El rock, como elemento cultural, jugó un papel importante en la transformación política y social de los Estados Unidos en la década de los sesentas. El escrito busca la conexión entre la música y la política, el poder y la cultura.

L’objectif principal de cette thèse de doctorat en composition consiste en la conceptualisation et création d’une oeuvre pour guitare électrique et dispositif électronique se situant à un point de rencontre stylistique entre le free jazz, la musique électro glitch et le drone métal. Le présent texte vise principalement à expliciter la démarche de création de cette oeuvre, intitulée feedback. À la suite du chapitre d'introduction qui décrit l'origine et les objectifs de ce projet de composition, le premier chapitre est consacré à une réflexion sur l'improvisation musicale. En partant d'une description générale de cette pratique et de ses origines, cinq manifestations de l'improvisation qui ont influencé l’oeuvre y sont décrites. Dans le deuxième chapitre est présentée l'hyperguitare qui a été développée pour la pièce ainsi que la description de ses composantes matérielles et logicielles. Dans le troisième chapitre sont décrits le contexte de création, le rôle de l’improvisation dans le processus de création et la description technique des quatre oeuvres composées en amont de feedback. Le quatrième chapitre est dédié à la pièce feedback inspirée de l'œuvre cinématographique et littéraire Fight Club et imprégnée, sur le plan stylistique, de la culture rock, du free jazz et de la musique électroacoustique glitch. En conclusion sont présentés les nouveaux objectifs que ces recherches ont engendrés.

This article discusses the aesthetic and spatial representational strategies of the popular studio-based musical television drama serials Rock Follies and Rock Follies of ’77. It analyses how the texts’ themes relating to women and the entertainment industry are mediated through their postmodern ironic mode and representation of fantastic spaces. Rock Follies’ distinctive stylised aesthetic and mode of caricature are analysed with reference to the visual intentions and ‘voice’ of the writer, Howard Schuman. Through considering the programmes’ various spatial strategies, the article draws attention to the importance of visual and performance style in their postmodern discourse on culture, fantasy, gender and subjectivity. Analysis of the spaces of musical performance, characters’ domestic environments and simulated entertainment spaces reveals how a dialectic is established between the escapist imaginative pleasures of fantasy and the manipulative and exploitative practices of the culture industry. The shift from the optimism of the first series, when the LittleLadies first form, to the darker mood of the second series, in which they are increasingly divided by industry pressures, is traced through changes in the aesthetics of space and characterisation. As a space of artifice, performance and electronic visual manipulation that facilitates the texts’ reflexive representation of culture and feminised fantasy, the studio’s unique aesthetic strengths emerge through this case study.

Genetic variation is the resource animal breeders exploit in stock improvement programs. Both the process of selection and husbandry practices employed in aquaculture will erode genetic variation levels overtime, hence the critical resource can be lost and this may compromise future genetic gains in breeding programs. The amount of genetic variation in five lines of Sydney Rock Oyster (SRO) that had been selected for QX (Queensland unknown) disease resistance were examined and compared with that in a wild reference population using seven specific SRO microsatellite loci. The five selected lines had significantly lower levels of genetic diversity than did the wild reference population with allelic diversity declining approximately 80%, but impacts on heterozygosity per locus were less severe. Significant deficiencies in heterozygotes were detected at six of the seven loci in both mass selected lines and the wild reference population. Against this trend however, a significant excess of heterozygotes was recorded at three loci Sgo9, Sgo14 and Sgo21 in three QX disease resistant lines (#2, #5 and #13). All populations were significantly genetic differentiated from each other based on pairwise FST values. A neighbour joining tree based on DA genetic distances showed a clear separation between all culture and wild populations. Results of this study show clearly, that the impacts of the stock improvement program for SRO has significantly eroded natural levels of genetic variation in the culture lines. This could compromise long-term genetic gains and affect sustainability of the SRO breeding program over the long-term.

Magnetotactic bacteria (MTB) are ubiquitous in aquatic habitats. Because of their fastidious requirements for growth conditions, only very few axenic MTB cultures have been obtained worldwide. In this study, we report a novel marine magnetotactic spirillum axenic culture, designated as QH-2, isolated from the China Sea. It was able to grow in semi-solid or liquid chemically defined medium. The cells were amphitrichously flagellated and contained one single magnetosome chain with an average number of 16 magnetosomes per cell. Phosphate and lipid granules were also observed in the cells. Both rock magnetism and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy characterizations indicated that the magnetosomes in QH-2 were single-domain magnetites (Fe3O4). QH-2 cells swam mostly in a straight line at a velocity of 20-50 mu m/s and occasionally changed to a helical motion. Unlike other magnetotactic spirilla. QH-2 cells responded to light illumination. As a consequence of illumination, the cells changed the direction in which they swam from parallel to the magnetic field to antiparallel. This response appears to be similar to the effect of an increase in [O-2]. Analysis of the QH-2 16S rRNA sequence showed that it had greater than 11% sequence divergence from freshwater magnetotactic spirilla. Thus, the marine QH-2 strain seems to be both phylogenetically and magnetotactically distinct from the freshwater Magnetospirillum spp. studied previously. (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS. There were three purposes to this study. The first purpose was to determine how learning can be influenced by various factors i~ the rock climbing experience. The second purpose was to examine what people can learn from the rock climbing experience. The third purpose was to investigate whether that learning can transfer from the rock climbing experience to the subjects' real life in the workplace. Ninety employees from a financial corporation in the Niagara Region volunteered for this study. All subjects were surveyed throughout a one-day treatment. Ten were purposefully selected one month later for interviews. Ten themes emerged from the subjects in terms of what was learned. Inspiration, motivation, and determination, preparation, goals and limitations, perceptions and expectations, confidence and risk taking, trust and support, teamwork, feedback and encouragement, learning from failure, and finally, skills and flow. All participants were able to transfer what was learned back to the workplace. The results of this study suggested that subjects' learning was influenced by their ability to: take risks in a safe environment, fail without penalty, support each other, plan without time constraints, and enjoy the company of fellow workers that they wouldn't normally associate with. Future directions for research should include different types of treatments such as white water rafting, sky diving, tall ship sailing, or caving.

