The [Ru(3)O(H(3)CCO(2))(6)(py)(2)(L)]PF(6) clusters, where L=methanol or dimethyl sulfoxide, can be activated by peroxide or oxygen donor species, such as tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) or iodosylbenzene (PhIO), respectively, generating reactive intermediates of the type [Ru(3)(IV,IV,III)=0](+). In this way, they catalyse the oxidation of cyclohexane or cyclohexene by TBHP and PhIO, via oxygen atom transfer, rather than by the alternative oxygen radical mechanism characteristic of this type of complexes. In addition to their ability to perform efficient olefin epoxydation catalysis, these clusters also promote the cleavage of the C-H bond in hydrocarbons, resembling the oxidation catalysis by metal porphyrins. Cationic heterobimetallic complexes 5–7 [(PPh3)2Pt(μ-edt)MClCp′)]BF4 (edt=−S(CH2)2S−; 5: M=Rh and Cp′=η5-C5H5; 6: M=Rh and Cp′=η5-C5Me5 and 7: M=Ir and Cp′=η5-C5Me5) were prepared by reaction of [Pt(edt)(PPh3)2] with [Cp′ClM(μ-Cl)2MClCp′] in THF in the presence of two equivalents of AgBF4. The crystalline structure of 5 was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Cationic heterobimetallic complexes [(PPh3)2Pt(μ-S(CH2)2S)MClCp′)]BF4 (M=Rh, Ir) were prepared. The crystalline structure of [(PPh3)2Pt(μ-edt)RhClCp)]BF4 was determined by X-ray diffraction methods.

The [Mn(4)(IV)O(5)(terpy)(4)(H(2)O)(2)](6+) complex shows great potential for electrode modification by electropolymerization using cyclic voltammetry. The electropolymerization mechanism was based on the electron transfer between dx(2)-y(2) orbitals of the metallic center and p pi orbital of the ligand.

A novel supermolecule constituted by four mu(3)-oxo-triruthenium acetate clusters coordinated to manganese(III)-meso -tetra(4-pyridil)porphyrin acetate ([MnTPyP]CH3COO) has been synthesized. Characterization has been performed by UV-Vis and H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The electrochemical behavior (cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry) in N,N'-dimethylformamide has been analyzed in terms of five redox processes: three related to peripheral clusters (Ru-IV,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-III,Ru-III/Ru-III,Ru-II,Ru-II) and two centered on the Mn-porphyrin core ((MnP)-P-III/(MnP)-P-II/(MnP2-)-P-II). A direct comparison has been performed between MnTCP and MnTPyP as catalysts for the cyclooctene and cyclohexane oxidation reactions. The improved selectivity exhibited by the supramolecular catalyst for cyclohexane oxidation has been ascribed to electronic effects on the oxomanganese(V) porphyrin species induced by the four peripheral clusters, in the formal (RuRuRuIII)-Ru-IV-Ru-III oxidation state. Three oxo-bridged diiron(III) complexes of L-histidine and heterocyclic bases [Fe-2(mu-O)(L-his)(2)(B)(2)](ClO4)(2) (1-3), where B is 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy),1,10-phenanthroline (phen), dipyrido[3,2-d:2',3'-f]quinoxaline (dpq), were prepared and characterized. The bpy complex 1 was structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The molecular structure showed a {Fe-2(mu-O)} core in which iron(III) in a FeN4O2 coordination is bound to tridentate monoanionic L-histidine and bidentate bpy ligands. The Fe center dot center dot center dot Fe distance is similar to 3.5 angstrom. The Fe-O-Fe unit is essentially linear, giving a bond angle of similar to 172 degrees. The complexes showed irreversible cyclic voltammetric cathodic response near -0.1 V vs. SCE in H2O-0.1 M KCl. The binuclear units displayed antiferromagnetic interaction between two high-spin (S = 5/2) iron(III) centers giving a -J value of -110 cm(-1). The complexes showed good DNA binding propensity giving a binding constant value of similar to 10(5) M-1. Isothermal titration calorimetric data indicated single binding mode to the DNA. The binding was found to be driven by negative free energy change and enthalpy. The dpq complex 3 showed oxidative double-strand DNA cleavage on exposure to UV-A and visible light. The phen complex 2 displayed single-strand photocleavage of DNA. The DNA double-strand breaks were rationalized from theoretical molecular docking calculations. Mechanistic investigations showed formation of hydroxyl radicals as the reactive species through photodecarboxylation of the L-histidine ligand. The complexes exhibited good binding propensity to bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein in Tris-HCl/NaCl buffer medium. The dpq complex 3 showed UV-A light-induced site-specific oxidative BSA cleavage forming fragments of similar to 45 kDa and similar to 20 kDa molecular weights via SOH pathway.

