Kaukolämpöverkoston lämpötilatason alentaminen kasvattaa sähkösaalista sähkön ja lämmön yhteistuotannossa, pienentää kaukolämpöverkon lämpöhäviöitä ja lisäksi hyvä jäähdytys tuo säästöjä kaukolämpöveden pumppausenergian kulutuksessa. Työssä selvitettiin laskennallisesti kaukolämpöveden lämpötilojen alentamisen vaikutuksia ja niiden tuomia säästöjä Kuopion Energian kaukolämpöjärjestelmässä. Tulokseksi saatiin, että laskemalla paluulämpötilaa yhdellä asteella nousee vuotuinen sähköntuotanto 0,1 %, pienenevät lämpöhäviöt 0,88 % ja pumppausenergian kulutus 7,7 %. Menolämpötilaa laskemalla vaikutukseksi saatiin 0,4 % lisää sähköä ja 0,79 % pienemmät lämpöhäviöt. Työssä käytetyillä sähkön hinnalla 92 mk/MWh ja lämmön hinnalla 61 mk/MWh saatiin tulokseksi, että alentamalla paluulämpötilaa asteella on kokonaishyöty noin 68 700 mk vuodessa ja menolämpötilaa alentamalla 71 500 mk. Asiakkaiden lämmönjakojärjestelmät aikaansaavat jäähdytyksen. Ongelmana on, etteivät nykyiset yleisesti käytössä olevat kaukolämpötariffit ohjaa asiakkaita riittävästi hyvään jäähdytykseen. Asiakkaan jäähdytysmotivaation parantamiseksi tulisi kehittää tariffijärjestelmä, joka selkeästi palkitsisi hyvästä jäähdytyksestä. Työssä selvitettiin asiakaskyselyllä asiakkaiden näkemyksiä nykyisestä kaukolämpötariffista ja mielenkiintoa uusiin tariffivaihtoehtoihin. Kyselyn perustella asiakkaat olisivat motivoituneita jäähdytyksen parantamiseen, jos lämmityskustannusten alennus olisi vähintään 10 %. Meno- ja paluulämpötilan alentamisen taloudellisia hyötyjä asiakasta kohti selvitettiin esimerkkitapauksella. Vertaamalla asiakkaan aikaansaamia taloudellisia hyötyjä hänen lämmityskustannuksiinsa, selvitettiin kuinka suuri alennusprosentti jäähdytyksestä palkitsevassa tariffissa voitaisiin tarjota. Työssä käytetyillä energian hinnoilla ja lämpötilojen alentamistapauksilla asiakkaalle voitaisiin tarjota jäähdytyksestä palkitsevassa tariffissa 1-2 % alennus lämmityskustannuksista.

Several geothermometers have been employed to determine the expected temperature in the groundwater reservoirs, most part of them based on the chemical equilibrium between thermal groundwaters and minerals which constitute the aquifer framework. Based on this principle, groundwater from Guarani Aquifer System, which presents temperatures upon to 38°C, classified as hyperthermal by the Brazilian Mineral Water Code, had their chemical composition evaluated with the main purpose to determine the expected temperatures in the reservoir based on the application of several geothermometers. These groundwaters can be classified as Na-HCO3 type evolving to Na-HCO3-Cl-SO4 type due the increase in sulphate and chloride concentrations. Measured groundwater temperatures show a good correlation with the depth of the aquifer, indicating an average geothermal gradient of 27.7°C/km. The lowest geothermal gradients, bellow 25°C/km, are observed in the central portion of the study area; meanwhile the highest gradients are observed in NE and W portions of the study area. Quartz equilibrium based geothermometers return temperature over the measured temperatures, meanwhile chalcedony geothermometer returns temperatures near the measured in the wells, except for the wells located in the area which presents the lowest geothermal gradients. The geothermometers based on the equilibrium between Na/K have returned temperatures diverse from the measured at the field, meanwhile the geothermometer based on the equilibrium between Na/K/Ca has presented good match with groundwater which present temperatures under 50°C, due the thermodynamic equilibrium between these waters and feldspars. Geothermometers show evidences about mixtures between groundwaters from GAS and underlying units, especially in wells located in the SW portion of the study area.

