Siliceous MCM-41 samples were modified by silylation using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS). The surface coverage of functional groups was studied systematically in this work. The role of surface silanol groups during modification was evaluated using techniques of FTIR and Si-29 CP/MAS NMR. Adsorption of water and benzene on samples of various hydrophobicities was measured and compared. It was found that the maximum degree of surface attachments of trimethylsilyl (TMS) groups was about 85%, corresponding to the density of TMS groups of 1.9 per nm(2). The degree of silylation is found to linearly increase with increasing pre-outgassing temperature prior to silylation. A few types of silanol groups exist on MCM-41 surfaces, among which both free and geminal ones are responsible for active silylation. Results of water adsorption show that aluminosilicate MCM-41 materials are more or less hydrophilic, giving a type IV isotherm, similar to that of nitrogen adsorption, whereas siliceous MCM-41 are hydrophobic, exhibiting a type V adsorption isotherm. The fully silylated Si-MCM-41 samples are more hydrophobic giving a type III adsorption isotherm. Benzene adsorption on all MCM-41 samples shows type IV isotherms regardless of the surface chemistry. Capillary condensation occurs at a higher relative pressure for the silylated MCM-41 than that for the unsilylated sample, though the pore diameter was found reduced markedly by silylation. This is thought attributed to the diffusion constriction posed by the attached TMS groups. The results show that the surface chemistry plays an important role in water adsorption, whereas benzene adsorption is predominantly determined by the pore geometry of MCM-41.

Furfural and its derivatives represent renewable and readily available platforms for a wide range of chemicals. Much attention has been devoted to their functionalization over the last years. TM-catalysed C–H activation has emerged as a powerful tool for synthesizing new C–C and C–X bonds. Moreover, it provides a sustainable way to obtain molecules by reducing waste and saving steps. At the same time, iridium catalysts have proven to be very active in some C–H functionalizations of several (hetero)arenes. Although very promising, this technique is still poorly applied on an industrial scale due to the severe conditions required. Continuous flow chemistry using heterogeneous catalysts appears to be a valuable way to overcome these problems. In this work, we present different solutions for the immobilization of homogeneous iridium complexes on silica gels, using bidentate amines and phosphines as anchoring ligands. We successfully employed the catalysts in C–H silylation and borylation of furfural, using C2 located directing group. In this way, we finally obtained a suitable catalyst that could be potentially applied in continuous-flow chemistry.

Mesoporous Mobil catalytic materials of number 41 (MCM-41) silica was chemically modified using both inorganic and organic precursors and characterized using the techniques, XRD, XPS, MAS NMR, FTIR, W-Vis, and physical adsorption of nitrogen, hydrocarbons (hexane, benzene, acetone, and methanol) and water vapor. Modification using organic reagents was found to result in a significant loss in porosity and a shape change of surface properties (increased hydrophobicity and decreased acidity). With inorganic modifying reagents, the decrease in porosity was also observed while the surface properties were not significantly altered as reflected by the adsorption isotherms of organics and water vapors. Chemical modifications can greatly improve the hydrothermal stability of MCM-41 material because of the enhanced surface hydrophobicity (with organic modifiers) or increased pore wall thickness (with inorganic modifiers). A comprehensive study was conducted on mesoporous MCM-41. Spectroscopic examinations demonstrated that three types of silanol groups, i.e., single, (SiO)(3)Si-OH, hydrogen-bonded, (SiO)(3)Si-OH-OH-Si(SiO)(3), and geminal, (SiO)(2)Si(OH)(2), can be observed. The number of silanol groups/nm(2), alpha(OH), as determined by NMR, varies between 2.5 and 3.0 depending on the template-removal methods. All these silanol groups were found to be the active sites for adsorption of pyridine with desorption energies of 91.4 and 52.2 kJ mol(-1), respectively. However, only free silanol groups (involving single and geminal silanols) are highly accessible to the silylating agent, chlorotrimethylsilane. Silylation can modify both the physical and chemical properties of MCM-41.

