Ethyl carbamate (EC) is a common substance in fermented foods and drinks, and its quantification is important because of its carcinogenic nature and its usually presence in alcoholic beverages. The present work involved the development and validation of an analytical method for the evaluation of EC in cachaça by HPLC-FLD after previous derivatization with xanthydrol. The method presented a mean recovery of 94.88%, an intra-day precision of 4.19% (30.0 μg L−1) and 3.32% (75.0 μg L−1), a coefficient of determination (r2) equal to 0.9985, and limits of detection and quantification equal to 6.39 and 21.32 μg L−1, respectively. The results show that the analytical method is accurate, reproducible and linear over the concentration range from 5.0 to 160 μg of EC per litre. The method was applied to the analysis of EC in cachaça, the analyses being rapid and efficient.

The demand for fresh water production is growing day by day with the increase in world population and with industrial growth. Use of desalination technology is increasing to meet this demand. Among desalination technologies, solar stills require low maintenance and are readily affordable; however their productivity is limited. This paper aims to give a detailed review about the various types of solar stills, covering passive and active designs, single- and multi-effect types, and the various modifications for improved productivity including reflectors, heat storage, fins, collectors, condensers, and mechanisms for enhancing heat and mass transfer. Photovoltaic-thermal and greenhouse type solar stills are also covered. Material advances in the area of phase change materials and nanocomposites are very promising to enhance further performance; future research should be carried out in these and other areas for the greater uptake of solar still technology.

The hedonic level of commercial cachaças, was evaluated by consumers and by a tasters. The results of sensorial methods analyzed trough Principal Components Analysis, Hierarchical Cluster Analysis and the Pearson linear correlation indicated that the best classified cachaças were produced in copper stills and aged in oak casks. By contrast the worst classified exhibited as the main features be not aged and high alcohol percentage. The index of preference is positively correlated with the intensity of yellow color, wood flavor, sweetness and fruit aroma. There is a negative preference correlation with the acidity, the taste of alcohol and bitterness.

One hundred fifteen cachaça samples derived from distillation in copper stills (73) or in stainless steels (42) were analyzed for thirty five itens by chromatography and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The analytical data were treated through Factor Analysis (FA), Partial Least Square Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) and Quadratic Discriminant Analysis (QDA). The FA explained 66.0% of the database variance. PLS-DA showed that it is possible to distinguish between the two groups of cachaças with 52.8% of the database variance. QDA was used to build up a classification model using acetaldehyde, ethyl carbamate, isobutyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, acetic acid and formaldehyde as chemical descriptors. The model presented 91.7% of accuracy on predicting the apparatus in which unknown samples were distilled.

The concentration of 14 organic acids of 50 sugarcane spirits samples was determined by gas chromatography using flame ionization detection. The organic acids analytical quantitative profile in stills and column distilled spirits from wines obtained from the same must were compared. The comparison was also carried in "head", "heart" and "tail fractions of stills distilled spirits. The experimental data were analyzed by Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and pointed out that the distillation process (stills and column) strongly influences the lead spirits' organic acid composition and that producers' operational "cuts off" to produce "tail", "heart" and "head", fractions should be optimized.

Työn tarkoituksena on kehittää hankinnan päätöksentekoa tukeva ohutlevyosien valmistuskustannusten laskentamenetelmä toimintolaskentaan pohjautuen. Laskentamenetelmä koostuu valmistukseen kuluvan ajan laskennassa käytettävistä funktioista sekä konetuntihinnoista. Hankintatoimen päätöksistä käsitellään toimittajanvalintaa, jossa yhtenä vaihtoehtona on hankkiminen Kiinasta. Toimittajanvalinnan kriteereitä ovat tällöin hankintahinnan lisäksi kuljetuskustannukset, laatu sekä toimitusvarmuus. Myös kansainvälisen hankinnan Kiinasta erityispiirteitä käsitellään. Hankkiminen Kiinasta koetaan vielä melko ongelmallisena etenkin laadun ja toimitusvarmuuden osalta. Erityisen huomioitavaa on, että hankintahintojen alhaisuus on osakohtaista. Suurin riski hankinnan kannattavuudelle aiheutuu valuuttakursseista. Osto-organisaation yhteistyötä alihankkijoiden sekä muiden osastojen kanssa parantamalla voidaan välttää hankittavien ohutlevyosien laatuongelmia. Suomalaisten alihankkijoiden kanssa kustannuslaskentamallia avoimeen hinnoitteluun soveltamalla hankintakustannuksia voidaan alentaa.