Evidence indicates that endogenous opioids play a role in body temperature (Tb) regulation in mammals but no data exist about the involvement of the specific opioid receptors, mu, kappa and delta, in the reduction of Tb induced by hypoxia. Thus, we investigated the participation of these opioid receptors in the anteroventral preoptic region (AVPO) in hypoxic decrease of Th. To this end, Th of unanesthetized Wistar rats was monitored by temperature data loggers before and after intra-AVPO microinjection of the selective kappa-opioid receptor antagonist nor-binaltorphimine dihydrochloride (nor-BNI; 0.1 and 1.0 mu g/100 nL/animal), the selective mu-opioid receptor antagonist D-Phe-Cys-Tyr-D-Trp-Arg-Thr-Pen-Thr-NH(2) cyclic (CTAP; 0.1 and 1.0 mu g/100 nL/animal), and the selective delta-opioid receptor antagonist Naltrindole (0.06 and 0.6 mu g/100 nL/animal) or saline (vehicle, 100 nu animal), during normoxia and hypoxia (7% inspired O(2)). Under normoxia, no effect of opioid antagonists on Th was observed. Hypoxia induced Th to reduce in vehicle group, a response that was inhibited by the microinjection intra-AVPO of nor-BNI. In contrast, CTAP and Naltrindole did not change Th during hypoxia but caused a longer latency for the return of Th to the normoxic values just after low O(2) exposure. Our results indicate the kappa-opioid receptor in the AVPO is important for the reduction of Th during hypoxia while the mu and delta receptors are involved in the increase of Th during normoxia post-hypoxia. In January 2008, central and southern China experienced persistent low temperatures, freezing rain, and snow. The large-scale conditions associated with the occurrence and development of these snowstorms are examined in order to identify the key synoptic controls leading to this event. Three main factors are identified: 1) the persistent blocking high over Siberia, which remained quasi-stationary around 65°E for 3 weeks, led to advection of dry and cold Siberian air down to central and southern China; 2) a strong persistent southwesterly flow associated with the western Pacific subtropical high led to enhanced moisture advection from the Bay of Bengal into central and southern China; and 3) the deep inversion layer in the lower troposphere associated with the extended snow cover over most of central and southern China. The combination of these three factors is likely responsible for the unusual severity of the event, and hence a long return period

In most reptiles, the ventilatory response to hypercapnia consists of large increases in tidal volume (V-T), whereas the effects on breathing frequency (f(R)) are more variable. The increased V-T seems to arise from direct inhibition of pulmonary stretch receptors. Most reptiles also exhibit a transitory increase in ventilation upon removal of CO2 and this post-hypercapnic hyperpnea may consist of changes in both V-T and f(R). While it is well established that increased body temperature augments the ventilatory response to hypercapnia, the effects of temperature on the post-hypercapnic hyperpnea is less described. In the present study, we characterise the ventilatory response of the agamid lizard Uromastyx aegyptius to hypercapnia and upon the return to air at 25 and 35 degreesC. At both temperatures, hypercapnia caused large increases in V-T and small reductions in f(R), that were most pronounced at the higher temperature. The post-hypercapnic hyperpnea, which mainly consisted of increased fR, was numerically larger at 35 compared to 25 degreesC. However, when expressed as a proportion of the levels of ventilation reached during steady-state hypercapnia, the post-hypercapnic hyperpnea was largest at 25 degreesC. Some individuals exhibited buccal pumping where each expiratory thoracic breath was followed by numerous small forced inhalations caused by contractions of the buccal cavity. This breathing pattern was most pronounced during severe hypercapnia and particularly evident during the post-hypercapnic hyperpnea. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier B.V.

