In this work, some of our recent results in microstructure, texture and orientation relationship resulting from the application of an external high magnetic field during diffusional and non-diffusional phase transformation in both steel and functional metallic materials have been summarized. A 12-T magnetic field was applied to the diffusional decomposition of austenite in 0.81C-Fe alloy and martensitic transformation of a Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloy. For the 0.81C-Fe alloy, it was found that the magnetic field induces the formation of proeutectoid ferrite and slightly enhances the <001> fiber component in ferrite in the transverse field direction. The magnetic dipolar interaction between Fe atoms in the transverse field direction accounts for this phenomenon. The magnetic field favors the formation of pearlite with Pitsch-Petch 2 (P-P 2) and Isaichev (IS) orientation relationships (OR) between the lamellar ferrite and cementite. For the Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloy, the magnetic field makes the martensite lamellas to grow in some specific directions with their c-axes [001] orientated to the field direction and transverse field direction.

Cubic GaN/GaAs(0 0 1) epilayers and hexagonal inclusions are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Photoluminescence (PL), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The X-ray {0 0 0 2} and (1 0 (1) over bar 0) pole figures show that the orientation relationships between cubic GaN and hexagonal inclusions are (1 1 1)//(0 0 0 1), <1 1 2 >//<1 0 (1) over bar 0 >. The distribution of hexagonal inclusions mainly results from the interfacial bonding disorder in the grain boundaries parallel to hexagonal <0 0 0 1 > directions and the lattice mismatch in <0 0 0 1 > directions on {1 0 (1) over bar 0} planes. In order to reduce the energy increase in cubic epilayers, hexagonal lamellas with smaller sizes in <0 0 0 1 > directions often nucleate inside the buffer layer or near the interface between the buffer layer and the epitaxial layer, and penetrate through the whole epitaxial layer with this orientation relationship. Previous studies have suggested an association between depressed mood and the dietary intake of fish. In all cases, however, dietary fish intake has been considered at the exclusion of all other aspects of the diet. This analysis investigates associations between depressed mood and dietary fish intake, while also concurrently investigating intake of a number of other dietary components. The analysis is conducted on data from 10,602 men from Northern Ireland and France screened for inclusion into the PRIME cohort study. Depressed mood was assessed using a self-report questionnaire based on the Welsh Pure Depression sub-scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, diet was assessed using a Food Frequency Questionnaire, and limited demographics were also measured. Using regression, depressed mood is initially inversely associated with dietary fish intake. On inclusion of all other dietary variables, the strength of this relationship reduces but remains, and significant associations with a number of other foods are also found. On additional inclusion of all demographic variables, the strength of the above relationships again reduces, and associations with various measures of socio-economic status and education are also significant. These findings suggest that depressed mood is associated with fish intake both directly, and indirectly as part of a diet that is associated with depression and as part of a lifestyle that is associated with depression. Additional support for these conclusions is also provided in the pattern of associations between depressed mood and diet in the two countries. The relative contributions of fish intake to depressed mood both directly and indirectly are yet to be determined. However, while diet is not measured and until lifestyle can be adequately measured, the potential roles of diet and lifestyle in the association between depressed mood and dietary fish intake should not be ignored.

Several theories have been advanced on the beneficial effect of foreign direct investment (FDI) on economic growth. However, mixed empirical findings have resulted in a long-standing debate. This study explores the global FDI-growth relationship through an 'informed' econometric analysis predicated on substantial guidance obtained from a detailed investigation of 880 estimates reported in 108 published studies. With model uncertainties alleviated and the core specification benchmarked against the aforementioned assessment, our econometric analysis, utilising a global sample of 140 countries in the period 1970 to 2009, conclusively documents that FDI positively affects economic growth. Moreover, we find that this association holds globally as strongly as in the developing world. Further, it is regional variation rather than within-country variation, and contemporaneous FDI rather than past FDI, which matters for growth. Finally, appropriate absorptive capacity indicators for positive growth are identified to be trade openness and financial development rather than schooling.

