This study collected a sample of YouTube videos in which parents recorded their young children utilizing mobile touchscreen devices. Focusing on the more frequently viewed and highly-discussed videos, the paper analyzes the ways in which babies’ ‘digital dexterity’ is coded and understood in terms of contested notions of ‘naturalness’, and how the display of these capabilities is produced for a networked public. This reading of the ‘baby-iPad encounter’ helps expand existing scholarly concepts such as parental mediation and technology domestication. Recruiting several theoretical frameworks, the paper seeks to go beyond concerns of mobile devices and immobile children by analyzing children’s digital dexterity not just as a kind of mobility, but also as a set of reciprocal mobilizations that work across domestic, virtual and publically networked spaces.

We investigate the ways young children’s use of mobile touchscreen interfaces is both understood and shaped by parents through the production of YouTube videos and discussions in associated comment threads. This analysis expands on, and departs from, theories of parental mediation, which have traditionally been framed through a media effects approach in analyzing how parents regulate their children’s use of broadcast media, such as television, within family life. We move beyond the limitations of an effects framing through more culturally and materially oriented theoretical lenses of mediation, considering the role mobile interfaces now play in the lives of infants through analysis of the ways parents intermediate between domestic spaces and networked publics. We propose the concept of intermediation, which builds on insights from critical interface studies as well as cultural industries literature to help account for these expanded aspects of digital parenting. Here, parents are not simply moderating children’s media use within the home, but instead operating as an intermediary in contributing to online representations and discourses of children’s digital culture. This intermediary role of parents engages with ideological tensions in locating notions of “naturalness:” the iPad’s gestural interface or the child’s digital dexterity.

Phobic and anxiety disorders are one of the most common, if not the most common and debilitating psychopathological conditions found among children and adolescents. As a result, a treatment research literature has accumulated showing the efficacy of cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) for reducing anxiety disorders in youth. This dissertation study compared a CBT with parent and child (i.e., PCBT) and child group CBT (i.e., GCBT). These two treatment approaches were compared due to the recognition that a child’s context has an effect on the development, course, and outcome of childhood psychopathology and functional status. The specific aims of this dissertation were to examine treatment specificity and mediation effects of parent and peer contextual variables. The sample consisted of 183 youth and their mothers. Research questions were analyzed using analysis of variance for treatment outcome, and structural equation modeling, accounting for clustering effects, for treatment specificity and mediation effects. Results indicated that both PCBT and GCBT produced positive treatment outcomes across all indices of change (i.e., clinically significant improvement, anxiety symptom reduction) and across all informants (i.e., youths and parents) with no significant differences between treatment conditions. Results also showed partial treatment specific effects of positive peer relationships in GCBT. PCBT also showed partial treatment specific effects of parental psychological control. Mediation effects were only observed in GCBT; positive peer interactions mediated treatment response. The results support the use CBT with parents and peers for treating childhood anxiety. The findings’ implications are further discussed in terms of the need to conduct further meditational treatment outcome designs in order to continue to advance theory and research in child and anxiety treatment.