The effects of temperature on lung and blood gases were measured in the South American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus terrificus). Arterial blood and lung gas samples were obtained from chronically cannulated animals at 15, 25, and 35 degrees C. As expected for reptiles, arterial pH fell with increased temperature (0.018 U degrees C-1 between 15 and 25 degrees C and 0.011 U degrees C-1 between 25 and 35 degrees C) while lung gas PCO2 rose from 5.8 mmHg at 15 degrees C to 13.2 mmHg at 35 degrees C. Concurrently, lung gas PO2 declined from 132 mmHg at 15 degrees C to 120 mmHg at 35 degrees C, and arterial PO2 increased from 33 to 76 mmHg in that temperature range. Arterial haemoglobin O-2 saturation rose from 0.53 at 15 degrees C to 0.83 at 25 degrees C but became slightly reduced (0.77) with a further elevation of temperature to 35 degrees C. Arterial haemoglobin concentration increased from 1.96 to 2.53 mM between 15 and 35 degrees C, consistent with higher demands on oxygen delivery to tissues at elevated temperatures. Moreover, the substantial increase of haemoglobin O-2 saturation between 15 and 25 degrees C conforms to the idea that reduction of the central vascular right-to-left shunt (pulmonary bypass of systemic venous return) is associated with high metabolic demands. Larvae of an estuarine grapsid crab Chasmagnathus granulata Dana 1851, from temperate and subtropical regions of South America, were reared in seawater (32 ‰) at five different constant temperatures (12, 15, 18, 21, 24 °C). Complete larval development from hatching (Zoea I) to metamorphosis (Crab I) occurred in a range from 15 to 24 °C. Highest survival (60% to the first juvenile stage) was observed at 18°C, while all larvae reared at 12°C died before metamorphosis. The duration of development (D) decreased with increasing temperature (T). This relationship is described for all larval stages as a power function (linear regressions after logarithmic transformation of both D and T). The temperature-dependence of the instantaneous developmental rate (D-1) is compared among larval stages and temperatures using the Q10 coefficient (van't Hoff's equation). Through all four zoeal stages, this index tends to increase during development and to decrease with increasing T (comparing ranges 12-18, 15-21, 18-24 °C). In the Megalopa, low Q10 values were found in the range from 15 to 24 °C. In another series of experiments, larvae were reared at constant 18°C and their dry weight (W) and respiratory response to changes in T were measured in all successive stages during the intermoult period (stage C) of the moulting cycle. Both individual and weight-specific respiration (R, QO2) increased exponentially with increasing T. At each temperature, R increased significantly during growth and development through successive larval stages. No significantly different QO2 values were found in the first three zoeal stages, while a significant decrease with increasing W occurred in the Zoea IV and Megalopa. As in the temperature-dependence of D, the respiratory response to changes in temperature (Q10) depends on both the temperature range and the developmental stage, however, with different patterns. In the zoeal stages, the respiratory Q10 was minimum (1.7-2.2) at low temperatures (12-18 °C), but maximum (2.2-3.0) at 18-24 °C. The Megalopa, in contrast, showed a stronger metabolic response in the lower than in the upper temperature range (Q10 = 2.8 and 1.7, respectively). We interpret this pattern as an adaptation to a sequence of temperature conditions that should typically be encountered by C. granulata larvae during their ontogenetic migrations: hatching in and subsequent export from shallow estuarine lagoons, zoeal development in coastal marine waters, which are on average cooler, return in the Megalopa stage to warm lagoons. We thus propose that high metabolic sensitivity to changes in temperature may serve as a signal stimulating larval migration, so that the zoeae should tend to leave warm estuaries and lagoons, whereas the Megalopa should avoid remaining in the cooler marine waters and initiate its migration towards shallow coastal lagoons.

Whereas many studies have addressed the mechanisms driving partial migration, few have focused on the consequences of partial migration on trophic dynamics, and integrated studies combining the two approaches are virtually nonexistent. Here we show that temperature affects seasonal partial migration of cyprinid fish from lakes to predation refuges in streams during winter and that this migration in combination with temperature affects the characteristics and phenology of lower trophic levels in the lake ecosystem. Specifically, our six-year study showed that the proportion of fish migrating was positively related to lake temperature during the pre-migration growth period, i.e. during summer. Migration from the lake occurred later when autumn water temperatures were high, and timing of return migration to the lake occurred earlier at higher spring water temperatures. Moreover, the winter mean size of zooplankton in the lake increased with the proportion of fish being away from the lake, likely as a consequence of decreased predation pressure. Peak biomass of phytoplankton in spring occurred earlier at higher spring water temperatures and with less fish being away from the lake. Accordingly, peak zooplankton biomass occurred earlier at higher spring water temperature, but relatively later if less fish were away from the lake. Hence, the time between phyto- and zooplankton peaks depended only on the amount of fish being away from the lake, and not on temperature. The intensity of fish migration thereby had a major effect on plankton spring dynamics. These results significantly contribute to our understanding of the interplay between partial migration and trophic dynamics, and suggest that ongoing climate change may significantly affect such dynamics.

