This study attempts to investigate the school administration in the Department of Education of Rio Grande de Norte, in the period 1924 to 1928, in the context of conservative modernization in its management, implemented by Nestor Lima dos Santos. Addresses the trends of administrative Nestor Santos Lima and sequence of these variables so that we can correlate and monitor the development of various economic, social, cultural and political, to show how influenced and even determined the direction of education, not only the state of RN, but throughout the country. For this purpose, it is the recapitulation of the history of life, experiences of work and travel reports of this important figure, including administrative concepts, aiming to identify the school administration, introduced by him in the 1920s, as those who received influence of characters that included the social and historical context of the time, reconstituting the ways following the education. It was developed by Nestor shares in Lima on the administration of public schools, their way of management, and can see how was the process of modernization of education in Rio Grande do Norte state and how it followed the rapid changes, experienced by Brazil, during this period. Show up on the design aspects of modernizing Nestor Lima in the Department of Education, the Director General of Administrative Acts, the internal record of school groups, Isolated Schools, Schools rudimentary and the newly created Board of Education, highlighting the Internal Rules of Council but the General Regulations of the Department of Education. This work also highlights the proposed administrative Nestor of Lima, while educational model of an operating system of the organization, training and education, which is present in the area of production of discourse, through body practice, characteristic of the record established levels of policy development and implementation of educational instruction in all state. O presente ensaio toma como objeto de análise uma série de descrições do Rio de Janeiro colonial extraídas de narrativas de viagem escritas por europeus que passaram pela cidade entre os séculos XVII e XVIII. Para além de dar a conhecer a perspectiva que esses visitantes deixaram da urbe e de seus habitantes, seu objetivo é pôr em discussão o papel que os relatos de viagem desempenharam no processo de construção da imagem que o europeu da época tinha do brasileiro e, sobretudo, o papel que posteriormente desempenharam no processo de construção da imagem que o brasileiro, a partir do século XIX, passou a ter de si próprio e do seu país.

Until recently the role of the public drinking house has been approached from elitist, folkloric and anecdotal perspectives. The work of a new generation of social historians, however, has raised the tavern’s profile in the academic consciousness and confirmed its position within the mainstream of social and cultural history. It is now recognized that an understanding of the centrality of public drinking to the development of both elite and popular culture is vital to studies of social behaviour. The study of taverns has also been at the forefront of emerging interest in the history of consumption and material culture, and has contributed to a richer understanding of economic history. Constructions of gender and identity are also visible through research into the patterns of behaviour and discourse in and around the public house. This four-volume reset edition presents a wide-ranging collection of primary sources which uncover the language and behaviour of local and state authorities, of peasants and town-dwellers, and of drinking companions and irate wives. The documents are translated and set in their social and historical context, providing a multidisciplinary collection that will be of great importance to scholars of all areas of social and cultural history of the early modern period. The vast majority of this material is published here for the first time, ensuring that the collection will open up new avenues of research. Volume 1 draws heavily from the Parisian police archives and includes inspectors’ reports, complaints by the general public and details of court cases to build a picture of drinking in early modern France. Volumes 2 and 3 address public drinking in the Holy Roman Empire through a variety of chronicles, civic ordinances, court records, travel reports and surveys of public houses. Volume 4 locates taverns within a broader analysis of America’s public houses, drawing on visual material as well as journal entries, business reports and newspaper articles. Each volume is accompanied by editorial introductions and is annotated to provide readers with a high-quality resource of scholarly material.

Rosalía L. de Flichman (1908-1992) es conocida en Mendoza sobre todo por su labor pictórica, la que creció y evolucionó desde la década de 1950, tanto en la difusión alcanzada por sus obras, como en los nuevos y diversos estilos transitados por la artista. También su nombre apareció en relatos de viaje a lejanos países publicados en diarios y revistas locales. En 1987 publicó el texto Rojos y blancos, Ucrania, que pertenece por su temática a la Literatura de Inmigración. En el libro, la autora recupera algunos recuerdos de su infancia en Ucrania, narra la huida familiar hacia el Oeste de Europa por causa de los pogromos de zaristas y bolcheviques y, por último, concluye con el viaje y la llegada a la Argentina en 1922. La perspectiva femenina del relato, su entrecruzamiento con la etapa vital por la que atraviesa la protagonista, así como la utilización del color y la luz otorgan a Rojos y blancos. Ucrania un valor literario más allá del puramente testimonial, que sin dudas enriquece la Literatura de Inmigración argentina y, dentro de ella, las letras femeninas de escritoras de origen judío.

