We report on our findings of the bright, pulsating, helium atmosphere white dwarf GD 358, based on time-resolved optical spectrophotometry. We identify 5 real pulsation modes and at least 6 combination modes at frequencies consistent with those found in previous observations. The measured Doppler shifts from our spectra show variations with amplitudes of up to 5.5 km s-1 at the frequencies inferred from the flux variations. We conclude that these are variations in the line-of-sight velocities associated with the pulsational motion. We use the observed flux and velocity amplitudes and phases to test theoretical predictions within the convective driving framework, and compare these with similar observations of the hydrogen atmosphere white dwarf pulsators (DAVs). The wavelength dependence of the fractional pulsation amplitudes (chromatic amplitudes) allows us to conclude that all five real modes share the same spherical degree, most likely, l=1. This is consistent with previous identifications based solely on photometry. We find that a high signal-to-noise mean spectrum on its own is not enough to determine the atmospheric parameters and that there are small but significant discrepancies between the observations and model atmospheres. The source of these remains to be identified. While we infer Teff =24 kK and log g ~ 8.0 from the mean spectrum, the chromatic amplitudes, which are a measure of the derivative of the flux with respect to the temperature, unambiguously favour a higher effective temperature, 27 kK, which is more in line with independent determinations from ultra-violet spectra.

This thesis is devoted to the study of the properties of high-redsfhit galaxies in the epoch 1 < z < 3, when a substantial fraction of galaxy mass was assembled, and when the evolution of the star-formation rate density peaked. Following a multi-perspective approach and using the most recent and high-quality data available (spectra, photometry and imaging), the morphologies and the star-formation properties of high-redsfhit galaxies were investigated. Through an accurate morphological analyses, the built up of the Hubble sequence was placed around z ~ 2.5. High-redshift galaxies appear, in general, much more irregular and asymmetric than local ones. Moreover, the occurrence of morphological k-correction is less pronounced than in the local Universe. Different star-formation rate indicators were also studied. The comparison of ultra-violet and optical based estimates, with the values derived from infra-red luminosity showed that the traditional way of addressing the dust obscuration is problematic, at high-redshifts, and new models of dust geometry and composition are required. Finally, by means of stacking techniques applied to rest-frame ultra-violet spectra of star-forming galaxies at z~2, the warm phase of galactic-scale outflows was studied. Evidence was found of escaping gas at velocities of ~ 100 km/s. Studying the correlation of inter-stellar absorption lines equivalent widths with galaxy physical properties, the intensity of the outflow-related spectral features was proven to depend strongly on a combination of the velocity dispersion of the gas and its geometry.

We present a proof of concept for a novel nanosensor for the detection of ultra-trace amounts of bio-active molecules in complex matrices. The nanosensor is comprised of gold nanoparticles with an ultra-thin silica shell and antibody surface attachment, which allows for the immobilization and direct detection of bio-active molecules by surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) without requiring a Raman label. The ultra-thin passive layer (~1.3 nm thickness) prevents competing molecules from binding non-selectively to the gold surface without compromising the signal enhancement. The antibodies attached on the surface of the nanoparticles selectively bind to the target molecule with high affinity. The interaction between the nanosensor and the target analyte result in conformational rearrangements of the antibody binding sites, leading to significant changes in the surface enhanced Raman spectra of the nanoparticles when compared to the spectra of the un-reacted nanoparticles. Nanosensors of this design targeting the bio-active compounds erythropoietin and caffeine were able to detect ultra-trace amounts the analyte to the lower quantification limits of 3.5×10−13 M and 1×10−9 M, respectively.

