygen species by active oxygen-scavenging enzymes is insufficient at these specific conditions. The data obtained demonstrate that photoinhibition of PSI at chilling temperatures is an important phenomenon in a cold-tolerant plant species.
