CAT Detect (Computer Activity Timeline Detection) : a tool for detecting inconsistency in computer activity timelines

The construction of timelines of computer activity is a part of many digital investigations. These timelines of events are composed of traces of historical activity drawn from system logs and potentially from evidence of events found in the computer file system. A potential problem with the use of such information is that some of it may be inconsistent and contradictory thus compromising its value. This work introduces a software tool (CAT Detect) for the detection of inconsistency within timelines of computer activity. We examine the impact of deliberate tampering through experiments conducted with our prototype software tool. Based on the results of these experiments, we discuss techniques which can be employed to deal with such temporal inconsistencies.

Scholarly chronographics: can a timeline be useful in historiography?

Our paper is concerned with the visualisation of historical events and artefacts in the context of time. It arises from a project bringing together expertise in visualisation, historiography and software engineering. The work is the result of an extended enquiry over several years which has included investigation of the prior history of such chronographics and their grounding in the temporal ontology of the Enlightenment. Timelines - visual, spatial presentations of chronology - are generally regarded as being too simple, perhaps too childish, to be worthy of academic attention, yet such chronographics should be capable of supporting sophisticated thinking about history and historiography, especially if they take full advantage of the capabilities of digital technologies. They should enable even professional academic historians to 'make sense' of history in new ways, allowing them insights they would not otherwise have achieved. In our paper we highlight key findings from the history of such representations, principally from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and show how, in a project to develop new digital chronographics for collections of cultural objects and events, we have explored new implementations of the important ideas we have extracted about timewise presentation and interaction. This includes the representation of uncertainty, of relations between events, and the epistemology of time as a 'space' for history. We present developed examples, in particular a chronographic presentation of a large database of works by a single author, a composer, and discuss the extent to which our ambitions for chronographics have been realised in practice. A forma do tempo : a timeline interativa como meio de visualização temporal

This thesis takes a theoretical and practical approach to data visualization, focusing in particular on interactive timelines as a means to mapping historical/cultural narratives. It seeks to understand how timelines can efficiently communicate a historical narrative, enhancing the topic’s comprehension whilst relating it to the surrounding context. For this purpose, an interactive timeline on Design in Portugal from 1900 to present, was conceptualized and developed. The research adopted a descriptive methodology. The theoretical framework depicts the basic concepts, models and taxonomies associated to timelines, which derive from the main studies available on the matter. From this, a model for the analysis of three case studies – Idea Line (2002), The Path of Protest (2011) and British History Timeline (2006) – was proposed. The selection criteria shows that they refer to interactive timelines depicting a historical narrative, in addition to being as heterogeneous as possible with respect to the themes presented and conveyed purposes. The comparative analysis produced a set of thoughts, conclusions and principles, subsequently considered and applied in the development of the timeline presented. The results of this study point to the decisive role of visual setup of the time axis and user tasks in the interpretation of information. The effective implementation of the timeline Design in Portugal: from 1900 to present, contributes to the study of timelines as information devices with its own characteristics and capabilities, promotes associated research and theoretical systematization and, on a pragmatic note, helps creating the basis for the gathering, compilation and presentation of relevant information on design in Portugal, providing the academic and professional community with an effective tool for referring and learning

Timeline generation with social attention

Timeline generation is an important research task which can help users to have a quick understanding of the overall evolution of any given topic. It thus attracts much attention from research communities in recent years. Nevertheless, existing work on timeline generation often ignores an important factor, the attention attracted to topics of interest (hereafter termed "social attention"). Without taking into consideration social attention, the generated timelines may not reflect users' collective interests. In this paper, we study how to incorporate social attention in the generation of timeline summaries. In particular, for a given topic, we capture social attention by learning users' collective interests in the form of word distributions from Twitter, which are subsequently incorporated into a unified framework for timeline summary generation. We construct four evaluation sets over six diverse topics. We demonstrate that our proposed approach is able to generate both informative and interesting timelines. Our work sheds light on the feasibility of incorporating social attention into traditional text mining tasks. Copyright © 2013 ACM.