Ruthenium red, a di-mu-oxo-bridged ruthenium complex, and its oxidised form, ruthenium brown, have been studied as possible homogeneous redox catalysts for the oxidation of water to O2 by Ce(IV) ions in H2SO4 and HCIO4. In both media the Ce(IV) ions oxidised the ruthenium red to brown and, with excess of Ce(IV), decomposed the ruthenium brown irreversibly to product(s) with three weak absorption bands at 390, 523 and 593 nm. Only in HCIO4 did the decomposition product(s) appear to act as a stable O2 catalyst. Spectral evidence tentatively suggests that the active catalyst may be a hydrolysed Ru(IV) polymeric species. The rate of catalysis was proportional to the initial concentration of ruthenium red/brown and the activation energy was determined as 36 +/- 1 kJ mol-1 over the temperature range ambient to ca. 50-degrees-C. At temperatures greater than 50-degrees-C the O2 catalyst undergoes an irreversible thermal decomposition reaction.

Dinuclear trioxidic [{VOL}(2)mu-O] (1-4) complexes were synthesized from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] with an equimolar amount of H2L [H2L is the general abbreviation of hydrazone ligands (H2L1-4) derived from the condensation of benzoyl hydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives] in acetone or CH2Cl2 or acetonitrile. These V2O3L2 complexes were also obtained from the reaction of VOSO4 with H2L in the presence of two equivalents sodium acetate in aqueous-methanolic (50% V/V) medium and also from the decomposition of [(VO)-O-IV(L)(bipy/phen)] complexes in CH2Cl2 Solution. Black monoclinic crystals of 2 and 4 with C2/c space group were obtained from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)], respectively, with H2L2 and H2L4 in acetone in which the respective ligands are bonded meridionally to vanadium in their fully deprotonated enol forms. The V-O bond lengths follow the order: V-O(oxo) < V-O(oxo-bridged) < V-O(phenolate) < V-O(enolate). Complexes (1-4) are diamagnetic exhibiting LMCT transition band near 380 nm in CH2Cl2 solution and they are electroactive displaying a quasi-reversible reduction peak in the 0.14-0.30 V versus SCE region. The and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values show linear relationships with the Hammett constant (sigma) of the substituents in the hydrazone ligands. These dinuclear complexes are converted to the corresponding mononuclear cis dioxo complexes K(H2O)(+)[(VO2)-O-V(L)](-) (5-8) and mixed-ligand [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes on reaction, respectively, with two equivalents KOH in methanol and two equivalents 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq) in CHCl3. Ascorbic acid reduces the dioxovanadium(V) complexes reversibly under aerobic condition. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The synthesis, characterisation, X-ray single crystal structures and magnetic properties of three new basal-apical mu(2)-1,1-azide-bridged complexes [(CuLN3)-N-1](2) (1), [(CuLN3)-N-2](2) (2) and [(CuLN3)-N-3](2) (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff-base blocking ligands {HL1 = N-[2-(ethylamino) ethyl] salicylaldimine; HL2 = 7-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one; HL3 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one} have been reported [complex 1: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.390(2), b = 7.512(2), c = 19.822(6) Angstrom, beta = 91.45(5)degrees; complex 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.070(9), b = 9.787(12), c = 15.743(17) A, beta = 98.467(10)degrees; complex 3: monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 5.884(7), b = 16.147(18), c = 11.901(12) Angstrom, beta = 90.050(10)degrees]. The structures consist of neutral dinuclear entities resulting from the pairing of two mononuclear units through end-on azide bridges connecting an equatorial position of one copper centre to an axial position of the other, The copper ions adopt a (4+1) square-based geometry in all the complexes. In complex 2, there is no inter-dimer hydrogen-bonding. However, complexes 1 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic-susceptibility measurements and magnetisation measurements at 2 K reveal that all three complexes have antiferromagnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Treatment of of (R,R)-N,N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine(H(2)L(1)) in methanol with aqueous NH(4)VO(3) solution in perchloric acid medium affords the mononuclear oxovanadium(V) complex [VOL(1)(MeOH)]-ClO(4) (1) as deep blue solid while the treatment of same solution of (R,R)-N,N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine(H(2)L(1)) with aqueous solution of VOSO(4) leads to the formation of di-(mu-oxo) bridged vanadium(V) complex [VO(2)L(2)](2) (2) as green solid where HL(2) = (R,R)-N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine. The ligand HL(2) is generated in situ by the hydrolysis of one of the imine bonds of HL(1) ligand during the course of formation of complex [VO(2)L(2)](2) (2). Both the compounds have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1 and 2 are to act as catalyst for the catalytic bromide oxidation and C-H bond oxidation in presence of hydrogen peroxide. The representative substrates 2,4-dimethoxy benzoic acid and para-hydroxy benzoic acids are brominated in presence of H(2)O(2) and KBr in acid medium using the above compounds as catalyst. The complexes are also used as catalyst for C-H bond activation of the representative hydrocarbons toluene, ethylbenzene and cyclohexane where hydrogen peroxide acts as terminal oxidant. The yield percentage and turnover number are also quite good for the above catalytic reaction. The oxidized products of hydrocarbons have been characterized by GC Analysis while the brominated products have been characterized by (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies.

