An equivalent algorithm is proposed to simulate thermal effects of the magma intrusion in geological systems, which are composed of porous rocks. Based on the physical and mathematical equivalence, the original magma solidification problem with a moving boundary between the rock and intruded magma is transformed into a new problem without the moving boundary but with a physically equivalent heat source. From the analysis of an ideal solidification model, the physically equivalent heat source has been determined in this paper. The major advantage in using the proposed equivalent algorithm is that the fixed finite element mesh with a variable integration time step can be employed to simulate the thermal effect of the intruded magma solidification using the conventional finite element method. The related numerical results have demonstrated the correctness and usefulness of the proposed equivalent algorithm for simulating the thermal effect of the intruded magma solidification in geological systems. Simulations provide a powerful means to help gain the understanding of crustal fault system physics required to progress towards the goal of earthquake forecasting. Cellular Automata are efficient enough to probe system dynamics but their simplifications render interpretations questionable. In contrast, sophisticated elasto-dynamic models yield more convincing results but are too computationally demanding to explore phase space. To help bridge this gap, we develop a simple 2D elastodynamic model of parallel fault systems. The model is discretised onto a triangular lattice and faults are specified as split nodes along horizontal rows in the lattice. A simple numerical approach is presented for calculating the forces at medium and split nodes such that general nonlinear frictional constitutive relations can be modeled along faults. Single and multi-fault simulation examples are presented using a nonlinear frictional relation that is slip and slip-rate dependent in order to illustrate the model.

Although Aspergillus is widespread, clinically significant disease is rare in immunocompetent patients. We present a case of an otherwise healthy individual who developed cerebral vasculitis and stroke symptoms from Aspergillus, to raise awareness of this entity. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc.

Toxoplasma gondu affects mainly warm-blooded animals including birds Even though previous experimental data indicate that raptors are resistant to clinical infection there is no information regarding the susceptibility of Brazilian birds of prey to T gondii The present study aimed to observe how the crested caracara a common raptor in Brazil Interacts with T gondu, using an experimental model Seven crested caracaras seronegative for T gondu were separated into infected (n = 5) and control groups (n = 2) Birds from the infected group were fed T gondu-Infected Calomys callosus a rodent present in Brazilian savanna and described as highly susceptible to infection by the parasite for three consecutive days while control animals were fed non-Infected rodents All Infected birds produced T gondu-specific IgG antibodies that were firstly detected at day 7 post-Infection with peak production detected between 15 and 30 dpi No significant alterations in clinical and hematological parameters were observed throughout the experimental period and parasites were sparsely found in muscular tissues after the birds were euthanized In conclusion our results demonstrated that crested caracaras are resistant to oral infection with T gondu suggesting that the host-parasite relationship between both species has reached a remarkable equilibrium (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

Like fluoride, lead (Pb) accumulates on the enamel surface pre-eruptively, but it is not yet known whether it also deposits on enamel while dental caries is developing. This study evaluates Pb distribution in bovine enamel slabs submitted to a pH-cycling regimen simulating the caries process. The slabs were subjected to 8 cycles of de- and remineralizing conditions, and Pb (as acetate salt) was added to the de- and remineralized solutions at concentrations of 30 mu g/l (experimental group, E1) and 300 mu g/l (experimental group, E2). The control group (C) consisted of solutions to which Pb was not added. After the pH cycling, 100-mu m sections of the slabs were analyzed by polarizing microscopy, to observe the extent of caries-like lesions, and these sections were used for Pb estimation by Synchrotron radiation X-ray microfluorescence. Caries lesions were observed along all superficial enamel surfaces to an extent of 120 mu m. A Pb concentration gradient was observed in enamel, which decreased toward dentine. The highest Pb signals were observed for group E2, and the differences were statistically significant at enamel depths of 0 (C vs. E2; p = 0.029) and 50 mu m (C vs. E2 and E1 vs. E2; p = 0.029). In conclusion, this study suggests that if Pb is present in the oral environment, it may deposit in enamel during the caries process. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Basel

