Nanoporous anatase with a thin interconnected filmlike morphology has been synthesized in a single step by coupling a nonhydrolytic condensation reaction of a Ti precursor with a hybrid sol-gel combustion reaction. The method combines the advantages of a conventional sol-gel method for the formation of porous structures with the high crystallinity of the products obtained by combustion methods to yield highly crystalline, phase-pure nanoporous anatase. The generation of pores is initiated by the formation of reverse micelles in a polymeric polycondensation product, which expand during heating, leading to larger pores. A reaction scheme involving a complex formation and nonhydrolytic polycondensation reaction with ester elimination leads to the formation of ail extended Ti-O-Ti network. The effect of process parameters, such as temperature and relative ratio of cosurfactants, on phase formation has been studied. The possibility of band gap engineering by controlled doping during synthesis and the possibility of attachment of molecular/nanoparticle sensitizers provide opportunities for easy preparation of photoanodes for solar cell applications.

EU3+ -doped Y3Al5O12 (YAG:Eu3+) phosphors were synthesized by a facile sol-gel combustion method. In this process, citric acid traps the constituent cations and reduces the diffusion length of the precursors. YAG phase is obtained through sintering at 900 degrees C for 2h. There were no intermediate phases such as YAlO3 (YAP) and Y4Al2O9 (YAM) observed. The charge transfer band of nanocrystalline phosphors shows a shift toward the high-energy side, compared with that of amorphous ones due to lower covalency of Eu-O bond for nanocrystalline phosphors. The higher concentration quenching in YAG:EU3+ nanophosphors may be caused by the confinement effect on resonant energy transfer of nanocrystalline. It also indicates that the sol-gel combustion synthesis method provides a good distribution of Eu3+ activators in YAG host. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

High-quality Ce3+-doped Y3Al5O12 (YAG:Ce3+) phosphors were synthesized by a facile sol-gel combustion method. In this sol-gel combustion process, citric acid acts as a fuel for combustion, traps the constituent cations and reduces the diffusion length of the precursors. The XRD and FT-IR results show that YAG phase can form through sintering at 900 degrees C for 2 h. This temperature is much lower than that required to synthesize YAG phase via the solid-state reaction method. There were no intermediate phases such as YAlO3 (YAP) and Y4Al2O9 (YAM) observed in the sintering process. The average grain size of the phosphors sintered at 900-1100 degrees C is about 40 nm. With the increasing of sintering temperature, the emission intensity increases due to the improved crystalline and homogeneous distribution of Ce3+ ions. A blue shift has been observed in the Ce3+ emission spectrum of YAG:Ce3+ phosphors with increasing sintering temperatures from 900 to 1200 degrees C. It can be explained that the decrease of lattice constant affects the crystal field around Ce3+ ions. The emission intensity of 0.06Ce-doped YAG phosphors is much higher than that of the 0.04Ce and 0.02Ce ones. The red-shift at higher Ce3+ concentrations may be Ce-Ce interactions or variations in the unit cell parameters between YAG:Ce3+ and YAG. It can be concluded that the sol-gel combustion synthesis method provides a good distribution of Ce3+ activators at the molecular level in YAG matrix. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Y4Al2O9:EU3+ phosphor was synthesized through a sol-gel combustion method. The Y4Al2O9 phase can form through sintering at 800 degrees C. This temperature is much lower than that required via the solid state reaction method. The average grain size of the phosphor was about 30 run. Compared with the amorphous phosphor, the charge transfer band of crystalline phosphor shows a blue shift. The emission Of Y4Al2O9:Eu3+ indicates the existence of two luminescent centers, in agreement with the crystal structure of Y4Al2O9. Higher doping concentration could be realized in Y4Al2O9 nanocrystal host lattice. This indicates that the sol-gel combustion synthesis method can increase emission intensity and quenching concentration due to a good distribution of EU3+ activators in Y4Al2O9 host. MnZn-ferrite/SiO2 nanocomposites with different silica content were successfully fabricated by a novel modified sol-gel auto-combustion method using citric acid as a chelating agent and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the source of silica matrix. The auto-combustion nature of the dried gel was studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Infrared spectra (IR), thermogravimetry (TG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) observation shows that the MnZn-ferrite particles are homogeneously dispersed in silica matrix after auto-combustion of the dried gels. The magnetic properties vary with the silica content. The transition from the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic state is observed by Mossbauer spectra measurement with the increasing silica content. Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) shows that the magnetic properties of Mn0.65Zn0.35Fe2O4/SiO2 nanocomposites strongly depend on the silica content.

