Terbium ions were successfully incorporated in nano-sized zinc oxide particles with a doping concentration up to 3% by using a wet chemical route. Four narrow emission peaks of Tb3+ ions and a broad emission band of the surface states on ZnO nano-hosts were observed for all Tb-doped nanoparticles. Relaxation of carriers from excited states of ZnO hosts to rare earth (RE) dopants is disclosed by the fact that the emission intensity of Tb3+ centers increases with increased Tb content at the expense of the emission from surface defect states in ZnO matrix. Infrared-to-visible frequency upconversion through cooperative energy-transfer and thermal effects in Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped tellurite glasses excited at 1.064 mum is investigated. Bright luminescence emission around 485, 550, 590, 625 and 65 nm, identified as due to the D-5(4) --> F-7(J) (J= 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2) transitions of the terbium ions, respectively, was recorded. The excitation of the D-5(4) emitting level of the Tb3+ ions is assigned to cooperative energy-transfer from pairs of ytterbium ions.. The effect of temperature on the upconversion process was examined and the results revealed a fourfold upconversion enhancement in the 300-500 K interval. The enhancement of the upconversion process is due to the temperature dependence of the Yb3+-sensitizer absorption cross-section under anti-Stokes excitation. A rate-equation. model using multiphonon-assisted absorption for the ytterbium excitation combined with the energy migration effect between Yb-Yb pair, and Tb3+ ground-state depopulation via multiphonon excitation of the F-7(J) excited states describes quite well the experimental results. Cooperative energy transfer upconversion luminescence is investigated in Tb(3+)/Yb(3+)-codoped PbGeO(3)-PbF(2)-CdF(2) glass-ceramic and its precursor glass under resonant and off resonance infrared excitation. Bright UV-visible emission signals around 384, 415, 438 nm, and 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm are identified as due to the (5)D(3)((5)G(6))->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4) and (5)D(4)->(7)F(1) (J=6,5,4,3) transitions, respectively, and readily observed. The results indicate that cooperative energy transfer between ytterbium and terbium. ions followed by excited state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms involved. Comparison of the upconversion process in a glass-ceramic sample and its glassy precursor revealed that the former present much higher upconversion efficiency. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, temperature, and doping content is also examined.

Luminescent hybrid Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films of polyoxometaloeuropate (Na9EuW10O36) were successfully prepared. Low-angle X-ray diffraction data demonstrate that the LB films have a well-defined lamellar structure. The hybrid LB films can exhibit strong luminescence under UV irradiation, which can be observed by the human eye. The effect of the lipid ocradecylamine, on the luminescence of polyoxometaloeuropate was discussed and compared with that of the lipid dimethyldioctadecylammonium bromide. It is found that the intensity ratio for the D-5(0) --> F-7(2) transition to the D-5(0) --> F-7(1) transition of europium in two kinds of LB films is quite different. The X-ray photoelectron spectra data verify that there exist different interactions between two lipids and the inorganic polyanions. The different interactions between two lipids and the polyanions may result in the distortion of the site symmetry for europium to a different extent, which may account for the difference in luminescent behavior between the two kinds of LB films.

Europium (II) and europium (III) have been observed in MMgF(4):xEu, yTb (M=Ca, Sr, Ba) phosphors using their typical photoluminescence spectra when are synthesized in Ar or an Ar/H-2 stream. The valence state of Eu is influenced by terbium. It is notable that the intensities of the electron spin resonance peaks corresponding to Eu2+ change in a regular way when terbium ions are incorporated which can be explained by an electron transfer mechanism.

In this paper. the interaction of tripositive terbium ions (Tb3+) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) has been investigated in the presence of some alkaline earth metals and citric acid (Cit) by using fluorescence spectroscopy. The results show that Tb-31. BSA and Cit can form ternary complex BSA . Tb-2. Cit(4) in mu =0.1 mol/l NaCl. pH6.3 hexamethylenetetramine buffer. Other tare earths are able to compete for the same binding site in BSA with Tb3+-. The sequence of con, petition is Eu3+>Pr3+>Yb3+>Gd3+>La3+>Ca2+ and Mg2+ cannot replace Tb bound to BSA.