A thorough investigation was performed on the physical (mechanical, thermal, and hydrothermal stability) and chemical (ion exchange capacity and silanol number) characteristics of aluminosilicate FSMs, synthesized via a new successful short-time synthesis route using leached saponite and a low concentration of CTAB. Moreover, the influence of an additional Al incorporation, utilizing different aluminum sources, on the structure of the FSM derived from saponite is studied. A mesoporous aluminosilicate with a low Si/Al ratio of 12.8 is synthesized, and still has a very large surface area of 1130 m(2)/g and pore volume of 0.92 cm(3)/g. The aluminum-containing samples all have a high cation exchange capacity of around 1 mmol/9 while they still have a silanol number of about 0.9 OH/nm(2); both characteristics being interesting for high-yield postsynthesis modification reactions. Finally, a study is performed on the transformation of the aluminosilicates into their Bronsted acid form via the exchange with ammonium ions and a consecutive heat treatment.

Glucocorticosteroids (CT) show a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. In view of this, they are extensively used in sports medicine, but their misuse (systemic administration) can lead to severe injuries on athletes and has been restricted by the IOC in recent years. For GC-MS analysis, a derivatization step is necessary in order to convert them to a stable form, thus preventing thermal breakdown with the loss of the ketone side chain. Derivatization of CT is reviewed and a new approach of silylation is presented for screening of CT in urine.

A study was undertaken' to determine the applicability of gas liquid chromatography to the simultaneous analysis of sugars and sugar phosphates from biological samples. A new method of silylation involving dimethylsulfoxide, hexamethyldisilazane, trimethylchlorosilane and cyclohexane (1:0.2:0.1:1) which rapidly silylated sugars and sugar phosphates was developed. Subsequent chromatography on a 5% SE-52 column gave good resolution of the sugar and sugar phosphate samples. Sugar phosphates decomposed during chromatography and were lost at the 7 x 10-3 ~mole level. Acidic ethanol extraction of yeast samples revealed background contamination from the yeast sample, the culture medium and the silylation reagents which would further limit the level of detection obtainable with the glc for sugars in biological samples to the 3 x 10-4 ~mole level.

The influence of the chemical composition and silylation of mesoporous MCM-41 materials on the photochromic behaviour of adsorbed spiropyran (BIPS) and 6-nitrospiropyran was studied. Upon incorporation, the spiropyrans underwent ring opening to form either zwitterionic merocyanine or its corresponding O-protonated form. In all silica MCM-41 or in the MCM-41 containing aluminium, the O-protonated merocyanine was predominantly formed. In the case of MCM-41 modified by silylation of the OH groups, a mixture of zwitterionic merocyanine and spiropyran was present. The photochromic response was studied by means of steady-state irradiation and by laser flash photolysis. Steady-state irradiation (λ > 450 nm) of the solid samples gives rise in all cases to an intensity decrease of the absorption bands corresponding to either the protonated or the unprotonated merocyanine form (reverse photochromism). In contrast, laser flash photolysis at 308 nm of spiropyrans supported on silylated MCM-41 allows observation of the photochemical ring opening of residual spiropyran to the corresponding zwitterionic form (normal photochromism).

Supercritical drying (SCD) and hydrophobic ambient pressure drying (APD) aerogels were prepared from hydrolysis of tetraethoxysilane in solutions of poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (P123) in the range of composition below the threshold for the ordered mesoporous silica precipitation. APD was carried out after silylation of wet gels with trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) or hexamethyldisilazane (HMDZ). The samples were analyzed by small-angle X-ray scattering and nitrogen adsorption. Wet gels are formed by mass-fractal domains, with fractal dimension close to 2, and larger pores superposing the pores belonging to the fractal structure in case of high P123 concentrations. Aerogels exhibit smaller-sized mass-fractal domains with larger mass-fractal dimension accounting for some porosity elimination on drying. The pore volume of the aerogels increases significantly with the P123 amount and it is even larger in the APD aerogels than in the SCD aerogels. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
