We show that the Einstein-Hilbert, the Einstein-Palatini, and the Holst actions can be derived from the Quadratic Spinor Lagrangian (QSL), when the three classes of Dirac spinor fields, under Lounesto spinor field classification, are considered. To each one of these classes, there corresponds an unique kind of action for a covariant gravity theory. In other words, it is shown to exist a one-to-one correspondence between the three classes of non-equivalent solutions of the Dirac equation, and Einstein-Hilbert, Einstein-Palatini, and Holst actions. Furthermore, it arises naturally, from Lounesto spinor field classification, that any other class of spinor field-Weyl, Majorana, flagpole, or flag-dipole spinor fields-yields a trivial (zero) QSL, up to a boundary term. To investigate this boundary term, we do not impose any constraint on the Dirac spinor field, and consequently we obtain new terms in the boundary component of the QSL. In the particular case of a teleparallel connection, an axial torsion one-form current density is obtained. New terms are also obtained in the corresponding Hamiltonian formalism. We then discuss how these new terms could shed new light on more general investigations.

‘MBA fever’ in China needs to be understood in the wider context of forces driving structural change in China’s relation to the global knowledge economy. The rise of a ‘new middle class’ in China is connected to the new claims for cultural leadership of an emergent ‘creative class’, which generates new issues about the relevance of the MBA in China, in terms of its relevance to Chinese economic circumstances, and its flexibility and capacity to respond to accumulation strategies that emphasise innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

We analyze the regional distribution of different categories of creative individuals in Germany. Generally, the share of creative people is higher in cities as compared to the rural area The freelancing artists are a kind of exception in this respect; they constitute a relatively high share of the population in some rural area A high share of creative people in a region can be explained by a high level of public provisions and a high share of foreign born population, which can be regarded as an indicator of the “openness” in the local milieu. Good employment opportunities have only a relatively weak impact. Regions with a high share of creatives tend to have an above average level of new business formation, a high level of innovation and a relatively high share of employees in high-tech industries.

Abstract: The paper investigates the geographical mobility of creative workers in China, focusing on the authors’ survey of workers in the animation industry. More specifically, the authors use the Reilly-Converse model and GIS tools to probe the locational choices of Chinese animation workers in Beijing and Shanghai by analyzing such factors of spatial attractiveness as home town, place of residence, and university from which the worker graduated. The paper compares the creative milieus in Beijing and Shanghai, and demonstrates that the “personal trajectory” of human capital is a key determinant of occupational location. The results of the authors’ survey highlight the limitations of Richard Florida’s 3T theory in the Chinese context.

Objective. The heritability of RA has been estimated to be ∼55%, of which the MHC contributes about one-third. HLA-DRB1 alleles are strongly associated with RA, but it is likely that significant non-DRB1 MHC genetic susceptibility factors are involved. Previously, we identified two three-marker haplotypes in a 106-kb region in the MHC class III region immediately centromeric to TNF, which are strongly associated with RA on HLA-DRB1*0404 haplotypes. In the present study, we aimed to refine these associations further using a combination of genotyping and gene expression studies. Methods. Thirty-nine nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were genotyped in 95 DRB1*0404 carrying unrelated RA cases, 125 DRB1*0404 - carrying healthy controls and 87 parent-case trio RA families in which the affected child carried HLA-DRB1*04. Quantitative RT-PCR was used to assess the expression of the positional candidate MHC class III genes APOM, BAT2, BAT3, BAT4, BAT5, AIF1, C6orf47, CSNK2β and LY6G5C, and the housekeeper genes, hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) and β2-microglobulin (B2M) in 31 RA cases and 21 ethnically, age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Synovial membrane specimens from RA, PsA and OA cases were stained by an indirect immunoperoxidase technique using a mouse-anti-human AIF1 monoclonal antibody. Results. Association was observed between RA and single markers or two marker haplotypes involving AIF1, BAT3 and CSNK. AIF1 was also significantly overexpressed in RA mononuclear cells (1.5- to 1.9-fold difference, P = 0.02 vs HPRT, P = 0.002 vs B2M). AIF1 protein was clearly expressed by synovial macrophages in all the inflammatory synovial samples in contrast to the non-inflammatory OA samples. Conclusions. The results of the genotyping and expression studies presented here suggest a role for AIF1 in both the aetiology and pathogenesis of RA.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) on chromosome 6 is associated with susceptibility to more common diseases than any other region of the human genome, including almost all disorders classified as autoimmune. In type 1 diabetes the major genetic susceptibility determinants have been mapped to the MHC class II genes HLA-DQB1 and HLA-DRB1 (refs 1–3), but these genes cannot completely explain the association between type 1 diabetes and the MHC region4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11. Owing to the region's extreme gene density, the multiplicity of disease-associated alleles, strong associations between alleles, limited genotyping capability, and inadequate statistical approaches and sample sizes, which, and how many, loci within the MHC determine susceptibility remains unclear. Here, in several large type 1 diabetes data sets, we analyse a combined total of 1,729 polymorphisms, and apply statistical methods—recursive partitioning and regression...

