This paper presents the design of a low cost accessible digital television set-top box. This set-top box was designed and tested to the International ISDB-T system and considered the adoption of solutions that would provide accessible services in digital television in the simplest digital television receiver. The accessible set-top box was evaluated regarding the processing and memory requirements impacts to provide the features for accessible services. The work presents also the access services bandwidth consumption analysis(1).

In this work I propose an additional test to be implemented in EDP’s residential electricity use feedback trials, under InovCity’s project scope. The proposed product to be tested consists of an interface between the smart meter and the television, through a set-top box. I provide a theoretical framework of the importance of feedback, an analysis of results from past studies involving smart metering, and a detailed description of my proposal. The results of a self-developed questionnaire related to the proposal and segmentation issues are also analyzed. Finally, general conclusions are drawn and potential future improvements and challenges are presented.

A multiproxy data set of an AMS radiocarbon dated 46 cm long sediment core from the continental margin off western Svalbard reveals multidecadal climatic variability during the past two millennia. Investigation of planktic and benthic stable isotopes, planktic foraminiferal fauna, and lithogenic parameters aims to unveil the Atlantic Water advection to the eastern Fram Strait by intensity, temperatures, and salinities. Atlantic Water has been continuously present at the site over the last 2,000 years. Superimposed on the increase in sea ice/icebergs, a strengthened intensity of Atlantic Water inflow and seasonal ice-free conditions were detected at ~ 1000 to 1200 AD, during the well-known Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA). However, temperatures of the MCA never exceeded those of the 20th century. Since ~ 1400 AD significantly higher portions of ice rafted debris and high planktic foraminifer fluxes suggest that the site was located in the region of a seasonal highly fluctuating sea ice margin. A sharp reduction in planktic foraminifer fluxes around 800 AD and after 1730 AD indicates cool summer conditions with major influence of sea ice/icebergs. High amounts of the subpolar planktic foraminifer species Turborotalia quinqueloba in size fraction 150-250 µm indicate strengthened Atlantic Water inflow to the eastern Fram Strait already after ~ 1860 AD. Nevertheless surface conditions stayed cold well into the 20th century indicated by low planktic foraminiferal fluxes. Most likely at the beginning of the 20th century, cold conditions of the terminating Little Ice Age period persisted at the surface whereas warm and saline Atlantic Water already strengthened, hereby subsiding below the cold upper mixed layer. Surface sediments with high abundances of subpolar planktic foraminifers indicate a strong inflow of Atlantic Water providing seasonal ice-free conditions in the eastern Fram Strait during the last few decades.

Over the air download is an important feature for terrestrial digital television systems. It provides a cheaper option for DTV receiver manufacturers to provide bug fixes and quality improvements to their products, allowing a shorter time to the market. This paper presents a mechanism proposal of an over the air download software update for the Brazilian system. This mechanism was specified considering the Brazilian DTV over the air download specifications, but it was extended considering efficiency, reliability and user transparency as requirements for software update. A proof of concept was implemented on a Linux based set-top box. The mechanism is divided into five main functional parts: download schedule, packets download, packets authentication, installation and error robustness. A convergência da televisão digital com os jogos de computador é cada vez mais uma realidade. Neste artigo serão apresentadas três vertentes desta convergência: – a oferta de jogos pelos operadores de televisão digital e pelos canais de televisão; – a oferta de programação baseada em jogos de computador pelos canais de televisão; – a oferta de jogos com interacção via SMS pelo operadores de televisão digital e pelos canais de televisão, Em conclusão, são apresentadas duas linhas de evolução desta convergência no curto-médio prazo: 1) o lançamento de novos formatos de entretenimento, que conjugam diferentes meios (TV, Telemóvel, PC, PDA, etc) na definição de uma experiência de jogo acessível a qualquer hora e em qualquer lugar, 2) o lançamento de novos aparelhos que aliam as funcionalidades de uma consola de jogos à de uma set-top box avançada de televisão digital.

