Silica-supported Rh catalysts with different Rh particle dimensions were investigated for CO hydrogenation. The catalysts were characterized by various techniques such as TEM, H-2-TPR and N-2 adsorption to study the catalyst morphology, the size distributions of Rh particles and the silica pores. It was found that the distribution and the size of Rh particles were affected by the silica pores, and the metal grains were enclosed in the pores of the support, and thereby their growth was limited. The catalytic activity and selectivity to C-2-oxygenates for CO hydrogenation were found to be significantly controlled by the Rh particle sizes, and the higher activity and selectivity to C2-oxygenates were obtained over bigger Rh particles, within the range of the reported particle sizes.

A novel family of hybrid catalyst with high turnover frequency (TOF) and high selectivity towards aldehydes for hydroformylation of olefins could be successfully approached through direct coordination with the PPh3 ligand to the highly dispersed Rh metal particle precursors. A further advantage is that the catalyst is easily prepared and recyclable. The results revealed that hydroformylation of olefins to aldehydes dominantly took place on the surface of PPh3 ligand modified Rh metal particles of the hybrid catalyst. It was found that the formation of chemical coordination bond between the Rh metal particles and the lone-pair electron of PPh3 was evident through the TG and P-31 NMR measurement. Moreover, the addition of PPh3 onto the Rh/SiO2 exert a significant influence on the adsorption state of reactant CO, H-2 and C2H4 on the PPh3-Rh/SiO2 sample, which probably lead to good catalytic performances for hydroformylation of olefins. An attempt is made to immobilize the homogeneous metal chloride/EMIMCl catalyst for glucose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. To this end, ionic liquid fragments were grafted to the surface of SBA-15 to generate a heterogenized mimick of the homogeneous reaction medium. Despite a decrease in the surface area, the ordered mesoporous structure of SBA-15 was largely retained. Metal chlorides dispersed in such ionic liquid film are able to convert glucose to HMF with much higher yields as is possible in the aqueous phase. The reactivity order CrCl > AlCl > CuCl > FeCl is similar to the order in the ionic liquid solvent, yet the selectivity are lower. The HMF yield of the most promising CrCl-Im-SBA-15 can be improved by using a HO:DMSO mixture as the reaction medium and a 2-butanol/MIBK extraction layer. Different attempts to decrease metal chloride leaching by using different solvents are described. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog.

Synthesis of well-defined nanoparticles has been intensively pursued not only for their fundamental scientific interest, but also for many technological applications. One important development of the nanomaterial is in the area of chemical catalysis. We have now developed a new aqueous-based method for the synthesis of silica encapsulated noble metal nanoparticles in controlled dimensions. Thus, colloid stable silica encapsulated similar to 5 nm platinum nanoparticle is synthesized by a multi-step method. The thickness of the silica coating could be controlled using a different amount of silica precursor. These particles supported on a high surface area alumina are also demonstrated to display a superior hydrogenation activity and stability against metal sintering after thermal activation.

Infrared spectra are reported of formic acid adsorbed at 300 K on a reduced copper catalyst (Cu/SiO2) and a copper surface which had been oxidised by exposure to nitrous oxide. Formic acid was weakly adsorbed on the silica support. Ligation of formic acid to the copper surface occurred only on the reduced catalyst. Dissociative adsorption resulted in the formation of unidentate formate on the oxidised catalyst. The presence of reduced copper metal instigated a rapid reorientation to a bidentate formate species.

FTIR spectra are reported of CO adsorbed on silica-supported copper catalysts prepared from copper(II) acetate monohydrate. Fully oxidised catalyst gave bands due to CO on CuO, isolated Cu2+ cations on silica and anion vacancy sites in CuO. The highly dispersed CuO aggregated on reduction to metal particles which gave bands due to adsorbed CO characteristic of both low-index exposed planes and stepped sites on high-index planes. Partial surface oxidation with N2O or H2O generated Cu+ adsorption sites which were slowly reduced to Cu° by CO at 300 K. Surface carbonate initially formed from CO was also slowly depleted with time with the generation of CO2. The results are consistent with adsorbed carbonate being an intermediate in the water-gas shift reaction of H2O and CO to H2 and CO2.