Terbium (Tb) doped LaMgAl(11)O(19) phosphors have been prepared by the combustion of corresponding metal nitrates (oxidizer) and urea (fuel) at furnace temperature as low as 500 C Combustion synthesized powder phosphor was characterized by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques LaMgAl(11)O(19) doped with trivalent terbium ions emit weakly in blue and orange light region and strongly in green light region when excited by the ultraviolet light of 261 nm Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to study the defect centres Induced in the phosphor by gamma irradiation and also to identify the defect centres responsible for the thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) process Room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of at least two defect centres One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-values g(parallel to) = 2 0417 and g(perpendicular to) = 2 0041 is identified as O(2)(-) ion while centre II with an axially symmetric g-tensor with principal values g(parallel to) = 19698 and g(perpendicular to) = 1 9653 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy) An additional defect centre is observed during thermal annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) The F centre and also the F+ centre appear to correlate with the observed high temperature TSL peak in LaMgAl(11)O(19) Tb phosphor (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS All rights reserved

Energy-transfer excited upconversion luminescence in Ho3+/Yb3+- and Tb3+/Yb3+ -codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass and glass-ceramic under infrared excitation is investigated. In Ho3+/Yb3+-codoped samples, green (545 nm), red (652 nm), and near-infrared (754 nm) upconversion emission corresponding to the S-5(2) (F-5(4)) -> I-5(8), F-5(5) -> I-5(8), and S-5(2)(F-5(4)) -> I-5(7) transitions, respectively, was observed. Blue (490 nm) emission assigned to the F-5(2,3) -> I-5(8) transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+-codoped system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the D-5(3)((5)G(6)) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4) and D-5(4) -> F-7(J)(J = 6, 5, 4, 3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies. The dependence of the upconversion emission upon pump power, and doping contents was also examined. The results indicated that successive energy-transfer between ytterbium and holmium ions and cooperative energy-transfer between ytterbium and terbium ions followed by excited-state absorption are the dominant upconversion excitation mechanisms herein involved. The viability of using the samples for three-dimensional solid-state color displays is also discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Trivalent europium and terbium ions have ionic radii similar to that of Ca2+. So they are employed as probes of calcium binding sites in biological molecules. These ions exhibit very useful spectroscopic characteristics, chiefly a pronounced luminescence. In protein bound lanthanide, visible light emission from the lanthanide excited states can be observed when UV light is absorbed by aromatic amino acids. Subsequently, the energy is transferred to the lanthanide ion. The present work was carried out to define the binding sites of Eu3+ and Tb3+ in complexes with the aromatic amino acids L-phenylalanine and L-tryptophan. The techniques utilized were infrared and C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. It was found that trivalent europium and terbium interact with the carboxylate group of both amino acids. With L-tryptophan, the imino group of the indole ring is also involved representing another coordination site.

In this report we investigate the optical properties and energy-transfer upconversion luminescence of Ho3+- and Tb3+/Yb 3+-codoped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2 glass-ceramic under infrared excitation. In Ho3+/Yb 3+-codoped sample, green(545 nm), red(652 nm), and near-infrared(754 nm) upconversion luminescence corresponding to the 4S 2(5F4) → 5I8, 5F5 → 5I8, and 4S2(5F4) → 5I 7, respectively, was readly observed. Blue(490 nm) signals assigned to the 5F2,3 → 5I8 transition was also detected. In the Tb3+/Yb3+ system, bright UV-visible emission around 384, 415, 438, 473-490, 545, 587, and 623 nm, identified as due to the 5D3(5G6) → 7FJ(J=6,5,4) and 5D4→ 7FJ(J=6,5,4,3) transitions, was measured. The comparison of the upconversion process in glass ceramic and its glassy precursor revealed that the former samples present much higher upconversion efficiencies.