A quantidade e variedade de conteúdos multimédia actualmente disponíveis cons- tituem um desafio para os utilizadores dado que o espaço de procura e escolha de fontes e conteúdos excede o tempo e a capacidade de processamento dos utilizado- res. Este problema da selecção, em função do perfil do utilizador, de informação em grandes conjuntos heterogéneos de dados é complexo e requer ferramentas específicas. Os Sistemas de Recomendação surgem neste contexto e são capazes de sugerir ao utilizador itens que se coadunam com os seus gostos, interesses ou necessidades, i.e., o seu perfil, recorrendo a metodologias de inteligência artificial. O principal objectivo desta tese é demonstrar que é possível recomendar em tempo útil conteúdos multimédia a partir do perfil pessoal e social do utilizador, recorrendo exclusivamente a fontes públicas e heterogéneas de dados. Neste sen- tido, concebeu-se e desenvolveu-se um Sistema de Recomendação de conteúdos multimédia baseado no conteúdo, i.e., nas características dos itens, no historial e preferências pessoais e nas interacções sociais do utilizador. Os conteúdos mul- timédia recomendados, i.e., os itens sugeridos ao utilizador, são provenientes da estação televisiva britânica, British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), e estão classificados de acordo com as categorias dos programas da BBC. O perfil do utilizador é construído levando em conta o historial, o contexto, as preferências pessoais e as actividades sociais. O YouTube é a fonte do histo- rial pessoal utilizada, permitindo simular a principal fonte deste tipo de dados - a Set-Top Box (STB). O historial do utilizador é constituído pelo conjunto de vídeos YouTube e programas da BBC vistos pelo utilizador. O conteúdo dos vídeos do YouTube está classificado segundo as categorias de vídeo do próprio YouTube, sendo efectuado o mapeamento para as categorias dos programas da BBC. A informação social, que é proveniente das redes sociais Facebook e Twit- ter, é recolhida através da plataforma Beancounter. As actividades sociais do utilizador obtidas são filtradas para extrair os filmes e séries que são, por sua vez, enriquecidos semanticamente através do recurso a repositórios abertos de dados interligados. Neste caso, os filmes e séries são classificados através dos géneros da IMDb e, posteriormente, mapeados para as categorias de programas da BBC. Por último, a informação do contexto e das preferências explícitas, através da classificação dos itens recomendados, do utilizador são também contempladas. O sistema desenvolvido efectua recomendações em tempo real baseado nas actividades das redes sociais Facebook e Twitter, no historial de vídeos Youtube e de programas da BBC vistos e preferências explícitas. Foram realizados testes com cinco utilizadores e o tempo médio de resposta do sistema para criar o conjunto inicial de recomendações foi 30 s. As recomendações personalizadas são geradas e actualizadas mediante pedido expresso do utilizador.

A Nonius Software é uma empresa nacional de engenharia na área de telecomunicações, que se dedica ao desenvolvimento de soluções para a gestão de sistemas informáticos e de entretenimento, tendo como finalidade o mercado mundial hoteleiro e hospitalar. A solução de TV interactiva da Nonius oferece uma experiência única ao hóspede, ao disponibilizar várias opções de entretenimento e acesso a conteúdos de elevada qualidade e interesse. O hóspede tem acesso a canais de TV, aluguer de filmes, Internet, jogos, informações, promoções e compras na TV. O objectivo principal desta dissertação foi implementar alguns serviços de entretenimento numa televisão LG Pro: Centric. Este equipamento tem como principal vantagem o facto de conter a set-top-box inserida dentro da própria televisão. Em termos arquitectónicos, o sistema Nonius TV tem dois elementos fundamentais: o backend, responsável pelo processamento e tratamento da informação centralizada e o frontend instalado nos dispositivos com os quais o hóspede contacta directamente. Uma parte significativa do trabalho desenvolvido centrou-se na implementação de funcionalidades no backend. Foram, no entanto, também desenvolvidas algumas funcionalidades nos serviços de frontend. Para o cumprimento dos objectivos estabelecidos, foi utilizada a tecnologia FLASH, tendo como linguagem de programação a segunda versão do ActionScript. Relativamente ao desenvolvimento de backend são utilizados o PHP e o JavaScript.

