Fourteen compounds were evaluated for their activity against Trypanosoma cruzi blood stream forms at the concentration of 500 µg/ml. Six compounds were active and re-tested at lower concentrations.

Nitrocompounds are bioactive molecules used as antibacterial, antiparasitic and antitumoral agents. In the past of years, these molecules have been broadly studied in several fields, such as medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemical, toxicology and electrochemistry. The nitrocompounds mode of action involves the biotransformation of the nitro group, releasing intermediates in the redox process. Some of those intermediates attack enzymes, membranes and DNA, providing the basis for their biological activity and adverse effects. In this report, some aspects regarding the biological activity, mechanism of action and toxicity of nitrocompounds are explored, purposing the research of new bioactive derivatives having low toxicity.

In this study, in vitro anti-T. cruzi activity assays of nifuroxazide (NX) analogues, such as 5-nitro-2-furfuryliden and 5-nitro-2-theniliden derivatives, were performed. A molecular modeling approach was also carried out to relate the lipophilicity potential ( LP) property and biological activity data. The majority of the NX derivatives showed increased anti-T. cruzi activity in comparison to the reference drug, benznidazole (BZN). Additionally, the 5-nitro-2-furfuryliden derivatives presented better pharmacological profile than the 5-nitro-2-theniliden analogues. The LP maps and corresponding ClogP values indicate that there is an optimum lipophilicity value, which must be observed in the design of new potential anti-T. cruzi agents. (c) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The state of the art of voltammetric and amperometric methods used in the study and determination of pesticides in crops, food, phytopharmaceutical products, and environmental samples is reviewed. The main structural groups of pesticides, i.e., triazines, organophosphates, organochlorides, nitrocompounds, carbamates, thiocarbamates, sulfonylureas, and bipyridinium compounds are considered with some degradation products. The advantages, drawbacks, and trends in the development of voltammetric and amperometric methods for study and determination of pesticides in these samples are discussed.
