MOOCs are changing the educational landscape and gaining a lot of attention in scientific literature. However, the pedagogical design of these proposals has been called into question. It is precisely MOOCs’ social aspect, i.e. the interaction between course participants and the support for learning processes that has become one of the main topics of interest. This article presents the results of a research project carried out at the University of the Basque Country, which focused in cooperative learning and the intensive use of social networks in a MOOC. Significant data was compiled through Likert-type surveys, revealing that the use of both external and internal social networks in a massive open online course is a factor that is evaluated positively by students. We argue that the use of social networks as a learning strategy in a MOOC has an influence on academic performance and on the students' success rate. Furthermore, the participants’ age also has a bearing on the social networks they use, and we have found that the younger members tend to work with external networks such as Twitter or personal blogs, whereas the older students are more inclined to use forums from the Chamilo or Ning platforms.

The transcription factors nuclear factor of activated T cells (NFAT) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) coordinately regulate cytokine gene expression in activated T-cells by binding to closely juxtaposed sites in cytokine promoters. The structural basis for cooperative binding of NFAT and AP-1 to these sites, and indeed for the cooperative binding of transcription factors to composite regulatory elements in general, is not well understood. Mutagenesis studies have identified a segment of AP-1, which lies at the junction of its DNA-binding and dimerization domains (basic region and leucine zipper, respectively), as being essential for protein–protein interactions with NFAT in the ternary NFAT/AP-1/DNA complex. In a model of the ternary complex, the segment of NFAT nearest AP-1 is the Rel insert region (RIR), a feature that is notable for its hypervariability in size and in sequence amongst members of the Rel transcription factor family. Here we have used mutational analysis to study the role of the NFAT RIR in binding to DNA and AP-1. Parallel yeast one-hybrid screening assays in combination with alanine-scanning mutagenesis led to the identification of four amino acid residues in the RIR of NFAT2 (also known as NFATC1 or NFATc) that are essential for cooperativity with AP-1 (Ile-544, Glu-545, Thr-551, and Ile-553), and three residues that are involved in interactions with DNA (Lys-538, Arg-540, and Asn-541). These results were confirmed and extended through in vitro binding assays. We thus conclude that the NFAT RIR plays an essential dual role in DNA recognition and cooperative binding to AP-1 family transcription factors.

Este estudo buscou investigar a existência de aspectos de qualidade de vida no trabalho em uma cooperativa de catadores de materiais recicláveis e se a relação de qualidade de vida no trabalho e o reconhecimento social resultam e se fazem presentes na cooperativa de catadores, sendo esta evidenciada a partir da visão de seus cooperados. A questão que norteia este estudo é: A qualidade de vida no trabalho em uma cooperativa contribui para a melhoria do reconhecimento social? Para responder a esta questão, os referenciais foram os estudos de Walton (1973) e Limongi-França (2010) que apresentaram categorias norteadoras para esta pesquisa delimitada a uma cooperativa de catadores do Grande ABC Paulista localizada no município de Mauá. A metodologia utilizada neste estudo foi qualitativa, cujo instrumento deu-se por meio da aplicação de entrevistas com oito dos vinte e oito cooperados que fazem parte desta cooperativa de catadores. De acordo com a pesquisa realizada, constatou-se a importância da participação destes trabalhadores em cooperativas, a preocupação com a saúde e segurança no trabalho e o aumento da percepção de importância do seu trabalho como cooperado.

In social selection the phenotype of an individual depends on its own genotype as well as on the phenotypes, and so genotypes, of other individuals. This makes it impossible to associate an invariant phenotype with a genotype: the social context is crucial. Descriptions of metazoan development, which often is viewed as the acme of cooperative social behaviour, ignore or downplay this fact. The implicit justification for doing so is based on a group-selectionist point of view. Namely, embryos are clones, therefore all cells have the same evolutionary interest, and the visible differences between cells result from a common strategy. The reasoning is flawed, because phenotypic heterogeneity within groups can result from contingent choices made by cells from a flexible repertoire as in multicellular development. What makes that possible is phenotypic plasticity, namely the ability of a genotype to exhibit different phenotypes. However, co-operative social behaviour with division of labour requires that different phenotypes interact appropriately, not that they belong to the same genotype, or have overlapping genetic interests. We sketch a possible route to the evolution of social groups that involves many steps: (a) individuals that happen to be in spatial proximity benefit simply by virtue of their number; (b) traits that are already present act as preadaptations and improve the efficiency of the group; and (c) new adaptations evolve under selection in the social context-that is, via interactions between individuals-and further strengthen group behaviour. The Dictyostelid or cellular slime mould amoebae (CSMs) become multicellular in an unusual way, by the aggregation of free-living cells. In nature the resulting group can be genetically homogeneous (clonal) or heterogeneous (polyclonal); in either case its development, which displays strong cooperation between cells (to the extent of so-called altruism) is not affected. This makes the CSMs exemplars for the study of social behaviour.

