The X-ray crystal structures of 4-butyl-1,2-diphenylpyrazolidine-3,5-dione (phenylbutazone)(I). and its 2 : 1 complex (II) with piperazine have been determined by direct methods and the structures refined to R 0.096 (2 300 observed reflections measured by diffractometer) and 0.074 (2 494 observed reflections visuallyestimated). Crystals are monoclinic, space group P21/c; for (I)a= 21.695(4), b= 5.823(2), c= 27.881(4)Å, = 108.06 (10)°, Z= 8, and for (II)a= 8.048(4), b= 15.081(4), c= 15.583(7)Å, = 95.9(3)°, Z= 2. The two crystallographically independant molecules in the structure of (I) are similar except for the conformation of the butyl group, which is disordered in one of the molecules. In the pyrazolidinedione group, the two C–C bonds are single and the two C–O bonds double. The two nitrogen atoms in the five-membered ring are pyramidal with the attached phenyl groups lying on the opposite sides of the mean plane of the ring. The phenylbutazone molecule in (II) exists as a negative ion owing to deprotonation of C-4. C-4 is therefore trigonal and the orientation of the Bu group with respect to the pyrazolidinedione group is considerably different from that in (I); there is also considerable electron delocalization along the C–O and C–C bonds. These changes in geometry and electronic structure may relate to biological activity. The doubly charged cationic piperazine molecule exists in the chair form with the nitrogen atoms at the apices. The crystal structure of (II) is stabilized by ionic interactions and N–H O hydrogen bonds.

The present work reveals the synthesis and antiproliferative effect of a series of 2, 3 disubstituted 4-thiazolidinone analogues on human leukemic cells. The chemical structures of newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and mass spectral analysis. Compound methyl 3-methoxy-4-(4-oxo-3-(5-(piperazin-1-yl)pyridin-2-yl)thiazolidin-2-yl)be nzoate (5) displayed potent activity (IC50 9.71, 15.24 and 19.29 mu M) against Nalm6, K562, Jurkat cells. Cell cycle analysis and mitochondrial membrane potential further confirmed that compound 5 is cytotoxic and able to induce cell death. (C) 2014 Elsevier Masson SAS. All rights reserved.

Most nanofiltration (NF) membranes are composite and have a polyamide thin film prepared by interfacial polymerization. Their performances mainly correlate the structure of the thin film and monomers used for its preparation. In this work, a novel thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membrane was successfully prepared from 3,3',5,5'-biphenyl tetraacyl chloride (mm-BTEC) and piperazine (PIP) through interfacial polymerization. Attenuated reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) and X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy (XPS) were used to characterize the chemical composition of the membrane surface. The membrane performance was optimized by studying preparation parameters including monomer concentration, reaction time, and pH of aqueous phase.

A one-pot reaction of [Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and piperazine] with NH4SCN/NaSCN in water-methanol (1:1) solvent leads to two polymorphs of [Co(SCN)(4)(ppz-H)(2)] (ppz, piperazine) (I and II). X-ray crystal structure reveals both have same space group but the differences in the alignment of pendant SCN- leads to two polymorphs. In I, trifurcated N-H...S hydrogen bonding plays a prominent role in crystal packing leading to S...S interactions between SCN fragments but in II, no such trifurcation arises and thereby the crystal packing occurs through hydrogen bonding interactions only leading to a distinctly different network topology. TG/DSC and FT-IR study reveal they are enantiotropically related. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The carbonyl complexes [WCl(CO)(3)(bipy) (HgCl)] (1), [Fe(CO)(4)(HgCl)(2)] (2) and W(CO)(6)] (3) were immobilized on a silica gel surface organofunctionalized with piperazine groups. The products obtained were studied by IR spectroscopy and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The IR data show that the immobilization of heterobimetallic compounds 1 and 2, on the functionalized surface, occurred through the mercury atom, while for 3 the displacement of one CO group by the nitrogen of a piperazine molecule was observed. The data obtained from SAXS indicate that particles have a uniform size and reveal suitable modifications on the functionalized surface after immobilization of metal carbonyl complexes. The average intermolecular distance (l(ij)) for piperazine ligands on support is 8.7 Angstrom, for the metal carbonyl complex 1 it is 18.8 Angstrom, for complex 2 it is 16.2 Angstrom and for complex 3 it is 15.3 Angstrom. Introduction and Aims Wastewater analysis provides a non-intrusive way of measuring drug use within a population. We used this approach to determine daily use of conventional illicit drugs [cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)] and emerging illicit psychostimulants (benzylpiperazine, mephedrone and methylone) in two consecutive years (2010 and 2011) at an annual music festival. Design and Methods Daily composite wastewater samples, representative of the festival, were collected from the on-site wastewater treatment plant and analysed for drug metabolites. Data over 2 years were compared using Wilcoxon matched-pair test. Data from 2010 festival were compared with data collected at the same time from a nearby urban community using equivalent methods. Results Conventional illicit drugs were detected in all samples whereas emerging illicit psychostimulants were found only on specific days. The estimated per capita consumption of MDMA, cocaine and cannabis was similar between the two festival years. Statistically significant (P < 0.05; Z = −2.0–2.2) decreases were observed in use of methamphetamine and one emerging illicit psychostimulant (benzyl piperazine). Only consumption of MDMA was elevated at the festival compared with the nearby urban community. Discussion and Conclusions Rates of substance use at this festival remained relatively consistent over two monitoring years. Compared with the urban community, drug use among festival goers was only elevated for MDMA, confirming its popularity in music settings. Our study demonstrated that wastewater analysis can objectively capture changes in substance use at a music setting without raising major ethical issues. It would potentially allow effective assessments of drug prevention strategies in such settings in the future.

