In this paper, numerical simulations are made, using the three-dimensional restricted three-body problem as the mathematical model, to calculate the effects of a swing-by with the planet Saturn in the orbit of a comet. To show the results, the orbit of the comet is classified in four groups: elliptic direct, elliptic retrograde, hyperbolic direct and hyperbolic retrograde. Then, the modification in the orbit of the comet due to the close approach is shown in plots that specify from which group the comet's orbit is coming and to which group it is going. Several families of orbits are found and shown in detail. An analysis about the trends as parameters (position and velocity at the periapse) vary is performed and the influence of each of them is shown and explained. The result is a collection of maps that describe the evolution of the trajectory of the comet due to the close approach. Those maps can be used to estimate the probability of some events, like the capture or escape of a comet. An example of this technique is shown in the paper. (C) 2005 COSPAR. Excitation functions of quasi-elastic scattering at backward angles have been measured for the (6,7)Li + (144)Sm systems at near-barrier energies, and fusion barrier distributions have been extracted from the first derivatives of the experimental cross sections with respect to the bombarding energies. The data have been analyzed in the framework of continuum discretized coupled-channel calculations, and the results have been obtained in terms of the influence exerted by the inclusion of different reaction channels, with emphasis on the role played by the projectile breakup.

High-precision data of backward-angle elastic and quasielastic scattering for the weakly bound (6)Li projectile on (144)Sm target at deep-sub-barrier, near-, and above-barrier energies were measured. From the deep-sub-barrier data, the surface diffuseness of the nuclear interacting potential was studied. Barrier distributions were extracted from the first derivatives of the elastic and quasielastic excitation functions. It is shown that sequential breakup through the first resonant state of the (6)Li is an important channel to be included in coupled-channels calculations, even at deep-sub-barrier energies.

We present a study of scattering of massless planar scalar waves by a charged nonrotating black hole. Partial wave methods are applied to compute scattering and absorption cross sections, for a range of incident wavelengths. We compare our numerical results with semiclassical approximations from a geodesic analysis, and find excellent agreement. The glory in the backward direction is studied, and its properties are shown to be related to the properties of the photon orbit. The effects of the black hole charge upon scattering and absorption are examined in detail. As the charge of the black hole is increased, we find that the absorption cross section decreases, and the angular width of the interference fringes of the scattering cross section at large angles increases. In particular, the glory spot in the backward direction becomes wider. We interpret these effects under the light of our geodesic analysis.

This is a study of a monochromatic planar perturbation impinging upon a canonical acoustic hole. We show that acoustic hole scattering shares key features with black hole scattering. The interference of wave fronts passing in opposite senses around the hole creates regular oscillations in the scattered intensity. We examine this effect by applying a partial wave method to compute the differential scattering cross section for a range of incident wavelengths. We demonstrate the existence of a scattering peak in the backward direction, known as the glory. We show that the glory created by the canonical acoustic hole is approximately 170 times less intense than the glory created by the Schwarzschild black hole, for equivalent horizon-to-wavelength ratios. We hope that direct experimental observations of such effects may be possible in the near future.

We study a mixture of two light spin-1/2 fermionic atoms and two heavy atoms in a double-well potential. Inelastic scattering processes between both atomic species excite the heavy atoms and renormalize the tunneling rate and the interaction of the light atoms (polaron effect). The effective interaction of the light atoms changes its sign and becomes attractive for strong inelastic scattering. This is accompanied by a crossing of the energy levels from singly occupied sites at weak inelastic scattering to a doubly occupied and an empty site for stronger inelastic scattering. We are able to identify the polaron effect and the level crossing in the quantum dynamics.

We study the scattering of the quantized electromagnetic field from a linear, dispersive dielectric using the scattering formalism for quantum fields. The medium is modeled as a collection of harmonic oscillators with a number of distinct resonance frequencies. This model corresponds to the Sellmeir expansion, which is widely used to describe experimental data for real dispersive media. The integral equation for the interpolating field in terms of the in field is solved and the solution used to find the out field. The relation between the ill and out creation and annihilation operators is found that allows one to calculate the S matrix for this system. In this model, we find that there are absorption bands, but the input-output relations are completely unitary. No additional quantum-noise terms are required.