Let X be a normal projective threefold over a field of characteristic zero and vertical bar L vertical bar be a base-point free, ample linear system on X. Under suitable hypotheses on (X, vertical bar L vertical bar), we prove that for a very general member Y is an element of vertical bar L vertical bar, the restriction map on divisor class groups Cl(X) -> Cl(Y) is an isomorphism. In particular, we are able to recover the classical Noether-Lefschetz theorem, that a very general hypersurface X subset of P-C(3) of degree >= 4 has Pic(X) congruent to Z.

We have investigated quadratic nonlinearity (beta(HRS)) and linear and circular depolarization ratios (D and D', respectively) of a series of 1:1 complexes of tropyliumtetrafluoroborate as a cation and methyl-substituted benzenes as pi-donors by making polarization resolved hyper-Rayleigh scattering measurements in solution. The measured D and D' values are much lower than the values expected from a typical sandwich or a T-shaped geometry of a complex. In the cation-pi complexes studied here, the D value varies from 1.36 to 1.46 and D' from 1.62 to 1.72 depending on the number of methyl substitutions on the benzene ring. In order to probe it further, beta, D and D' were computed using the Zerner intermediate neglect of differential overlap-correction vector self-consistent reaction field technique including single and double configuration interactions in the absence and presence of BF4- anion. In the absence of the anion, the calculated value of D varies from 4.20 to 4.60 and that of D' from 2.45 to 2.72 which disagree with experimental values. However, by arranging three cation-pi BF4- complexes in a trigonal symmetry, the computed values are brought to agreement with experiments. When such an arrangement was not considered, the calculated beta values were lower than the experimental values by more than a factor of two. This unprecedented influence of the otherwise ``unimportant'' anion in solution on the beta value and depolarization ratios of these cation-pi complexes is highlighted and emphasized in this paper. The thermal behaviour and ion-transport properties of a comb polymer electrolyte CP350/LiSCN based on methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer with oligo-oxyethylene side chains were studied by means of DSC and ac impedance method. The two glass transition temperatures which can be attributed to side chains and main chains respectively were found to increase with increasing salt concentration. Conductivities which displayed non-Arrhenius behaviour were analyzed by using Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation and interpreted on the basis of the configurational entropy model derived by Gibbs and coworkers. The optimum ionic conductivity at 25 degrees C achieved was 2.19x10(-5)S/cm.

A comb polymer (CP350) with oligo-oxyethylene side chains of the type -(CH2CH2O)(7)CH3 was prepared from methyl vinyl ether/maleic anhydride copolymer and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether. The polymer can dissolve LiNO3 salt to form homogeneous amorphous polymer electrolyte. This electrolyte system was first found to have two class glass transitions, and the two T(g)s were observed to increase with increasing salt content. The ionic conduction was measured by using the complex impedance method, and conductivities were investigated as functions of temperature and salt concentration. At 25 degrees C, the ionic conductivity maximum of this system can get to 3.72 X 10(-5) S/cm at the [Li]/ [EO] ratio of 0.057. The appearance of the conductivity maximum has been interpreted as being due to the effect of T-g and the so called physical crosslinks. The temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity displaying non-Arrhenius behaviour can be analyzed using the Vogel-Tammann-Fulcher equation and interpreted on the basis of the configurational entropy model.

To analyse the impact of lack of MHC class II expression on the composition of the peripheral T-cell compartment in man, the expression characteristics of several membrane antigens were examined on peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) and cultured T cells derived from an MHC-class-II-deficient patient. No MHC class II expression could be detected on either PBL or activated T cells. Moreover, the expression of MHC class I was reduced both on PBL and in vitro activated T cells compared to the healthy control. However, the reduced expression of CD26 observed on the PBL of the patient was restored after in vitro expansion. Despite the presumably class-II-deficient thymic environment, a distinct but reduced single CD4+ T-cell population was observed in the PBL of the patient. After in vitro expansion, the percentage of CD4+ cells dropped even further, most likely due to a proliferative disadvantage, compared to the single CD8+ T-cell population. However, proliferation analysis showed that T-cell activation via the TcR/CD3 pathway is not affected by the MHC class II deficiency.
