Walker et al. defined two families of binary operations on M (set of functions of [0,1] in [0,1]), and they determined that, under certain conditions, those operations are t-norms (triangular norm) or t-conorms on L (all the normal and convex functions of M). We define binary operations on M, more general than those given by Walker et al., and we study many properties of these general operations that allow us to deduce new t-norms and t-conorms on both L, and M.

The design of full programmable type-2 membership function circuit is presented in this paper. This circuit is used to implement the fuzzifier block of Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controller chip. In this paper the type-2 fuzzy set was obtained by blurring the width of the type-1 fuzzy set. This circuit allows programming the height and the shape of the membership function. It operates in current mode, with supply voltage of 3.3V. The simulation results of interval type-2 membership function circuit have been done in CMOS 0.35μm technology using Mentor Graphics software. © 2011 IEEE.

Los conjuntos borrosos de tipo 2 (T2FSs) fueron introducidos por L.A. Zadeh en 1975 [65], como una extensión de los conjuntos borrosos de tipo 1 (FSs). Mientras que en estos últimos el grado de pertenencia de un elemento al conjunto viene determinado por un valor en el intervalo [0, 1], en el caso de los T2FSs el grado de pertenencia de un elemento es un conjunto borroso en [0,1], es decir, un T2FS queda determinado por una función de pertenencia μ : X → M, donde M = [0, 1][0,1] = Map([0, 1], [0, 1]), es el conjunto de las funciones de [0,1] en [0,1] (ver [39], [42], [43], [61]). Desde que los T2FSs fueron introducidos, se han generalizado a dicho conjunto (ver [39], [42], [43], [61], por ejemplo), a partir del “Principio de Extensión” de Zadeh [65] (ver Teorema 1.1), muchas de las definiciones, operaciones, propiedades y resultados obtenidos en los FSs. Sin embargo, como sucede en cualquier área de investigación, quedan muchas lagunas y problemas abiertos que suponen un reto para cualquiera que quiera hacer un estudio profundo en este campo. A este reto se ha dedicado el presente trabajo, logrando avances importantes en este sentido de “rellenar huecos” existentes en la teoría de los conjuntos borrosos de tipo 2, especialmente en las propiedades de autocontradicción y N-autocontradicción, y en las operaciones de negación, t-norma y t-conorma sobre los T2FSs. Cabe destacar que en [61] se justifica que las operaciones sobre los T2FSs (Map(X,M)) se pueden definir de forma natural a partir de las operaciones sobre M, verificando las mismas propiedades. Por tanto, por ser más fácil, en el presente trabajo se toma como objeto de estudio a M, y algunos de sus subconjuntos, en vez de Map(X,M). En cuanto a la operación de negación, en el marco de los conjuntos borrosos de tipo 2 (T2FSs), usualmente se emplea para representar la negación en M, una operación asociada a la negación estándar en [0,1]. Sin embargo, dicha operación no verifica los axiomas que, intuitivamente, debe verificar cualquier operación para ser considerada negación en el conjunto M. En este trabajo se presentan los axiomas de negación y negación fuerte en los T2FSs. También se define una operación asociada a cualquier negación suprayectiva en [0,1], incluyendo la negación estándar, y se estudia, junto con otras propiedades, si es negación y negación fuerte en L (conjunto de las funciones de M normales y convexas). Además, se comprueba en qué condiciones se cumplen las leyes de De Morgan para un extenso conjunto de pares de operaciones binarias en M. Por otra parte, las propiedades de N-autocontradicción y autocontradicción, han sido suficientemente estudiadas en los conjuntos borrosos de tipo 1 (FSs) y en los conjuntos borrosos intuicionistas de Atanassov (AIFSs). En el presente trabajo se inicia el estudio de las mencionadas propiedades, dentro del marco de los T2FSs cuyos grados de pertenencia están en L. En este sentido, aquí se extienden los conceptos de N-autocontradicción y autocontradicción al conjunto L, y se determinan algunos criterios para verificar tales propiedades. En cuanto a otras operaciones, Walker et al. ([61], [63]) definieron dos familias de operaciones binarias sobre M, y determinaron que, bajo ciertas condiciones, estas operaciones son t-normas (normas triangulares) o t-conormas sobre L. En este trabajo se introducen operaciones binarias sobre M, unas más generales y otras diferentes a las dadas por Walker et al., y se estudian varias propiedades de las mismas, con el objeto de deducir nuevas t-normas y t-conormas sobre L. ABSTRACT Type-2 fuzzy sets (T2FSs) were introduced by L.A. Zadeh in 1975 [65] as an extension of type-1 fuzzy sets (FSs). Whereas for FSs the degree of membership of an element of a set is determined by a value in the interval [0, 1] , the degree of membership of an element for T2FSs is a fuzzy set in [0,1], that is, a T2FS is determined by a membership function μ : X → M, where M = [0, 1][0,1] is the set of functions from [0,1] to [0,1] (see [39], [42], [43], [61]). Later, many definitions, operations, properties and results known on FSs, have been generalized to T2FSs (e.g. see [39], [42], [43], [61]) by employing Zadeh’s Extension Principle [65] (see Theorem 1.1). However, as in any area of research, there are still many open problems which represent a challenge for anyone who wants to make a deep study in this field. Then, we have been dedicated to such challenge, making significant progress in this direction to “fill gaps” (close open problems) in the theory of T2FSs, especially on the properties of self-contradiction and N-self-contradiction, and on the operations of negations, t-norms (triangular norms) and t-conorms on T2FSs. Walker and Walker justify in [61] that the operations on Map(X,M) can be defined naturally from the operations onMand have the same properties. Therefore, we will work onM(study subject), and some subsets of M, as all the results are easily and directly extensible to Map(X,M). About the operation of negation, usually has been employed in the framework of T2FSs, a operation associated to standard negation on [0,1], but such operation does not satisfy the negation axioms on M. In this work, we introduce the axioms that a function inMshould satisfy to qualify as a type-2 negation and strong type-2 negation. Also, we define a operation on M associated to any suprajective negation on [0,1], and analyse, among others properties, if such operation is negation or strong negation on L (all normal and convex functions of M). Besides, we study the De Morgan’s laws, with respect to some binary operations on M. On the other hand, The properties of self-contradiction and N-self-contradiction have been extensively studied on FSs and on the Atanassov’s intuitionistic fuzzy sets (AIFSs). Thereon, in this research we begin the study of the mentioned properties on the framework of T2FSs. In this sense, we give the definitions about self-contradiction and N-self-contradiction on L, and establish the criteria to verify these properties on L. Respect to the t-norms and t-conorms, Walker et al. ([61], [63]) defined two families of binary operations on M and found that, under some conditions, these operations are t-norms or t-conorms on L. In this work we introduce more general binary operations on M than those given by Walker et al. and study which are the minimum conditions necessary for these operations satisfy each of the axioms of the t-norm and t-conorm.

