During outbreaks, locust swarms can contain millions of insects travelling thousands of kilometers while devastating vegetation and crops. Such large-scale spatial organization is preceded locally by a dramatic density-dependent phenotypic transition in multiple traits. Behaviourally, low-density solitarious individuals avoid contact with one another; above a critical local density, they undergo a rapid behavioural transition to the gregarious phase whereby they exhibit mutual attraction. Although proximate causes of this phase polyphenism have been widely studied, the ultimate driving factors remain unclear. Using an individual-based evolutionary model, we reveal that cannibalism, a striking feature of locust ecology, could lead to the evolution of density-dependent behavioural phase-change in juvenile locusts. We show that this behavioural strategy minimizes risk associated with cannibalistic interactions and may account for the empirically observed persistence of locust groups during outbreaks. Our results provide a parsimonious explanation for the evolution of behavioural plasticity in locusts.

O dimorfismo sexual exibido por machos polifênicos em algumas espécies do gênero Ptychoderes envolve variação no rostro, antena e ventritos. A existência de polifenismo pode ser um importante componente no processo evolutivo por meio de novidades morfológicas e comportamentais. O objetivo desse estudo foi determinar a variação em caracteres morfométricos, polifenismo em machos, variação de estruturas com conhecido dimorfismo sexual, possíveis padrões alométricos e testar estas inferências para Ptychoderes através do mapeamento do dimorfismo sexual e de machos em uma reconstrução filogenética de Ptychoderes usando Mesquite 2.04. Foram medidas 23 variáveis morfométricas em 510 espécimes com as seguintes análises realizadas: análises de cluster, analises de componentes principais (PCA), analise de variáveis canônicas (AVC), análise de regressão por eixo maior reduzido (RMA). Cada tipo de dimorfismo foi mapeado em uma filogenia prévia como dois estados separados usando parcimônia. Para todas as espécies o dimorfismo sexual apresentou diferenças significativas entre os sexos com relação aos segmentos antenais (II- X).O compriemtno do rosto e ventrito V foram confirmados como indicativos de dimorfismo sexual (exceto em P. jordani). A única espécie em que não ocorreu machos polifenicos foi P. depressus. Nas outras espécies machos grandes e pequenos diferem significantemente para muitas variáveis com similaridades e diferenças. Na ACP, o primeiro componente (PC1) apresentou alta porcentagem de variância nos dados de todas as espécies; apresentou loadings de mesmo sinal sugerindo diferenças relacionadas ao tamanho para as espécies P. jordani, P. depressus, P. virgatus, P. mixtus e P. callosus e para as espécies P. viridanus, P. antiquus, P. elongates e P. nebulosus apresentou loadings positivos e negativos sugerindo diferenças relacionadas a forma (alometria). O PC2 apresentou loadings positivos e negativos para todas as espécies, um provável componente alométricos. A AVC confirmou os grupos: machos grandes, machos pequenos e fêmeas quando estes ocorreram. Nós encontramos diferentes padrões alométricos para todas as espécies com diferenças e semelhanças entre as espécies. Todos esses resultados confirmam a hipótese de polifenismo em machos e dimorfismo sexual para Ptychhoderes. A análise dos padrões alométricos para o dimorfismo sexual revelou alometria positiva para o comprimento do rostro (CR1) em machos e fêmeas, com os ventritos apenas em machos. Padrões alométricos positivos relacionados ao polifenismo nos antenômeros foram confirmados para os machos grandes e pequenos de quase todas as espécies exceto em P. nebulosus. O ancestral de clados na filogenia de Ptychoderes foi inferido para machos polifênicos (exceto P. depressus) com variáveis no rostro, antenas e ventritos indicativas de dimorfismo sexual com alometria positiva. Estes padrões poderiam estar ligados com o comportamento de proteção das fêemeas realizados por machos grandes durante a oviposição.

Intense male-male competition for females may drive the evolution of male morphological dimorphism, which is frequently associated with alternative mating tactics. Using modern techniques for the detection of discontinuous allometries, we describe male dimorphism in the Neotropical harvestman Longiperna concolor, the males of which use their elongated, sexually dimorphic legs IV in fights for the possession of territories where females lay eggs. We also tested three predictions related to the existence of alternative mating tactics: (1) if individuals with relatively longer legs IV (majors) are more likely to monopolize access to reproductive resources, they are expected to remain close to stable groups of females more than individuals with relatively shorter legs IV (minors) do; (2) if minors achieve fertilization by moving between territories, they are expected to be less faithful to specific sites; and (3) majors should be observed in aggressive interactions more often. We individually marked all the individuals from a population of Longiperna during the reproductive season and recorded the location of each sighting for males and females as well as the identity of males involved in fights. Majors were more likely to have harems, and large majors were even more likely to do so. Majors were more philopatric and all males involved in fights belonged to this morph. These results strongly suggest that the mating tactic of the majors is based on resource defense whereas that of the minors probably relies on sneaking into the territories of the majors and furtively copulating with females.

