Qualitative and quantitative measurements of biomass components dissolved in the phosphonium ionic liquids (ILs), trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride ([P66614]Cl) and tributylmethylphosphonium methylsulphate ([P4441]MeSO 4), are obtained using attenuated total reflectance-FTIR. Absorption bands related to cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin dissolution monitored in situ in biomass-IL mixtures indicate lignin dissolution in both ILs and some holocellulose dissolution in the hydrophilic [P4441]MeSO 4. The kinetics of lignin dissolution reported here indicate that while dissolution in the hydrophobic IL [P66614]Cl appears to follow an accepted mechanism of acid catalyzed -aryl ether cleavage, dissolution in the hydrophilic IL [P4441]MeSO 4 does not appear to follow this mechanism and may not be followed by condensation reactions (initiated by reactive ketones). The measurement of lignin dissolution in phosphonium ILs based on absorbance at 1510 cm 1 has demonstrated utility. When coupled with the gravimetric Klason lignin method, ATR-FTIR study of reaction mixtures can lead to a better understanding of the delignification process. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

This article reports on the cleavage of lignin ß-aryl ether bonds in sugarcane bagasse by the ionic liquid (IL) trihexyl tetradecyl phosphonium chloride [P66614] Cl, in the presence of catalytic amounts of mineral acid fca. 0.4%). The deligniflcation process of bagasse was studied over a range of temperatures (120°C to 150°C) by monitoring the production of ß-ketones (indicative of cleavage of ß-aryl ethers) using FTIR spectroscopy and by compositional analysis of the undissolved fractions. Maximum deligniflcation was obtained at 150°C, with 52% of lignin removed from the original lignin content of bagasse. No deligniflcation was observed in the absence of acid, which suggests that the reaction is acid catalyzed with the IL solubilizing the lignin fragments. The rate of deligniflcation was significantly higher at 150°C, suggesting that crossing the glass transition temperature of lignin effects greater freedom of rotation about the propanoid carbon-carbon bonds and leads to increased cleavage of ß-aryl ethers. An attempt has been made to propose a probable mechanism of deligniflcation of bagasse with the phosphonuim IL. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

A series of silica-based organic–inorganic hybrid materials were prepared by the sol–gel process for Cr(III) and Cr(VI) adsorption. These silica materials generally had high surface areas, good physical–chemical stability and high thermal stability. Trialkylmethylammonium bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate ([A336][C272]) and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis 2,4,4-trimethylpentylphosphinate (Cyphos IL 104) were explored as porogens to prepare porous silica and as extractants to extract chromium ions. Cyphos IL 104 and [A336][C272] functionalized silica sorbents (SG-2, SG-5) can be effectively used for the removal of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions by adjusting pH values, whereas trialkylmethylammonium chloride (Aliquat 336) and bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272) functionalized silica sorbents (SG-3, SG-4) can only be used for the removal of the single chromium species, Cr(VI) or Cr(III).

A convenient microwave method in preparation of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) using an ionic liquid, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide, [P-66614][NTf2], as a green solvent is described in this paper. To the best of our knowledge, there is no report for synthesizing any nanoparticle using this ionic liquid. Trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis{(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl}-imide has low interface tension and thus it can enhance the nucleation rate, which is favorable to the formation of smaller ZnONPs. The fabricated ZnONPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis spectroscopy. The XRD pattern reveals that the ZnONPs have hexagonal wurtzite structure. The strong intensity and narrow width of ZnO diffraction peaks indicate that the resulting nanoparticles are of high crystallinity. The synthesized ZnONPs show direct band gap of 3.43 eV. The UV-vis absorption spectrum of ZnONPs dispersed in ethylene glycol at room temperature revealed a blue-shifted onset of absorption. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

To develop a chemical inhibitor that can efficiently suppress coal oxidation, nine tetraalkylphosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) and one imidazolium-based IL [1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([AMIm]Cl)] were examined as additives. These ILs were used to treat and investigate the inhibitory effect on the oxidation activity and the structure of lignite coal. Characterization using thermogravimetric analysis showed that phosphonium-based ILs are able to inhibit coal oxidation up to 400 degrees C with the tributylethylphosphonium diethylphosphate ([P-4,P-4,P-4,P-2][DEP]) found to be the most effective. In contrast to the tetraalkylphosphonium-based ILs, inhibition using [AMIm]Cl was only found to be effective at temperatures below 250 degrees C, indicating that the tetraallcylphosphonium-based ILs may be more suitable for the future application of suppressing coal spontaneous combustion over a wide range of temperatures. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic data showed that the various functional groups change in the coal following IL treatment, which are a decrease in the minerals and hydrogen bonds in all treated coals, while decreased aliphatic hydrocarbon and increased carbonyl bonds only appeared in some samples. During the oxidation of coal, the decomposition of aliphatic hydrocarbon groups is inhibited and the formation of carbonyl groups is delayed, so that the evolved gas concentration decreased, as shown by the temperature-programmed oxidation-mass spectrometry results. The deployment of the [P-4,P-4,P-4,P-2][ DEP] and tributylmethylphosphonium methylsulfate Its as additives also show good inhibitory effect on coal oxidation over the temperature range studied, and a relatively stronger interaction between [P-4,P-4,P-4,P-2] [DEP] and coal is demonstrated by the additive model.

Microelectrode voltammetry is used to study the electrochemical reduction of dioxygen, O-2, in the room-temperature ionic liquid trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium trifluorotris(pentafluoroethyl)phosphate [P6,6,6,14][FAP]. The nature of the unusual voltammetric waves is quantitatively modeled via digital simulation with the aim of clarifying apparent inconsistencies in the literature. The reduction is shown to proceed via a two-electron reaction and involve the likely capture of a proton from the solvent system. The oxidative voltammetric signals seen at fast scan rates are interpreted as resulting from the reoxidation of HO2 center dot. In the presence of large amounts of dissolved carbon dioxide the reductive currents decrease by a factor of ca. two, consistent with the trapping of the superoxide radical, O-2(center dot), intermediate in the two-electron reduction process.