The task of controlling urban traffic requires flexibility, adaptability and handling uncertain information spread through the intersection network. The use of fuzzy sets concepts convey these characteristics to improve system performance. This paper reviews a distributed traffic control system built upon a fuzzy distributed architecture previously developed by the authors. The emphasis of the paper is on the application of the system to control part of Campinas downtown area. Simulation experiments considering several traffic scenarios were performed to verify the capabilities of the system in controlling a set of coupled intersections. The performance of the proposed system is compared with conventional traffic control strategies under the same scenarios. The results obtained show that the distributed traffic control system outperforms conventional systems as far as average queues, average delay and maximum delay measures are concerned.

Desde a incorporação da automação no processo produtivo, a busca por sistemas mais eficientes, objetivando o aumento da produtividade e da qualidade dos produtos e serviços, direcionou os estudos para o planejamento de estratégias que permitissem o monitoramento de sistemas com o intuito principal de torna-los mais autônomos e robustos. Por esse motivo, as pesquisas envolvendo o diagnóstico de faltas em sistemas industriais tornaram-se mais intensivas, visto a necessidade da incorporação de técnicas para monitoramente detalhado de sistemas. Tais técnicas permitem a verificação de perturbações, falta ou mesmo falhas. Em vista disso, essa trabalho investiga técnicas de detecção e diagnostico de faltas e sua aplicação em motores de indução trifásicos, delimitando o seu estudo em duas situações: sistemas livre de faltas, e sobre atuação da falta incipiente do tipo curto-circuitoparcial nas espiras do enrolamento do estator. Para a detecção de faltas, utilizou-se analise paramétrica dos parâmetros de um modelo de tempo discreto, de primeira ordem, na estrutura autoregressivo com entradas exógenas (ARX). Os parâmetros do modelo ARX, que trazem informação sobre a dinâmica dominante do sistema, são obtidos recursivamente pela técnica dos mínimos quadrados recursivos (MQR). Para avaliação da falta, foi desenvolvido um sistema de inferência fuzzy (SIF) intervala do tipo-2, cuja mancha de incerteza ou footprint of uncertainty (FOU), características de sistema fuzzy tipo-2, é ideal como forma de representar ruídos inerentes a sistemas reais e erros numéricos provenientes do processo de estimação paramétrica. Os parâmetros do modelo ARX são entradas para o SIF. Algoritmos genéricos (AG’s) foram utilizados para otimização dos SIF intervalares tipo-2, objetivando reduzir o erro de diagnóstico da falta identificada na saída desses sistemas. Os resultados obtidos em teste de simulação computacional demonstram a efetividade da metodologia proposta.