Raman spectra of single crystals of K2M(SO4)2 · 6 H2O where M=Mg, Zn, Ni or Co have been recorded for the first time using λ 2537 as the exciting radiation. The corresponding five single sulphates have also been studied. Interesting results concerning the substitution of magnesium, zinc, nickel or cobalt in the double sulphate lattice on the sulphate frequencies are observed. The lattice spectra of these double sulphates are analysed group theoretically and discussed in relation to the lattice spectra of the corresponding individual sulphates. Certain new results concerning the Raman spectra of the individual sulphates have also been obtained and in the case of CoSO4 · 7 H2O the spectrum has been recorded for the first time.

Ultra thin films of pure silicon nitride were grown on a Si (1 1 1) surface by exposing the surface to radio-frequency (RF) nitrogen plasma with a high content of nitrogen atoms. The effect of annealing of silicon nitride surface was investigated with core-level photoelectron spectroscopy. The Si 2p photoelectron spectra reveals a characteristic series of components for the Si species, not only in stoichiometric Si3N4 (Si4+) but also in the intermediate nitridation states with one (Si1+) or three (Si3+) nitrogen nearest neighbors. The Si 2p core-level shifts for the Si1+, Si3+, and Si4+ components are determined to be 0.64, 2.20, and 3.05 eV, respectively. In annealed sample it has been observed that the Si4+ component in the Si 2p spectra is significantly improved, which clearly indicates the crystalline nature of silicon nitride. The high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and photoluminescence (PL) studies showed a significant improvement of the crystalline qualities and enhancement of the optical properties of GaN grown on the stoichiometric Si3N4 by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Carbon thin films are very important as protective coatings for a wide range of applications such as magnetic storage devices. The key parameter of interest is the sp3 fraction, since it controls the mechanical properties of the film. Visible Raman spectroscopy is a very popular technique to determine the carbon bonding. However, the visible Raman spectra mainly depend on the configuration and clustering of the sp2 sites. This can result in the Raman spectra of different samples looking similar albeit having a different structure. Thus, visible Raman alone cannot be used to derive the sp3 content. Here we monitor the carbon bonding by using a combined study of Raman spectra taken at two wavelengths (514 and 244 nm). We show how the G peak dispersion is a very useful parameter to investigate the carbon samples and we endorse it as a production-line characterisation tool. The dispersion is proportional to the degree of disorder, thus making it possible to distinguish between graphitic and diamond-like carbon. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

10 mu m-thick ultra-thin Si (111) membranes for GaN epi-layers growth were successfully fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate by backside etching the handle Si and buried oxide (BOX) layer. Then 1 mu m-thick GaN layers were deposited on these Si membranes by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). The crack-free areas of 250 mu m, x 250 mu m were obtained on the GaN layers due to the reduction of thermal stress by using these ultra-thin Si membranes, which was further confirmed by the photoluminescence (PL) spectra and the simulation results from the finite element method calculation by using the software of ANSYS. In this paper, a newly developed approach was demonstrated to utilize micromechanical structures for GaN growth, which would improve the material quality of the epi-layers and facilitate GaN-based micro electro-mechanical system (MEMS) fabrication, especially the pressure sensor, in the future applications. The deep centers of high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) and pseudomorphic-HEMT (P-HEMT) functional materials of ultra-high-speed microstructures grown by MBE are investigated using deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) technique. DLTS spectra demonstrate that midgap states, having larger concentrations and capture cross sections, are measured in n-AlGaAs layers of HEMT and P-HEMT structures. These states may correlate strongly with oxygen content of n-AlGaAs layer. At the same time, one can observe that the movement of DX center is related to silicon impurity that is induced by the strain in AlGaAs layer of the mismatched AlGaAs/InGaAs/GaAs system of P-HEMT structure. The experimental results also show that DLTS technique may be a tool of optimization design of the practical devices.

A kind of ultra-narrow dual-channel filter is proposed in principle and demonstrated experimentally. This filter is designed by means of two sampled fibre Bragg gratings (SFBGs), where one is periodic 0-pi sampling and the other is symmetrical spatial sampling. The former can create two stopbands in the transmission spectra and the latter can produce two ultra-riarrow passbands. Our filter has the 3-dB bandwidth of about 1 pm, whose value is two orders of magnitude less than the bandwidth of the traditional SFBG filters. The proposed filter has a merit that the channel spacing remains unchanged when tuning the filter.