The synthesis of nanocrystalline W-type hexaferrites Ba(CoxZn1-x)(2)Fe16O27 powders by sol-gel auto-combustion method has been investigated. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results reveal that the dried gel exhibits auto-combustion behavior. After combustion, pure nanocrystalline W-type hexaferrite phase starts to appear at the calcination temperature of 800 degrees C. The crystallinity and the grain size increase at higher temperature. The saturation magnetization and coercivity clearly depend on calcination temperature and Co content X.

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was first used as chelating agent and metal nitrates as precursor of ferrite in the fabrication of nanocrystalline Ni0.65Zn0.35Cu0.1Fe1.9O4 particles by the sol-gel method. The thermal decomposition process of dried gel was studied by thermogravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and infrared spectra (IR). The structural and magnetic properties of resultant particles were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Mossbauer spectroscopy. The dependence of the decomposition of dried gel, the formation of spinel structured NiZnCu ferrite, the sizes of annealed particles, the saturation magnetization and coercivity of annealed particles on annealing temperature is presented.

MgAl(2)O(4):Eu, Dy nanoparticles were prepared by citrate sol-gel method and thermally treated at 600, 700, 800 and 900 degrees C. The trivalent europium ion is partially reduced to the divalent state at 700 and 800 degrees C. Infrared spectra of the phosphors showed bands around 700 and 520 cm(-1) corresponding to the AlO(6) groups. X-ray diffraction patterns present sharp reflections of samples heated from 700 to 900 degrees C indicating the MgAl(2)O(4) spinel phase. Grain size in the range 20-30 nm were observed by measurement of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The emission spectra of the phosphors show a broadened band at 480 nm assigned to the 4f(G)5d -> 4f(7) ((8)S(7/2)) transition of Eu(2+) ion overlapped to the (4)F(9/2) -> (6)H(15/2) transition of the Dy(3+) ion. Besides, the (4)F(9/2) -> (6)H(13/2) transition (579 nm) of Dy(3+) ion is overlapped with the (5)D(0) -> (7)F(0) (578 nm) and (5)D(0) -> (7)F(1) (595 nm) transitions from the Eu(3+) ion. Excitation spectra of the sample heated at 900 degrees C monitoring the excitation at 615 nm of (5)D(0) -> (7)F(2) transition of Eu(3+) ion exhibit a broad band assigned to the O -> Eu(3+) ligand-to-metal charge-transfer states (LMCT) around 280 nm. The samples present green persistent luminescence after exposure to UV radiation. The chromaticity coordinates were obtained from the luminescence emission spectrum. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. This thesis presents a study of the mechanical properties of thin films. The main aim was to determine the properties of sol-gel derived coatings. These films are used in a range of different applications and are known to be quite porous. Very little work has been carried out in this area and in order to study the mechanical properties of sol-gel films, some of the work was carried out on magnetron sputtered metal coatings in order to validate the techniques developed in this work. The main part of the work has concentrated on the development of various bending techniques to study the elastic modulus of the thin films, including both a small scale three-point bending, as well as a novel bi-axial bending technique based on a disk resting on three supporting balls. The bending techniques involve a load being applied to the sample being tested and the bending response to this force being recorded. These experiments were carried out using an ultra micro indentation system with very sensitive force and depth recording capabilities. By analysing the result of these forces and deflections using existing theories of elasticity, the elastic modulus may be determined. In addition to the bi-axial bending study, a finite element analysis of the stress distribution in a disk during bending was carried out. The results from the bi-axial bending tests of the magnetron sputtered films was confirmed by ultra micro indentation tests, giving information of the hardness and elastic modulus of the films. It was found that while the three point bending method gave acceptable results for uncoated steel substrates, it was very susceptible to slight deformations of the substrate. Improvements were made by more careful preparation of the substrates in order to avoid deformation. However the technique still failed to give reasonable results for coated specimens. In contrast, biaxial bending gave very reliable results even for very thin films and this technique was also found to be useful for determination of the properties of sol-gel coatings. In addition, an ultra micro indentation study of the hardness and elastic modulus of sol-gel films was conducted. This study included conventionally fired films as well as films ion implanted in a range of doses. The indentation tests showed that for implantation of H+ ions at doses exceeding 3x1016 ions/cm2, the mechanical properties closely resembled those of films that were conventionally fired to 450°C.