The dissymmetrical naphthalene-bridged complexes [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*] (3; Cp* = η5-C5Me5, Cp′ = η5-C5H2-1,2,4-tBu3) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (4) were synthesized via a one-pot procedure from FeCl2(thf)1.5, Cp′K, KC10H8, and [Cp* FeCl(tmeda)] (tmeda = N,N,N′,N′- tetramethylethylenediamine) or [Cp*RuCl]4, respectively. The symmetrically substituted iron ruthenium complex [Cp*Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*] (5) bearing two Cp* ligands was prepared as a reference compound. Compounds 3−5 are diamagnetic and display similar molecular structures, where the metal atoms are coordinated to opposite sides of the bridging naphthalene molecule. Cyclic voltammetry and UV/vis spectroelectrochemistry studies revealed that neutral 3−5 can be oxidized to monocations 3+−5+ and dications 32+−52+. The chemical oxidation of 3 and 4 with [Cp2Fe]PF6 afforded the paramagnetic hexafluorophosphate salts [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)FeCp*]PF6 ([3]PF6) and [Cp′Fe(μ-C10H8)RuCp*]PF6 ([4]PF6), which were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques, including EPR and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy. The molecular structure of [4]PF6 was determined by X-ray crystallography. DFT calculations support the structural and spectroscopic data and determine the compositions of frontier molecular orbitals in the investigated complexes. The effects of substituting Cp* with Cp′ and Fe with Ru on the electronic structures and the structural and spectroscopic properties are analyzed.

Cyano-bridged mixed-valence compounds have been known for a long time, i.e., Prussian Blue polymeric solids. Nevertheless, the interest in discrete complexes having a well-defined molecular nuclearity has emerged more recently. There are numerous examples of cyano-bridged mixed-valence complexes in the recent literature, as they show promising and useful applications in electrochromism, molecular magnetism and molecular electronics. In this paper, the reactivity, synthetic and structural chemistry, as well as some physical and chemical properties, of a series of discrete dinuclear mixed-valence cyano-bridged complexes of general formulae [LnCoIII(mu NC)Fe-II(CN)(5)](-) (L = pentadentate macrocyclic ligand) are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the synthetic strategy, redox properties and metal-to-metal-charge-transfer (MMCT) band energy. Tuning the MMCT transition energy has been possible by changing the redox potential of the metal centers, both through structural and outer-sphere changes. The redox processes that involve the appearance and disappearance of these MMCT bands in the visible region have been dealt with in relation to the possible uses of the complexes.