The main objective of the presented study is the development of a predictive interval type-2 fuzzy inference system in order to estimate the mortality risk for a newborn, to be used as an auxiliary tool for decision making in medical centers where there is a lack of professionals for this purpose and, afterwards, to compare its performance to a type-1 fuzzy system. The input variables were chosen due to their acquisition ‘simplicity, not involving any invasive tests, such as blood tests or other specific tests. The variables are easily obtained in the first few minutes of life: birth weight, gestational age at delivery, 5-minute Apgar score and previous report of stillbirth. Databases from the DATASUS were used to validate the model. 1351 records from the city of São José dos Campos, a mid-sized city in the São Paulo state’s countryside, were considered in this study. Finally, an analysis using the ROC curve was performed to estimate the model’s accuracy

In this work was developed a fuzzy computational model type-2 predictive interval, using the software of the type-2 fuzzy MATLAB toolbox, the final idea is to estimate the number of hospitalizations of patients with respiratory diseases. The interest in the creation of this model is to assist in decision makeshift hospital environment, where there are no medical or professional equipment available to provide the care that the population need. It began working with the study of fuzzy logic, the fuzzy inference system and fuzzy toolbox. Through a real database provided by the Departamento de Informática do Sistema Único de Saúde (DATASUS) and Companhia de Tecnologia de Saneamento Básico (CETESB), was possible to start the model. The analyzed database is composed of the number of patients admitted with respiratory diseases a day for the public hospital in São José dos Campos, during the year 2009 and by factors such as PM10, SO2, wind and humidity. These factors were analyzed as input variables and, through these, is possible to get the number of admissions a day, which is the output variable of the model. For data analysis we used the fuzzy control method type-2 Mamdani. In the following steps the performance developed in this work was compared with the performance of the same model using fuzzy logic type-1. Finally, the validity of the models was estimated by the ROC curve

The main objective of the presented study is the design of a analog multiplier-divider as integrant part of the type-reducer circuit of type-2 fuzzy controller chip. The proposed circuit is a multiplier/divider which operates in current mode, in the CMOS technology with a supply voltage of 1.8 V.The circuit simulation was performed in PSPICE software with simulation model provided by AMS (Austria Mikro Systems International) in CMOS technology 0.35μm

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) exhibit insulin resistance associated with obesity and inflammatory response, besides an increased level of oxidative DNA damage as a consequence of the hyperglycemic condition and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In order to provide information on the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of T2DM, we analyzed the transcriptional expression patterns exhibited by peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from patients with T2DM compared to non-diabetic subjects, by investigating several biological processes: inflammatory and immune responses, responses to oxidative stress and hypoxia, fatty acid processing, and DNA repair. PBMCs were obtained from 20 T2DM patients and eight non-diabetic subjects. Total RNA was hybridized to Agilent whole human genome 4x44K one-color oligo-microarray. Microarray data were analyzed using the GeneSpring GX 11.0 software (Agilent). We used BRB-ArrayTools software (gene set analysis - GSA) to investigate significant gene sets and the Genomica tool to study a possible influence of clinical features on gene expression profiles. We showed that PBMCs from T2DM patients presented significant changes in gene expression, exhibiting 1320 differentially expressed genes compared to the control group. A great number of genes were involved in biological processes implicated in the pathogenesis of T2DM. Among the genes with high fold-change values, the up-regulated ones were associated with fatty acid metabolism and protection against lipid-induced oxidative stress, while the down-regulated ones were implicated in the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines production and DNA repair. Moreover, we identified two significant signaling pathways: adipocytokine, related to insulin resistance; and ceramide, related to oxidative stress and induction of apoptosis. In addition, expression profiles were not influenced by patient features, such as age, gender, obesity, pre/post-menopause age, neuropathy, glycemia, and HbA(1c) percentage. Hence, by studying expression profiles of PBMCs, we provided quantitative and qualitative differences and similarities between T2DM patients and non-diabetic individuals, contributing with new perspectives for a better understanding of the disease. The analysis of spatial relations among objects in an image is an important vision problem that involves both shape analysis and structural pattern recognition. In this paper, we propose a new approach to characterize the spatial relation along, an important feature of spatial configurations in space that has been overlooked in the literature up to now. We propose a mathematical definition of the degree to which an object A is along an object B, based on the region between A and B and a degree of elongatedness of this region. In order to better fit the perceptual meaning of the relation, distance information is included as well. In order to cover a more wide range of potential applications, both the crisp and fuzzy cases are considered. In the crisp case, the objects are represented in terms of 2D regions or ID contours, and the definition of the alongness between them is derived from a visibility notion and from the region between the objects. However, the computational complexity of this approach leads us to the proposition of a new model to calculate the between region using the convex hull of the contours. On the fuzzy side, the region-based approach is extended. Experimental results obtained using synthetic shapes and brain structures in medical imaging corroborate the proposed model and the derived measures of alongness, thus showing that they agree with the common sense. Abstract Background Regardless the regulatory function of microRNAs (miRNA), their differential expression pattern has been used to define miRNA signatures and to disclose disease biomarkers. To address the question of whether patients presenting the different types of diabetes mellitus could be distinguished on the basis of their miRNA and mRNA expression profiling, we obtained peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) RNAs from 7 type 1 (T1D), 7 type 2 (T2D), and 6 gestational diabetes (GDM) patients, which were hybridized to Agilent miRNA and mRNA microarrays. Data quantification and quality control were obtained using the Feature Extraction software, and data distribution was normalized using quantile function implemented in the Aroma light package. Differentially expressed miRNAs/mRNAs were identified using Rank products, comparing T1DxGDM, T2DxGDM and T1DxT2D. Hierarchical clustering was performed using the average linkage criterion with Pearson uncentered distance as metrics. Results The use of the same microarrays platform permitted the identification of sets of shared or specific miRNAs/mRNA interaction for each type of diabetes. Nine miRNAs (hsa-miR-126, hsa-miR-1307, hsa-miR-142-3p, hsa-miR-142-5p, hsa-miR-144, hsa-miR-199a-5p, hsa-miR-27a, hsa-miR-29b, and hsa-miR-342-3p) were shared among T1D, T2D and GDM, and additional specific miRNAs were identified for T1D (20 miRNAs), T2D (14) and GDM (19) patients. ROC curves allowed the identification of specific and relevant (greater AUC values) miRNAs for each type of diabetes, including: i) hsa-miR-1274a, hsa-miR-1274b and hsa-let-7f for T1D; ii) hsa-miR-222, hsa-miR-30e and hsa-miR-140-3p for T2D, and iii) hsa-miR-181a and hsa-miR-1268 for GDM. Many of these miRNAs targeted mRNAs associated with diabetes pathogenesis. Conclusions These results indicate that PBMC can be used as reporter cells to characterize the miRNA expression profiling disclosed by the different diabetes mellitus manifestations. Shared miRNAs may characterize diabetes as a metabolic and inflammatory disorder, whereas specific miRNAs may represent biological markers for each type of diabetes, deserving further attention.