In this paper we present the Raman scattering of self-assembled InSb dots grown on (001) oriented InP substrates. The samples were grown by pulsed molecular beam epitaxy mode. Two types of samples have been investigated. In one type the InSb dots were capped with 200 monolayers of InP; in the other type no capping was deposited after the InSb dot formation. We observe two peaks in the Raman spectra of the uncapped dot, while only one peak is observed in the Raman spectra of the capped dots. In the case of the uncapped dots the peaks are attributed to LO-like and TO-like vibration of completely relaxed InSb dots, in agreement with high resolution transmission electron microscopy photographs. The Raman spectra of the capped dot suggest a different strain state in the dot due to the capping layer.

A screened Rutherford cross section is modified by means of a correction factor to obtain the proper transport cross section computed by partial¿wave analysis. The correction factor is tabulated for electron energies in the range 0¿100 keV and for elements in the range from Z=4 to 82. The modified screened Rutherford cross section is shown to be useful as an approximation for the simulation of plural and multiple scattering. Its performance and limitations are exemplified for electrons scattered in Al and Au.

Elastic scattering of relativistic electrons and positrons by atoms is considered in the framework of the static field approximation. The scattering field is expressed as a sum of Yukawa terms to allow the use of various approximations. Accurate phase shifts have been computed by combining Bühring¿s power-series method with the WKB and Born approximations. This combined procedure allows the evaluation of differential cross sections for kinetic energies up to several tens of MeV. Numerical results are used to analyze the validity of several approximate methods, namely the first- and second-order Born approximations and the screened Mott formula, which are frequently adopted as the basis of multiple scattering theories and Monte Carlo simulations of electron and positron transport.

We have analyzed middle repetitive DNA in the albumin and vitellogenin gene families of Xenopus laevis. Mapping specific repetitive DNA sequences derived from introns of the A1 vitellogenin gene reveals that these sequences are scattered within and around the four vitellogenin genes (A1, A2, B1 and B2) and the two albumin genes (74 kd and 68 kd). Three repetitive DNA elements present in the A1 vitellogenin transcriptional unit are also located in introns of the 74 kd albumin gene. This apparently random distribution of middle repetitive DNA in the two gene families suggests that the analyzed sequences are not involved in gene regulation, but rather that they might represent unstable genetic elements. This hypothesis is further supported by the finding that size polymorphism in the A1 vitellogenin gene and in the 74 kd albumin gene is correlated with the presence or absence of repetitive DNA.

Scattering characteristics of multilayer fluoride coatings for 193 nm deposited by ion beam sputtering and the related interfacial roughnesses are investigated. Quarter- and half-wave stacks of MgF2 and LaF3 with increasing thickness are deposited onto CaF2 and fused silica and are systematically characterized. Roughness measurements carried out by atomic force microscopy reveal the evolution of the power spectral densities of the interfaces with coating thickness. Backward-scattering measurements are presented, and the results are compared with theoretical predictions that use different models for the statistical correlation of interfacial roughnesses.

We consider the coupling of quantum massless and massive scalar particles with exact gravitational plane waves. The cross section for scattering of the quantum particles by the waves is shown to coincide with the classical cross section for scattering of geodesics. The expectation value of the scalar field stress tensor between scattering states diverges at the points where classical test particles focus after colliding with the wave. This indicates that back-reaction effects cannot be ignored for plane waves propagating in the presence of quantum particles and that classical singularities are likely to develop.

The interatomic potential of the system I - I at intermediate and small distances is calculated from atomic DFS electron densities within a statistical model. Structures in the potential, due to the electronic shells, are investigated. Calculations of the elastic differential scattering cross section for small angles and several keV impact energies show a detailed peak pattern which can be correlated to individual electronic shell interaction.
