Boundary equilibrium bifurcations in piecewise smooth discontinuous systems are characterized by the collision of an equilibrium point with the discontinuity surface. Generically, these bifurcations are of codimension one, but there are scenarios where the phenomenon can be of higher codimension. Here, the possible collision of a non-hyperbolic equilibrium with the boundary in a two-parameter framework and the nonlinear phenomena associated with such collision are considered. By dealing with planar discontinuous (Filippov) systems, some of such phenomena are pointed out through specific representative cases. A methodology for obtaining the corresponding bi-parametric bifurcation sets is developed.

In this paper we get some lower bounds for the number of critical periods of families of centers which are perturbations of the linear one. We give a method which lets us prove that there are planar polynomial centers of degree l with at least 2[(l - 2)/2] critical periods as well as study concrete families of potential, reversible and Lienard centers. This last case is studied in more detail and we prove that the number of critical periods obtained with our approach does not. increases with the order of the perturbation. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. The seismic behaviour of one-storey asymmetric structures has been studied since 1970s by a number of researches studies which identified the coupled nature of the translational-to-torsional response of those class of systems leading to severe displacement magnifications at the perimeter frames and therefore to significant increase of local peak seismic demand to the structural elements with respect to those of equivalent not-eccentric systems (Kan and Chopra 1987). These studies identified the fundamental parameters (such as the fundamental period TL normalized eccentricity e and the torsional-to-lateral frequency ratio Ωϑ) governing the torsional behavior of in-plan asymmetric structures and trends of behavior. It has been clearly recognized that asymmetric structures characterized by Ωϑ >1, referred to as torsionally-stiff systems, behave quite different form structures with Ωϑ <1, referred to as torsionally-flexible systems. Previous research works by some of the authors proposed a simple closed-form estimation of the maximum torsional response of one-storey elastic systems (Trombetti et al. 2005 and Palermo et al. 2010) leading to the so called “Alpha-method” for the evaluation of the displacement magnification factors at the corner sides. The present paper provides an upgrade of the “Alpha Method” removing the assumption of linear elastic response of the system. The main objective is to evaluate how the excursion of the structural elements in the inelastic field (due to the reaching of yield strength) affects the displacement demand of one-storey in-plan asymmetric structures. The system proposed by Chopra and Goel in 2007, which is claimed to be able to capture the main features of the non-linear response of in-plan asymmetric system, is used to perform a large parametric analysis varying all the fundamental parameters of the system, including the inelastic demand by varying the force reduction factor from 2 to 5. Magnification factors for different force reduction factor are proposed and comparisons with the results obtained from linear analysis are provided.

The relation between limit cycles of planar differential systems and the inverse integrating factor was first shown in an article of Giacomini, Llibre and Viano appeared in 1996. From that moment on, many research articles are devoted to the study of the properties of the inverse integrating factor and its relationwith limit cycles and their bifurcations. This paper is a summary of all the results about this topic. We include a list of references together with the corresponding related results aiming at being as much exhaustive as possible. The paper is, nonetheless, self-contained in such a way that all the main results on the inverse integrating factor are stated and a complete overview of the subject is given. Each section contains a different issue to which the inverse integrating factor plays a role: the integrability problem, relation with Lie symmetries, the center problem, vanishing set of an inverse integrating factor, bifurcation of limit cycles from either a period annulus or from a monodromic ω-limit set and some generalizations.

The goal of this thesis was the investigation of the structure, conformation, supramolecular order and molecular dynamics of different classes of functional materials (phthalocyanine, perylene and hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene derivatives and mixtures of those), all having planar aromatic cores modified with various types of alkyl chains. The planar aromatic systems are known to stack in the solid and the liquid-crystalline state due to p-p interactions forming columnar superstructures with high one-dimensional charge carrier mobility and potential application in photovoltaic devices. The different functionalities attached to the aromatic cores significantly influence the behavior of these systems allowing the experimentalists to modify the structures to fine-tune the desired thermotropic properties or charge carrier mobility. The aim of the presented studies was to understand the interplay between the driving forces causing self-assembly by relating the structural and dynamic information about the investigated systems. The supramolecular organization is investigated by applying 1H solid state NMR recoupling techniques. The results are related with DSC and X-ray scattering data. Detailed information about the site-specific molecular dynamics is gained by recording spinning sideband patterns using 1H-1H and 13C-1H solid state NMR recoupling techniques. The determined dipole-dipole coupling constants are then related with the coupling constants of the respective rigid pairs, thus providing local dynamic order parameters for the respective moieties. The investigations presented reveal that in the crystalline state the preferred arrangement in the columnar stack of discotic molecules modified with alkyl chains is tilted. This leads to characteristic differences in the 1H chemical shifts of otherwise chemically equivalent protons. Introducing branches and increasing the length of the alkyl chains results in lower mesophase transitions and disordered columnar stacks. In the liquid-crystalline state some of the discs lose the tilted orientation, others do not, but all start a rapid rotation about the columnar axis.