There were several centennial-scale fluctuations in the climate and oceanography of the North Atlantic region over the past 1,000 years, including a period of relative cooling from about AD 1450 to 1850 known as the Little Ice Age1. These variations may be linked to changes in solar irradiance, amplified through feedbacks including the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation2. Changes in the return limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation are reflected in water properties at the base of the mixed layer south of Iceland. Here we reconstruct thermocline temperature and salinity in this region from AD 818 to 1780 using paired δ18O and Mg/Ca ratio measurements of foraminifer shells from a subdecadally resolved marine sediment core. The reconstructed centennial-scale variations in hydrography correlate with variability in total solar irradiance. We find a similar correlation in a simulation of climate over the past 1,000 years. We infer that the hydrographic changes probably reflect variability in the strength of the subpolar gyre associated with changes in atmospheric circulation. Specifically, in the simulation, low solar irradiance promotes the development of frequent and persistent atmospheric blocking events, in which a quasi-stationary high-pressure system in the eastern North Atlantic modifies the flow of the westerly winds. We conclude that this process could have contributed to the consecutive cold winters documented in Europe during the Little Ice Age.

The Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) samples the interstellar neutral (ISN) gas flow of several species every year from December through late March when the Earth moves into the incoming flow. The first quantitative analyses of these data resulted in a narrow tube in four-dimensional interstellar parameter space, which couples speed, flow latitude, flow longitude, and temperature, and center values with approximately 3° larger longitude and 3 km s⁻¹ lower speed, but with temperatures similar to those obtained from observations by the Ulysses spacecraft. IBEX has now recorded six years of ISN flow observations, providing a large database over increasing solar activity and using varying viewing strategies. In this paper, we evaluate systematic effects that are important for the ISN flow vector and temperature determination. We find that all models in use return ISN parameters well within the observational uncertainties and that the derived ISN flow direction is resilient against uncertainties in the ionization rate. We establish observationally an effective IBEX-Lo pointing uncertainty of ±0°18 in spin angle and confirm an uncertainty of ±0°1 in longitude. We also show that the IBEX viewing strategy with different spin-axis orientations minimizes the impact of several systematic uncertainties, and thus improves the robustness of the measurement. The Helium Warm Breeze has likely contributed substantially to the somewhat different center values of the ISN flow vector. By separating the flow vector and temperature determination, we can mitigate these effects on the analysis, which returns an ISN flow vector very close to the Ulysses results, but with a substantially higher temperature. Due to coupling with the ISN flow speed along the ISN parameter tube, we provide the temperature Tvisn∞=8710+440/-680 K for Visn∞=26 km s⁻¹ for comparison, where most of the uncertainty is systematic and likely due to the presence of the Warm Breeze.

From an extract of Drosophila melanogaster head homogenates, a membrane fraction can be isolated that has the same sedimentation properties as vertebrate synaptic vesicles and contains Drosophila synaptotagmin. The fraction disappears from homogenates of temperature-sensitive (ts) mutant shibire(ts1) (shi(ts1)) flies paralyzed by exposure to non-permissive temperatures, and reappears on return to permissive temperatures. Since reversible, temperature-dependent depletion of synaptic vesicles is known to occur in shibire(ts1) flies, we conclude that the fraction we have identified contains synaptic vesicles. We have examined the fate of synaptic vesicle membrane proteins in shibire flies at nonpermissive temperatures and found that all of these vesicle antigens are transferred to rapidly sedimenting membranes and codistribute with a plasma membrane marker by both glycerol velocity and metrizamide density sedimentation and by confocal microscopy. Three criteria were used to establish that other neuron-specific antigens--neuronal synaptobrevin and cysteine-string proteins--are legitimate components of synaptic vesicles: cosedimentation with Drosophila synaptotagmin, immunoadsorption, and disappearance of these antigens from the vesicle fractions in paralyzed shibire flies.

We present sea surface temperature (SST) records with centennial-scale resolution from the Bay of Plenty, north of New Zealand. Foraminiferal assemblage-based paleo-SST estimates provide a deglacial record of SST since 16.5 14C ka. Average Holocene SSTs are 15.6°C for winter and 20.3°C for summer, whereas average glacial values were 14.2°C for winter and 19.5°C for summer. Compared to modern time, cooling of SSTs at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) was ~0.9°C in winter and ~1.5°C in summer. The shift from glacial to Holocene temperatures began at 14.25 14C ka, warming by ~2°C until 12.85 14C ka when temperatures dipped back to glacial values at 11.65 14C ka. The timing of this return to glacial-like SST correlates well with the Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR) rather than the Younger Dryas and documents that the influence of the ACR extended into the subtropics of the Southern Hemisphere, at least in this region of the southwest Pacific. By 10.55 14C ka an SST maximum in summer SSTs of up to 3°C warmer than modern occurred (?24°C), after which SST dropped, remaining at present-day temperatures since 9.3 14C ka. This early Holocene climatic optimum has been widely noted in the Southern Ocean, and this record indicates that this phenomenon also extended into the subtropics to the north of New Zealand.