Pearl millet landraces from Rajasthan, India, yield significantly less than improved cultivars under optimum growing conditions, but not under stressed conditions. To successfully develop a simulation model for pearl millet, capable of capturing such genotype x environment (G x E) interactions for grain yield, we need to understand the causes of the observed yield interaction. The aim of this paper is to quantify the key parameters that determine the accumulation and partitioning of biomass: the,light extinction coefficient, radiation use efficiency (RUE), pattern of dry matter allocation to the leaf blades, the determination of grain number, and the rate and duration of dry matter accumulation into individual grains. We used data on improved cultivars and landraces, obtained from both published and unpublished sources collected at ICRISAT, Patancheru, India. Where possible, the effects of cultivar and axis (main shoot vs. tillers) on these parameters were analysed, as previous research suggested that G x E interactions for grain yield are associated with differences in tillering habit. Our results indicated there were no cultivar differences in extinction coefficient, RUE, and biomass partitioning before anthesis, and differences between axes in biomass partitioning were negligible. This indicates there was no basis for cultivar differences in the potential grain yield. Landraces, however, produced consistently less grain yield for a given rate of dry matter accumulation at anthesis than did improved cultivars. This was caused by a combination of low grain number and small grain size. The latter was predominantly due to a lower grain growth rate, as genotypic differences in the duration of grain filling were relatively small. Main shoot and tillers also had a similar duration of grain filling. The low grain yield of the landraces was associated with profuse nodal tillering, supporting the hypothesis that grain yield was below the potential yield that could be supported by assimilate availability. We hypothesise this is a survival strategy, which enhances the prospects to escape the effects of stress around anthesis. (C) 2002 E.J. van Oosterom. Published by Elsevier Science B.V. Functional genomics is the systematic study of genome-wide effects of gene expression on organism growth and development with the ultimate aim of understanding how networks of genes influence traits. Here, we use a dynamic biophysical cropping systems model (APSIM-Sorg) to generate a state space of genotype performance based on 15 genes controlling four adaptive traits and then search this spice using a quantitative genetics model of a plant breeding program (QU-GENE) to simulate recurrent selection. Complex epistatic and gene X environment effects were generated for yield even though gene action at the trait level had been defined as simple additive effects. Given alternative breeding strategies that restricted either the cultivar maturity type or the drought environment type, the positive (+) alleles for 15 genes associated with the four adaptive traits were accumulated at different rates over cycles of selection. While early maturing genotypes were favored in the Severe-Terminal drought environment type, late genotypes were favored in the Mild-Terminal and Midseason drought environment types. In the Severe-Terminal environment, there was an interaction of the stay-green (SG) trait with other traits: Selection for + alleles of the SG genes was delayed until + alleles for genes associated with the transpiration efficiency and osmotic adjustment traits had been fixed. Given limitations in our current understanding of trait interaction and genetic control, the results are not conclusive. However, they demonstrate how the per se complexity of gene X gene X environment interactions will challenge the application of genomics and marker-assisted selection in crop improvement for dryland adaptation.

Part replacement and repair is needed in structures with moving parts because of scratchability and wear. In spite of some accumulation of experimental evidence, scratch resistance is still not well understood. We have applied molecular dynamics to study scratch resistance of amorphous polymeric materials through computer simulations. As a first approach, a coarse grain model was created for high density polyethylene at the mesoscale. We have also extended the traditional approach and used real units rather than reduced units (to our knowledge, for the first time), which enable an improved quantification of simulation results. The obtained results include analysis of penetration depth, residual depth and recovery percentage related to indenter force and size. Our results show there is a clear effect from these parameters on the tribological properties. We also discuss a "crooked smile" effect on the scratched surface and the reasons for its appearance.

We report a case of intestinal involvement of Paracoccidioidomycosis, in a patient considered to have colonic cancer. The diagnosis of this mycosis should be considered when an abdominal mass associated with intra-lesional calcifications on X-ray is observed. CT scans increase the findings.

The relationship between bladder tumors and Schistosoma haematobium is well known, but only sporadic cases of bladder infection due to Schistosoma mansoni have been reported. In this case, a 48-year-old woman with macroscopic hematuria, dysuria and a palpable abdominal mass was investigated. Ultrasound showed a large exophytic mass in the bladder. Transurethral resection of the bladder revealed viable eggs of Schistosoma mansoni. The patient was treated clinically with oxamniquine and surgery was performed to resect the large mass. This case shows that schistosomiasis Mansoni in the bladder can simulate bladder cancer.

Venomous animals are those that, by means of a hunting and defense mechanism, are able to inject their prey with a toxic substance produced in their bodies, directly from specialized glands (e.g., tooth, sting, spur) through which the poison passes. Millipedes are poisonous animals; they can be harmful to humans, and their effects usually manifest as erythematous, purpuric, and cyanotic lesions; local pain; and paresthesia. Here, we report a case of skin contact with a millipede for 6h resulting in skin lesions similar to blue toe syndrome.
