Spectrum narrowing of CW light was observed experimentally in optical transmission fibers with normal dispersion. The effect's theoretical interpretation as an effective self-pumping parametric amplification of the spectrum's central part is confirmed by numerical modeling. This article discusses possible approaches for optical network capacity upgrade by considering the use of different modulation formats at 40 Gb/s. First, a performance evaluation is carried out regarding tolerance to three impairments: spectral narrowing due to filter cascading, chromatic dispersion, and self-phase modulation. Next, a cost-benefit analysis is conducted, considering the specific optoelectronic components required for the optical transmitter/receiver configuration of each format.

We report unusual spectral narrowing and laser emission from polymer thin films doped with Coumarin 540 dye. The laser emission from the polymer films is found to be highly dependent upon the excitation length of the medium. Even a short length of 1.75 mm of the dye doped film gave rise to laser emission with FWHM of 0.3 nm for a pump intensity of 825 kW cm−2. The partial reflections from the broad lateral surfaces of the free standing films provided the optical feedback for the laser emission. Occurrence of well-resolved equally spaced resonant modes confirmed the effect of a Fabry–Perot-like optical cavity between the film surfaces

The fabrication and characterization of a Rhodamine 6G-doped polymer optical fiber amplifier have been carried out. Two different schemes were employed to characterize the optical fiber: the stripe illumination technique to study the fiber as a gain medium and another technique to study its performance as an amplifier. We observed a spectral narrowing from 42 to 7 nm when the pump energy was increased to 6 mJ in the stripe illumination geometry. A gain of 18 dB was obtained in the amplifier configuration. The effects of pump power and dye concentration on the performance of the fiber as an amplifier were also studied.

Organic microcavity light emitting diodes typically exhibit a blue shift of the emitting wavelength with increasing viewing angle. While the wavelength shift can be reduced with the appropriate choice of organic materials and metal mirrors, for further reduction of the emission wavelength shift it is necessary to consider a mirror whose phase shift can partly compensate the effect of the change of optical path within the cavity. In this work, we used a genetic algorithm (GA) to design an asymmetric Bragg mirror in order to minimize the emission wavelength shift with viewing angle. Based on simulation results, the use of asymmetric Bragg mirrors represents a promising way to reduce the emission wavelength shift. Detailed comparison between GA optimized and conventional Bragg mirrors in terms of resonant wavelength dependence on the viewing angle, spectral narrowing, and brightness enhancement is given. We present theory and simulations for a spectral narrowing scheme for laser diode arrays (LDAs) that employs optical feedback from a diffraction grating. We calculate the effect of the so-called smile of the LDA and show that it is possible to reduce the effect by using a cylindrical lens set at an angle to the beam. The scheme is implemented on a 19-element LDA with smile of 7.6 mu m and yields frequency narrowing from a free-running width of 2 to 0.15 nm. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theory. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

We investigate numerically and experimentally the properties of a passively mode locked quantum dot semiconductor laser under the influence of cw optical injection. We demonstrate that the waveform instability at high pumping for these devices can be overcome when one mode of the device is locked to the injected master laser and additionally show spectral narrowing and tunability. Experimental and numerical analyses demonstrate that the stable locking boundaries are similar to these obtained for optical injection in CW lasers. © 2010 American Institute of Physics.

We perform characterization of the pulse shape and noise properties of quantum dot passively mode-locked lasers (PMLLs). We propose a novel method to determine the RF linewidth and timing jitter, applicable to high repetition rate PMLLs, through the dependence of modal linewidth on the mode number. Complex electric field measurements show asymmetric pulses with parabolic phase close to threshold, with the appearance of waveform instabilities at higher currents. We demonstrate that the waveform instabilities can be overcome through optical injection-locking to the continues wave (CW) master laser, leading to time-bandwidth product (TBP) improvement, spectral narrowing, and spectral tunability. We discuss the benefits of single- and dual-tone master sources and demonstrate that dual-tone optical injection can additionally improve the noise properties of the slave laser with RF linewidth reduction below instrument limits (1 kHz) and integrated timing jitter values below 300 fs. Dual-tone injection allowed slave laser repetition rate control over a 25 MHz range with reduction of all modal optical linewidths to the master source linewidth, demonstrating phase-locking of all slave modes and coherence improvement.

The spectral narrowing and selective tuning of picosecond pulse outputs from gain-switched diode laser and a four Bragg-grating fiber, were investigated. The fiber used under investigation was designed to provide spectral narrowing and multiple wavelength/temporal output. The maximum transmission out of each of the four output fibers was ∼7.5 mW, for a current of 180 mA. The results show that an output of any combination of multiple wavelengths is only produced at modulation frequencies which satisfy resonant conditions for all cavity arms simultaneously.

The simplest model for a description of the random distributed feedback (RDFB) Raman fiber laser is a power balance model describing the evolution of the intensities of the waves over the fiber length. The model predicts well the power performances of the RDFB fiber laser including the generation threshold, the output power and pump and generation wave intensity distributions along the fiber. In the present work, we extend the power balance model and modify equations in such a way that they describe now frequency dependent spectral power density instead of integral over the spectrum intensities. We calculate the generation spectrum by using the depleted pump wave longitudinal distribution derived from the conventional power balance model. We found the spectral balance model to be sufficient to account for the spectral narrowing in the RDFB laser above the threshold of the generation. © 2014 SPIE.

We study the spectral and noise properties of the fluorescence field emitted from a two-level atom driven by a beam of squeezed light. For a weak driving field we derive simple analytical formulae for the fluorescence and quadrature-noise spectra which are valid for an arbitrary bandwidth of the squeezed field. We analyse the spectra in the regime where the squeezing bandwidth is smaller or comparable to the atomic linewidth, the area where non-Markovian effects are important. We emphasize that there is a noticable difference between the fluorescence spectra for the thermal and squeezed field excitations. In both cases the spectrum can be narrower than any bandwidth involved in the process. However, as we point out for the squeezed driving field the linewidth narrowing, being much larger than in the thermal-field case, can be attributed to the squeezing of the fluctuations in the driving held. We also calculate the quadrature-noise spectrum of the emitted fluorescence, and find that for a detuned squeezed field the fluorescence spectrum does not reveal the quadrature-noise spectrum. In contrast to the fluorescence spectrum having two peaks, the quadrature-noise spectrum exhibits three peaks. We explain this difference as arising from the competiting three-photon scattering processes. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The fluorescence spectrum of a strongly driven two-level atom located inside an optical cavity damped by a narrow-bandwidth squeezed vacuum is studied. We use a dressed atom model approach, first applied to squeezed vacuum problems by Yeoman and Barnett, to derive the master equation of the system and discuss the role of the cavity and the squeezed vacuum in the narrowing of the spectral lines and the population trapping effect. We find that in the presence of a single-mode cavity the effect of squeezing on the fluorescence spectrum is more evident in the linewidths of the Rabi sidebands rather than in the linewidth of the central component. Even in the absence of squeezing, the cavity can reduce the linewidth of the central component almost to zero, whereas the Rabi sidebands can be narrowed only to some finite value. In the presence of a two-mode cavity and a two-mode squeezed vacuum the signature of squeezing is evident in the linewidths of all spectral lines. We also establish that the narrowing of the spectral lines is very sensitive to the detuning of the driving field from the atomic resonance. Moreover, we find that the population trapping effect, predicted for the broadband squeezed vacuum case, may appear in a narrow-bandwidth case only if the input squeezed modes are perfectly matched to the cavity modes and if there is non-zero squeezing at the Rabi sidebands.