Recent searches by unbiased, wide-field surveys have uncovered a group of extremely luminous optical transients. The initial discoveries of SN 2005ap by the Texas Supernova Search and SCP-06F6 in a deep Hubble pencil beam survey were followed by the Palomar Transient Factory confirmation of host redshifts for other similar transients. The transients share the common properties of high optical luminosities (peak magnitudes similar to -21 to -23), blue colors, and a lack of H or He spectral features. The physical mechanism that produces the luminosity is uncertain, with suggestions ranging from jet-driven explosion to pulsational pair instability. Here, we report the most detailed photometric and spectral coverage of an ultra-bright transient (SN 2010gx) detected in the Pan-STARRS 1 sky survey. In common with other transients in this family, early-time spectra show a blue continuum and prominent broad absorption lines of O II. However, about 25 days after discovery, the spectra developed type Ic supernova features, showing the characteristic broad Fe II and Si II absorption lines. Detailed, post-maximum follow-up may show that all SN 2005ap and SCP-06F6 type transients are linked to supernovae Ic. This poses problems in understanding the physics of the explosions: there is no indication from late-time photometry that the luminosity is powered by Ni-56, the broad light curves suggest very large ejected masses, and the slow spectral evolution is quite different from typical Ic timescales. The nature of the progenitor stars and the origin of the luminosity are intriguing and open questions.

We examine current methods of numerically implementing Compton scattering in the context of intense laser-matter interactions. In a recent publication [1] it has been shown that a commonly used approach generates the correct spectra in nearly all cases, except those when the harmonic structure is important. Here we provide an explanation for this using an alternative, classical argument.

This paper reports on the design and manufacture of an ultra-wide (5-30µm) infrared edge filter for use in FTIR studies of the low frequency vibrational modes of metallo-proteins. We present details of the spectral design and manufacture of such a filter which meets the demanding bandwidth and transparency requirements of the application, and spectra that present the new data possible with such a filter. A design model of the filter and the materials used in its construction has been developed capable of accurately predicting spectral performance at both 300K and at the reduced operating temperature at 200K. This design model is based on the optical and semiconductor properties of a multilayer filter containing PbTe (IV-VI) layer material in combination with the dielectric dispersion of ZnSe (II-VI) deposited on a CdTe (II-VI) substrate together with the use of BaF2 (II-VII) as an antireflection layer. Comparisons between the computed spectral performance of the model and spectral measurements from manufactured coatings over a wavelength range of 4-30µm and temperature range 300-200K are presented. Finally we present the results of the FTIR measurements of Photosystem II showing the improvement in signal to noise ratio of the measurement due to using the filter, together with a light induced FTIR difference spectrum of Photosystem II.

In this work we employ the state of the art pseudopotential method, within a generalized gradient approximation to the density functional theory, to investigate the adsorption process of furan on the silicon (001) surface. A direct comparison of different adsorption structures with x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS), near edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and high resolution spectroscopy experimental data allows us to identify the [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction as the most probable adsorbate. In addition, theoretical scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) images are presented, with a view to contributing to further experimental investigations.

In this work we have studied pure and thulium- and chromium-doped ZBLAN glasses irradiated by ultra-short laser pulses. A Ti:sapphire CPA system was used, producing a 500 Hz train of pulses, centered at 830 nm, with 375 mu J of energy and 50 fs of duration (FWHM). The beam was focused by a 20 Him lens, producing a converging beam with a waist of 12 pin. The absorption spectra before and after laser irradiation were obtained showing production of color centers in pure, thulium-doped and chromium-doped ZBLAN glasses. A damage threshold of 9.56 TW/cm(2) was determined for ZBLAN. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