Se trata de un primer acercamiento a una posible teoría de la "Imagología regional", aplicada a la imagen de Mendoza obtenida a través de viajeros europeos del siglo XIX A partir de la regionalización de la literatura de viaje propiciada por los historiadores Samuel Trifilo y Edmundo Correas para el contexto mendocino, se desarrolla la perspectiva de una imagen de lo cultural, como contracara de la reducción a la motivación básicamente ideológica de los viajeros sustentada por Mary Louise Pratt.. El análisis de una serie de relatos de viaje a Mendoza permite distinguir para la primera mitad del siglo XIX entre estereotipos positivos (así en Haigh) y negativos (así en Darwin) como "imágenes residuales" (Zamorano de Montiel) referidas a la percepción de lo cultural, tanto puntuales como integradas en una "relación jerarquizada" (Pageaux). Ya en la segunda mitad de siglo se impone una documentación diferenciada y hasta estadística de la vida cultural en Mendoza, que desemboca en el entorno del 1900 en el estereotipo de un asombroso progreso argentino, registrado también en Mendoza.

The identification of the presence of active signaling between astrocytes and neurons in a process termed gliotransmission has caused a paradigm shift in our thinking about brain function. However, we are still in the early days of the conceptualization of how astrocytes influence synapses, neurons, networks, and ultimately behavior. In this Perspective, our goal is to identify emerging principles governing gliotransmission and consider the specific properties of this process that endow the astrocyte with unique functions in brain signal integration. We develop and present hypotheses aimed at reconciling confounding reports and define open questions to provide a conceptual framework for future studies. We propose that astrocytes mainly signal through high-affinity slowly desensitizing receptors to modulate neurons and perform integration in spatiotemporal domains complementary to those of neurons.

The thesis examines the phenomenon most commonly known as “ayahuasca tourism” – i.e. the practice of westerners traveling to South America and partaking in ceremonies in which a powerful entheogenic brew, ayahuasca, is consumed. While this popular phenomenon has been steadily increasing during the last decades, it has, however, been insufficiently studied by scholars. An important question which has not been properly addressed in earlier studies is how ayahuasca tourism relates to the wider occurrence of travel and how it should be perceived with reference to the theoretical frameworks on the subject of travel. Drawing on theories regarding pilgrimage and tourism, the main purpose of this thesis is to examine the relationship between ayahuasca tourism and the broader spectrum of travel. In particular, the study tests the designations “pilgrimage”, “religious tourism” and “spiritual tourism” with reference to ayahuasca tourism. Utilizing earlier literature as well as ayahuasca tourists‟ reports obtained from an Internet forum as a basis for analysis, I search for a suitable terminology to be used for the phenomenon. The study lays special emphasis on the protagonists‟ motivations, experiences and outcomes in order to take note of various aspects of the wide-ranging occurrence of ayahuasca tourism. Key findings indicate that ayahuasca tourism is best understood as a combination of pilgrimage and tourism. On the basis of the analysis I argue that ayahuasca tourism should be labeled as “pilgrimage” and/or “spiritual tourism”, and the tourists respectively as “pilgrims” and/or “spiritual tourists”. The category of “religious tourism/tourist”, on the other hand, turns out to be an inappropriate designation when describing the phenomenon. In general, through my study I show that the results are consistent with the present trend in the study of travel to perceive pilgrimage and tourism as theoretically similar phenomena. The study of ayahuasca tourism serves thus as living proof of contemporary travel, in which the categories of pilgrimage and tourism are often indistinguishable. I suggest that ayahuasca tourism is by no means exceptional on this point, but can rather be used as an illustration of modern travel forms on a general level. Thus, the present study does not only add to the research of ayahuasca tourism, but also provides additional insights into the study of travel.