We report on an adolescent female with Velocardiofacial syndrome (del(22)(q11.2)) and an epilepsy phenotype resembling juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). Clinically, the patient has characteristic signs of both disorders. JME has been linked to several chromosomes, but has not been related to 22q11.2 and is rarely observed in other genetic syndromes. We discuss possible explanations for a relationship between the chromosomal aberration and epilepsy as well as the importance of precise delineation of both epilepsy phenotypes and genetic defects in chromosomal disorders.

Kikuchi diffraction was used to accurately determine the orientation relationship (OR) between Mg17Al12 precipitates and matrix in an AZ91D alloy. For both continuous and discontinuous precipitations, the Burgers OR and the Potter OR were equally observed. The lattice parameter of Mg17Al12 associated with the former is bigger than that of the latter. (C) 2002 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The orientation relationship (OR) between the beta(Zn) phase and the alpha(Al) phase and the corresponding habit planes in a Zn-Al eutectoid alloy were accurately determined using convergent beam Kikuchi line diffraction patterns. In addition to the previously reported OR. [11 (2) over bar0](beta)parallel to[110](alpha), (0002)(beta)parallel to ((1) over bar 11)alpha, two new ORs were observed. They are: [11 (2) over bar0](beta)parallel to [110], ((1) over bar 101)(beta) 0.82 degrees from (002)(alpha) and [(1) over bar 100](beta)parallel to[112](alpha), (0002)(beta) 4.5 degrees from (111)(alpha). These ORs can be explained and understood using the recently developed edge-to-edge matching model. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Purpose - This study investigates the relationship marketing (RM) strategy of a retail bank and examines whether - after its implementation - customer relationships were strengthened through perceived improvements in the banking relationship and consequent loyalty towards the bank. Design/methodology/approach - A survey was conducted on two profitability segments, of which the more profitable segment had been directly exposed to a customer oriented RM strategy, whereas the less profitable segment had been subjected to more sales oriented marketing communications. Findings - No significant differences were found between the segments on customers’ evaluations of the service relationship or their loyalty toward the bank. Furthermore regression analysis revealed that relationship satisfaction was less important as a determinant of loyalty in the more profitable segment. Research limitations/implications - This study was conducted as a case study of one specific branch of a bank group in Finland, which limits the external validity of its results. It was not possible to ascertain if, or to what extent, customers of the more profitable segment had received the intended RM treatment. Other limitations are also discussed. Practical implications - Customer orientation is desirable within retail banking and more studies are needed on the differential drivers of loyalty across customer profitability segments. By identifying the aspects of a banking relationship that are more highly valued among more profitable customers than among less profitable customers, bank managers would be able to more effectively devise appropriate strategies for different segments. Originality/value - The study contributes to the RM literature and marketing of financial services by providing empirical evidence of the effects of RM activities on customer relationship perceptions in different profitability segments.

The early stages of growth of high quality YBa2Cu 3O7-δ (YBCO) films grown on (001) Y-ZrO2 (YSZ) substrates by pulsed laser deposition have been studied using a combination of atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A one unit cell thick YBCO layer and relatively large CuO particles formed in the initial stages. Additional YBCO grew on top of the first layer in the form of one or a few unit cell high c-axis oriented islands about 30 nm in diameter. The rounded islands subsequently coalesced into faceted domains. Elongated Y 2BaCuO5 particles nucleated after the first layer of YBCO. A highly textured BaZrO3 layer formed between the YSZ and the YBCO with a cube-on-cube dominant orientation relationship with respect to the YBCO film.

The microstructure of an artificial grain boundary in an YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) thin film grown on a (100)(110), [001]-tilt yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) bicrystal substrate has been studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The orientation relationship between the YBCO film and the YSZ substrate was [001]YBCO∥[001]YSZ and [110]YBCO∥[100]YSZ for each half of the bicrystal film. However, the exact boundary geometry of the bicrystal substrate was not transferred to the film. The substrate boundary was straight while the film boundary was wavy. In several cases there was bending of the lattice confined within a distance of a few basal-plane lattice spacings from the boundary plane and microfaceting. No intergranular secondary phase was observed but about 25% of the boundary was covered by c-axis-tilted YBCO grains and a-axis-oriented grains, both of which were typically adjacent to CuO grains or surrounded by a thin Cu-rich amorphous layer.