Trillas et al. (1999, Soft computing, 3 (4), 197–199) and Trillas and Cubillo (1999, On non-contradictory input/output couples in Zadeh's CRI proceeding, 28–32) introduced the study of contradiction in the framework of fuzzy logic because of the significance of avoiding contradictory outputs in inference processes. Later, the study of contradiction in the framework of Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy sets (A-IFSs) was initiated by Cubillo and Castiñeira (2004, Contradiction in intuitionistic fuzzy sets proceeding, 2180–2186). The axiomatic definition of contradiction measure was stated in Castiñeira and Cubillo (2009, International journal of intelligent systems, 24, 863–888). Likewise, the concept of continuity of these measures was formalized through several axioms. To be precise, they defined continuity when the sets ‘are increasing’, denominated continuity from below, and continuity when the sets ‘are decreasing’, or continuity from above. The aim of this paper is to provide some geometrical construction methods for obtaining contradiction measures in the framework of A-IFSs and to study what continuity properties these measures satisfy. Furthermore, we show the geometrical interpretations motivating the measures.

We are conducting a genome scan at an average resolution of 10 centimorgans (cM) for type 2 diabetes susceptibility genes in 716 affected sib pairs from 477 Finnish families. To date, our best evidence for linkage is on chromosome 20 with potentially separable peaks located on both the long and short arms. The unweighted multipoint maximum logarithm of odds score (MLS) was 3.08 on 20p (location, x̂ = 19.5 cM) under an additive model, whereas the weighted MLS was 2.06 on 20q (x̂ = 57 cM, recurrence risk, λ̂s = 1.25, P = 0.009). Weighted logarithm of odds scores of 2.00 (x̂ = 69.5 cM, P = 0.010) and 1.92 (x̂ = 18.5 cM, P = 0.013) were also observed. Ordered subset analyses based on sibships with extreme mean values of diabetes-related quantitative traits yielded sets of families who contributed disproportionately to the peaks. Two-hour glucose levels in offspring of diabetic individuals gave a MLS of 2.12 (P = 0.0018) at 9.5 cM. Evidence from this and other studies suggests at least two diabetes-susceptibility genes on chromosome 20. We have also screened the gene for maturity-onset diabetes of the young 1, hepatic nuclear factor 4-a (HNF-4α) in 64 affected sibships with evidence for high chromosomal sharing at its location on chromosome 20q. We found no evidence that sequence changes in this gene accounted for the linkage results we observed.