In arthropods, most cases of morphological dimorphism within males are the result of a conditional evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS) with status-dependent tactics. In conditionally male-dimorphic species, the status` distributions of male morphs often overlap, and the environmentally cued threshold model (ET) states that the degree of overlap depends on the genetic variation in the distribution of the switchpoints that determine which morph is expressed in each value of status. Here we describe male dimorphism and alternative mating behaviors in the harvestman Serracutisoma proximum. Majors express elongated second legs and use them in territorial fights; minors possess short second legs and do not fight, but rather sneak into majors` territories and copulate with egg-guarding females. The static allometry of second legs reveals that major phenotype expression depends on body size (status), and that the switchpoint underlying the dimorphism presents a large amount of genetic variation in the population, which probably results from weak selective pressure on this trait. With a mark-recapture study, we show that major phenotype expression does not result in survival costs, which is consistent with our hypothesis that there is weak selection on the switchpoint. Finally, we demonstrate that switchpoint is independent of status distribution. In conclusion, our data support the ET model prediction that the genetic correlation between status and switchpoint is low, allowing the status distribution to evolve or to fluctuate seasonally, without any effect on the position of the mean switchpoint.

Anurans may be brightly colored or completely cryptic. Generally, in the former situation, we are dealing with aposematism, and the latter is an example of camouflage. However, these are only simple views of what such colorations really mean and which defensive strategy is implied. For instance, a brightly colored frog may be part of a mimicry ring, which could be either Batesian, Müllerian, or Browerian. These are only examples of the diversity of color-usage systems as defensive strategies. Unfortunately, reports on the use of colors as defensive mechanisms are widespread in the available literature, and the possible functions are rarely mentioned. Therefore, we reviewed the literature and added new data to this subject. Then, we the use of colors (as defensive mechanism) into categories. Mimicry was divided into the subcategories camouflage, homotypy, and nondeceitful homotypy, and these groups were also subcategorized. Dissuasive coloration was divided into behavioral display of colors, polymorphism, and polyphenism. Aposematism was treated apart, but aposematic colorations may be present in other defensive strategies. Finally, we propose functions and forms of evolution for some color systems in post-metamorphic anurans and hope that this review can be the basis for future research, even on other animal groups. © 2009 L. The difference in phenotypes of queens and workers is a hallmark of the highly eusocial insects. The caste dimorphism is often described as a switch-controlled polyphenism, in which environmental conditions decide an individual's caste. Using theoretical modeling and empirical data from honeybees, we show that there is no discrete larval developmental switch. Instead, a combination of larval developmental plasticity and nurse worker feeding behavior make up a colony-level social and physiological system that regulates development and produces the caste dimorphism. Discrete queen and worker phenotypes are the result of discrete feeding regimes imposed by nurses, whereas a range of experimental feeding regimes produces a continuous range of phenotypes. Worker ovariole numbers are reduced through feeding-regime-mediated reduction in juvenile hormone titers, involving reduced sugar in the larval food. Based on the mechanisms identified in our analysis, we propose a scenario of the evolutionary history of honeybee development and feeding regimes.

Although “polymorphic castes” in social insects are well known as one of the most important phenomena of polyphenism, few studies of caste-specific gene expressions have been performed in social insects. To identify genes specifically expressed in the soldier caste of the Japanese damp-wood termite Hodotermopsis japonica, we employed the differential-display method using oligo(dT) and arbitrary primers, compared mRNA from the heads of mature soldiers and pseudergates (worker caste), and identified a clone (PCR product) 329 bp in length termed SOL1. Northern blot analysis showed that the SOL1 mRNA is about 1.0 kb in length and is expressed specifically in mature soldiers, but not in pseudergates, even in the presoldier induction by juvenile hormone analogue, suggesting that the product is specific for terminally differentiated soldiers. By using the method of 5′- and 3′-rapid amplification of cDNA ends, we isolated the full length of SOL1 cDNA, which contained an ORF with a putative signal peptide at the N terminus. The sequence showed no significant homology with any other known protein sequences. In situ hybridization analysis showed that SOL1 is expressed specifically in the mandibular glands. These results strongly suggest that the SOL1 gene encodes a secretory protein specifically synthesized in the mandibular glands of the soldiers. Histological observations revealed that the gland actually develops during the differentiation into the soldier caste.