Cette thèse de doctorat a pour objectif d’examiner de quelles manières le rôle parental influence la consommation d’alcool des femmes et des hommes et plus précisément, si les relations dynamiques entre le rôle parental, les circonstances au sein desquelles il est mis en acte et les contextes immédiats de consommation permettent d’expliquer les différentes façons individuelles de consommer de l’alcool. Cette étude repose sur le constat qu’en alcoologie, il existe une tendance à considérer l’acteur et l’action comme étant détachés de leur cadre social immédiat. Conséquemment, il existe des limites importantes aux modèles permettant d’expliquer les mécanismes par lesquels les rôles sociaux influencent la consommation d’alcool. Afin d’avoir une meilleure compréhension sociologique de la consommation d’alcool, cette thèse propose un cadre théorique qui insiste fortement sur la nécessité de tenir compte de la situation. L’acteur agit en fonction de certaines circonstances (perception de conflit de rôles) au sein desquelles son rôle est mis en acte. L’action de boire est dépendante du contexte (caractéristiques spatiales, temporelles, symboliques et relationnelles) au sein duquel l’action se déroule. L’hypothèse générale de recherche stipule que pour comprendre la relation entre les rôles et la consommation d’alcool, il faut situer à la fois l’acteur et l’action. La validité empirique du cadre théorique a été testée à partir d’une analyse quantitative des données de l’enquête GENACIS Canada (GENder Alcohol and Culture: an International Study) ainsi que des données de l’Enquête sur les Toxicomanies au Canada. La présentation des résultats des analyses prend la forme de trois articles soumis pour publication. Les données analysées révèlent le bien-fondé du cadre de théorique proposé. Situer l’action a permis de constater que les contextes de consommation sont un médiateur de la relation entre le rôle parental et la consommation d’alcool et plus spécifiquement, que les parents boivent moins fréquemment de façon excessive que les non-parents parce qu’ils boivent dans des lieux différents. Situer l’action a aussi révélé que les femmes et les hommes ont tendance à adopter des comportements de boire qui s’accordent au contexte immédiat, plutôt qu’à la position qu’ils occupent. Par contre, observer les circonstances individuelles au sein desquelles le rôle parental est mis en acte n’a pas permis d’améliorer notre compréhension de la relation à l’étude. Les évidences scientifiques apportées par cette thèse de doctorat ouvrent la porte au développement de mesures préventives environnementales qui visent le contexte de l’action plutôt que l’acteur, pour limiter la consommation excessive d’alcool des femmes et des hommes.

La majorité des études qui ont cherché à identifier les déterminants d’un développement harmonieux chez l’enfant ont considéré l’impact des variables maternelles ou paternelles sur ce dernier, mais rares sont celles qui ont tenu compte des deux parents, des influences et des interactions entre ceux-ci, ou même de la relation qu’ils entretiennent en tant que coparents. La présente recherche a pour objectif de pallier à ces faiblesses afin de mieux cerner les déterminants de l’engagement parental des mères et des pères, ainsi que de l’adaptation de l’enfant. Dans ce but, 70 familles (père, mère et enfant) ont été recrutées par l’intermédiaire de centres de la petite enfance (CPE) de la région de Montréal, pour former un échantillon qui comporte 38 garçons et 32 filles âgés de 34 à 70 mois. Les parents participants ont été visités à deux reprises par un assistant de recherche pour la complétion de questionnaires qui ont permis d’évaluer l’engagement parental, la relation coparentale et l’adaptation de l’enfant. On observe plusieurs relations significatives entre l’engagement parental et différentes dimensions de la relation coparentale, surtout dans les domaines traditionnellement réservés aux mères. La coparentalité et l’engagement parental apparaissent aussi reliés à la compétence sociale de l’enfant, mais pas à l’anxiété/retrait de ce dernier, ni à son agressivité/irritabilité. Des analyses de régression hiérarchique ont été effectuées afin d’expliquer la variance l’engagement parental par les caractéristiques de la relation coparentale, puis la variance de l’adaptation de l’enfant par la relation coparentale et l’engagement parental des mères et des pères. Ces analyses ont notamment permis de constater que certaines caractéristiques du père modèrent la relation entre les croyances parentales de la mère et la participation relative des deux parents au soutien émotionnel, aux jeux et à l’introduction de nouveauté. Elles ont également permis de cerner une relation de médiation, dans laquelle les croyances paternelles sont positivement associées à la chaleur paternelle, qui est elle-même positivement associée à la compétence sociale de l’enfant. La discussion met en évidence l’importance d’étudier l’engagement parental et l’adaptation de l’enfant dans un cadre systémique, qui s’intéresse à la fois aux caractéristiques des mères et des pères, à la relation entre les parents et aux influences que mère et père ont l’un sur l’autre.

Este estudio se basa en una mediación familiar adelantada con una pareja en proceso de separación conyugal; la mediación es descrita con el propósito de ilustrar la aplicación operativa del marco teórico y la metodología propuesta por el Modelo Relacional Simbólico, haciendo especial referencia al genograma, instrumento que ofrece la posibilidad de acceder a la dimensión simbólica y plurigeracional de la relación, de una manera en que la pareja descubre, ratifica y potencializa recursos, y proyecta el paso de una condición relacional a otra, facilitando la reconfiguración y reorganización de los vínculos familiares.

