On righteousness and dignity : two challenging issues since early modern times

Concepts such as righteousness, equality, tolerance and freedom are nowadays considered fundamental issues that should prevail in any society. Balance and righteousness thrive however on a very thin layer. We are, in fact, living in an era of duality and antithetical paradigms. This essay approaches two Renaissance authors who dealt with the same matters in their works, at a very different time and through different ways of reflection: Thomas More and Sir Walter Raleigh.

Letter - Andrew Cowan to William Cowan

A letter from Andrew Cowan to his son William Cowan 29 Septemer 1841. The letter reads "Dear William, I have taken my pen the third time since I have received any word from you, my first letter was about the beginning of the year, and the second in the month of April with John Armstrong of Northhouse, he sailed from Liverpool the fifteen of that month with his sisters Jane and Jenny and their two children. I received a letter from him dated Cleavland in the State of Ohio the 6 of June. He did not intend stopping in that place. The leaves us all well for any thing that I know, but I have not heard from Andrew since March altho I have writen to him three months since your Mother and I are both sore faild altho we have tolerable good health for which we desire to be thankfull to the giver of all our mercies, which are new every day, that we may be found in Christs and clothed in his imputed righteousness at the last, for in him is only found true happyness. We have had another cold wet Summer and the crops is far back ------ not light, the price of -----is high and trade bad, but sheep and cattle are high. Cattle have not been higher since the French war, but the cattle trade is very bad at present and the opperatives out of imployment and consequently verrry badly of. If none of my former letters have reached you this will inform you that James is at Lanshawburn, and gets imployment all the year, he keeps a cow and five or six sheep, they have three children, Mary, Hannah, and Andrew; I was there after clipping time seeing them, they seem to be verry happy. James Lamb is well he was here the other night, he has got two letters from his son Adam this Summer; they are still in the same place and will finish their job this fall, and seem to be doing well, your Uncle Adam Scott and family are well. Les attentes messianiques dans les manuscrits de Qumran : conceptions, typologie et contextualisation du messianisme de la communauté qumrano-essénienne

Les textes qumraniens nous fournissent des témoins de première main pour l’étude du développement du messianisme dans le judaïsme durant la période du Second Temple. L’une des découvertes les plus frappantes dans la bibliothèque de Qumrân est la pluralité des attentes messianiques et l’existence de locutions diverses avec un sens messianique. À l’aide d’une analyse littéraire, ainsi que d’une approche socio-critique, surtout à partir d’une distinction typologique entre un messianisme restaurateur ou utopique, nous nous proposons d’examiner les rapports des textes sectaires messianiques de Qumrân 1) aux données bibliques et extra-bibliques contemporaines, 2) aux façons de conceptualiser les différentes figures messianiques et 3) au contexte socio-politique de l’époque. La recherche présente quatre principaux paradigmes à travers desquels les diverses idées messianiques ont été formulées dans la communauté qumrano-essénienne, tandis que l’interprétation resserre la problématique autour de la typologie restauratrice et utopique. Les analyses dévoilent un aspect des attentes du judaïsme ancien, marqué par la croyance en une pluralité d’agents de salut aux traits messianiques: il s’agit d’un schéma oscillant entre l’aspiration à la restauration des structures religieuses et politiques de l’Israël d’autrefois et l’espérance utopique d’un monde dramatiquement transformé. Malgré qu’il soit difficile d’envisager un développement linéaire, unanime et cohérent sur la base du contenu et de la chronologie des textes messianiques, cette recherche démontre une tendance générale qui jalonne l’évolution historique des idées messianiques de Qumrân. C’est la combinaison de plusieurs dynamiques, soit la critique des prêtres-rois asmonéens, la préoccupation de la pureté rituelle et de l’observance de la Loi, et une perspective apocalyptique entrevoyant une transformation catastrophique conduisant à un renouvellement du monde, qui a généré la ferveur messianique propre à la communauté qumrano-essénienne.

Uma avaliação ex-ante do impacto sobre a capacidade tecnológica da localidade acolhedora das empresas que aderiram ao regime automotivo brasileiro e os seus desdobramentos estaduais : o caso da instalação da General Motors do Brasil em Gravataí, Rio Grande do Sul

Esta tese discute três temas: políticas públicas, gestão tecnológica, e setor automotivo. Tendo por objetivo abreviar o ciclo de absorção e desenvolvimento de tecnologia, um volume expressivo de recursos tem sido transferido do setor público para o setor privado através do que é denominado de Política Pública Indutora (PPI). Os governos pretendem, assim, atrair aquelas empresas tecnologicamente mais capacitadas, na expectativa de que transfiram para a localidade onde se instalam o conhecimento que detêm. No Brasil, um dos setores-alvo deste tipo de política tem sido o automotivo, circunstância observada em diferentes momentos da história. Efetivamente, o Regime Automotivo Brasileiro pretende não apenas acelerar o desenvolvimento do país, mas também promover uma significativa transferência de tecnologia. A análise das PPI, por ser de extrema importância, é bastante influenciada e dificultada quer por seus defensores, quer por seus destratores, que as veêm sob os aspectos de sucesso ou não; mas, não bastasse essa dificuldade, há também o elevado conteúdo ideológico que sustenta as argumentações, que faz com que a avaliação se perca num quadro inconclusivo. Afinal, estas iniciativas são benéficas ou não para o país e para as economias regionais? Finalmente, a eficácia, e portanto o acerto desta estratégia só pode ser avaliado expost facto, quando já comprometidos, quiçá irremediavelmente, os recursos públicos. Por essa razão, este estudo desenvolve uma análise ex-ante das políticas públicas do tipo indutoras, fazendo uso de um modelo compreensivo que permite uma análise longitudinal, captando assim, as mudanças no ambiente. Entre outras, procurou-se responder à seguinte questão: é possível, hoje, inferir quanto à contrib uição, se positiva ou negativa, que o Regime Automotivo Brasileiro e os seus desdobramentos estaduais trarão à capacidade tecnológica no entorno da empresa atraída? O problema e a questão de pesquisa foram abordados, predominantemente, sob um enfoque qualitativo, e o método escolhido foi o estudo de caso. Com o auxílio do modelo proposto foi analisada e avaliada a potencialidade de aumento na capacidade tecnológica induzida pela instalação da unidade montadora da General Motors do Brasil, em Gravataí, Rio Grande do Sul. Ao final conclui- se que os benefícios previstos pelo Regime Automotivo Brasileiro, no que diz respeito a capacitação tecnológica local, dificilmente serão atingidos pela instalação de novas empresas automotivas ou a modernização das existentes.