The development of a simple method of coating a semi-permanent phospholipid layer onto a capillary for electrochromatography use was the focus of this study. The work involved finding good coating conditions, stabilizing the phospholipid coating, and examining the effect of adding divalent cations, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and polyethylene glycol (PEG)-lipids on the stability of the coating. Since a further purpose was to move toward more biological membrane coatings, the capillaries were also coated with cholesterol-containing liposomes and liposomes of red blood cell ghost lipids. Liposomes were prepared by extrusion, and large unilamellar vesicles with a diameter of about 100 nm were obtained. Zwitterionic phosphatidylcholine (PC) was used as a basic component, mainly 1-palmitoyl-2-oleyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) but also eggPC and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC). Different amounts of sphingomyelin, bovine brain phosphatidylserine, and cholesterol were added to the PC. The stability of the coating in 40 mM N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N’-(2-ethanesulfonic acid) (HEPES) solution at pH 7.4 was studied by measuring the electroosmotic flow and by separating neutral steroids, basic proteins, and low-molar-mass drugs. The presence of PC in the coating solution was found to be essential to achieving a coating. The stability of the coating was improved by the addition of negative phosphatidylserine, cholesterol, divalent cations, or PEGylated lipids, and by working in the gel-state region of the phospholipid. Study of the effect on the PC coating of divalent metal ions calcium, magnesium, and zinc showed a molar ratio of 1:3 PC/Ca2+ or PC/Mg2+ to give increased rigidity to the membrane and the best coating stability. The PEGylated lipids used in the study were sterically stabilized commercial lipids with covalently attached PEG chains. The vesicle size generally decreased when PEGylated lipids of higher molar mass were present in the vesicle. The predominance of discoidal micelles over liposomes increased PEG chain length and the average size of the vesicles thus decreased. In the capillary electrophoresis (CE) measurements a highly stable electroosmotic flow was achieved with 20% PEGylated lipid in the POPC coating dispersion, the best results being obtained for disteroyl PEG (3000) conjugates. The results suggest that smaller particles (discoidal micelles) result in tighter packing and better shielding of silanol groups on the silica wall. The effect of temperature on the coating stability was investigated by using DPPC liposomes at temperatures above (45 C) and below (25 C) the main phase transition temperature. Better results were obtained with DPPC in the more rigid gel state than in the fluid state: the electroosmotic flow was heavily suppressed and the PC coating was stabilized. Also dispersions of DPPC with 0−30 mol% of cholesterol and sphingomyelin in different ratios, which more closely resemble natural membranes, resulted in stable coatings. Finally, the CE measurements revealed that a stable coating is formed when capillaries are coated with liposomes of red blood cell ghost lipids.

New metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) [Ni(C12N2H10)(H2O)][C6H3(COO)2(COOH)] (I), [Co2(H2O)6][C6H3(COO)3]2·(C4N2H12)(H2O)2 (II), [Ni2(H2O)6][C6H3(COO)3]2·(C4N2H12)(H2O)2 (III), [Ni(C13N2H14)(H2O)][C6H3(COO)2(COOH)] (IV), [Ni3(H2O)8][C6H3(COO)3] (V) and [Co(C4N2H4)(H2O)][C6H3(COO)3] (VI) {C6H3(COOH)3 = trimesic acid, C12N2H10 = 1,10-phenanthroline, C4N2H12 = piperazine dication, C13N2H14 = 1,3-bis(4-pyridyl)propane and C4N2H4 = pyrazine} have been synthesized by using an interface between two immiscible solvents, water and cyclohexanol. The compounds are constructed from the connectivity between the octahedral M2+ (M = Ni, Co) ions coordinated by oxygen atoms of carboxylate groups and water molecules and/or by nitrogen atoms of the ligand amines and the carboxylate units to form a variety of structures of different dimensionality. Strong hydrogen bonds of the type O-H···O are present in all the compounds, which give rise to supramolecularly organized higher-dimensional structures. In some cases ··· interactions are also observed. Magnetic studies indicate weak ferromagnetic interactions in I, IV and V and weak antiferromagnetic interactions in the other compounds (II, III and VI). All the compounds have been characterized by a variety of techniques.

A new dinuclear nickel(II) complex, [Ni-2(LH2)(H2O)(2)(OH)(NO3)](NO3)(3) (1), of an ``end-off'' compartmental ligand 2,6-bis(N-ethylpiperazine-iminomethyl)-4-methyl-phenolato, has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The X-ray single crystal structure analysis shows that the piperazine moieties assume the expected chair conformation and are protonated. The complex 1 exhibits versatile catalytic activities of biological significance, viz. catecholase, phosphatase, and DNA cleavage activities, etc. The catecholase activity of the complex observed is very dependent on the nature of the solvent. In acetonitrile medium, the complex is inactive to exhibit catecholase activity. On the other hand, in methanol, it catalyzes not only the oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) but also tetrachlorocatechol (TCC), a catechol which is very difficult to oxidize, under aerobic conditions. UV vis spectroscopic investigation shows that TCC oxidation proceeds through the formation of an intermediate. The intermediate has been characterized by an electron spray ionizaton-mass spectrometry study, which suggests a bidentate rather than a monodentate mode of TCC coordination in that intermediate, and this proposition have been verified by density functional theory calculation. The complex also exhibits phosphatase (with substrate p-nitrophenylphosphate) and DNA cleavage activities. The DNA cleavage activity exhibited by complex 1 most probably proceeds through a hydroxyl radical pathway. The bioactivity study suggests the possible applications of complex 1 as a site specific recognition of DNA and/or as an anticancer agent.