The main objective of the study was to investigate the relationship between parent-related, acculturation-related, and substance use-related variables found within individual, familial/parental, peer and school adolescent ecological domains, in a clinical sample (i.e. adolescents who met criteria for a Diagnostic Statistical Manual-IV [DSMIV] clinical diagnosis of substance abuse/dependence) of Hispanic adolescents from Miami, Florida. ^ The sample for this study consisted of 94 adolescent-mother pairs. The adolescent sample was 65% male, and 35% female, with a mean age of 15 years. More than half of the adolescents were born in the United States (60%) and had resided in the U.S. for an average of 12 years; 80% of the caregivers (primarily mothers) were foreign-born and lived in the U.S. for an average of 21 years. ^ Correlation and hierarchical regression were used to answer the research questions. The findings indicate that the hypothesized model and corresponding anticipated effect of the relationship between parental school and peer involvement on adolescents’ frequency of alcohol, marijuana and cocaine use was not supported by the data. Parental “acculturation-related” variables did not explain any of the variance in adolescent substance use frequency in this sample. Mediation and moderation models were not supported either. However, some interesting relationships were found: ^ The larger the acculturation gap, the lower the parental involvement in school tended to be (r = -.21, p < .05). Adolescents who experienced a greater acculturation gap with their parents (-.81, p >.01) had an earlier onset of marijuana (-.33, p < .01) and cocaine use (r = -.24, p <.01). The less acculturated parents experienced more parenting stress (r = -.31, p = < .01). Attachment was positively associated with parental peer involvement (r = .24, p < .05) and inversely associated with parenting acculturative stress (r = -.24, p < .05). Attachment was also positively associated with marijuana (r = .39, p < .01) and cocaine use (r = .33, p < .01). Adolescent males reported being more attached to their mothers when compared to adolescent females (r = .22, p >.05), they also reported using marijuana more frequently than females (.21, p >.05). ^

The present study investigated the efficacies of Individual CBT (ICBT), Parent Relationship Skill Training (RLST, which targets increasing parental acceptance of youth and increasing autonomy granting) and Parent Reinforcement Skills Training (RLST, which targets increasing parental positive reinforcement and decreasing negative reinforcement). The specific aims were to examine treatment specificity and mediation effects of parenting variables. ICBT was used as a baseline comparison condition. The sample consisted of 253 youth (ages 5-16 years; M = 9.38; SD = 2.42) and their parents. To examine treatment outcome and specificity, the data were analyzed using analysis of variance within a structural equation modeling framework. Mediation was analyzed via structural equation modeling using MPlus. Results indicated that ICBT, RLST, and RFST produced positive treatment outcomes across all indices of change (i.e., clinically significant improvement, anxiety symptom reduction) and across all informants (i.e., youths and parents). RLST was associated with incremental reduction in youth anxiety symptoms beyond ICBT, as per youth report. Treatment specificity effects were found for participants in RFST in terms of parental reinforcement, as per parent report only. Treatment mediation was not found for any of the hypothesized parenting variables (i.e., parental acceptance, parental autonomy granting, parental reinforcement). The results support the use of CBT involving only the youth and the parent and youth together for treating youth anxiety. The findings’ implications are further discussed in terms of the need to conduct further meditational treatment outcome designs in order to continue to advance theory and research in youth anxiety treatment.

The purposes of the present multistudy were to develop and provide initial construct validity for measures based on the model of parental involvement in sport (Study 1) and examine structural relationships among the constructs of the model (Study 2). In Study 1 (nparents = 342, nathletes = 223), a confirmatory factor analysis was used to verify the psychometric properties of the measures. Content and construct validity were evaluated, as well individual and composite reliability. Multi-group analysis with two independent samples provided evidence of factorial invariance. In Study 2 (nparents = 754, nathletes = 438), structural equation modeling analysis supported the hypothesised model in which athletes’ perceptions of parents’ behaviours mediated the relationship between parents’ reported behaviours and the athletes’ psychological variables conducive to their achievement in sport. The findings provide support for the parental involvement in sport model and demonstrate the role of perceptions of parents’ behaviours on young athletes’ cognitions in sport.