The modern world is replete with ethical challenges of Orwellian proportions. The violation of human rights and misrecognition of identities are two of the most pressing examples. In this paper, the ethical theories of Habermas and Honneth are aligned as a way of addressing these specific challenges within social work. It is suggested that these theories are complementary, mutually rectifying and concordant at the meta-ethical level of analysis. The alignment is also justified, pargmatically, through the construction of three hypothetical vignettes demonstrating different kinds of practice dilemmas. The need for egalitarian communication and the imperative to recognise human identity in all its dimensions subsequently emerge as the two foundation stones for ethical deliberation in social work.

Summary: This article provides a review of the contribution of Axel Honneth’s model of recognition for critical social work. While Honneth’s tripartite conceptualisation of optimal identity-formation is positively appraised, his analysis of the link between misrecognition, the experience of shame and eventual sense of moral outrage, is contested. Drawing on a range of sources, including the sociology of shame, Honneth’s ideas about the emotional antecedents of emancipatory action are revised to guide critical social work with misrecognised service users.

Findings: The intellectual background to Honneth’s recognition model, emanating from leading German philosophers, is described and its application to social work set out. Even so, Honneth’s model is found to be deficient in one primary regard: its assumption about the emotional antecedents to quests for withheld recognition is misapprehended. In particular, the argument in this article is that the ubiquitous emotion of shame, which Honneth argues flows from misrecognition, must be carefully addressed through the medium of relationship, otherwise it might lead to repressed shame and frustrated attempts at social struggle. To this end, a social work process is delineated for dealing with shame, following episodes of misrecognition.

Applications: Honneth’s model of recognition, along with revised ideas about how to recognise and manage shame, is incorporated into a conceptual framework for critical social work practice. With this renewed understanding of the impact of shame, following misrecognition, social workers should be better equipped conceptually to enable service users to take action for empowerment.

A modified version of the social habituation/dis-habituation paradigm was employed to examine social recognition memory in Wistar rats during two opposing (active and inactive) circadian phases, using different intertrial intervals (30 and 60 min). Wheel-running activity was monitored continuously to identify circadian phase. To avoid possible masking effects of the light-dark cycle, the rats were synchronized to a skeleton photoperiod, which allowed testing during different circadian phases under identical lighting conditions. In each trial, an infantile intruder was introduced into an adult`s home-cage for a 5-minute interaction session, and social behaviors were registered. Rats were exposed to 5 trials per day for 4 consecutive days: oil days I and 2, each resident was exposed to the same intruder; on days 3 and 4, each resident was exposed to a different intruder in each trial. I he resident`s social investigatory behavior was more intense when different intruders were presented compared to repeated presentation of the same intruder, suggesting social recognition memory. This effect was stronger when the rats were tested during the inactive phase and when the intertrial interval was 60 min, These findings Suggest that social recognition memory, as evaluated in this modified habituation/dis-habituation paradigm, is influenced by the circadian rhythm phase during which testing is performed, and by intertrial interval. Background: Despite the fact that public speaking is a common academic activity and that social phobia has been associated with lower educational achievement and impaired academic performance, little research has examined the prevalence of social phobia in college students. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of social phobia in a large sample of Brazilian college students and to examine the academic impact of this disorder. Methods: The Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN) and the MINI-SPIN, used as the indicator of social phobia in the screening phase, were applied to 2319 randomly selected students from two Brazilian universities. For the second phase (diagnostic confirmation), four psychiatrists and one clinical psychologist administered the SCID-IV to subjects with MINI-SPIN scores of 6 or higher. Results: The prevalence of social phobia among the university students was 11.6%. Women with social phobia had significantly lower grades than those without the disorder. Fear of public speaking was the most common social fear. Only two of the 237 students with social phobia (0.8%) had previously received a diagnosis of social phobia and were under treatment. Limitations: Social phobia comorbidities were not evaluated in this study. The methods of assessment employed by the universities (written exams) may mask the presence of social phobia. This was not a population-based study, and thus the results are not generalizable to the entire population with social phobia. Conclusion: Preventive strategies are recommended to reduce the under-recognition and the adverse impact of social phobia on academic performance and overall quality of life of university students. The crystal structure of the pheromone Er-1 from the unicellular eukaryotic organism Euplotes raikovi was determined at 1.6 A resolution and refined to a crystallographic R factor of 19.9%. In the tightly packed crystal, two extensive intermolecular helix-helix interactions arrange the Er-1 molecules into layers. Since the putative receptor of the pheromone is a membrane-bound protein, whose extracellular C-terminal domain is identical in amino acid sequence to the soluble pheromone, the interactions found in the crystal may mimic the pheromone-receptor interactions as they occur on a cell surface. Based on this, we propose a model for the interaction between soluble pheromone molecules and their receptors. In this model, strong pheromone-receptor binding emerges as a consequence of the cooperative utilization of several weak interactions. The model offers an explanation for the results of binding studies and may also explain the adhesion between cells that occurs during mating.