Brooklyn est depuis quelques années un épicentre de la musique indépendante aux États-Unis. En utilisant la démarche ethnographique, l’auteur s’intéresse au rôle des médiateurs dans la définition du réseau socio-musical de la scène « indie » de Brooklyn à New York. Il met en relief la façon dont historiquement, le quartier brooklynois de Williamsburg est devenu un lieu important d’établissement des Brooklyn est depuis quelques années un épicentre de la musique indépendante aux États-Unis. En utilisant la démarche ethnographique, l’auteur s’intéresse au rôle des médiateurs dans la définition du réseau socio-musical de la scène « indie » de Brooklyn à New York. Il met en relief la façon dont historiquement, le quartier brooklynois de Williamsburg est devenu un lieu important d’établissement des musiciens alternatifs. Il aborde la façon dont les hipsters, comme communauté, font appel à différentes pratiques pour contourner le rapport d’infériorité avec les étiquettes majors. Il s’intéresse aussi au « do it yourself » ainsi qu’au rôle de New York dans le milieu musical mondial. Finalement, il s’intéresse aux médias qui définissent et structurent le milieu de la musique indépendante de Brooklyn.

El Festival Rock al Parque es un evento de interés cultural desarrollado y ejecutado por la Administración Distrital de Bogotá, a través del cual se fomenta la creación de propuestas artísticas y se intervienen diversas problemáticas sociales utilizando la música rock como un medio directo para llegar a los jóvenes de la ciudad. Este Festival nace en 1995 y se ha desarrollado ininterrumpidamente hasta el día de hoy. Aunque ha pasado por diversas dificultades, el Festival es un ícono representativo de identidad de las bogotanas y los bogotanos. En este Trabajo de investigación se analiza el Festival Rock al Parque como política pública liderada por la Orquesta Filarmónica de Bogotá y su incidencia en tres aspectos de la cultura democrática, a saber la cultura ciudadana, la participación ciudadana y la apropiación del espacio público.

The alteration of minerals in rocks and the availability of elements for plant nutrition require long periods of time, and microorganisms are thought to induce the release of potassium and phosphate from rocks. In this context, this work evaluates the role of the yeast Torulaspora globosa, isolated from the sugar cane rhizosphere, in the solubilization of potassium from alkaline ultramafic rock powder. The experiments were performed in liquid medium, with or without agitation, at 30°C with the following treatments: culture medium + alkaline ultramafic; culture medium + yeast suspension; and culture medium + yeast suspension + alkaline ultramafic. The results showed that as much as 38% of the total potassium in the rock was released in the medium with the yeast during a 15-day period of incubation. Acid production may be the mechanism by which the yeast solubilizes potassium because the total acidity increased during the sampling period. Agitation (which increased oxygen availability) resulted in approximately 20% more biosolubilization of the alkaline ultramafic rock than with the static culture. These data indicate the potential for this yeast in biosolubilization processes and biofertilizer production.

The soil of the Paraiba, in generality, are acid and with low levels of available match, seriously limiting the income of the plants. A research in vegetation house was lead, with the objective to evaluate doses of calcareous soil and match in the culture of ricinus. The treatments had been composites for five levels of match: 0.0; 80; 160; 240 and 360 kg ha(-1) of P(2)O(5) and four dosis of calcareous rock: 0.0; 2.5; 3.5 and 4.5 t ha(-1) in experimental delineation of blocks casualized with 4 factorial project x 3 (four levels of match and three doses of calcareous soil) more two treatments you add zero of match (0.0 P(2)O(5): 2,5 t ha(-1) of calcareous soil) and calcareous soil zero (240 P(2)O(5): 0.0 t ha(-1) of calcareous soil), with three repetitions. The calcareous soil reduced the acidity of the ground and effect of the application of the match (>= 80 kg ha(-1) of P(2)O(5)) in the presence of the collagen (>= 2.5 t ha(-1) of CaCO(3)) with of the calcareous soil (>= 2.5 t ha(-1) of CaCO(3)) in the presence of the match was not verified well (>= 80 kg ha(-1) of P(2)O(5)). The match applied in the absence of the calcareous soil was limited to the income of the culture of what the calcareous soil in the absence of the match.

Forty two soil isolates (31 bacteria and 11 fungi) were studied for their ability to solubilize rock phosphate and calcium phosphate in culture medium. Eight bacteria and 8 fungi possessed solubilizing ability. Pseudomonas cepacia and Penicillium purpurogenum showed the highest activity. There was a correlation between final pH value and titratable acidity (r = - 0.29 to -0.87) and between titratable acidity and soluble phosphate (r = 0.22 to 0.99). Correlation values were functions of insoluble phosphate and of the group of microorganisms considered. A high correlation was observed between final pH and soluble phosphate only for the rock phosphates inoculated with the highest concentration of solubilizing bacteria (r = -0.73 to -0.98).

A literatura contemporânea expressa o rompimento das fronteiras entre a cultura erudita e a cultura de massa ou comercial, criando formas híbridas que convivem no interior do texto. No romance Voyages de l’autre cote (1975), de Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, as canções do pop rock embalam as viagens da fada Naja Naja e de seus amigos em busca do ‘outro lado’. Desta forma, a impregnação da música popular à escritura poética, parece ajudar a libertar a imaginação, preparando as personagens para o encontro do infinito sensível.
