Identifying finger postures when interacting with the touch screen of mobile devices

This study presents the results of preliminary test on the interaction between fingertip and touch screen. The objective of this study is to identify the fingertip posture when interacting with touch screen devices. Ten participants, 7 males and 3 females, participated in this study. The participants were asked to touch targets on the mobile devices screen by tapping them sequentially and connecting them. The participants performed the tasks in a sitting posture. A tablet with 10 inches screen and a mobile phone with 4 inches screen were used in the study. The results showed that all participants dominantly used their thumb to interact with the mobile phone in single and two hands postures. The common thumb posture adopted by the participants is the combination of the 60° pitch and 0° roll angles. While for interaction with tablet in various postures observed in the study, the participants commonly used their index fingers in the combination of 60° pitch and 0° roll angles. This study also observed the participant with long finger nails touched targets on the mobile devices screen by using her index or middle fingers very low pitch.

Statistical evaluation of the influence of writing postures on on-line signatures. Study of the impact of time.

The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of unusual writing positions on a person's signature, in comparison to a standard writing position. Ten writers were asked to sign their signature six times, in each of four different writing positions, including the standard one. In order to take into consideration the effect of the day-to-day variation, this same process was repeated over 12 sessions, giving a total of 288 signatures per subject. The signatures were collected simultaneously in an off-line and on-line acquisition mode, using an interactive tablet and a ballpoint pen. Unidimensional variables (height to width ratio; time with or without in air displacement) and time-dependent variables (pressure; X and Y coordinates; altitude and azimuth angles) were extracted from each signature. For the unidimensional variables, the position effect was assessed through ANOVA and Dunnett contrast tests. Concerning the time-dependent variables, the signatures were compared by using dynamic time warping, and the position effect was evaluated through classification by linear discriminant analysis. Both of these variables provided similar results: no general tendency regarding the position factor could be highlighted. The influence of the position factor varies according to the subject as well as the variable studied. The impact of the session factor was shown to cover the impact that could be ascribed to the writing position factor. Indeed, the day-to-day variation has a greater effect than the position factor on the studied signature variables. The results of this study suggest guidelines for best practice in the area of signature comparisons and demonstrate the importance of a signature collection procedure covering an adequate number of sampling sessions, with a sufficient number of samples per session.

Présent sur la scène littéraire, décrit et jugé par ses pairs comme par des anonymes, l'auteur assume désormais une présentation de soi qui constitue sa posture. Systématisée dans les recherches de Jérôme Meizoz depuis plusieurs années, reprise et discutée de puis par plusieurs spécialistes, cette notion s'avère stimulante pour comprendre non seulement le statut et les représentationsde l'auteur moderne mais aussi les transformations de ceux-ci et leur impact sur l'ensemble de la pratique littéraire. En dix chapitres, cet ouvrage de sociologie littéraire propose une réflexion sur l'auteur et ses diverses postures. Après deux chapitres de méthode, plusieurs études de cas sont proposées, de Rousseau à Péguy, de Ramuz à Giono, de Céline à Cingria, sans négliger plusieurs ouvertures vers des écrivains contemporains comme Pierre Michon ou Michel Houellebecq.

Asymmetries of Influence: Differential Effects of Body Postures on Perceptions of Emotional Facial Expressions

The accuracy and speed with which emotional facial expressions are identified is influenced by body postures. Two influential models predict that these congruency effects will be largest when the emotion displayed in the face is similar to that displayed in the body: the emotional seed model and the dimensional model. These models differ in whether similarity is based on physical characteristics or underlying dimensions of valence and arousal. Using a 3- alternative forced-choice task in which stimuli were presented briefly (Exp 1a) or for an unlimited time (Exp 1b) we provide evidence that congruency effects are more complex than either model predicts; the effects are asymmetrical and cannot be accounted for by similarity alone. Fearful postures are especially influential when paired with facial expressions, but not when presented in a flanker task (Exp 2). We suggest refinements to each model that may account for our results and suggest that additional studies be conducted prior to drawing strong theoretical conclusions.