The use of a hydrated phosphonium ionic liquid, [P(CH<inf>2</inf>OH)<inf>4</inf>]Cl, for the extraction of microalgæ lipids for biodiesel production, was evaluated using two microalgæ species, Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis oculata. The ionic liquid extraction was compared to the conventional Soxhlet, and Bligh & Dyer, methods, giving the highest extraction efficiency in the case of C. vulgaris, at 8.1%. The extraction from N. oculata achieved the highest lipid yield for Bligh & Dyer (17.3%), while the ionic liquid extracted 12.8%. Nevertheless, the ionic liquid extraction showed high affinity to neutral/saponifiable lipids, resulting in the highest fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs)-biodiesel yield (4.5%) for C. vulgaris. For N. oculata, the FAMEs yield of the ionic liquid and Bligh & Dyer extraction methods were similar (>8%), and much higher than for Soxhlet (<5%). The ionic liquid extraction proved especially suitable for lipid extraction from wet biomass, giving even higher extraction yields than from dry biomass, 14.9% and 12.8%, respectively (N. oculata). Remarkably, the overall yield of FAMEs was almost unchanged, 8.1% and 8.0%, for dry and wet biomass. The ionic liquid extraction process was also studied at ambient temperature, varying the extraction time, giving 75% of lipid and 93% of FAMEs recovery after thirty minutes, as compared to the extraction at 100 °C for one day. The recyclability study demonstrated that the ionic liquid was unchanged after treatment, and was successfully reused. The ionic liquid used is best described as [P(CH<inf>2</inf>OH)<inf>4</inf>]Cl·2H<inf>2</inf>O, where the water is not free, but strongly bound to the ions.

A range of liquid rare-earth chlorometallate complexes with alkyl-phosphonium cations, [P666 14]+, has been synthesised and characterised. EXAFS confirmed the predominant liquid-state speciation of the [LnCl6]3- of the series with Ln = Nd, Eu, Dy. The crystal structure of the shorter-alkyl-chain cation analogue [P4444]+ has been determined and exhibits a very large unit cell. The luminescence properties, with visible light emissions of the liquid Tb, Eu, Pr and Sm and the NIR emissions for the Nd and Er compounds were determined. The effective magnetic moments were measured and fitted for the Nd, Tb, Ho, Dy, Gd and Er samples.

In this paper the temperature and pressure induced paramagnetic switching of cobalt (II) complex in binary mixture of phosphonium based ionic liquid [P6,6,6,14]SCN and [Co(NCS)2], is reported. This arises from a structural change in the coordination of the cobalt (II) center from tetrahedral [Co(NCS)4]2- to octahedral [Co(NCS)6]4- when mobile thiocyanate ions are added. These properties are reflected in the abrupt change of conductivity behavior of the magnetic ionic liquid. Therefore, as demonstrated herein the reversible switching in coordination of cobalt from tetrahedral to octahedral can be easily monitored at ambient as well as elevated pressure by tracking the dc-conductivity changes.

31P, 19F and 13C solid state NMR analysis has been used to investigate the intercalation/de-intercalation of both anions and cations in electrochemically synthesized polypyrrole films. Use of a phosphonium-based ionic liquid, tri(hexyl)(tetradecyl)phosphonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide, allows the separate detection of the cation and anion by analysis of the phosphorous and fluorine resonances, respectively. Initial results indicate the incorporation of both cations and anions during film growth in the ionic liquid. There is a notable change in the 31P chemical shift of the cation on incorporation into the film, consistent with a significant change in environment compared to the pure ionic liquid. Despite its large size, the phosphonium cation can be completely expelled from the film by oxidation.

Phosphonium cation based ionic liquids (ILs) have become of interest due to their unique chemical and electrochemical stability as well as their promising tribological properties. At the same time, interest has also grown in the use of phosphate and phosphinate based ionic liquids for corrosion protection of reactive metals. In this work we describe the synthesis and characterization of six novel ionic liquids based on the tetraalkylphosponium cation coupled with organophosphate and organophosphinate anions and their sulfur analogues. The conductivity and viscosity of these ILs has been measured and discussed in terms of the nature of the interactions, effect of anion basicity and the extent of ionic character. The reaction of the IL with a ZE41 magnesium aerospace alloy surface is also demonstrated.

The performance of a series of novel room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) based on the trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphoniumcation (P66614 +) and a number of novel anions have been studied in pin-on-disk tests using a 100Cr6 steel ball on AA2024 aluminium disks.

The anions coupled to the (P66614 +) cation include diphenyl phosphate (DPP-), dibutyl phosphate (DBP-), bis (2,4,4-trimethyl pentyl) phosphinate (M3PPh-) and bis(2-ethyl hexyl) phosphate (BEH-).

More traditional anions such as bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl) amide (NTf2 -) and bromide (Br-) were also investigated. Experiments were conducted at various loads to assess the IL film forming abilities.

The results suggest that the structure of the anion is important in forming a surface film that reduces the friction and wear of the aluminium disk. At 30N five of the six ILs tested showed a 30-90% reduction in wear, as determined from wear scar depth measurements, compared to fully formulated diesel oil.

The IL lubricant with a diphenyl phosphate anion achieved the lowest wear coefficient, showing a better performance than a typical fluorine-containing IL anion, NTf2.

To further investigate wear mechanisms and surface interactions the wear scars were analysed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