Die causa finalis der vorliegenden Arbeit ist das Verständnis des Phasendiagramms von Wasserstoff bei ultrahohen Drücken, welche von nichtleitendem H2 bis hin zu metallischem H reichen. Da die Voraussetzungen für ultrahohen Druck im Labor schwer zu schaffen sind, bilden Computersimulationen ein wichtiges alternatives Untersuchungsinstrument. Allerdings sind solche Berechnungen eine große Herausforderung. Eines der größten Probleme ist die genaue Auswertung des Born-Oppenheimer Potentials, welches sowohl für die nichtleitende als auch für die metallische Phase geeignet sein muss. Außerdem muss es die starken Korrelationen berücksichtigen, die durch die kovalenten H2 Bindungen und die eventuellen Phasenübergänge hervorgerufen werden. Auf dieses Problem haben unsere Anstrengungen abgezielt. Im Kontext von Variationellem Monte Carlo (VMC) ist die Shadow Wave Function (SWF) eine sehr vielversprechende Option. Aufgrund ihrer Flexibilität sowohl lokalisierte als auch delokalisierte Systeme zu beschreiben sowie ihrer Fähigkeit Korrelationen hoher Ordnung zu berücksichtigen, ist sie ein idealer Kandidat für unsere Zwecke. Unglücklicherweise bringt ihre Formulierung ein Vorzeichenproblem mit sich, was die Anwendbarkeit limitiert. Nichtsdestotrotz ist es möglich diese Schwierigkeit zu umgehen indem man die Knotenstruktur a priori festlegt. Durch diesen Formalismus waren wir in der Lage die Beschreibung der Elektronenstruktur von Wasserstoff signifikant zu verbessern, was eine sehr vielversprechende Perspektive bietet. Während dieser Forschung haben wir also die Natur des Vorzeichenproblems untersucht, das sich auf die SWF auswirkt, und dabei ein tieferes Verständnis seines Ursprungs erlangt. Die vorliegende Arbeit ist in vier Kapitel unterteilt. Das erste Kapitel führt VMC und die SWF mit besonderer Ausrichtung auf fermionische Systeme ein. Kapitel 2 skizziert die Literatur über das Phasendiagramm von Wasserstoff bei ultrahohem Druck. Das dritte Kapitel präsentiert die Implementierungen unseres VMC Programms und die erhaltenen Ergebnisse. Zum Abschluss fasst Kapitel 4 unsere Bestrebungen zur Lösung des zur SWF zugehörigen Vorzeichenproblems zusammen.

The presented study aimed to evaluate the productive and physiological behavior of a 2D multileader apple training systems in the Italian environment both investigating the possibility to increase yield and precision crop load management resolution. Another objective was to find valuable thinning thresholds guaranteeing high yields and matching fruit market requirements. The thesis consists in three studies carried out in a Pink Lady®- Rosy Glow apple orchard trained as a planar multileader training system (double guyot). Fruiting leaders (uprights) dimension, crop load, fruit quality, flower and physiological (leaf gas exchanges and fruit growth rate) data were collected and analysed. The obtained results found that uprights present dependence among each other and as well as a mutual support during fruit development. However, individual upright fruit load and upright’s fruit load distribution on the tree (~ plant crop load) seems to define both upright independence from the other, and single upright crop load effects on the final fruit quality production. Correlations between fruit load and harvest fruit size were found and thanks to that valuable thinning thresholds, based on different vegetative parameters, were obtained. Moreover, it comes out that an upright’s fruit load random distribution presents a widening of those thinning thresholds, keeping un-altered fruit quality. For this reason, uprights resulted a partially physiologically-dependent plant unit. Therefore, if considered and managed as independent, then no major problems on final fruit quality and production occurred. This partly confirmed the possibility to shift crop load management to single upright. The finding of the presented studies together with the benefits coming from multileader planar training systems suggest a high potentiality of the 2D multileader training systems to increase apple production sustainability and profitability for Italian apple orchard, while easing the advent of automation in fruit production.
