The theory for time-resolved, pump-probe, photoemission spectroscopy and other pump-probe experiments is developed. The formal development is completely general, incorporating all of the nonequilibrium effects of the pump pulse and the finite time width of the probe pulse, and including possibilities for taking into account band structure and matrix element effects, surface states, and the interaction of the photoexcited electrons with the system leading to corrections to the sudden approximation. We also illustrate the effects of windowing that arise from the finite width of the probe pulse in a simple model system by assuming the quasiequilibrium approximation.

In this work, we theoretically examine recent pump/probe photoemission experiments on the strongly correlated charge-density-wave insulator TaS2.We describe the general nonequilibrium many-body formulation of time-resolved photoemission in the sudden approximation, and then solve the problem using dynamical mean-field theory with the numerical renormalization group and a bare density of states calculated from density functional theory including the charge-density-wave distortion of the ion cores and spin-orbit coupling. We find a number of interesting results: (i) the bare band structure actually has more dispersion in the perpendicular direction than in the two-dimensional planes; (ii) the DMFT approach can produce upper and lower Hubbard bands that resemble those in the experiment, but the upper bands will overlap in energy with other higher energy bands; (iii) the effect of the finite width of the probe pulse is minimal on the shape of the photoemission spectra; and (iv) the quasiequilibrium approximation does not fully describe the behavior in this system.

We report the in situ optical transmission change in the complete visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum to asses the kinetics of photo induced interdiffusion in Sb/As2S3 nanomultilayered film. The interdiffusion of Sb into As2S3 matrix results in the formation of Sb-As2S3 ternary solid solutions which is explained by the change in optical band gap, absorption coefficients and Tauc parameter (B-1/2) with evolution of time. The wavelength dependence of the time constants provides a better description of photo induced effects. The time evolution of the absorption coefficients and optical band gap are significantly faster in this process. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Nonequilibrium calculations in the presence of an electric field are usually performed in a gauge, and need to be transformed to reveal the gauge-invariant observables. In this work, we discuss the issue of gauge invariance in the context of time-resolved angle-resolved pump/probe photoemission. If the probe is applied while the pump is still on, one must ensure that the calculations of the observed photocurrent are gauge invariant. We also discuss the requirement of the photoemission signal to be positive and the relationship of this constraint to gauge invariance. We end by discussing some technical details related to the perturbative derivation of the photoemission spectra, which involve processes where the pump pulse photoemits electrons due to nonequilibrium effects.

We investigate the dependence of the differential reflection on the structure parameters of quantum dot (QD) heterostructures in pump-probe reflection measurements by both numerical simulations based on the finite-difference time-domain technique and theoretical calculations based on the theory of dielectric films. It is revealed that the value and sign of the differential reflection strongly depend on the thickness of the cap layer and the QD layer. In addition, a comparison between the carrier dynamics in undoped and p-doped InAs/GaAs QDs is carried out by pump-probe reflection measurements. The carrier capture time from the GaAs barrier into the InAs wetting layer and that from the InAs wetting layer into the InAs QDs are extracted by appropriately fitting differential reflection spectra. Moreover, the dependence of the carrier dynamics on the injected carrier density is identified. A detailed analysis of the carrier dynamics in the undoped and p-doped QDs based on the differential reflection spectra is presented, and its difference with that derived from the time-resolved photoluminescence is discussed. By analysing the carrier dynamics based on the rate equations and the change of the refractive index due to the efficient carrier capture, we have calculated the carrier capture process in the InAs/GaAs system detected by a simple degenerate pump-probe technique. The calculated results are found to be in good agreement with the experimental findings. Our results indicate that this simple technique, with the clear advantage of being easy to carry out, can be very useful in studying the carrier dynamics for some specific structures such as InAs ultrathin layers embedded in a GaAs matrix described here.

We demonstrate that the carrier capture and relaxation processes in InAs/GaAs quantum dots can be detected by a simple degenerate pump-probe technique. We have observed a rising process in the transient reflectivity, following the initial fast relaxation in a GaAs matrix, and assigned this rising process to the carrier capture from the GaAs barriers to the InAs layers. The assignment was modeled using the Kramers-Kronig relations. The capture time was found to depend strongly on the InAs layer thickness as well as on the excitation density and photon energy. The intensity-dependent two-photon absorption and nonlinear refraction coefficients of GaP optical crystal at 800 nm were measured with time-resolved femtosecond pump-probe technique. A nonlinear refraction coefficient of 1.7*10^(-17) m2/W and a two-photon absorption coefficient of 1.5*10^(-12) m/W of GaP crystal were obtained at a pump intensity of 3.5*10^(12) W/m2. The nonlinear refraction coefficient saturates at 3.5*10^(12) W/m2, while the two-photon absorption coefficient keeps linear increase at 6*10^(12) W/m2. Furthermore, fifth-order nonlinear refraction of the GaP optical crystal was revealed to occur above pump intensity of 3.5*10^(12) W/m2.

The multi-photon dissociative photoionization dynamics of CF3I has been studied with femtosecond two-color pump-probe time-of-flight mass spectra at a pump pulse of 265 nm and a probe pulse of 398 nn. This enables the A band and 5ppi(3)7ssigma((2)Pi(1/2)) Rydberg state to be accessed with the pump beam. The observed fast and slow decay components of CF3+ and I+ reflect the fast repulsive A band and some higher lying ion-pair states may be responsible for the decay of the 5ppi(3)7ssigma((2)Pi(1/2)) Rydberg state. The results provide information on the different multi-photon pathways producing these ions and the de-excitation mechanism of the 5ppi(3)7ssigma((2)Pi(1/2)) Rydberg state. Various analytical physical models are presented to extract the photodissociation dynamics information from the data obtained in the femtosecond pump-probe experiment. The single- and double-component models are employed to explain the single- and double-channel dissociation of parent molecules. Another single-component model for fragment dissociation or deexcitation is also presented. All cases are explanatorily demonstrated on the pump-probe experimental data.