A Smart TV é um equipamento novo e em evolução que incorpora um computador e acesso à Internet em ecrãs de grande qualidade. Permite a implementação de serviços interactivos, acesso à Internet e televisão. À medida que a tecnologia melhora, muitos equipamentos estão a tornar-se tão capazes quanto os computadores normais quando se trata de navegação na web e até mesmo vídeo na Internet (Video-on-Demand e streaming de vídeo). O projecto de estágio “NONIUS.TV na Smart TV LG Pro:Centric” foi desenvolvido na empresa Nonius Software que está inserida no ramo das telecomunicações. Uma das suas áreas de actividade está relacionada com o desenvolvimento de plataformas de entretenimento para o mercado hoteleiro, combinando diversos serviços e funcionalidades a pensar no hóspede. Este projecto teve como finalidade implementar alguns dos serviços e funcionalidades já existentes em plataformas que usam uma Set-Top Box da Nonius Software, numa Smart TV, aproveitando também para inovar e criar novos serviços. Nesse conjunto está incluída a implementação de uma Caixa de Mensagens, Serviço de Quartos, Serviço de Desporto e Lazer, Serviços Informativos, um cliente RTSP, um despertador, um sistema de mudança de idioma e outras pequenas funcionalidades desenvolvidas ao longo de toda a aplicação. Esta dissertação apresenta um estudo sobre as tecnologias Smart TV existentes no mercado, assim como as vantagens e desvantagens da sua utilização para este projecto. Após uma análise de requisitos de forma a estruturar e desenhar os serviços e funcionalidades a serem criados para a aplicação, implementou-se um conjunto de serviços, usando a linguagem de programação ActionScript 2.0, que permitiram à empresa disponibilizar um novo produto baseado na televisão Pro:Centric da LG.

Tutkielmassa selvitetään Kuopion Kaapelitelevisio Oy:n toteuttaman digitaalisen television ominaisuuksia ja niiden sopivuutta tietoyhteiskunnan vaatimuksiin. Tietoyhteiskunnassa tiedosta on tullut tärkein yritysten pääoma. Yritysten välinen toiminta on tiedon siirtämistä palvelun tuottajalta palvelun kuluttajalle. Jotta edellä mainitut asiat ovat mahdollista, tarvitaan tiedon valtatie, joka koostuu tieto-, perus-, varus-, liityntä ja siirtopalvelusta sekä palvelun tuottajista palvelimineen että käyttäjistä päätelaitteineen. Itse tieto liikkuu siirtotietä pitkin. Kuopion Kaapelitelevisio Oy:n ensimmäisen sukupolven digitaalinen televisio täyttää tiedon valtatien ominaisuudet vain varuspalveluiden osalta. Kaikki muut internetistä tutut peruspalvelut eivät ole mahdollisia. Tuleva toisen sukupolven digitaalinen televisio, jossa on mukana MHP-palvelualusta, MHP-digisovittimet ja interaktiivisuuden tuova paluukanava mahdollisuuden tehdä digitaalisesta televisiosta internetin ja mobiiliverkkojen kaltainen monipalveluverkko. Uuden toisen sukupolven digitaalisen television palveluiden tuottamisen suurin este on digisovittimien tulevat myyntiin vasta syksyllä 2003. Tällä hetkellä ainut MHP-digisovitin, Sony Wega NX100, on hinnaltaan noin 4000 €. Tutkimuksen tuloksia tullaan hyödyntämään digitaalisen television kehitystyössä Kuopion Kaapelitelevisio Oy.ssä

In the United Kingdom and in fact throughout Europe, the chosen standard for digital terrestrial television is the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) ETN 300 744 also known as Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial (DVB-T). The modulation method under this standard was chosen to be Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (0FD4 because of the apparent inherent capability for withstanding the effects of multipath. Within the DVB-T standard, the addition of pilot tones was included that can be used for many applications such as channel impulse response estimation or local oscillator phase and frequency offset estimation. This paper demonstrates a technique for an estimation of the relative path attenuation of a single multipath signal that can be used as a simple firmware update for a commercial set-top box. This technique can be used to help eliminate the effects of multipath(1).