The production of hydrogen by steam reforming of bio-oils obtained from the fast pyrolysis of biomass requires the development of efficient catalysts able to cope with the complex chemical nature of the reactant. The present work focuses on the use of noble metal-based catalysts for the steam reforming of a few model compounds and that of an actual bio-oil. The steam reforming of the model compounds was investigated in the temperature range 650-950 degrees C over Pt, Pd and Rh supported on alumina and a ceria-zirconia sample. The model compounds used were acetic acid, phenol, acetone and ethanol. The nature of the support appeared to play a significant role in the activity of these catalysts. The use of ceria-zirconia, a redox mixed oxide, lead to higher H-2 yields as compared to the case of the alumina-supported catalysts. The supported Rh and Pt catalysts were the most active for the steam reforming of these compounds, while Pd-based catalysts poorly performed. The activity of the promising Pt and Rh catalysts was also investigated for the steam reforming of a bio-oil obtained from beech wood fast pyrolysis. Temperatures close to, or higher than, 800 degrees C were required to achieve significant conversions to COx and H-2 (e.g., H-2 yields around 70%). The ceria-zirconia materials showed a higher activity than the corresponding alumina samples. A Pt/ceria-zirconia sample used for over 9 h showed essentially constant activity, while extensive carbonaceous deposits were observed on the quartz reactor walls from early time on stream. In the present case, no benefit was observed by adding a small amount of O-2 to the steam/bio-oil feed (autothermal reforming, ATR), probably partly due to the already high concentration of oxygen in the bio-oil composition. The coordination of olefins to square-planar Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes containing 2,9-dimethylphenanthroline (L1) often involves a change of color associated with a change of geometry at the metal center. In order to obtain suitable colorimetric detectors for ethylene gas, a series of new Pd(II) and Pt(II) compounds with a range of 2,9-disubstituted phenanthroline ligands [2,9-di-n-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L-2), 2,9-di-s-butyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L3), 2,9-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (L4), and 2,9-dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline (bathocuproine, L5)] have been prepared and their reactivity toward ethylene investigated both in solution and after depositing the detector compounds on a variety of solid supports. The Pd(II) complex [PdCl2(L2)] supported on silica undergoes a clear color change upon exposure to ethylene, while remaining stable toward air and water, and forms the basis for new simple colorimetric detectors with potential applications in ethylene pipe-leak detection and the monitoring of fruit ripening. Encouragingly, the detector is able to discriminate between fruit at different stages of ripening. The response of the detector to other volatiles was also examined, and specific color changes were also observed upon exposure to aromatic acetylenes. The crystal structures of four new derivatives, including the ethylene-Pt(II) complex [PtCl2(C2H4)(L2)], are also described.

In the preparation of silica-supported nickel oxide from nickel nitrate impregnation and drying, the replacement of the traditional air calcination step by a thermal treatment in 1% NO/Ar prevents agglomeration, resulting in highly dispersed NiO. The mechanism by which NO prevents agglomeration was investigated by using combined in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS). After impregnation and drying, a supported nickel hydroxynitrate phase with composition Ni(3)(NO(3))(2)(OH)(4) had been formed. Comparison of the evolution of the decomposition gases during the thermal decomposition of Ni(3)(NO(3))(2)(OH)(4) in labeled and unlabeled NO and O(2) revealed that NO scavenges oxygen radicals, forming NO(2). The DRIFT spectra revealed that the surface speciation evolved differently in the presence of NO as compared with in O(2) or Ar. It is proposed that oxygen scavenging by NO depletes the Ni(3)(NO(3))(2)(OH)(4) phase of nitrate groups, creating nucleation sites for the formation of NiO, which leads to very small (similar to 4 nm) NiO particles and prevents agglomeration.