Internet protocol TV (IPTV) is predicted to be the key technology winner in the future. Efforts to accelerate the deployment of IPTV centralized model which is combined of VHO, encoders, controller, access network and Home network. Regardless of whether the network is delivering live TV, VOD, or Time-shift TV, all content and network traffic resulting from subscriber requests must traverse the entire network from the super-headend all the way to each subscriber's Set-Top Box (STB).IPTV services require very stringent QoS guarantees When IPTV traffic shares the network resources with other traffic like data and voice, how to ensure their QoS and efficiently utilize the network resources is a key and challenging issue. For QoS measured in the network-centric terms of delay jitter, packet losses and bounds on delay. The main focus of this thesis is on the optimized bandwidth allocation and smooth datatransmission. The proposed traffic model for smooth delivering video service IPTV network with its QoS performance evaluation. According to Maglaris et al [5] First, analyze the coding bit rate of a single video source. Various statistical quantities are derived from bit rate data collected with a conditional replenishment inter frame coding scheme. Two correlated Markov process models (one in discrete time and one incontinuous time) are shown to fit the experimental data and are used to model the input rates of several independent sources into a statistical multiplexer. Preventive control mechanism which is to be include CAC, traffic policing used for traffic control.QoS has been evaluated of common bandwidth scheduler( FIFO) by use fluid models with Markovian queuing method and analysis the result by using simulator andanalytically, Which is measured the performance of the packet loss, overflow and mean waiting time among the network users.

IPTV is now offered by several operators in Europe, US and Asia using broadcast video over private IP networks that are isolated from Internet. IPTV services rely ontransmission of live (real-time) video and/or stored video. Video on Demand (VoD)and Time-shifted TV are implemented by IP unicast and Broadcast TV (BTV) and Near video on demand are implemented by IP multicast. IPTV services require QoS guarantees and can tolerate no more than 10-6 packet loss probability, 200 ms delay, and 50 ms jitter. Low delay is essential for satisfactory trick mode performance(pause, resume,fast forward) for VoD, and fast channel change time for BTV. Internet Traffic Engineering (TE) is defined in RFC 3272 and involves both capacity management and traffic management. Capacity management includes capacityplanning, routing control, and resource management. Traffic management includes (1)nodal traffic control functions such as traffic conditioning, queue management, scheduling, and (2) other functions that regulate traffic flow through the network orthat arbitrate access to network resources. An IPTV network architecture includes multiple networks (core network, metronetwork, access network and home network) that connects devices (super head-end, video hub office, video serving office, home gateway, set-top box). Each IP router in the core and metro networks implements some queueing and packet scheduling mechanism at the output link controller. Popular schedulers in IP networks include Priority Queueing (PQ), Class-Based Weighted Fair Queueing (CBWFQ), and Low Latency Queueing (LLQ) which combines PQ and CBWFQ.The thesis analyzes several Packet Scheduling algorithms that can optimize the tradeoff between system capacity and end user performance for the traffic classes. Before in the simulator FIFO,PQ,GPS queueing methods were implemented inside. This thesis aims to implement the LLQ scheduler inside the simulator and to evaluate the performance of these packet schedulers. The simulator is provided by ErnstNordström and Simulator was built in Visual C++ 2008 environmentand tested and analyzed in MatLab 7.0 under windows VISTA.

In this work, we present the GATE, an approach based on middleware for interperceptive applications. Through the services offered by the GATE, we extension we extend the concept of Interperception for integration with several devices, including set-top box, mobile devices (cell phones), among others. Through this extension ensures the implementation of virtual environments in these devices. Thus, users who access the version of the computer environment may interact with those who access the same environment by other devices. This extension is just a part of the services provided by the GATE, that remerges as a new proposal for multi-user virtual environments creation.