Wet impregnation of pre-synthesized surfactant-stabilized aqueous rhodium (0) colloidal suspension on silica was employed in order to prepare supported Rh-0 nanoparticles of well-defined composition, morphology and size. A magnetic core-shell support of silica (Fe(3)O4@SiO2) was used to increase the handling properties of the obtained nanoheterogeneous catalyst. The nanocomposite catalyst Fe3O4@SiO2-Rh-0 NPs was highly active in the solventless hydrogenation of model olefins and aromatic substrates under mild conditions with turnover frequencies up to 143,000 h(-1). The catalyst was characterized by various transmission electron microscopy techniques showing well-dispersed rhodium nanoparticles (similar to 3 nm) mainly located at the periphery of the silica coating. The heterogeneous magnetite-supported nanocatalyst was investigated in the hydrogenation of cyclohexene and compared to the previous surfactant-stabilized aqueous Rh-0 colloidal suspension and various silica-supported Rh-0 nanoparticles. Finally, the composite catalyst could be reused in several runs after magnetic separation. (C) 2011 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Infrared spectra are reported of methyl formate and formaldehyde adsorbed at 300 K on silica, Cu/SiO2 reduced in hydrogen and Cu/SiO2 which had been oxidised by exposure to nitrous oxide after reduction. Silanol groups on silica form hydrogen bonds with carbonyl groups in weakly adsorbed methyl formate molecules. Methyl formate ligates via its carbonyl groups to Cu atoms in the surface of reduced copper. A low residual concentration of surface oxygen on copper promoted the slow reaction of ligated methyl formate to give a bridging formate species on copper and adsorbed methoxy groups. Methyl formate did not ligate to an oxidised copper surface but was rapidly chemisorbed to give unidentate formate and methoxy species. Formaldehyde slowly polymerises on silica to form trioxane and other oxymethylene species. The reaction is faster over Cu/SiO2 which, in the reduced state, also catalyses the formation of bridging formate anions adsorbed on copper. The reaction between formaldehyde and oxidised Cu/SiO2 leads to both unidentate and bidentate formate and adsorbed water.

FTIR spectra are reported of CO, CO2, H2 and H2O on silica-supported potassium, copper and potassium-copper catalysts. Adsorption of CO on a potassium/silica catalyst resulted in the formation of complexed CO moieties. Whereas exposure of CO2 to the same catalyst produced bands ascribed to CO2 -, bidentate carbonate and complexed CO species. Fully oxidised copper/silica surfaces gave bands due to CO on CuO and isolated Cu2+ cations on silica. Addition of potassium to this catalyst removed a peak attributed to CO adsorption on isolated Cu2+ cations and red-shifted the maximum ascribed to CO adsorbed on CuO. For a reduced copper/silica catalyst bands due to adsorbed CO on both high and low index planes were red-shifted by 10 cm-1 in the presence of potassium, although the strength of the Cu - CO bond did not appear to be increased concomitantly. An explanation in terms of an electrostatic effect between potassium and adsorbed CO is forwarded. A small maximum at ca. 1510 cm-1 for the reduced catalyst increased substantially upon exposing CO to a reoxidised promoted catalyst. Correspondingly, CO2 adsorption allowed the identification of two distinct carboxylate species, one of which was located at an interfacial site between copper and potassium oxide. Carboxylate species reacted with hydrogen at 295 K, on a reduced copper surface, to produce predominantly unidentate formate on potassium. In contrast no interaction was detected on a reoxidised copper catalyst at 295 K until a fraction of the copper surface was in a reduced state. Furthermore the interaction of polar water molecules with carboxylate species resulted in a perturbation of this structure which gave lower C----O stretching frequencies.

The effect of oxidation and reduction conditions upon the morphology of polycrystalline silver catalysts has been investigated by means of in situ Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Characterization of the sample was achieved by inspection of the νas(COO) band profile of adsorbed formate, recorded after dosing with formic acid at ambient temperature. Evidence was obtained for the existence of a silver surface reconstructed by the presence of subsurface oxygen in addition to the conventional family of Ag(111) and Ag(110) crystal faces. Oxidation at 773 K facilitated the reconstruction of silver planes due to the formation of subsurface oxygen species. Prolonged oxygen treatment at 773 K also caused particle fragmentation as a consequence of excessive oxygen penetration of the silver catalyst at defect sites. It was also deduced that the presence of oxygen in the gas phase stabilized the growth of silver planes which could form stronger bonds with oxygen. In contrast, high-temperature thermal treatment in vacuum induced significant sintering of the silver catalyst. Reduction at 773 K resulted in substantial quantities of dissolved hydrogen (and probably hydroxy species) in the bulk silver structure. Furthermore, enhanced defect formation in the catalyst was also noted, as evidenced by the increased concentration of formate species associated with oxygen-reconstructed silver faces.

Plasmonics is a recently emerged technology that enables the compression of electromagnetic waves into miniscule metallic structures, thus enabling the focusing and routing of light on the nanoscale. Plasmonic waveguides can be used to miniaturise the size of integrated chip circuits while increasing the data transmission speed. Plasmonic waveguides are used to route the plasmons around a circuit and are a major focus of this thesis. Also, plasmons are highly sensitive to the surrounding dielectric environment. Using this property we have experimentally realised a refractive index sensor to detect refractive index change in solutions.
